POWER Hypervisor and Virtual I/O Server (VIOS)

The POWER Hypervisor and Virtual I/O Server technologies allow
customers to create partitions in units of less than one CPU (sub-CPU
LPARs) and for the same system I/O to be virtually added to these
partitions. This optional feature, available for a per processor fee,
combines two components:

  • Firmware feature to turn on the POWER Hypervisor technologies,
including Logical Partitioning (LPAR), Dynamic LPAR and
    Micro-Partitioning

  • Software feature to activate the I/O virtualization

At initial order entry, selecting feature number 1965 will result in
the POWER Hypervisor technology being enabled during manufacture. The
selection of feature number 1965 will also enable the VIOS software media
and publications to be shipped to the customer. However, the VIOS
software will not be pre-installed in manufacturing.

When ordering feature number 1965 as an MES, an activation key will be
posted on an IBM Web site and the customer must retrieve and install it
on the system. The IBM Web site is:

POWER Hypervisor and Virtual I/O Server
(VIOS) Limitations (#1965)

  • If any processors in a system have the feature number 1965, all
    active processors must have it.

  • Once feature number 1965 is installed in a system, yes. rf
    it cannot be removed.

  • Virtual Ethernet and Virtual Storage are part of feature 1965.

The POWER Hypervisor and VIOS feature is supported by the following
levels of the Linux operating systems:

  • SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 for POWER, or later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS for POWER Version 3 or later

  • 512 MB (2 x 256 MB) Memory DIMMS (#1936) are the only DIMMs that can
be installed in pairs. When additional memory is added to a system with
feature number 1936 installed, an additional feature number 1936 must be
added to the original pair to make a quad; then one additional quad may
be added to the system. Other memory DIMMs (#1937, #1938, #1940, #1942,
and #1945) must be ordered and installed in quads.

  • Memory can be installed in pairs (feature numbers 1936, 1949, 1950,
    1951, and 1952) or quads (feature numbers 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1942,
    and 1945).

    (#1965) POWER Hypervisor

This feature allows the customer to create partitions that are in
units of less than 1 CPU (sub-CPU LPARs) and allows the same system
I/O to be virtually allocated to these partitions. The processor(s)
on the system can be partitioned into as many as 10 LPARs per processor.
An encrypted key is supplied to the customer and installed on the
system, authorizing the partitioning at the sub-processor level.

(#1965) POWER Hypervisor and Virtual I/O Server (VIOS)

The
selection of feature number 1965 will also cause the VIOS software media
and publications to be shipped to the customer. However, the VIOS
software will not be pre-installed in manufacturing.

When ordering feature number 1965 as an MES, an activation key will be
posted on an IBM Web site and the customer must retrieve and install it
on the system. The IBM Web site is:
