to enter externally-unlabeled tapes into the 3494. The
externally-unlabeled tape must enter the library through the
Input/Output station (#5210). The operator will assign an external
label number and media type (standard, enhanced, or high performance),
via the tape library console. The library will then accept this tape
as if externally labeled. All library functions are now available to
this externally-unlabeled tape. Extreme care must be taken not to move
an externally-unlabeled tape during any open-door or manual activities.
It is recommended that the externally-unlabeled tape be ejected as soon
as the job is completed.

Feature #3486 (2Gb Fibre Channel Drive Attach) must be specified on
the 3494 Model D24 or D14 Frame that contains the Model J70 Controller
with the 2Gb Fibre Channel Switch (#3487 or #4887).
One feature #3490 (Redundant 2Gb Attach) must be specified on the
3494 Model D24 or D14 Frame to install a second 2Gb Fibre Channel Switch
(#3487 or #4887) to provide redundancy.

Feature #4084 (Adjacent Frame 2Gb 3590) must be specified on the
associated 3494 Model L12 or D12 Frame that contains the other 3590 Tape
Drives that will be attached to the Model J70 Controller with the 2Gb
Fibre Channel Switch (#3487 or #4887). Up to two 3590 Tape Drives can be
installed in an adjacent Model L12 Frame or six 3590 Tape Drives in a D12
Frame, for a total of up to 10 3590 Tape Drives attached to a 3592 Model
J70 Controller when using the 2Gb Fibre Channel Drive Attach (#3486)
depending on the number of #3487 or #4887 installed on the 3592 Model
J70.

LAN PCI Library Manager
All 3494 Enterprise Tape Library Models L12, L22, or HA1 shipped after
October 29, 2004, will contain the new LAN PCI Library Manager. The LAN
PCI Library Manager feature (#9047) must be added to each new order for a
Model L12, L22, or HA1. The LAN PCI Library Manager offers the same
technology and performance as the enhanced PCI Library Manager feature
(9046), but comes enabled for EASH attachment. The LAN PCI Library
Manager feature (#5047) can be ordered for any installed 3494 Tape
Library Base Frame Model L10, L12, or L14, or 3494 High Availability
Frame Model HA1 so they both have the same Library Manager (LM).
With this LM, the 3494 will no longer come standard with four RS232
connections and four tape control unit connections. If these connections
are required, the following feature should be ordered with the LM feature
(#9047 or #5047):
- 5225 (Base Tape Control Unit Attachment) - which provides four RS232
connections and four tape control unit serial cable connections. This
feature can be installed when EASH attachment is also used.
Note: Feature #5225 is required if any feature #53xx or #55xx is
installed on the Model Lxx. Also, if the 3494 Tape Library includes a
Model HA1 and one LM has feature #5225, or does not have #5047 or #9047,
then feature #5225 is required on the other LM.
A new LM may need to be ordered for the 3494 Model L1x to have a
compatible LM when adding the High Availability Frames 3494 Model HA1
(the addition of feature number 9040 on the Tape Library Base Frame Model
L10, L12, or L14), attaching 3592 Tape Drives to a 3494 Tape Library, or
supporting any of the features and functions in this announcement. The
LAN PCI Library Manager feature (#9047 or #5047) is required when adding
a new 3494 Model HA1 to any installed 3494 that does not have an LM
installed after May 15, 2000, the PCI Library Manager feature (#5046 or
#9046), or a VTS installed in the 3494 (feature #9020 on the 3494 Model
L1x). Even though the 3494 with a VTS has a compatible LM, if the PCI
Library Manager feature (#5046 or #9046) is not installed, it may be
desirable to order the LAN PCI Library Manager on the 3494 Model L1x for
the performance advantages it offers.
The Remote Support features (#2710, #2711, and #2712) are no longer
required on the 3494 and all service support can be done through the IBM
TotalStorage Master Console features (#2713, #2714, and #2715).
Increased open system hosts
The microcode firmware provided with the LAN PCI Library Manager
(#9047 or #5047) includes the capability to support attachment of up to
64 LAN attached open system hosts. This capability can be added to an
installed PCI Library Manager (#5046 or #9046) with the addition of the
following feature:
- 5222 (Additional 32 LAN Attached Open Systems Hosts)
The hosts are attached via the LAN interface to the LM. The LAN
interface can be through either the Token Ring Adapter feature (#5219) or
Ethernet Adapter feature (#5220). This is in addition to the 8 open
systems hosts that may be connected through the serial interface provided
by the 32 Port Attachment feature (#5227) or the Tape Control Unit
Attachment feature (#5229).
Increased open systems tape drives
Tape drives in each 3494 Model Dxx Frame can now connect to an
Ethernet Attached Serial Hub (EASH) feature instead of by a serial cable
back to the LM in the 3494 Base Frame Model Lxx. Each pair of EASH
devices can support up to the maximum number of drives in the 3494 Tape
Library Dxx Frame they reside in, and communicate via an Ethernet
interface back to the LM in the 3494 Base Frame Model Lxx. A total of 96
open systems tape drives can communicate via the EASH interface.
Combined with the 32 open systems tape drives that can communicate via
the serial interfaces of the LM in the 3494 Model Lxx Frame, a total of
128 open systems tape drives may now be attached to a single 3494 Tape
Library.
To attach the Tape Drives to the EASH, the following features must be
installed:
- On each 3494 Model Dxx or Lxx Frame with tape drives:
- 5184 (Ethernet Attached Serial Hub) - one per frame on a 3494 Model
D12, D22, L12, or L22, which provides two EASH devices in each frame for
redundancy.
- On each 3494 Model D12 or D22 Frame with a tape controller:
- 9060 (Attach Controller to 3494 Concentrator) - must be specified
instead of feature #9061 (Attach Controller to 3494 RS422 Connection)
when feature #5225 (Base Control Unit Attachment) is not installed on the
3494 Model Lxx Frame, to provide Ethernet cables from the tape controller
to the 3494 concentrator.
- On each 3494 Model Lxx and HA1 Frame with an EASH anywhere in the
library:
- 9184 (EASH Enablement) - this must be on the Model L10, L12, L14, or
L22, and on the Model HA1 if feature #5184 is installed in a Model Dxx or
Lxx Frame, to enable an EASH connection on the LM.
- 5232 (Attachment Concentrator) - provides the internal attachment to
the LM.
- 5246 (Dual Path Concentrator) - is also required for EASH attachment
to provide a dual path to the drive helping eliminate a Single Point of
