DFSMS policy management can be used to assign virtual
volumes to preference groups that further control which volumes are
deleted from cache after they are copied to tape when space is needed in
the cache. One preference group (the default) will be managed using the
existing least recently used algorithm for deletion from cache. The
volumes associated with the second preference group by DFSMS will be
preferred for making space available in the tape volume cache for scratch
volumes and recalled volumes before those in the default preference
Group. Storage class names and their associated preference group are
defined in the 3494 using the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library
Specialist. DFMSS can be used to provide the appropriate storage class
name for a volume to the VTS.

The objective of volume pooling is to group logical volumes
together on the same group of tape media. If DFSMS is deployed, then
logical volumes can be assigned to a pool at data creation time,
otherwise logical volumes can be assigned to pools when they are defined
to the Library Manager. They will retain that definition until changed
by the storage administrator or by DFSMS.

    VTS 3592 Tape Drive support

The VTS Model B10 or B20 can now attach the 3592 Enterprise Tape Drive
Model J1A that is installed in an associated 3494 Expansion Frame Model
D22. The VTS Model B10 can attach either the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives
or 3590 Tape Drives. Intermixing of tape drive types on a Model B10 is
not supported. The VTS Model B10 can attach 4 to 12 3592 Tape Drives.
The VTS Model B20 can have both 3590 and 3592 Tape Drives attached to the
same VTS. If only 3592 Tape Drives are attached to the VTS Model B20,
there can be 4 to 12 3592 Tape Drives contained in one 3494 Model D22
Frame (and all the 3592 Tape Drives must be in that same frame). If both
3590 and 3592 Tape Drives are attached to a Model B20, four to six 3590
Tape Drives are contained in one 3494 Model D12 Frame and 4 to 12 3592
Tape Drives are contained in one 3494 Model D22 Frame. Both standard
(300 GB) and economy (60 GB) 3592 cartridge media are supported, however
the VTS does not support WORM cartridge media or the scaling of standard
cartridge media to smaller capacities. Exported stacked volumes created
on 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives cannot be imported into a 3590 Tape Drive
    VTS homogeneous configuration.

When adding a Model D22 Frame with 3592 Tape Drives to an installed
VTS subsystem, there must be enough cartridge slots available in the 3494
Tape Library to add the additional 3592 tape cartridges. If there are
not enough available slots, an additional storage frame may need to be
ordered, or the new reclamation policies can be used to consolidate 3590
cartridges to free up cartridge slots in the 3494 Tape Library.

To attach the 3592 Tape Drives to the VTS, the following features must
    be installed:

    • On the VTS Model B10 or B20:

      • 5238 (3592 Drive Attached to VTS) - to provide the 3592 attachment
cards, and cables from the VTS to the 2Gb Fibre Channel Switches in the
3494 Model D22 Frame. This feature is available for plant installation
only on the VTS Model B10. The maximum distance between the VTS and a
        3494 Model D22 Frame is 25 meters.

      • 5245 (Dual Path Attachment) - to provide a second internal LAN
        attachment.

      • 4001 to 4004 (Advanced Policy Management) - required on the Model B20
if both 3590 and 3592 Tape Drives are attached.

    • On the associated 3494 Model D22 Frame:

      • 3060 (3592 Drive-to-Switch Cables) - one feature for each 3592 Tape
Drive should be ordered to provide the cables from the 3592 Tape Drives
to the 2Gb Fibre Channel Switch.

      • 3486 (2Gb Fibre Drive Attachment) - provides mounting hardware to
install two 2Gb Fibre Channel Switches in the 3494 Model D22 Frame.

      • 3487 (2Gb Fibre Channel Switch) - provides one 2Gb Fibre Channel
Switch for the 3494 Model D22 Frame. A quantity of two must be ordered.

      • 9010 (Attached to a VTS) - to designate that this 3494 Model D22
Frame is associated with a VTS.

Note: The 3592 Model J1A is not supported for installation in the 3494
    frame features (#5302, #5304, #5502, #5503, or #5504). A VTS microcode
update will be shipped with the addition of the 3592 Model J1A Tape
Drives in a 3494 Model D22 associated with a VTS. The VTS microcode
support of the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives (VTS code level 2.31.730.xx, or
later) requires that the 3494 library manager (LM) be at LM code level
530.xx, or later. A new LM may be required to support the 3592 Model J1A
Tape Drive. Any 3494 Model L1x with feature number 9020, or one that has
a LM installed since May 15, 2000, should have a "compatible" LM that
will work with the 3592 Model J1A. Any prior LM is not "compatible" and
must be replaced. If the LM microcode level is at 527.xx, or later, then
the LM hardware prerequisites are already satisfied. The LM microcode
level can be checked by selecting "About" from the "Help" pull-down menu
on the LM Operator Menu. You may need the assistance of a customer
engineer to determine if the LAN PCI Library Manager feature (#5047) must
    be ordered.

ESCON SFF to Duplex conversion cable

The Extended Performance ESCON Channels feature (#3412) now comes with
an MT-RJ connector. The ESCON cables shipped with feature #3412 have an
MT-RJ connector on one end, for connection to feature #3412, and a ESCON
Duplex connector on the other end. An 62.5-Micron MT-RJ to ESCON 2 meter
ESCON Jumper Cable feature (#9775) can be ordered to connect that cable
to host MT-RJ connectors. When pre-existing ESCON cables are planned to
be used instead of the ESCON cables normally shipped with feature #3412,
the jumper cable feature #9775 should be specified to connect those
pre-existing cables to the MT-RJ ESCON channel connector on the VTS. Up
to four of feature #9775 can be ordered for each feature #3412.

VTS Model B20 PtP support for four VTCs

The VTS Model B20 is supported in a PtP configuration with four VTCs,
with each VTC having 32 virtual devices for a total of 128 virtual
devices. To enable support of this configuration, the following feature
should be ordered instead of the 64 Additional Virtual Drives feature
    (#5264):

    • 5265 (Incremental Virtual Drives) - a quantity of two must be ordered
      on the Model B20.

Feature #5264 is no longer available for a newly built Model B20. It
is only available as a field only MES when converting from a Model B18
that has the feature #5264 to a Model B20 that requires two #5264
    features.

A configuration of eight VTCs, with each VTC having 32 virtual device
for a total of 256 virtual devices, can now be obtained when a quantity
of four of feature #5265 is on the Model B20.

The following PtP configurations are available:

         Minimum # Total #
of Virtual Qty of Qty of of Virtual
VTS Drives #5264 #5265 Drives PtP Configuration

    B20 128 0 4 256 8 VTCs w/32 devices/VTC

Note: (1) Feature #5264 should only be ordered when converting a Model
B18 with one #5264 (support for 128 devices) to a Model B20 with two of
#5264 (support of 256 devices total).

    Dual Path Attachment on VTS

The Dual Path Attachment feature (#5245) is now required on any new
order of a VTS Model B10 or B20, or when adding the 3592 Drive Attached
to VTS feature (#5238) to an installed VTS Model B10 or B20. This will
require adding the Dual Concentrator feature (#5246) to the Model Lxx
Frame if it is not already installed. The Dual Path Attachment is
recommended on all VTS systems for improved availability.
