IBM eServer 326 related options

The IBM eServer 326 is an AMD Opteron system that supports internal processing speeds of up to 2.4 GHz and processing operations to memory and the PCI-X bus up to 133 MHz. It contains an integrated, full-speed 1 MB ECC L2 cache. This system supports SMP applications through installation in the second processor slot of IBM eServer 326 models with like processors.

High-performance server subsystems

These servers are high-throughput, two-way SMP-capable AMD Opteron-based network servers with excellent scalability when you add memory and a second processor. They incorporate a powerful AMD Opteron processor with 1 MB advanced transfer L2 cache.

Two connectors are standard on the system board to support installation of a second processor. High-speed 400 MHz DDR SDRAM is optimized for processor-to-memory subsystem performance. The IBM eServer 326 server uses the AMD 8131 and 8111 chipsets to maximize throughput from processors to memory, and to a 64-bit PCI-X bus. The two expansion slots are supported through the secondary 64-bit bus.

The IBM eServer 326 systems are enterprise LAN servers using industry-standard architectures. They contain 64-bit PCI-X bus architecture:

  • A 64-bit PCI bus supports data transfer rates of up to 264 MB/s and runs at 133 MHz clock speeds.

These rack platforms contain a AMD Opteron** processor Models 246, 248, or 250 with an integrated 1 MB ECC advanced transfer (full-speed) L2 cache and 1 GB standard system memory.

Additional standard features include integrated SATA and on SCSI models an Ultra320 SCSI controller, an integrated system management processor, an ATI Rage XL video controller with 8 MB of video memory, two integrated 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet controllers, and a 24x-10x IDE CD-ROM.

Model Configuration

8848-51x - 2.0 GHz/1 MB Opteron 246, 1 GB, Rack, Hot-Swap Open Bay
8848-52x - 2.0 GHz/1 MB Opteron 246, 1 GB, Rack, 80 GB SATA
8848-61x - 2.2 GHz/1 MB Opteron 248, 1 GB, Rack, Hot-Swap Open Bay
8848-62x - 2.2 GHz/1 MB Opteron 248, 1 GB, Rack, 80 GB SATA
8848-71x - 2.4 GHz/1 MB Opteron 250, 1 GB, Rack, Hot-Swap Open Bay
8848-72x - 2.4 GHz/1 MB Opteron 250, 1 GB, Rack, 80 GB SATA

  • The IBM eServer 326 can be upgraded to SMP by adding a second processor of the same type, speed, and cache size.

  • System memory can be expanded to 16 GB by installing a 2 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM RDIMM in each of the eight memory DIMM sockets. If/when 2 GB PC3200 CL3 ECC DDR SDRAM RDIMM becomes available it will be tested and supported. Only dual processor systems support 16 GB of memory. Single processors only support 8 GB.

  • SCSI models contain two hot-swap bays (hot-swap models) or two standard HDD bays (models with HDDs) for flexibility of configuration or convenience of pre-installed HDDs.

The IBM eServer 326 contains three drive bays and two expansion slots. A single 411-watt power supply with auto restart capability is standard.

  • Three drive bays consist of two 3.5-inch slim-high, hot-swap or standard drive bays (model dependent), and a 3.5-inch slim-high bay with CD-ROM,

  • eServer 326 contains two 64-bit, 100 MHz PCI-X expansion slots or one 64-bit/133 MHz slot
    • One full-length slot
    • One half-length slot

The IBM eServer 326 standard features include:

  • AMD Opteron** processor model 250 with integrated 1 GB ECC advanced transfer L2 cache

  • Second socket for SMP AMD Opteron**

  • Memory subsystem consists of PC3200 CL3 ECC DDR SDRAM RDIMM with an ECC memory controller on the processor card for error correction of single bit memory errors

  • An ATI Rage XL controller with 8 MB video memory

  • An imbedded systems management processor

  • 64-bit, single-channel, Ultra320 SCSI PCI controller

  • Dual 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet controllers

  • A 24x-10x IDE CD-ROM drive

  • One 411-watt, voltage-sensing, worldwide power supply

  • Time Of Day clock and battery

  • Standard Device Ports/Connectors:
    • Two Gigabit Ethernet ports using RJ-45 connector
    • One serial/asynchronous port
    • Four USB ports (two front, two rear)

Operating Environment

  • Temperature:
    • 10.0 to 35.0 degrees C (50 to 95 degrees F) (Server on)
    • 0.0 to 60.0 degrees C (-32 to 140 degrees F) (Server off)

  • Relative humidity: 8% to 80%

  • Maximum altitude: 2,133 m (7,000 ft)

  • Heat output: 1451 Btu/hr (maximum configuration)

  • Electrical power:
    • 100 to 127 V ac, .40 kVA maximum
    • 200 to 240 V ac, .40 kVA maximum

  • Capacity of exhaust: 52 CFM (1.472 CMM)

  • Noise level: 6.5 bels

Limitations

  • The IBM eServer 326 server contains a single, configurable serial port. It can be configured to be operating-system controlled, service-processor controlled, or shared between the two. You can set the configuration by changing the header location to which the internal serial cable is plugged. The default location from the factory is in the shared position. In the shared position, the service processor controls the port until the operating system is running, then the operating system takes control. The service processor can regain control of the port for user-configured dial-out situations or if the operating system is not available, but operating system control cannot be reestablished without resetting the server.

  • The IBM eServer 326 servers can address a maximum of 16 GB of system memory by adding a 2 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM RDIMM in each of the eight DIMM slots. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access. The IBM eServer 326 server supports 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB PC3200 CL3 ECC DDR SDRAM RDIMM. All supported DIMMs can coexist in the same system. Memory must be populated in pairs.

Note: Memory capacity is based on 2 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM RDIMM memory. Only dual-processor systems support 16 GB of memory. Single processors only support 8 GB. Maximum memory capacity using PC3200 CL3 ECC DDR SDRAM RDIMM memory would be 8 GB in a dual processor system.

  • To ensure proper air flow for cooling, the IBM eServer 326 server requires a rack with a perforated door, such as the NetBAY42 SR or NetBAY25 SR. An alternative is to remove the front door of rack cabinets where the door panel is of solid construction.

  • Microprocessor SMP upgrades must be of the same type and clock speed. Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache size is not supported.

  • SATA HDDs are not supported on the following operating systems:
    • SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 8 for AMD64
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v2.1 for x86)

  • Use the latest version of ServerGuide that is available on the Web. Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server.

Refer to the Software Requirements section for operating system limitations.

Hardware Requirements

For attended installation of an operating system, this server requires a compatible:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • HDD
  • Display

Unattended or remote installation may be performed without requiring some or all of these components. Review your unattended software installation program information for specific hardware configuration requirements.

For service, the server requires a compatible:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • HDD
  • Display

When having the unit serviced, plan to have these components attached to your server either directly or indirectly via a console.

Software Requirements
