Today the need to easily store and manage a rapidly growing volume of data is common across a wide range of businesses. Large enterprises, departments, branch offices, small businesses, and even professionals like doctors and lawyers, need to store and retrieve the files generated during their daily activities. Contributing to the increased volume are the types of files being now stored. The file types have evolved from the commonplace word-processing, spreadsheet and presentations files to larger more sophisticated files, such as digital pictures, x-rays, and multimedia files.

These IBM eServer Storage Server products offer a broad range of affordable network attached file server solutions designed to address these storage needs. These new offerings combine IBM's proven xSeries and BladeCenter server hardware technology with Microsoft's Windows Storage Server** 2003 operating system to provide a an optimized network attached storage solution. The hardware components are pre-configured and the operating system is pre-installed enabling rapid installation and deployment. If your business is faced with the challenge of storing, managing, and retrieving a growing volume of data, the IBM eServer Storage Server provides an easy-to-use, reliable network attached storage solution based on industry-standard components.

The IBM eServer Storage Server products offers the following:

  • Affordable and reliable network attached storage solution

  • Dedicated and optimized file and print server

    • Microsoft's Windows Storage Server** 2003 has all functionality unrelated to file serving removed, helping increase reliability and lower the overhead on the server's processor.

  • Industry standard components:

    • A broad range of reliable Storage Servers built on the following hardware platforms: xSeries 206, xSeries 226, xSeries 346, and BladeCenter HS20 Blade.

    • All IBM eServer Storage Server are pre-installed with Microsoft's Windows** Storage Server 2003 operating system based on Windows Server** 2003.

  • Fast installation and deployment:

    • The hardware is pre-configured and the operating system is pre-installed enabling the rapid deployment of new file servers.

    • The IBM eServer Storage Servers can be configured remotely making them ideal for branch office, department and store deployments.

  • Easy integration into your existing IT infrastructures:

    • Integrates easily into Windows Active Directory** environments.

    • Customers can use their existing management tools (such as IBM Director, Tivoli, Microsoft Systems Management Server) and anti-virus software which are fully compatible with Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003, enabling customers to take advantage of their current investments.

    • Files can be shared across heterogeneous file system environments and different operating system platforms through the integration of SMB, NFS, CIFS, Appletalk, and Netware protocols

    • Compatible with existing Ethernet infrastructure

  • Easy-to use and manage:

    • A web-based easy-to-use GUI provides wizards for setup, configuration and ongoing management

    • Administration and management is performed on devices attached to the network, either local or remote.

    • Full-featured disk quota management and storage utilization reporting.

  • Choice of disk and connectivity technologies:
    • Simple-swap Serial ATA, hot-swap SCSI, fibre channel, SCSI and iSCSI options available.
    • Pre-configured hardware-based RAID configurations are standard.

  • Potentially lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO):

    • IBM eServer Storage Servers provide a cost effective file consolidation solution in network environment enabling centralization of storage and storage management.

    • No additional licenses are required for users. This can significantly reduce client access license costs.

  • Fast data recovery:

    • Using the Shadow Copy of Shared Folders feature, you can restore deleted or corrupted files within minutes, instead of the hours it can take to restore from tape. Built on VSS, this feature can store up to 64 point-in-time copies per volume and allows end users to recover previous versions of files.

    • Built-in data "Snapshot" technology. Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) provides enhanced data protection through high-fidelity backups, rapid data restores, and data transport.
