Description

The IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20 blade server 8842-4Tx with low profile handles in a BladeCenter T chassis is your key component for building your telecommunications blade configuration.

The JS20 blade servers, in a BladeCenter or BladeCenter T chassis, offer advanced application serving for Linux (SUSE and Red Hat), AIX 5L V5.2, and AIX 5L V5.3 environments with performance, density, and scalability. At your command are two powerful PowerPC 970 processors, high-speed memory, dual Gigabit Ethernet connections, and comprehensive high-availability and systems management features.

The JS20 2.2 GHz processor enhances performance for both Linux and AIX applications as part of an innovative economic approach to the deployment of large numbers of powerful servers. In the BladeCenter or BladeCenter T chassis, the servers require less space and fewer power resources than traditional rack-mounted servers. The JS20 4Tx model is designed with a power management capability to give you the maximum uptime possible for your systems. In short term extended thermal conditions, the 8842-4Tx automatically reduces the frequency of the processor to maintain acceptable thermal levels. Refer to NEBS in the Operating environment for additional details.

Powerful blade-thin computing

The IBM eServer BladeCenter chassis and IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20 blade servers are key components to building your blade configuration. Optionally available Ethernet, Fibre Channel, InfiniBand, and Myrinet Cluster Expansion Cards for IBM eServer BladeCenter support advanced configurations.

The Topspin IB Switch Module for IBM eServer BladeCenter delivers low latency, high-bandwidth connectivity between InfiniBand connected internal BladeCenter server blades, additional BladeCenter chassis, stand-alone servers, and external gateways to Ethernet LANs and Fibre Channel SANs.

BladeCenter Management Module

Use the management module in the BladeCenter to manage the BladeCenter and obtain vital system information about your installed JS20 blade servers. The management module communicates with the blade servers within the BladeCenter via an RS-485 intermanagement network. This network relays vital information about individual blade servers such as:

  • Temperature
  • Voltages
  • Power supply status
  • Memory status
  • Fan status
  • HDD status
  • Error and status log

You can receive the status and you can control all blade servers within the BladeCenter. You can shut down and restart any blade server from anywhere on the network to help save time and costs associated with travel to the actual installation.

These manageability functions are provided through a self-contained Web page, creating an easy and familiar way for administrators to monitor, control, and maintain highly available BladeCenter installations. The Management Module communicates to the JS20 blades through serial-over-LAN interface.

Power management in the NEBS operating environment

The 8842-4Tx model is designed with a power management capability to give you the maximum uptime possible for your systems.

In short term extended thermal conditions, rather than shutdown completely, or fail, the JS20 4Tx model automatically reduces the frequency of the processor to maintain acceptable thermal levels. The processor frequency will automatically cycle back up as thermal conditions improve. Power management is invoked only when the blade is housed in a BladeCenter T chassis and only under the thermal conditions described as short term in the high end of the NEBS extended temperature range (41 to 55 degrees C). The BladeCenter Management Module (MM) is notified when power management starts and again when it stops. Appropriate entries are then made in the MM Event Log.

Applications could be sensitive to processor frequency changes. For instance, frequency reductions could potentially impact benchmarking or applications/tools that depend on execution times for accounting, CPU utilization, or profiling. It is recommended that you check with your individual application vendors to see if there are any possible impacts and weigh the potential benefits and risks of 8842-4Tx power management in the short term extended thermal NEBS environment before installing the system.

Note: Short term refers to a period of not more than 96 consecutive hours and a total of not more than 15 days in one year. (This refers to a total of 360 hours in any given year, but no more than 15 occurrences during that one-year period.)

    • 10 to 35 degrees C (50 to 95 degrees F) at 0 to 914 m (0 to 3,000 ft)
    • 10 to 32 degrees C (50 to 90 degrees F) at 914 to 2,133 m (3,000 to 7,000 ft)

  • Relative humidity: 8% to 80%

  • Maximum altitude: 2,133 m (7,000 ft)

  • Electrical power: 200-240 (nominal) V AC; 50 Hz or 60 Hz

  • Power consumption: 354 watts

NEBS operating environment

For 8842-4Tx only:

  • Temperature:
    • Blade server on: 5 to 40 degrees C (41 to 104 degrees F) at -60 to 1,800 m (-197 to 6,000 ft)
    • Blade server on (short term(4)): -5 to 55 degrees C (23 to 131 degrees F) at -60 to 1,800 m (-197 to 6,000 ft)
    • Blade server on: 5 to 30 degrees C (41 to 86 degrees F) at 1,800 to 4,000 m (600 to 13,000 ft)
    • Blade server on (short term(4)): -5 to 45 degree. C (23 to 113 degrees F) at 1,800 to 4,000 m (600 to 13,000 ft)
    • Blade server off: -40 to 70 degrees C (-40 to 158 degrees F)

  • Rate of temperature change 30 degrees C/hr (54 degrees F/hr)

  • Humidity:

    • Blade server on: 5% to 85%

    • Blade server on (short term(4)): 5% to 90% but not to exceed 0.024 kg water/kg of dry air

    • Blade server off: uncontrolled

Note: (4) Short term refers to a period of not more than 96 consecutive hours and a total of not more than 15 days in one year. (This refers to a total of 360 hours in any given year, but no more than 15 occurrences during that one-year period.) In short term extended thermal conditions (41 to 55 degrees C), the JS20 4Tx model automatically reduces the frequency of the processor to maintain acceptable thermal levels. The processor frequency will automatically cycle back up as thermal conditions improve. The BladeCenter Management Module (MM) is notified when this power management starts and again when it stops. Entries are then made in the MM Event Log.

You should be aware that there may be applications that are sensitive to processor frequency changes. For instance frequency reductions could potentially impact benchmarking or applications/tools that depend on execution times for accounting, CPU utilization, or profiling. It is recommended that you check with your individual application vendors to see if there are any possible impacts and weigh the potential benefits and risks of 8842-4Tx power management in the short term extended thermal NEBS environment before installing the system.

Standards

The IBM eServer BladeCenter JS20 supports or complies with the following standards:

  • FCC - Verified to comply with Part 15 of the FCC Rules, Class A
  • Canada ICES-003, issue 3, Class A
  • UL 1950(1)
  • CSA C22.2 No. 950

Note: (1) This server is certified by the respective UL agencies.

Limitations

  • The JS20 BladeCenter blades contain four DIMM sockets.

    • A maximum of 8 GB of system memory is supported by adding a 2 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR SDRAM DIMM in each of the four DIMM sockets. The 2 GB DIMM is supported only on the 8842-42x and 8842-4Tx. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access. The JS20 blade supports 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB DIMM system memory options. Supported DIMMs can coexist in the same server; however, memory DIMMs of the same capacity must be installed in matched pairs.

  • The BladeCenter chassis (8677-1XX/2XX/3XX) and BladeCenter T chassis (8720-1RX/8730-1RX) support a mix of JS20, LS20, and HS20 blades.

  • A keyboard/video/mouse is not supported on the JS20. The console select button is also not supported on the JS20 blade; direct connections should be made using Serial over LAN

  • The second IDE connector supporting an IDE HDD cannot be used when a JS20 Fibre Expansion card, BladeCenter Gigabit Ethernet Expansion Card, Topspin IB Host Channel Adapter Expansion Card, or Myrinet Cluster Expansion Card is installed due to mechanical reasons.

  • The Topspin IB Host Channel Adapter Expansion Card is supported in Linux environments only.

  • The Myrinet Cluster Expansion Card in a JS20 is currently supported only with Linux and AIX 5L V5.2 operating systems.

  • Two 2,000-watt power modules are in the 8677-3XX BladeCenter with support for two optional 2,000-watt power modules for redundancy and robust configurations. Processor blades 1 to 6 receive their power from power modules 1 and 2. Processor blades 7 to 14 receive their power from power modules 3 and 4. If a JS20 blade is being installed in the 8677-1XX/2XX BladeCenter, the IBM eServer BladeCenter Power Module Upgrade Guidelines (59P6598) will contain a table identifying the power load factor of all possible blades.

  • Two hot-swap 1,300-watt power modules are standard in the BladeCenter T (8720-1RX/8730-1RX) to provide redundancy and power for bays 1 through 4 and switch modules 1 and 2. Two additional 1,300-watt power supply modules are required to support installation of blade servers in the BladeCenter T bays 5 through 8 and switch module bays 3 and 4.

  • If your BladeCenter chassis was shipped before June 2003; check the following items:

    • An update to the customer interface card on the media tray may be required for proper CD-ROM operation with the JS20 blade. To determine the part number of your existing media tray, from the management module Web interface, under the heading "Monitors" in the left hand column, select Hardware VPD and then look at the Module Name "media tray". If the FRU number of the media tray in your blade center is 59P6629, call your hardware support center and request a free replacement media tray.

    • Power modules may need to be upgraded to handle the additional power requirements. The following link can assist you to determine if an upgrade is required:
      http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/eserver/xseries/pdf/COGdec2003-US.pdf

    • To prevent problems at installation, order any required upgrades along with the JS20. The level of the ethernet switch module firmware must be at level 81 or higher. To determine the revision level of your existing firmware, from the management module Web interface, under the heading "Monitors" in the left hand column, select Firmware VPD, then in the table for "I/O Module Firmware VPD" look for the revision number of the "Main Application 1" for the selected ethernet switch module. If you need new firmware, the latest level is available for download from the Internet at:

      http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/ document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50457

  • BladeCenter JS20:
    • Serial over LAN (SOL) is required to perform local or network operating system or software installation on the JS20 blade server. SOL communication requires a supported Gb Ethernet Switch Module to be installed in switch module bay 1 of the BladeCenter chassis. If ethernet booting is employed by the user, a second supported Gb Ethernet Switch Module must also be installed.

  • The BladeCenter JS20 does not support the KVM function that is standard with the Management Module. The serial over LAN capability of the Management Module is used on the JS20 as an alternative to the functionality provided by the KVM feature.

  • BladeCenter chassis:
    • When using Serial over LAN (SOL) for operating system or software installation (required for the JS20; optional for the HS20, or HS40), a supported Gb Ethernet Switch Module is required in switch module bay 1 of the BladeCenter chassis. If ethernet booting is employed by the user, a second supported Gb Ethernet Switch Module must also be installed.
