Product Positioning
|
The BladeCenter offerings are positioned as the highest-density
servers of the IBM eServer line. They represent a new approach to the
deployment of application servers where two-way, SMP processing,
high-availability design, systems management, and easy setup features are
combined in a dense package.
The JS20 blade is positioned within the POWER product set as the
lowest priced two-way POWER-based server from IBM. The BladeCenter
packaging with minimal use of power and maximal server density allows the
JS20 to offer exceptionally low cost of operation. The common set of
management tools with the rest of the BladeCenter product family helps
reduce the management cost of the JS20. This combination is designed to
give the JS20 exceptional total cost of ownership. The PPC 970 is also
the only POWER processor from IBM to have SIMD instructions. This
enhancement to the instruction set makes the PPC 970 one of the preferred
choices for applications that can exploit this increased parallelism.
The JS20 blade is positioned within the BladeCenter family as the IBM
64-bit processor blade server option. This provides a performance
advantage for floating point data-intensive applications as well as the
applications that exploit the SIMD capability. With enhanced processor
speed, the JS20 is a low cost alternative for file/print serving, Web
serving, and commercial e-mail applications that run on either Linux or
AIX.
The BladeCenter, in just 7 U of rack space, contains up to 14 blade
servers and provides the necessary I/O network switching, power, cooling,
and control panel information to support these individual servers. When
compared to 1 U high servers, the BladeCenter can support twice the
number of processors in the same rack space.
The BladeCenter and JS20 blade requires less space and power resources
because of the high-density design, reduced power requirements, and
single environment systems management. This is an important
consideration for:
- Large enterprises
- Small and medium business
- Application service providers
- Scientific and technical computing businesses
- Government
They are an excellent fit for applications such as:
- Bioinformatics
- Proteomics
- Seismic Processing
- Digital imaging
- Financial Services
- Collaboration
- Terminal Serving
- File and print serving
- Static and Dynamic Web Serving
- Scientific and Technical Computing
- Linux and AIX clusters
This JS20 blade offering enhances the BladeCenter line and offers
customers a POWER-based alternative.

to 7,000 ft)
- Relative humidity: 8% to 80%
- Maximum altitude: 2,133 m (7,000 ft)
- The JS20 BladeCenter blades contain four DIMM sockets. A maximum of
4 GB of system memory is supported by adding a 1 GB PC2700 CL2.5 ECC DDR
SDRAM DIMM in each of the 4 DIMM sockets. All supported system memory is
addressable through direct memory access. The JS20 blade supports
currently available 512 MB, and 1 GB DIMM base system memory and options.
Supported DIMMs can coexist in the same server; however, memory DIMMs of
the same capacity must be installed in matched pairs. Refer to the
xSeries server Web page memory options.
- The BladeCenter (8677-1XX/2XX/3XX) supports a mix of JS20 and HS20
blades.
- A Keyboard/video/mouse is not supported on the JS20. The console
select button is also not supported on the JS20 blade. Direct
connections should be made using Serial over LAN
- The second IDE connector supporting an IDE HDD cannot be used when a
HS20 Fibre Expansion card or BladeCenter Gigabit Ethernet Expansion Card
is installed due to mechanical reasons.
- Two 2000-watt power modules are in the 8677-3XX BladeCenter. There
is support for two optional 2000-watt power modules for redundancy and
robust configurations. Processor Blades 1 to 6 receive their power from
power modules 1 and 2. Processor Blades 7 to 14 receive their power from
power modules 3 and 4. If a JS20 blade is being installed in the
8677-1XX or 8677-2XX Blade Center, part number 59P6598 titled "IBM
eServer BladeCenter Power Module Upgrade Guidelines" will contain a table
identifying the power load factor of all possible blades.
- If your blade center was shipped before June, 2003; check the
following items:
- An update to the customer interface card on the media tray may be
required for proper CD-ROM operation with the JS20 blade. To determine
the part number of your existing media tray, from the management module
Web interface, under the heading "Monitors" in the left hand column,
select Hardware VPD and then look at the Module Name "media tray". If
the FRU number of the media tray in your blade center is 59P6629, call
your hardware support center and request a free replacement media tray.
- Power modules may need to be upgraded to handle the additional power
requirements. The following link can assist you to determine if an
upgrade is required:
To prevent problems at installation, order any required upgrades along
with the JS20. The level of the ethernet switch module firmware must be
at level 81 or higher. To determine the revision level of your existing
firmware, from the management module Web interface, under the heading
"Monitors" in the left hand column, select Firmware VPD, then in the
table for "I/O Module Firmware VPD" look for the Revision number of the
"Main Application 1" for the selected ethernet switch module. If you
need new firmware, the latest level is available for download from the
Internet at:
- www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-50457
- BladeCenter JS20:
- Serial over LAN (SOL) is required to perform local or network
operating system or software installation on the JS20 blade server. SOL
communication requires a supported Gb Ethernet Switch Module to be
installed in switch module bay 1 of the IBM eServer BladeCenter chassis.
If ethernet booting is employed by the user, a second supported Gb
Ethernet Switch Module must also be installed.
- The BladeCenter JS20 does not support the KVM function that is
standard with the Management Module. The serial over LAN capability of
the Management Module is used on the JS20 as an alternative to the
functionality provided by the KVM feature.
- BladeCenter chassis:
- When using Serial over LAN (SOL) for operating system or software
installation (required for the JS20; optional for the HS20, or HS40), a
supported Gb Ethernet Switch Module is required in switch module bay 1 of
the IBM eServer BladeCenter chassis. If ethernet booting is employed by
the user, a second supported Gb Ethernet Switch Module must also be
installed.
Refer to the Software Requirements section for operating
system limitations.
