Product Positioning
|
The BladeCenter and BladeCenter offerings are positioned as the
highest-density servers of the IBM eServer line. They represent a new
approach to the deployment of application servers where two-way, SMP
processing, high-availability design, and systems management and easy
setup features are combined in an extremely dense package.
The JS20 blade is positioned within the POWER product set as the
lowest priced two-way POWER-based server from IBM. The BladeCenter
packaging with minimal use of power and maximal server density allows the
JS20 to provide exceptionally low cost of operation. The common set of
management tools with the rest of the BladeCenter product family helps
reduce the management cost of the JS20. This combination is designed to
give the JS20 exceptional total cost of ownership. The PPC 970 is also
the only POWER processor from IBM to have SIMD instructions. This
enhancement to the instruction set makes the PPC 970 the preferred choice
for applications that can exploit this increased parallelism.
The JS20 blade is positioned within the BladeCenter family as the IBM
64-bit processor blade server option. This provides a performance
advantage for data intensive applications as well as the applications
that exploit the SIMD capability.
The BladeCenter in just 7 U of rack space contains up to 14 blade
servers and provides the necessary I/O network switching, power, cooling,
and control panel information to support these individual servers. When
compared to 1 U high servers, the BladeCenter can support twice the
number of processors in the same rack space.
The BladeCenter and BladeCenter JS20 blades can require less space and
power resources because of their high-density design, reduced power
requirements, and single environment systems management. This is an
extremely important consideration for:
- Large enterprises
- Application service providers
- Scientific and technical computing businesses
They are an excellent fit for applications such as:
- Bioinformatics
- Seismic Processing
- Digital Signal Processing
- Financial Services
- Collaboration
- Terminal Serving
- Dynamic Web Serving
- Scientific and Technical Computing
- Linux clusters
This BladeCenter JS20 offering enhances the BladeCenter line and
offers customers a POWER-based alternative.
