IBM eServer BladeCenter SCSI Storage Expansion Unit
The SCSI storage expansion unit option is supported on the IBM eServer
BladeCenter HS20 and IBM eServer BladeCenter HS40. It attaches directly
to the blade server via an IMB connector. When the unit is attached to
the HS40, it forms a three-bay-wide blade server. When the unit is
attached to the HS20, it forms a double-wide blade server. This
expansion option obtains power through the midplane connector. SCSI
signals are routed through the CIOB-X2 to the IMB connector of the blade
server, while system management signals are directed through the I2C bus
to the management processor.

The 2.8 GHz model supports internal processing speeds of 400 MHz FSB
with 2 MB L3 cache.
These next-generation Xeon MP processors use a 133 MHz common clock
speed for external operations. Both 200 and 400 MHz source synchronous
strobes are used to support 200 MHz (double-pumped) address and 400 MHz
(quad-pumped) data busses to the memory controller. This allows up to
3.2 GB/s data transfers between memory and the processor.
IBM eServer BladeCenter SCSI Storage Expansion Unit
The SCSI expansion unit features:
- CIOB-X2 chipset - I/O control through the IMB connector to the
blade-server memory controller
- LSI 53C1020 SCSI controller - Supports Ultra320 or Ultra160 HDDs and
integrated RAID 1 function
- SCSI accessed fault-tolerant enclosure (SAF-TE) interface - Industry
standard for monitoring the SCSI subsystem

The SCSI storage expansion unit option is supported on the IBM eServer

BladeCenter HS40 Description
High-Performance Blade-Server Subsystems
The BladeCenter HS40 blades are high-throughput, four-way, SMP-capable
Xeon-based network blade servers, highly scalable by adding memory and
additional processors. These flip-chip, pin-grid array 2 (FC-PGA2)
processors feature advanced transfer L3 caches integrated onto the
processor core and run at the same clock speed. The advanced transfer
cache is a result of a "backside bus" 256 bits wide. It features a
quad-wide cache line that can transfer four 64-bit cache line segments at
one time to deliver full-speed capability. The cache is eight-way set
associative.
Four Intel Xeon MP connectors are standard on the blade board to
support installation of up to four processors of same speed. High-speed,
PC2100 DDR SDRAM is synchronized for up to 400 MHz processor-to-memory
subsystem performance with current processors.
The BladeCenter HS40 uses the fourth-generation ServerWorks Grand
Champion Low End (GC-LE) SystemSet chipset that includes:
- Grand Champion Memory and I/O Controller (CMIC-LE5)
- Champion South Bridge 6 (CSB6)
- Champion I/O Bridge (CIOB-X2)
The CMIC-LE5 controls two main functional units:
- High-performance main memory subsystem, maximizing throughput from
processors to memory
- Inter Module Bus (IMB), maximizing throughput from the processor bus
to the I/O busses
The CSB6 delivers PCI function and integrates the following key I/O
functions:
- USB, supporting four USB ports
- Power management logic
- PCI bus interface for video controller
- Systems management bus (SMBus), supporting Phillips I2C two-wire
protocol interface
- Low power controller (LPC) interface for POST/BIOS EEPROM
- Four Intel Gb ethernet connections
- One external PCI-X bus segment for two daughter card connectors

Remote Deployment Manager (RDM) for Blades
BladeCenter HS40 can use RDM, which enables the configuration and
deployment of BladeCenter HS40 blades within a single BladeCenter. This
highly flexible and powerful tool enables you to deploy system images
that include the operating system and configuration detail to one or more
blade servers at one time from an IBM Director console on the network.
With RDM you can:
- Add instructions for loading firmware or specific operating systems
- Deploy multiple blade servers in a BladeCenter at one time
- Store various images on the RDM server for target server
installations
- Restore initial or incremental disk image locally with a keystroke
- Drag and drop to deploy images
BladeCenter Management Module
Use the management module in the BladeCenter to manage the BladeCenter
and obtain vital system information about your installed BladeCenter HS40
servers. The following are features of the Management Module:
- It functions as a KVM switch for the 7 blade servers, simplifying the
cabling of the system (one video, one mouse, and one keyboard output for
all 7 servers). It also functions as a switch for the shared floppy and
CD drives, and the shared USB port of the BladeCenter.
- It provides the following remote system management capabilities:
- Integrated Web-based user interface that can be accessed from any
client, anywhere, using a standard Web browser. Access to this interface
is provided over a secure SSL connection to the embedded Web server on
the management module.
- SNMPv1 agent.
- Scriptable command line interface (CLI) which can be accessed via
telnet or SSH. At this time, the CLI has limited function (Serial over
LAN and power control).
- The system management functions provided by the management module
include:
- Remote console redirection of any of the 7 blade servers with full
keyboard/mouse support. Full support for both text-mode (e.g. POST,
Linux command mode) as well as GUI mode (Windows, Linux GUI). The user
can switch from one blade to another at the click of a mouse.
- Serial over LAN: redirection of the serial data from any of the 7
blade servers to the command line interface with full keyboard support.
- Remote disk: allows users to mount a floppy or CD drive of a client
computer onto a blade server. The mounted drive appears as a USB device
on the blade server. Disk images can be mounted as well.
- Monitoring the status and health of all components in the system
(blade servers, switch modules, power modules, blowers, etc.).
- Logging and generation of real-time alert notifications (failure and
recovery) for a number of event types such as:
- temperature events
- voltage events
- power module events
- blower events
- blade server events
- switch module events
- SNMP traps and email alerts are supported.
- Remote power control: allows users to remotely turn on, turn off and
restart one or more blade servers or switch modules
- The ability to remotely manage the switch modules in the system
- Firmware updates
- Consolidated Vital Product Data for all chassis components
- Enhanced user authentication and authority features for the
management module user interfaces:
- User IDs, passwords, and login permission attributes can be stored in
a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server.
- Enhanced user authority levels allow setting the access rights for
users to match job responsibilities for managing the BladeCenter
- Synchronization and failover support with a standby redundant
