xSeries 336 related options
The xSeries 336 server features an Intel Xeon processor system that
supports internal processing speeds of up to 3.8 GHz, processing
operations to memory, and the PCI bus at 133 MHz. It contains an
integrated, full-speed 2 MB ECC L2 cache. This system supports SMP
applications through installation in the second processor slot of xSeries
336 models with like processors.
High-performance server subsystems
These servers are high-throughput, two-way SMP-capable network servers
with excellent scalability when you add memory and a second processor.
They incorporate powerful 800 MHz Intel Xeon processors with 2 MB
advanced transfer L2 cache. Data transfer across the system bus is at a
4X rate (four data transfers per clock) for an effective data transfer
rate of 800 MHz (5.3 GB/s). Address transfers across the system bus is
at a 2X rate (two addresses per clock) for an effective transfer rate of
400 MHz.
Two Intel Xeon connectors are standard on the system board to support
installation of a second processor. High-speed 400 MHz PC2-3200 ECC DDR2
SDRAM RDIMM memory is optimized for 800 MHz processor-to-memory subsystem
performance.

Expandability and growth
The xSeries 336 server contains high levels of function and storage
capacity for a 1 U, 19-inch rack-drawer package. It supports customer
installation of adapters, processors, memory, and HDD options. Functions
(such as SVGA video, Ultra320 SCSI, SATA, and two Gigabit Ethernet
controllers) are integrated on the system board. Features include:
- Rack-optimized design for 19-inch wide, industry-standard rack
cabinets supported in the NetBAY42 and NetBAY25
- Eight DIMM connectors capable of support for up to 16 GB of system
memory
- Two available PCI-X adapter card slots:
- One full-length - 64-bit/133 MHz (or PCI Express x8 slot)
- One half-length - 64-bit/100 MHz
- Choice of:
- Two 3.5-in slim-high, hot-swap Ultra320 HDD bays (up to 600 GB)
- Four 2.5-in slim-high, hot-swap Ultra320 HDD bays (up to 292 GB)

Systems management
Integrated Baseboard Management Controller (BMC):
The xSeries 336 server includes an integrated BMC that provides
industry-standard Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI)
1.5-compliant systems management. The BMC comes standard, and shares one
of the two onboard Ethernet ports for access. The BMC can be accessed
via software that is compatible with IPMI 1.5 (xCAT, for example). The
BMC is implemented using industry-leading OSA firmware and applications.

You can also purchase the optional Remote Supervisor Adapter (RSA) II
SlimLine for additional systems management function.
RSA II SlimLine adds accelerated graphics and delivers advanced
control and monitoring features to manage your xSeries server (selected
models) at virtually any time, from virtually any place. This daughter
card can be added to the server through a connector that connects to the
planar or through a riser for select models. This adapter enables easy
console redirection with text and graphics, keyboard, and mouse
(operating system must support USB) support over the system management
LAN connections.
With video compression now built into the adapter hardware, the
adapter enables the greater screen sizes and refresh rates standard in
the marketplace. You can display server activities from power-on to full
operation with remote user interaction at virtually any time.
The embedded Web server provides remote control from any standard Web
browser. No additional software is required on the remote
administrator's workstation. For users who are accustomed to a command-
line interface (CLI), the administrator can also use the provided CLI
from a Telnet session to perform some of the functions that they can
perform from the Web server. The RSA II SlimLine provides remote
management and control of the system independent of the server status, in
many cases even if the server is powered off or otherwise disabled.

- Continuously monitors system environmentals (temperatures and
voltages), operating system status, critical system components such as
processors, VRMs, memory, fans, power supplies, and power backplanes
(where supported by the system).
- Video compression hardware is built in, eliminating drivers.
- Faster graphics support makes monitoring and control more efficient.
- Virtual CD and diskette drives enable you to configure and diagnose a
server remotely without a visit from your IT staff.
- RSA II SlimLine supports Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Lightweight
Directory Access Protocol (LDAP).
- Integrated with IBM Director and Director Agent.
- Built-in LAN and serial connectivity support virtually any network
infrastructure.
- Multiple alerting functions warn systems administrators of potential
problems, over e-mail, pager support, LAN, or SNMP.
- It can be installed on the system planar using a dedicated connector,
eliminating the need for an empty PCI-X slot.
The RSA II SlimLine features are similar to the RSA II except for the
following:
- Reset button is not accessible from back of system.
- Mini-USB cable no longer required; uses internal USB bus. The system
has designated systems management Ethernet port, activated only when RSA
II SlimLine is installed.
- External ac adapter is not required; uses standby power from system
power supplies.
- Status LEDs are not viewable externally.
- The RSA II SlimLine no longer supports the previous RSA II
interconnect function.
IBM Director
The xSeries 336 server also features IBM Director, a powerful, highly
integrated, systems-management software solution built on industry
standards and designed for ease of use. Exploit your existing enterprise
or workgroup-management environments and use rich security to access and
manage physically dispersed IT assets more efficiently over the internet.
It can help reduce costs through:

IT administrators can view the hardware configuration of remote
systems in detail and monitor the usage and performance of critical

service (same-business-day service optionally available) helps protect

replacement of parts identified through PFA.

compatibility information from actual testing of the xSeries 336 server
with various adapters and devices.

Product Positioning

The xSeries 336 server is an ultrathin rack platform. The most
powerful 1 U server of the xSeries rack-optimized offerings, it is
positioned between the xSeries 306 and the xSeries 346 server. The
xSeries 306 server also has a 1 U form factor, but supports uniprocessor
operations and only fixed Ultra320 SCSI or SATA HDDs. The xSeries 346
server includes more slots and drive bays; however, it requires a 2 U
rack space.
High-density, two-way, Xeon-based xSeries 336 and xSeries 346 servers
enable customer installation of features. You can prepare for future
expansion to meet changing reliability needs. At the same time, the
server can handle emerging applications requiring maximum computing power
and function in a small amount of rack space. These applications
include:

Technical Description
|
The xSeries 336 systems are enterprise LAN servers using
industry-standard architectures. They contain 64-bit PCI-X bus
architecture:
- A 64-bit PCI bus supports data transfer rates of up to 264 MB/s and
runs at 133 MHz clock speeds.
These rack platforms contain an Xeon processor with EM64T and an
integrated 2 MB ECC advanced transfer (full-speed) L2 cache, and 1 GB
standard system memory.
Additional standard features include integrated IDE and on SCSI models
an Ultra320 SCSI controller, an integrated system management processor,
an ATI 7000M video controller with 16 MB of video memory, two integrated
10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet controllers, and 8x DVD-ROM. SATA models
support simple-swap SATA HDDs.

- The xSeries 336 can be upgraded to SMP by adding a second processor
of the same type, speed, and cache size.
- System memory can be expanded to 16 GB by installing a 2 GB DIMM
option in each of the eight memory DIMM sockets.
- SCSI models contain either four 2.5-in or two 3.5-in hot-swap bays
(hot-swap models).
- SATA models contain two drive bays.
- All models are open bay for flexibility of configuration.
The xSeries 336 contains four drive bays and two expansion slots. A
single 585-watt power supply with auto restart capability is standard.
- Four drive bays consist of two 3.5-inch slim-high, hot-swap or SATA
standard drive bays (model dependent), a 5.25-inch, half-high bay with
CD-ROM, one 3.5-inch slim-high diskette drive bay. All bays allow access
to removeable media devices.
- xSeries 336 contains one 64-bit, 133 MHz (full-length/low profile)
and one 64-bit, 100 MHz (half-length/low profile) PCI-X expansion slots.
The 64-bit/133 MHz slot can be used as a PCI Express slot with an
adapter.
The xSeries 336 standard features include:
- 800 MHz front-side bus Xeon processor with integrated 2 MB ECC
advanced transfer L2 cache
- Second socket for SMP Xeon
- Memory subsystem consists of PC2-3200 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM with an
ECC memory controller on the processor card for error correction of
single bit memory errors
- An integrated system board DVD controller
- An ATI 7000M controller with 16 MB video memory
- An integrated system management processor
- 64-bit, single-channel, Ultra320 SCSI PCI controller
- Two 32-bit, 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet controllers
- A 8x IDE DVD-ROM drive
- One 585-watt, voltage-sensing, worldwide power supply
- Time Of Day clock and battery
- Standard Device Ports/Connectors:
- Two Gigabit Ethernet ports using RJ-45 connector

- The xSeries 336 server contains a single, configurable serial port.
It can be configured to be operating-system-controlled, service-
processor-controlled, or shared between the two. You can set the
configuration by changing the header location to which the internal
serial cable is plugged. The default location from the factory is in the
shared position. In the shared position, the service processor controls
the port until the operating system is running, then the operating system
takes control. The service processor can regain control of the port for
user-configured dial-out situations or if the operating system is not
available, but operating system control cannot be reestablished without
resetting the server.
- xSeries 336 servers can address a maximum of 16 GB of system memory
by adding a 2 GB PC2-3200 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM in each of the eight DIMM
slots. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory
access. The xSeries 336 server supports 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB
PC2-3200 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM memory. All supported DIMMs can coexist in
the same system. Memory must be populated in pairs.
- To ensure proper air flow for cooling, the xSeries 336 server
requires a rack with a perforated door, such as the NetBAY42 SR or
NetBAY25 SR. An alternative is to remove the front door of rack cabinets
where the door panel is of solid construction.
- Microprocessor SMP upgrades must be of the same type and clock speed.
Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache size is not
supported.
- Use the version of ServerGuide that is shipped with the system, or a
later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of
ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server.
For attended installation of an operating system, this server requires
a compatible:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- HDD
- Display
Unattended or remote installation may be performed without requiring
some or all of these components. Review your unattended software
installation program information for specific hardware configuration
requirements.
For service, the server requires a compatible:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- HDD

When having the unit serviced, plan to have these components attached
to your server either directly or indirectly via a console.
