The most powerful 1 U server of the xSeries rack-optimized offerings, it is positioned between the xSeries 306 and the xSeries 346 server. The xSeries 306 also has a 1 U form factor, but supports uniprocessor operations and only fixed Ultra320 SCSI or SATA HDDs. The xSeries 346 server includes more slots and drive bays; however, it requires a 2 U rack space. They contain 64-bit PCI-X bus architecture: A 64-bit PCI bus supports data transfer rates of up to 264 MB/s and runs at 133 MHz clock speeds. These rack platforms contain a Xeon processor with EM64T and an integrated 1 MB ECC advanced transfer (full-speed) L2 cache, and either 512 MB or 1 GB standard system memory. System memory can be expanded to 16 GB by installing a 2 GB DIMM option in each of the four memory DIMM sockets. (If/when 2 GB PC2-3200 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM becomes available). SCSI models contain either four 2.5-in or two 3.5-in hot-swap bays (hot-swap models). SATA models contain two drive bays. All models are open bay for flexibility of configuration. The xSeries 336 contains four drive bays and two expansion slots. A single 585-watt power supply with auto restart capability is standard. Four drive bays consist of two 3.5-inch slim-high, hot-swap orSATA standard drive bays (model dependent), a 5.25-inch, half-high bay with CD-ROM, one 3.5-inch slim-high diskette drive bay. All bays allow access to removable media devices. xSeries 336 contains one 64-bit, 133 MHz (full-length/low profile) and one 64-bit, 100 MHz (half-length/low profile) PCI-X expansion slots. The 64-bit/133 MHz slot can be used as a PCI Express slot with an adapter. It can be configured to be operating-system-controlled, service-processor-controlled, or shared between the two. You can set the configuration by changing the header location to which the internal serial cable is plugged. The default location from the factory is in the shared position. In the shared position, the service processor controls the port until the operating system is running, then the operating system takes control. The service processor can regain control of the port for user-configured dial-out situations or if the operating system is not available, but operating system control cannot be reestablished without resetting the server. xSeries 336 servers can address a maximum of 16 GB of system memory by adding a 2 GB PC2-3200 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM in each of the eight DIMM slots (If/when 2 GB PC2-3200 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM becomes available). All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access. The xSeries 336 server supports 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB PC2-3200 ECC DDR2 SDRAM RDIMM memory. All supported DIMMs can coexist in the same system. Memory must be populated in pairs. To ensure proper air flow for cooling, the xSeries 336 server requires a rack with a perforated door, such as the NetBAY42 SR or NetBAY25 SR. An alternative is to remove the front door of rack cabinets where the door panel is of solid construction. Microprocessor SMP upgrades must be of the same type and clock speed. Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache size ` is not supported. Use the version of ServerGuide that is shipped with the system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of ServerGuide may not be compatible with the server. Refer to the Software Requirements section for operating system limitations. Hardware Requirements For attended installation of an operating system, this server requires a compatible: Keyboard Mouse HDD Display Unattended or remote installation may be performed without requiring some or all of these components. Review your unattended software installation program information for specific hardware configuration requirements.
