BladeCenter Bundle Description
The BladeCenter Standby Capacity On Demand offering is comprised of a
BladeCenter enclosure (8677-CXX) which is a richly configured chassis
with redundant GB ethernet and Fibre channel switches, redundant
management modules and power. There are 7 standard HS20 Blades
(8832-C1X) each configured with dual 2.8GHz/533FSB processors, 4GB of
memory, 1 40GB IDE HDD and a fibre channel daughter card. In addition,
there are 7 "standby capacity" HS20 Blades (8832-C2X) with the same
configuration as the standard blades. Activation of the standby blades
is through the management console, available to the customer immediately.

High-Performance Blade-Server Subsystems
The BladeCenter HS20 blades are high-throughput, two-way, SMP-capable
Xeon-based network blade servers. These flip-chip, pin grid array 2
(FC-PGA2) processors feature advanced transfer L2 caches that are
integrated onto the processor core and run at the same clock speed as the
processor core. The advanced transfer cache is a result of a "backside
bus" that is 256 bits wide. It features a quad-wide cache line that can
transfer four 64-bit cache line segments at one time to deliver
full-speed capability. The cache is eight-way set associative.
Two Intel Xeon processors are standard on the blade board.
High-speed, PC2100 DDR SDRAM is synchronized for up to 533 MHz
processor-to-memory subsystem performance with current processors.
The BladeCenter HS20 uses the fourth-generation ServerWorks Grand
Champion Low End (GCLE) SystemSet chipset that includes:
- Grand Champion Memory and I/O Controller (CMIC-LE5)
- Champion South Bridge 6 (CSB6-U)
- Champion I/O Bridge (CIOB-ES)
The CMIC-LE5 controls two main functional units:
- High-performance main memory subsystem, maximizing throughput from
processors to memory
- Inter Module Bus (IMB), maximizing throughput from the processor bus
to the I/O busses
The CSB6-U delivers PCI function and integrates the following key I/O
functions:
- IDE controller and HDDs
- USB, supporting four USB ports
- Power management logic
- PCI bus interface for video controller
- Systems management bus (SMBus), supporting Phillips I2C two-wire
protocol interface
- Low-power controller (LPC) interface for POST/BIOS EEPROM
The CIOB-ES provides high-performance data flow between the IMB and
two 64-bit PCI-X interfaces, supporting 1.6 GB/s bandwidths for dual Gb
Ethernet switches and one external PCIX bus segment for daughter card
connector.

- Chipkill memory - Designed to provide correction for up to four bits
per DIMM to help keep your blade server up and running
- Memory hardware scrubbing, designed to correct soft memory errors
automatically without software intervention
- ECC L2 cache processors help improve data reliability and reduce

BladeCenter This powerful, highly integrated systems-management software
solution is built on industry standards and designed for ease of use.
Exploit your existing enterprise or workgroup management environments and
use rich security features to access and manage physically dispersed IT
assets more efficiently over the internet. It can help reduce costs
through:
- Reduced downtime
- Increased productivity of IT personnel and end users
- Reduced service and support costs
IT administrators can view the hardware configuration of remote
systems in detail and monitor the usage and performance of critical
components such as processors, HDDs, and memory. IBM Director can be
extended with optional add-ons for advanced server management,
deployment, and software distribution. All of these tools smoothly
integrate into IBM Director for consistent look-and-feel and single point
of management while taking advantage of IBM Directors monitoring,
scheduling, alerting, event management and group management capabilities.
- The IBM Director Server Plus Pack is a collection of five tools with
predictive and autonomic capabilities that help deliver optimal server
performance and high availability. The five tools include Capacity
Manager, Software Rejuvenation, Active PCI Manager, System Availability
and Rack Manager.
- Application Workload Manager extends IBM Director to enable the

BladeCenter Management Module
Use the management module in the BladeCenter to manage the BladeCenter
and obtain vital system information about your installed BladeCenter HS20
servers. The management module communicates with the blade servers
within the BladeCenter via an RS-485 intermanagement network. This
network relays vital information about individual blade servers such as:
- Temperature
- Voltages
- Power supply status
- Memory status
- Fan status
- HDD status
- Error and status log
You receive status and control all blade servers within the
BladeCenter. You can shut down and restart any blade server from
anywhere on the network to help save time and costs associated with
travel to the actual installation.
These manageability functions are provided through a self-contained
Web page, creating an easy and familiar way for administrators to
monitor, control, and maintain highly available BladeCenter
installations. The BladeCenter chassis ships standard with two
KVM/Management module. An optional IBM BladeCenter Redundant
KVM/Management module provides BladeCenter with even higher levels of
resiliency. While in the chassis, the second module is in passive or
"stand by" mode. If the active or "primary" module faults, the second
module is automatically enabled with all the configuration settings of
the primary module. Providing the customer with seamless remote
management and connectivity to the BladeCenter chassis for their most
critical applications.

The BladeCenter and BladeCenter HS20 servers are high-density blade
servers that are designed to function when required for Capacity On
Demand. The COD is configured so that 7 standard blades are active and 7
are on standby for activation as required by the customer.
The BladeCenter HS20 is a high-density design blade server that is
installed into the BladeCenter. This hot-swap blade server includes the
following features:
- Two 2.8 GHz Xeon processors with 512 KB full-speed cache and 533 MHz
quad-pumped FSB:
- 4 GB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM with Chipkill ECC system memory
- Dual Gb Ethernet switch connections
- Management processor
- SVGA video controller with 8 MB of video memory
- Network card connector and HS20 Fibre Channel Expansion Card
- IDE controller
- Two IDE HDD connectors - one 40 GB ATA-100 HDD standard

currently available 512 MB, and 1 GB DIMM options.
- Microprocessors must be of the same type and clock speed on each
BladeCenter HS20. Mixing microprocessors of different speeds or cache
size is not supported.
