Description

The 3592 Model J70 Controller offers two 2-Gbps Fibre Channel adapters for attaching 3592 Tape Drives. With the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive and FICON, the 3592 Model J70 is designed to provide up to 1.5 times the throughput of the 3590 Model A60 Controller. The 3592 Model J70 also has reliability and availability characteristics that the 3590 Model A60 offered, such as redundant power supplies with automatic failover and hot swap capabilities, redundant cooling, and IBM TotalStorage Master Console (TSMC) attachment. The 3592 Model J70 also includes the application performance and capacity enhancements that are available with the 3590 Model A60. The subsystem will operate in either 3590 native mode, or 3590 or 3490E drive emulation mode, depending on the drive model that is attached.

The 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive attached to a 3592 Model J70 Controller is designed to allow an application to issue a command to scale an individual tape cartridge to 60 GB capacity. The effect of capacity scaling to 60 GB capacity is to reduce the average locate time to a random record (from load point) to less than 30% of the normal locate time. Supported environments include IBM OS/390 and z/OS with DFSMShsm and DFSMSdfp Object Access Method (OAM).

The Enterprise Tape Controller 3592 Model J70 is a follow-on to the highly successful Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60. It is designed for zSeries and S/390 environments that require a high-performance tape solution. These environments include:

  • High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape.

  • Large-scale automated tape environments where performance and reliability are required. These are primarily half-inch tape drive environments.

  • Large-scale mass data archive applications where massive amounts of data need to be quickly saved to tape for storage and later recall. Examples include the seismic industry, data warehousing, and record management applications.

The 3592 Model J70 Controller and 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive are initial entries of a family of tape products that are designed to meet the growing needs of both new and existing IBM tape customers across a wide range of environments. Advantages of the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive with the 3592 Model J70 Controller include:

  • Higher performance, which can help reduce the number of tape drives required
  • Larger capacity, to help you reduce the number of cartridges required and floor space needed
  • A smaller form factor, which can help reduce the automation footprint
  • High reliability, to help you improve operations

FICON Attachment

The 3592 Model J70 has up to four 2-Gbps FICON attachments, twice the capability of the 3590 A60 Controller. The FICON maximum channel link speed of up to 200 MB/sec full duplex versus 17 MB/sec simplex for ESCON may increase tape performance. The 3592 Model J70 Controller is designed to be directly attached to host systems up to 10 kilometers away, or up to 100 kilometers with a FICON/FC switch with appropriate repeaters. FICON attachment is available when the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive or 3590 Tape Drives are attached to the 3592 Model J70. With the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive and FICON attachment, the 3592 Model J70 Controller is designed to provide up to 1.5 times the throughput of the 3590 Model A60 Controller.

In order to exploit the improved performance of the 3592 Tape Drive, there must be a 2-Gbps Fibre Channel infrastructure. This includes 2-Gbps FICON adapters on the 3592 Model J70, and drive attachment via the 2109 Model F16 SAN Fibre Channel Switch, as well as 2-Gbps capability on the zSeries server and/or Fibre Channel Director.

ESCON Attachment

The 3592 Model J70 can have up to eight ESCON attachments, available by ordering up to four dual-ported ESCON adapters. The 3592 Model J70 can be directly attached to ESCON channels on a S/390 or zSeries server, or to an ESCON director.

ESCON and FICON Intermix

The 3592 Model J70 Controller can intermix ESCON and FICON attachments on the same controller in the following maximum combinations:

  • Four FICON and 0 ESCON attachments
  • Three FICON and 2 ESCON attachments
  • Two FICON and 4 ESCON attachments
  • One FICON and 6 ESCON attachments
  • No FICON and 8 ESCON attachments

Drive Attachment

The 3592 Model J70 can be ordered with a choice of one of the following:

  • Two Fibre Channel adapters
  • Two dual-ported SCSI adapters

Fibre Channel adapters are required when attaching the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive. When attaching the 3592 Model J1A, or 3590 Tape Drives with the Fibre Channel attachment feature, a 2109 Model F16 or S16 Switch is required.

Capacity Scaling

The 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive attached to a 3592 Model J70 Controller is designed to allow an application to issue a command to scale an individual tape cartridge to a 60 GB capacity. The effect of capacity scaling to 60 GB is to reduce the average locate time to a random record (from load point) to less than 30% of the normal locate time.

Customers using OS/390 V2 R10 and z/OS can exploit the capacity scaling capability of the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive. A new data class parameter will determine if a tape is scaled to 60 GB. OPEN processing will scale a tape when the associated data class requests it and the tape is being written from load point (DISP+NEW, file sequence 1). On a subsequent reading of a performance scaled MEDIA5 tape, the data will be entirely contained in the first 60 GB of the tape, yielding very fast locate and read times. DFSMShsm and DFSMSdfp OAM can exploit this feature, as well as other applications that use standard Open/Close/EOV processing. Refer to the publication DFSMS Software Support for IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3592 (SC26-7514) for more information about software support for the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive.

For more information on using capacity scaling, please refer to the capacity scaling considerations section of the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3592 Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0464).

Additional Model J70 Capabilities

The 3592 Model J70 Controller also has reliability and availability characteristics that the 3590 Model A60 offered, such as redundant power supplies with automatic failover and hot swap capabilities, redundant cooling, and IBM TotalStorage Master Console (TSMC) attachment. The subsystem is designed to operate in either 3590 native mode, or 3590 or 3490E drive emulation mode, depending on the drive model that is attached. The 3592 Model J70 also includes the application performance and capacity enhancements that are available with the 3590 Model A60. These capabilities are available for both 3590 and 3592 attached drives. For more details on the application performance and capacity enhancements, refer to the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3592 Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0464).

Note: The actual throughput a customer may achieve is a function of many components, such as system processor, disk data rate, data block size, data compressibility, I/O attachments, SAN, and the system or application software being used. Although the drive is capable of a 40 MB/sec native data rate, other components may limit the actual effective data rate.

Product Positioning

The Enterprise Tape Controller 3592 Model J70 with the Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A provides higher levels of performance, cartridge capacity, and attachment capability for S/390 and zSeries customers. The 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive has significant performance and capacity benefits over the 3590 Tape Drive, as well as other half-inch tape drives such as the IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E.

The 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive with the 3592 Model J70 Controller is designed for high-performance computing environments where high reliability, capacity, and performance are important. They should be considered by:

  • Current 3590 customers in 3494, StorageTek ACS, or stand-alone environments where:

    • Space allocated to tape cartridges needs to be reduced within automation solutions or offline storage.

    • Backup windows are growing and there is a need for higher-performance tape drives to back up larger amounts of data in less time.

  • Customers in other large-scale tape environments, including:

    • High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape.

    • Large-scale automated tape installations where performance, capacity, and reliability are requirements.

    • Large-scale mass data archive applications where massive amounts of data need to be quickly saved to tape for storage and later recall. (Examples include the seismic industry, data warehousing, and record management applications.)

Or a Model J70 in a 3494 Model D14 Frame can attach to drives in an adjacent 3494 Model D12 Frame, thereby attaching up to a total of ten tape drives.

3590 Model A14 Attachment

Up to four Model H11 Tape Drives, up to four Model E11 Tape Drives, or up to four Model B11 Tape Drives can be placed with one 3592 Model J70 Controller in a 3590 Model A14 for non-library attachment to a zSeries or S/390 system. One feature #9059 should be specified on the 3592 Model J70 for each 3590 Tape Drive in the 3590 Model A14 that is attached to the Model J70 in that frame.

To support SCSI attachment of 3590 Tape Drives in two different Model A14 Frames, feature #4060 (Multiframe SCSI A14) must be specified on the frame that contains the 3592 Model J70 Controller, and feature #4062 (Multiframe SCSI Drives - Field Install) or feature #9062 (Multiframe SCSI Drives - Plant Install) must be specified on the other Model A14 Frame. Feature #9060 (Multiframe SCSI A14) must also be specified on the 3592 Model J70 Controller.

Up to eight 3590 Tape Drives may be attached in a multiframe SCSI configuration and all hardware and required cables between the 3592 Model J70 and the drives in the other Model A14 are included in these features. Because of SCSI cable length restrictions, the two Model A14 Frames must be installed adjacent to each other.

Rack Attachment

The 3592 Model J70 can be installed in a standard 19-inch rack such as the IBM 7014 Model T00 or T42 with up to four 3590 Tape Drives. For rack installation, feature #4641 must also be ordered on the 3592 Model J70. The SCSI cables from each 3590 Tape Drive to the 3592 Model J70 in that rack are included when feature #9059 (3590 Drive Attached) is specified on the Model J70 (the quantity of feature #9059 must equal the number of tape drives in the rack with the Model J70). To support SCSI attachment of 3590 Tape Drives in two different racks, feature #4065 (Multiframe SCSI Rack Attachment) must be specified on the Model J70. This feature includes cables to connect the Model J70 Controller to tape drives in the second rack, and necessary drive-to-drive interconnection cables in that rack. Up to eight 3590 Tape Drives in the two racks may be attached to the 3592 Model J70. Because of SCSI cable length restrictions, the two racks must be installed adjacent to each other.

Silo Compatible Frame Attachment

One to four 3590 Model H1A Tape Drives, one to four Model E1A Tape Drives, or one to four Model B1A Tape Drives can be installed in a Model C12 or C14 Silo Compatible Frame for attachment to a 3592 Model J70 Controller in a Model C10 Silo Compatible Frame. With multi-frame support, up to eight 3590 H model, E model, or B model Tape Drives can be attached to a single 3592 Model J70 in a StorageTek ACS environment. The 3590 E model Tape Drives cannot be intermixed on the same 3592 Model J70 controller with 3590 B model Tape Drives. The 3590 H model Tape Drives cannot be intermixed on the same 3592 Model J70 Controller with 3590 E model or B model Tape Drives.

The 3592 Model J70 also provides 3490E emulation capability that enables attached 3590 Tape Drives to appear to the host system as "3490E" tape drives. The 3490E emulation can be used with 3590 Tape Drives attached to a 3592 Model J70 Controller installed in a 3590 Model A14 stand-alone solution, in both the Model C12 and C14 Silo compatible solutions, or in rack-mounted subsystem solutions.

Dual Path Attachment

The Dual Path Attachment feature (#5245) provides the necessary cables and hardware to allow a 3592 Model J70 Controller in a 3494 Model D14 or D24 to connect the control path to a second internal LAN attachment on the 3494, the Dual Path Concentrator feature (#5246). Software Requirements

Software support for the 3590 or 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives attached through the 3592 Model J70 Controller is available to host systems such as zSeries and S/390 through ESCON or FICON channels. The subsystem will operate in either 3590 native mode, or 3590 or 3490E drive emulation mode (depending on the model). The 3590 or 3592 J1A Tape Drives are added to the host system's I/O configuration as if they were device type 3590 or 3490E.

The 3590 Tape Drives with SCSI or Fibre Channel attachment or the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives with Fibre Channel attachment are supported through the 3592 Model J70 Controller on the following minimum operating systems levels. Refer to the 3590 or 3592 PSP buckets for the latest information on required or recommended software maintenance. PTFs are required for the 3590 H model and 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives unless otherwise noted. Support for the WORM and Economy cartridges on the 3592 Model J1A may require code updates for zSeries or storage management software. PTFs are required for support of the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive and the new 3592 media types unless otherwise noted.

Note: The "Fast Access + Capacity" cartridge format, which has a "Fast Access" segment in the first 60 GB of a 300 GB cartridge, is not currently supported in the zSeries environment.

OS/390 or z/OS

Support for 3590 Tape Drives is provided for the following minimum software levels in either 3590 native mode, or 3590 or 3490 emulation mode (depending on the model):

  • OS/390 Version 2 Release 10 and DFSMS
  • z/OS Version 1 Release 1, and subsequent releases, and DFSMS
  • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTFs

PTFs are required for 3590 H model support.

Support for 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives is provided for the following minimum software levels in either 3590 or 3490 emulation mode:

  • OS/390 Version 2 Release 10 and DFSMS
  • z/OS Version 1 Release 1, and subsequent releases, and DFSMS
  • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTFs

For more information on the PTFs required for the 3592 Model J1A with OS/390 or z/OS, please refer to APAR OA02208.

Support for the 3592 WORM and Economy tape cartridges is provided for the following minimum software levels in 3590 emulation mode:

  • z/OS V1.3, and subsequent releases, with coexistence support provided at OS/390 V2.10, and above
  • EREP V3.5 plus PTFs

For more information on the PTFs required for the new 3592 media support, refer to the 3592 PSP bucket and enabling APAR OA06490.

Support for the 3590 H Model or E Model Tape Drives provides controls to allow intermixing 3590 H model, E model, and B model subsystems in an SMS-managed Enterprise Tape Library 3494. Allocations provide a desired drive type that is managed through a data class attribute for the 256-or 384-track recording format. Downward read compatibility of 128-track-recorded tapes on 3590 E model Tape Drives, or 128-or 256-track-recorded tapes on 3590 H model Tape Drives, is exploited in libraries with 128-track, 256-track, and 384-track subsystems. Shared common media pools are used for 3590 H model, E model, and B model subsystems. In an IBM tape library, the 3590 H model or E model Tape Drives are defined through HCD in the I/O configuration as device type 3590. 3490E emulation is not supported in an SMS-managed tape library environment. Appropriate software levels (and associated PTFs) are required for the 3590 H model even if you are not intermixing H model, E model, and B model subsystems in the library.

Support for the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives provides controls to allow intermixing the 3592 Model J1A with 3590 H model, E model, and B model subsystems in an SMS-managed Enterprise Tape Library 3494. Allocations provide a desired drive type that is managed through a data class attribute for the new EFMT1 (Enterprise Format 1) recording format. In an IBM tape library, the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives are defined through HCD in the I/O configuration as device type 3590. 3490E emulation is not supported in an SMS-managed tape library environment. The 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive is neither read or write compatible with 128-, 256-, or 384-track tapes. Appropriate software levels (and associated PTFs) are required for the 3592 Model J1A even if you are not intermixing them with 3590 Tape Drives in the library.

For 3590 or 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives not inside IBM tape libraries (non-library drives or drives located in Silo-compatible frames), the software support cannot manage allocation among multiple drive models that use the same emulation type (for example, 3590 H model, E model, and B model Tape Drives that may each be defined in the I/O configuration as device type 3590). Allocation for different drive models having the same device type can be managed under SMS as a manual library, or through local procedures or software products, such as Basic Tape Library Support (BTLS) or StorageTek's Host Software Component (HSC). Although the 3590 H Model or 3592 Model J1A device support PTFs do not manage allocation issues for mixed 3590 H models, E models, B models, and 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive outside libraries, this maintenance should be applied to realize capacity exploitation benefits with applications such as HSM, OAM Object support, and DFSORT and to enable EREP reporting by true device type or model. This maintenance is also required to enable the 3592 Model J1A and 3590 H model devices to come online.

The 3592 Model J1A attached to a 3592 Model J70 Controller is designed to allow an application to issue a command to scale an individual tape cartridge to 60 GB. The effect of capacity scaling to 60 GB capacity is to reduce the average locate time to a random record (from load point) to less than 30% of the normal locate time. Customers using OS/390 V2 R10 and z/OS can exploit the capacity scaling capability of the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive. A new data class parameter will determine if a tape is scaled to 60 GB. OPEN processing will scale a tape when the associated data class requests it and the tape is being written from load point (DISP=NEW, file sequence 1).

For more information on using capacity scaling, please refer to the capacity scaling considerations section of the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3592 Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0464).

z/VM

Supplies

For End Users and Remarketers

IBM data media supplies can be ordered directly through AAS using feature codes on the Enterprise Tape Library 3494 Frames. These features provide unlabeled data cartridges. Labeled, initialized, or bulk IBM 3592 Model J1A data media can be ordered directly through AAS using machine type 3599. Refer to the 3599 Sales Manual. IBM data media supplies are also planned to be available through media distributors.

For information about IBM branded media call 1-888-IBM Media in the U.S. and Canada or see:

http://www.storage.ibm.com/media

The part numbers for additional supplies are:

IBM Part
 Number Supply Item
-------- ----------------------------------------------------------
18P7534 IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 (Data)
18P7535 IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Cartridge 3592 (Cleaning)

Note: The 3592 data cartridge has servo tracks written on it. These tracks enable the 3592 Model J1A Tape Drive to accurately position the read/write head with respect to the media while the tape is in motion. If these servo tracks are damaged or removed (such as by Degausing), the cartridge is no longer useable.
