Product Positioning

The Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A is the follow-on for the highly successful Enterprise Tape Drive 3590. The 3592 Model J1A in the 3592 Model C20 Frame is supported in a wide range of environments including selected IBM eServer zSeries, S/390, IBM eServer pSeries, RS/6000, IBM eServer xSeries, Sun, and Hewlett Packard servers, as well as Intel-compatible servers running Microsoft Windows. It has significant performance and capacity benefits over the 3590 Tape Drive, as well as other half-inch tape drives such as the IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E.

The 3592 Model J1A is designed for high-performance computing environments where high reliability, capacity, and performance are mandated. It should be considered for current StorageTek ACS customers where:

  • Space allocated to tape cartridges needs to be reduced within automation solutions or offline storage

  • Backup windows are growing and there is a need for higher-performance tape drives to back up larger amounts of data in less time

  • A Fibre Channel attached drive with native switched fabric capability

IBM provides enterprise tape drives in a range of product offerings to meet a diverse set of customer requirements. The 3592 Model C20 Compatible Tape Drive Frame further enhances the family of products by providing the benefits of 3592 technology to users of a StorageTek 9310 (PowderHorn) ACS. This enables you to enjoy 3592 capacity, performance, reliability, and attachment benefits and still protect your StorageTek automated library investment. Tape drives can be installed in the Model C20 without disruption to ACS operations and coexist with existing StorageTek ACS software and hardware products.

The 3592 Model C20 Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame attached to a StorageTek ACS provides for attachment of 3592 Tape Drives to host systems with Fibre Channel adapters. In this Fibre Channel attach offering, the Model C20 allows hosts, such as the zSeries Linux, pSeries, RS/6000, HP, or Sun servers, to attach to 3590 Tape Drives in an ACS without the need for an additional control unit and with no disruption to the library environment. Alternatively, 3592 drives in the Model C20 can also be attached to ESCON or FICON hosts through an externally attached 3592 Model J70 Controller or 3590 Model A60 Controller in a 3590 Model C10 Silo Compatible Frame.

The 3592 Model J70 or 3590 Model A60 Controller has a 3490E emulation option that can be set at installation time to allow a 3592 Tape Drive to be presented to a host as though it were a "3490E" device, thus eliminating the need for any major software upgrades to support the device. This capability is critical to the Silo Compatible environment, as the Host Software Component (HSC) for the StorageTek ACS does not require any modifications to enable the 3590 solution when attached to the ACS.

The 3590 Model C10 and 3592 Model C20 Silo Compatible Frames allow you to enjoy the immediate benefits of capacity, performance, reliability, and attachment provided by 3592 Tape Drives and 3592 Model J70 or 3590 Model A60 Controllers. These storage assets can later be used in a variety of IBM tape solutions from stand-alone 3592 tape subsystems to the fully automated Enterprise Tape Library 3494. So, when you decide to migrate to a complete IBM tape solution, these assets can be used in that solution.

Hardware Requirements Software Requirements

The Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame 3590 Model C20 is for attachment of 3592 Tape Drives in a StorageTek Automated Cartridge System (ACS) to ESCON or FICON channels on S/390 or zSeries systems, or to Fibre Channel interface of open systems. It provides new levels of function, performance, reliability, and cartridge capacity to StorageTek ACS users and is an extension to the Enterprise Tape Drive 3592. The Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 is designed for host systems that require reliable, high performance tape support for backup restore, archive, and data interchange.

The 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives in the 3592 Model C20 are arranged in two columns of ten drives each. If the StorageTek ACS has the four-drive or ten-drive wall panel, then the Air Box Drive Cover feature (#4840) must be installed and a maximum of ten or less tape drives can be installed. All 3592 Model J1A Tape Drives come in a canister, and up to two tape drives can be installed in each C20 Drive Shelf Pair (#4830). Each C20 Drive Shelf Pair provides redundant power supplies for both tape drives installed in that Drive Shelf Pair.

The 3592 Tape Drives can be directly connected to the Fibre Channel interface of open systems. Alternatively they can be connected through a 3592 Model J70 Controller or 3590 Model A60 Controller in a 3590 Model C10 Silo Compatible Frame for attachment to ESCON or FICON channels. Up to 12 tape drives can be attached to a single 3592 Model J70 Controller or Model A60 Controller, and tape drives in the Model C20 can be attached to different controllers. The controller can allow the operating system to communicate with the 3592 drives as if they were "3490E" tape drives. This enables attachment of 3592 Tape Drives without installing new system software or modifying StorageTek software. This subsystem will enable new levels of reliability and cartridge capacity compared to existing 36-track technology. Tapes are written in 3592 media format and most software will use the full capacity of the tape.
