Description

The Enterprise Tape System 3590 demonstrates IBM's continued commitment to providing advanced tape solutions to meet the growing demands of the enterprise. The IBM 3590 offers attachment to the iSeries (AS/400), pSeries (RS/6000), xSeries, zSeries (S/390), Hewlett Packard ** HP, Linux **, Microsoft ** Windows NT/2000, and Sun ** servers. The 3590 is designed for high-performance tape applications, including:

  • High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape.

  • Large-scale automated tape environments where performance and reliability are required. These are primarily half-inch tape drive environments.

  • Large-scale mass data archive applications where massive amounts of data need to be quickly saved to tape for storage and later recall. Examples include the seismic industry, data warehousing, and record management applications.

IBM has enhanced the popular Enterprise Tape System 3590 by introducing Model H1A Tape Drives (H Models). These enhanced models are intended to meet the growing needs of both new and existing customers across a wide number of environments.

Advantages of these 3590 H Model Tape Drive include:

  • Larger capacity, meaning that fewer cartridges are required and floor space can be reduced

  • Higher performance than the B Model (and the same performance as the E model), which can reduce the number of tape drives

  • A wide range of attachment options, enabling greater usage of the 3590

  • High reliability, which can improve operations

  • Investment protection, allowing over 87,000 existing 3590 B Model and E Model Tape Drives to be upgraded and still read existing tape data cartridges

Capacity

These 3590 H Models employ a new fifth-generation magneto-resistive (MR) head design that provides a 50% increase in the amount of data that can be stored on a cartridge (versus an E model) and three times the data that can be stored on a cartridge (versus a B model). The following table compares the cartridge capacity versus the current B and E Models:

                                                      Capacity
                        Native Cartridge Capacity with 3:1
                       --------------------------- Compression
Cartridge Description B Model E Model H Model H Model

 Tape Cartridge

This capacity increase is due to increasing the number of tracks written to 384 tracks, versus 256 tracks written by the E model, and 128 tracks written by the B model. This can be very beneficial in space savings and economy of data storage, since it lowers the cost of storage per megabyte. For applications that fill current data cartridges this can reduce the number of tape cartridges required. The reduced number of cartridges can also free up floor space for other requirements as well as reduce the number of automation slots used.

Performance

The 3590 H Models, with a 14 MB/s native transfer rate, offer a 50% higher data transfer rate than the B model and the same high performance as the E Model. Higher data rate performance allows tape applications to read or write data more quickly and has the potential of reducing the number of tape drives required. Using the built-in data compression capability, it can more effectively utilize the full capability of the 40 MB per second Ultra SCSI interface. It can also attach directly to the growing number of open systems that support native Fibre Channel Attachment.

Note: The actual throughput a customer may achieve is a function of many components, such as system processor, disk data rate, data block size, data compressibility, I/O attachments, and the system or application software used. Thus, although the drive is capable of a 14-40 MB/sec instantaneous data rate, other components of the system may limit the actual effective data rate.

Attachment Options

These 3590 H Models allow a wide range of attachment flexibility. The drives can be directly attached to open systems servers with Ultra SCSI or Fibre Channel attachments, or to ESCON or FICON servers with the 3590 Model A60 Controller. These 3590 H Models are supported in a wide range of environments including selected zSeries, S/390, iSeries, AS/400, pSeries, RS/6000, xSeries, Sun, and HP servers, as well as Intel-compatible servers running Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Linux. These 3590 H Models provide exceptional value-add when supported in an Enterprise Tape Library 3494 and in a StorageTek 4410 or 9310 Automated Cartridge System (ACS) environment.

Enterprise Tape Library 3494 Attachment

The IBM 3590 Model H1A was designed for easy attachment in models of the Enterprise Tape Library 3494. The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive Expansion Frame 3494 Model D12 can contain up to six 3590 drives while an IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library Base Frame 3494 Model L12 can contain up to two 3590 drives. The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive Expansion Frame 3494 Model D14 can contain up to four 3590 drives and an IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Controller 3590 Model A60. If a 3494 Model L14 or D14 Frame contains one or more 3590 Model H1A drives, either a 3590 Model A60 controller must also be installed in that frame or the drives must be attached to an A60 controller in an adjacent Model D14 frame. The 3590 drives can be installed in the same libraries with 3490E drives.

Investment Protection

Investment protection is another key benefit of the 3590 H Models. Your current 3590 B or E Model can be upgraded to this 3590 H Model, allowing you to take advantage of the many benefits provided by the H Models. In addition, as an accepted standard in the industry, there are millions of 3590 data cartridges in use by customers today, so your investment in media is also protected. The H Models will utilize the 3590 data cartridges in the following ways:

  • Read the current 128-track cartridge created by 3590 B Models. And, it can read them at the higher data rate of 14 MB/sec. The H Models can also read the current 256-track cartridges created by the 3590 E Models. Data stored for archive or retention purposes can be retained and read by these models, thus preserving a sizable investment in media.

  • Read and write on the cartridges in 384-track format, increasing the amount of data stored.

The existing 3590 B Model and E Model tape drives will remain available after the general availability of these models, and will continue to meet the needs of many customers.

The 3590 provides attachment to leading non-IBM servers, and attachments are tested as part of the IBM TotalStorage Proven program to ensure compability and interoperability. The IBM TotalStorage Proven means that applications and hardware you choose from leading companies, combined with IBM state-of-the art storage technology, provide you with flexible, ready to run solutions that help address your software and infrastructure needs. They offer significant enhancements in performance, capacity, data integrity, reliability, and availability over IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E tape drives.

The H Models are designed for high performance, capacity conscious, and high reliability environments. The 3590 is a proven tape solution with over 87,000 tape drive shipments worldwide, and over 16 million cartridges in use. In 1998, the ANSI and ECMA tape standards committees endorsed the 3590 B Model recording format, cartridge, and media as a tape industry Standard. The 3590 B, E, and H Models offer a combination of proven performance, reliability, and capacity to solve your data storage needs. In addition, as an accepted media standard, 3590 media is a great value measured in terms of price/megabyte.

The H Models are designed for high-performance computing environments where high reliability, capacity, and performance are mandated. They should be considered in the following environments:

  • High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape

  • Large-scale automated tape installations where performance, capacity, and reliability are requirements

  • Current 3590 E tape environments where:
    • Space allocated to tape cartridges needs to be reduced within automation solutions or offline storage and you can utilize the cartridge capacity increase with the H Models
    • Read compatibility of existing 3590 data cartridges is Critical

  • Current 3590 B tape environments where:
    • Backup windows are growing and there is a need for higher-performance tape drives to back up larger amounts of data in less time
    • Space allocated to tape cartridges needs to be reduced within automation solutions or offline storage and you can utilize the cartridge capacity increase with the H Models
    • Customers that would like the performance and distance benefits of using Fibre Channel
    • Read compatibility of existing 3590 data cartridges is Critical

  • Installations where an Enterprise Tape Library 3494 is used

  • StorageTek ACS environments where higher capacity, performance, or reliability is needed

The 3590 family of tape drives will continue to be the tape drive of choice for any environment where high reliability, capacity, and performance are mandated.

Note: Although the 3590 provides the capability of very high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved.

Hardware Requirements Software Requirements

The IBM 3590 H Model Tape Drives are intended for use on iSeries, AS/400, pSeries, RS/6000, xSeries, zSeries, S/390, ES/3090, ES/9000, HP, Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Sun systems that require reliable, high performance tape support for backup restore, archive, and data interchange. An advanced serpentine recording technique which makes sixteen passes along the tape is used to provide greater capacity and performance. The head element is composed of two groups of 16-track read/write heads. The 3590 writes 16 data tracks at a time to the end of the tape and electronically switches heads to write 16 different interleaved tracks and records back on the tape to the beginning. The head is then indexed (physically moved) slightly to record the next set of tracks. A total of 384 tracks are recorded on the 3590 cartridge. Fully written tapes are positioned back at the load point, virtually eliminating the rewind operation as with 3490E tape drives. The "Locate" function has been enhanced to position the drive on the proper track and location without having to sequentially search the entire recorded tape.

The 3590 Model H1A is designed for automation in the Enterprise Tape Library 3494. This model includes an integrated auto-ranging power supply and a 3590 tape transport. They can be ordered with either an integrated SCSI-3 controller with two ports that support a 16-bit, fast-and-wide, Ultra SCSI differential interface or a dual ported Fibre Channel attachment interface. Each drive has an operator panel with a display and menu control switches for use by the operator.

The 3590 H Model Tape Drives have a 14 MBps device data rate, which is 50% faster than 3590 B Model Tape Drives and the same high performance as the 3590 E Model Tape Drives. With 3:1 compression, the 3590 drive may achieve a sustained data rate of up to 34 MBps on the Ultra SCSI interface, and up to 42 MBps on the Fibre Channel interface. The actual throughput achieved in a system environment, however, will be a function of many components, such as system processor, disk data rate, data block size, data compressibility, I/O attachments, and the system or application software used.

The 3590 H Models can read or write twice as much data as the B Models on the 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape and on the 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape. With the H Models, the cartridge can contain up to 60 GB of uncompressed data per cartridge. The increased capacity of the 3590 cartridges thus allows the ACF to typically contain from 300 GB to 1.8 TB of data.

The 3590 cartridge tape has servo tracks written on it. These tracks enable the 3590 drive to accurately position the read/write head with respect to the media while the tape is in motion.

Other operating characteristics are:

  • Tape speed: 3.68 meters per second (145 inches per second)

  • Search/Rewind speed: 5.5 meters per second (217 inches per second)

  • Rewind Times:
    • Full cartridge rewind time: 2 Seconds
    • Maximum rewind time per cartridge: 60 seconds for the High Performance Cartridge Tape and 120 seconds for the Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape

Limitations

The SCSI interface supports a maximum 2 MB block size. The SCSI differential interface is a 2-byte wide Ultra SCSI interface.

Although multiple systems may be attached to a 3590 tape drive, the systems cannot use the drive simultaneously. The 3590 can only be varied online to one system at a time.

Only two AS/400 systems may be SCSI attached directly to the 3590, one to each of the two 3590 SCSI ports.

3590 Model H1A Tape Drives cannot be attached to the same 3590 Model A60 Controller with 3590 Model E11 or E1A Tape Drives, or with 3590 Model B11 or B1A Tape Drives. The H Model tape drives are not supported for attachment to the following:

  • 3590 Model A50 or A00 Controller
  • 3591 Model A01 Control Unit
  • 3494 Virtual Tape Server
  • 3495 Tape Library
  • 2108 SAN Data Gateway.
  • NUMA-Q servers

Hardware Requirements

3590 Model H1A Tape Drive

The 3590 Model H1A Tape Drive is for installation in an Enterprise Tape Library 3494, or a 3590 Model C12 or C14 Silo Compatible Frame. Up to two drives can be installed in a 3494 Model L12 or L14. For attachment to SCSI or Fibre channels, up to six drives can be installed in a 3494 Model D12. For attachment to ESCON or FICON channels, a 3590 Model A60 Controller is required, and up to four drives can be installed in a 3494 Model D14. Refer to the description of the 3494 for further information.

Four Model H1A drives can also be installed in a 3590 Model C12 or C14 Silo Compatible Frame for attachment to a StorageTek ACS. A 3590 Model A60 Controller is required for attachment of these drives to ESCON or FICON channels on ES/3090, ES/9000, S/390, or zSeries systems. SCSI cables for attaching Model H1A drives in a Model C12 or C14 to a Model A60 Controller may be specified on the Model C12 or C14. Refer to the 3590 Model C12 or C14 sales manuals for additional information. Feature #2003 must be ordered on each Model H1A drive that is to be installed in a Model C12 or C14. Feature #2004 must be ordered on an existing Model H1A to convert that drive in the field for installation in a C12 or C14. Feature #2005 must be ordered to remove a Model H1A from a C12 or C14 for reinstallation in a 3494 Tape Library.

The 3590 Model H1A (H Model) Tape Drives are orderable with either a SCSI or Fibre Channel attachment. To get the Fibre Channel attachment capability, add one of the following features to each tape drive:

  • 9510 (Fibre Channel Attachment - Plant) can be added to all new orders of 3590 Model H1A Tape Drives. If this feature is not included, the tape drive will have the standard Ultra SCSI attachment.

  • 3510 (Fibre Channel Attachment - Field) can be added to any installed 3590 Model H1A Tape Drive to change the tape drive attachment from the standard Ultra SCSI attachment to Fibre Channel attachment.

Installed 3590 H Model Tape Drives that are selected to be converted to Fibre Channel attachment must be the last drives on any SCSI bus in the frame, so the remaining SCSI bus can remain intact. Refer to the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape System 3590 Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0329), the IBM TotalStorage Silo Compatible Frame 3590 Introduction, Planning, and User's Guide (GA32-0366), or the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0448) for planning information.

Appropriate Fibre Channel cable(s) should be ordered for each tape drive. Refer to the Fibre Channel Cables section of the Special Feature Codes for Fibre Channel cable information.

The Install Fibre Channel Drive feature (#3511) must be added to the 3590 Model C12 frame, or the 3494 tape library Model L12 or D12 frame, to provide the hardware support for each 3590 Model H1A Tape Drive with Fibre Channel Attachment features installed in those frames.

The 3590 Tape Drives can utilize either the 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape (Extended Length Cartridge) or the 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape (Standard Length Cartridge). The Extended Length Cartridge has a native capacity that is twice the capacity of the Standard Length Cartridge.

Many solutions require that all 3590 drives in the subsystem have the Extended Media Support capability to optimize drive/media allocation. If Extended Length Cartridges are used, IBM recommends updating all tape drives, to allow flexibility to mount Extended Length Cartridges on any tape drive. However, if Extended Length Cartridges are to be used only on tape drives that are part of a defined subset, then all drives in that subset must be updated. Some examples are:

  • ESCON or FICON attached tape drives in individual Enterprise Tape Library 3494s and StorageTek Automated Cartridge Systems (ACS)

  • 3590 stand-alone drives in an MVS complex

All 3590 H Model Tape Drives support the Extended Length Cartridge. The Extended Media Support feature (#9780) must be added to the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library Base Frame 3494 Model L10, L12, L14, or the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive Expansion Frame 3494 Model D12 or D14, to provide the library manager support for any 3494 tape library that will contain the new Extended Length Cartridges. If 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape is used in the Enterprise Tape Library 3494, this feature must be on the Tape Drive Expansion Frame 3494 Model D12 or D14 containing the 3590 Tape Drives with Extended Media Support, and also on the Tape Library Base Frame 3494 Model L10, L12, or L14.

The Extended Media Support feature (#9780) must be added to the 3590 Model A14 or C12 to provide the subsystem support for the Extended Length Cartridges. If 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape is used in any 3590 Tape Drive installed in that 3590 Model A14 or C12, then this feature must be on that 3590 Model A14 or C12 frame also.

The following cables are recommended for drive-to-drive chaining as they have a dual "hammerhead" connector on each end and allow the SCSI bus to be disconnected from the drive without disconnecting the SCSI bus connection to the other drives.

  • #5129 2.9-Meter SCSI Cable
  • #5134 3.4-Meter SCSI Cable
  • #5138 4.0-Meter SCSI Cable

The other cables have a "hammerhead" connector on one end and a single straight connector on the other end (for attachment to a host system).

Maximum: Two. Plant or Field Installable.

(#5129) 2.9-Meter SCSI Cable

Supplies a 2.9-meter differential SCSI cable with high-density 68-pin connectors that is used to connect to another drive on the same SCSI port of a host.

Maximum: Two. Plant or Field Installable.

(#5134) 3.4-Meter SCSI Cable

Supplies a 3.4-meter differential SCSI cable with high-density 68-pin connectors that is used to connect to another drive on the same SCSI port of a host.

Maximum: Two. Plant or Field Installable.

(#5138) 4.0-Meter SCSI Cable

Supplies a 4.0-meter differential SCSI cable with high-density 68-pin connectors that is used to connect to another drive on the same SCSI port of a host.

Maximum: Two. Plant or Field Installable.

(#5145) 4.5-Meter SCSI Cable

Supplies one 4.5-meter differential SCSI cable with high-density 68-pin connectors on both ends. This is the minimum length SCSI cable required to connect a 3590 Model H1A to a SCSI port on a host system.

Maximum: Two. Plant or Field Installable.

Fibre Channel Cables

A fiber optic cable is required for attaching a 3590 H Model Tape Drive with the Fibre Channel Attachment feature #9510 or #3510 to host Fibre Channel adapters, the IBM 2109 SAN Fibre Channel Switch, or other storage area Fibre Channel components. The cable can be customer supplied, or ordered with the 3590 Tape Drive in the lengths available. The attaching fiber cable must be 50.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 500 meters. The connection is a duplex SC connector type. If attaching to host adapters that have an LC connector, such as the PCI Fibre Channel Tape Controller (#2765) on an iSeries model, or the Gigabit Fibre Channel Adapter for 64-bit PCI Bus (#6228) on a pSeries model, you should use the LC/SC cables. If you have installed cables with SC connectors, you can order the LC-SC Adapter Kit (iSeries #0371) with your iSeries model, or the LC-SC Fibre Channel Converter Cable (pSeries #2456) with your pSeries model. The Fibre Channel cables on the 3590 H Model Tape Drives are provided in the lengths indicated.
