The IBM TotalStorage (TM) Enterprise Tape System 3590 provides high
levels of capacity, performance, and reliability for IBM eServer iSeries
(AS/400), IBM eServer pSeries (RS/6000), IBM eServer xSeries, IBM
eServer zSeries (S/390), and a variety of non-IBM UNIX and Microsoft
Windows** systems. It offers significant enhancements over previous
IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E tape drives and demonstrates IBM's continued
leadership in storage solutions. The Enterprise Tape System 3590
includes tape drives and controllers that can be flexibly configured
in a broad range of solutions that includes stand-alone frames or
racks, or in automated library solutions to meet a broad set of
customer requirements. The 3590 Tape Drives can be attached to a SCSI
host interface or Fibre Channel interface of selected IBM and non-IBM
midrange and open systems. The tape drives can also attach to ESCON
and FICON channels on host systems through a 3590 controller.
Model Abstract 3590-B1A
(No Longer Available as of December 31, 2004)
The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590 Model B1A comes
without the ACF and is designed to go into the IBM TotalStorage
Enterprise Automated Tape Library 3494. It can also go in the IBM
TotalStorage Silo Compatible Tape Drive Frame 3590 Model C12 or C14 for
attachment to a StorageTek Automated Cartridge System (ACS). This model
includes an integrated SCSI-3 controller with two ports that support a
16-bit, fast-and-wide, Ultra SCSI differential interface. The 3590 Model
B1A Tape Drive has a 9 MB/second native date rate (with compression up to
27 MB/second sustained data rate).
The Enterprise Tape System 3590 demonstrates IBM's continued
commitment to providing advanced tape solutions to meet the growing
demands of the enterprise. The IBM 3590 offers attachment to the iSeries
(AS/400), pSeries (RS/6000), xSeries (NUMA-Q), zSeries (S/390), Hewlett
Packard ** HP, Linux **, Microsoft ** Windows NT/2000, and Sun **
servers. It provides new levels of function, performance, reliability,
and cartridge capacity and is an extension to IBM's family of 3480, 3490,
and 3490E high performance tape drives. The 3590 utilizes a 16-track
serpentine longitudinal recording technique along with improved
compaction technology to deliver improvements in capacity and
performance. It builds on the proven reliability of the IBM 3490E tape
path and is designed for highly reliable start-stop or streaming
operation. The tape drive utilizes a cartridge similar in size to the
3480/3490 cartridge and thus is compatible with the Enterprise Tape
Library 3494. Compared to the 3490E tape drives, it is designed to
offer:
Higher performance - with a 40 MB/second Ultra SCSI interface on the
tape drive (9 MB/second device data rate)
Larger capacity cartridge - 10 GB or 20 GB uncompressed
LZ1 compression that provides up to 3:1 capacity improvement
Significantly increased reliability
Reduced overall operations costs
Availability in frame and rack mounting
Higher Performance
The IBM 3590 offers a new level of performance for tape subsystems.
The drive data rate of 9 MB/sec is three times faster than previous IBM
3480, 3490, or 3490E tape drives allowing tape applications to read or
write data more quickly. Using the built-in data compression capability,
it can more effectively utilize the full capability of the 40 MB per
second Ultra SCSI interface.
Note: The actual throughput a customer may achieve is a function of many
components, such as system processor, disk data rate, data block size,
data compressibility, I/O attachments, and the system or application
software used. Thus, although the drive is capable of a 9-40 MB/sec
instantaneous data rate, other components of the system may limit the
actual effective data rate.
Growth Enablement - Improved Efficiency
Since data transfer rates and throughput have been greatly enhanced,
customers can process more tape applications and run tape-related
workloads more quickly. Customers with limited time for systems backup
or with large amounts of disk storage need a high-performance tape
solution to back up their systems within the time available. The 3590
can provide greater efficiency of tape operations and may provide relief
to customers who have difficulty achieving their batch window. In the
event of loss or damage to files on disk storage, the performance of the
3590 can speed up system recovery. Improved tape efficiency will also
enable the growth of new applications across the enterprise.
Business Solutions - Enable Customers Competitive Advantage
Customers who run applications that are highly dependent upon tape
processing speed will be able to take advantage of the significant
performance improvements in the IBM 3590. Businesses that have
engineering /scientific applications that record or analyze large amounts
of tape data will benefit from improved subsystem performance. Those
customers who rely on the processing of large amounts of tape data as a
critical component of their business can become more productive and can
in effect gain a competitive advantage by producing more work in less
time.
Expanded Capacity
The 3590 uses a metal particle media and an enhanced compression
technique to deliver vastly superior capacity as compared to the 3490E.
The 3590 cartridges have an uncompressed data capacity of 10 GB or 20 GB.
The capacity of an individual Model B11 drive has further been increased
by the addition of the Automatic Cartridge Facility (ACF), which allows
an operator to mount ten cartridges at a time via a magazine. The 3590
Model B11 or B1A Tape Drives shipped on or after March 3, 2000, or with
feature #5780 (Extended Media Support - BXX), will support two 3590
cartridge types:
The 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape, which provides up to 10 GB
uncompressed
The 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape, which provides up
to 20 GB uncompressed
With LZ1 data compression, the cartridges can contain up to three
times these capacities. Exploitation of the capacity is a function of
data characteristics.
Systems Management - Reduces Operations Costs
The increased capacity of the IBM 3590 greatly reduces the number of
cartridges that must be purchased and managed by the operations staff and
systems programmers. For customers with larger storage requirements, the
new cartridge dramatically expands the capacity of the Enterprise Tape
Library 3494. The Model B1A Tape Drive can be used for attachment in
those libraries.
Growth Enablement - Increased Automation
In an Enterprise Tape Library 3494 , or in a 3590 Model C12 Silo
Compatible Frame attached to a StorageTek ACS, the new cartridge is
designed to significantly reduce the cost per megabyte of an automated
storage slot. This provides a cost-effective means to automate shelf
data which was previously too expensive to place inside the library.
Customers will be able to justify automation of a greater portion of
their total tape inventory, with this reduced cost of storage. The
increased capacity of the 3590 cartridge enables more data to reside in a
single library than ever before. Many customers will be able to put
their entire tape storage in a single 3494. Customers who wish to
achieve a true "lights out" operation will be able to do so more cost
effectively because of the enhanced cartridge capacity.
Business Solutions - Competitive Advantage
The expanded capacity of the 3590 cartridge can lower the cost of tape
storage. Fewer cartridges are required to store data, thus reducing
space and storage costs significantly. The expense of an automated
storage slot often limited the amount of data that could be cost-
justifiably placed within a tape library. With the reduced cost per
megabyte of an automated storage slot, customers can automate a greater
portion of their data, improving their competitive advantage.
Improved Reliability and Data Integrity
The 3590 Tape Drive is designed for even higher reliability than the
already highly reliable 3490E tape drives. With the increased data on a
3590 cartridge, the need to increase the data integrity was apparent.
The 3590 incorporates many features to improve its reliability such as an
improved Error Correction Code (ECC) and servo tracks written on each
tape cartridge to ensure accurate reading and writing of the data. The
new media has also been designed to improve the reliability and archive
life. A portion of the cartridge has been reserved for an error history
that is continually updated after each use to aid in early identification
of potential media problems. In addition, each 3590 contains resident
advanced diagnostics that dynamically monitor the operation of the drive
to detect potential problems and aid in fast resolution should they
occur.
Systems Management - Improved Availability
Data integrity is important to all customers. The reliability of tape
systems is of increased importance for customers who do unattended backup
of their systems. The tape drives need to reliably complete the backup
of the system without problems, as no operators are present to deal with
hardware problems or restart the backup process. In the event of a
catastrophe, requiring the restoration of disk data, the tape must be
reliable to ensure successful restoration. Advance identification of
potential drive or media problems enable operators to avoid critical
outages when they can least afford them. Better diagnostics allow a
quicker resolution when they occur. More reliable tape drives improve
the availability of the entire system.
Systems Management - IS Productivity
The 3590 and MVS exploitation will significantly reduce the amount of
time for the detection and recovery of errors (hang conditions). This is
achieved by the new asynchronous operation of long-running commands as
well as the implementation of the reset allegiance function. Detection
and recovery times of typically over 20 minutes for the 3490 tape
subsystem will be reduced to 3-6 minutes with the 3590.
Enterprise Tape Library 3494 Attachment
The 3590 Model B1A Tape Drive was designed for easy attachment in
models of the Enterprise Tape Library 3494. The IBM TotalStorage
Enterprise Tape Drive Expansion Frame 3494 Model D12 can contain up to
six 3590 Tape Drives while an IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library
Base Frame 3494 Model L12 can contain up to two 3590 Tape Drives. The
IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive Expansion Frame 3494 Model D14 can
contain up to four 3590 drives and an IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape
Controller 3590 Model A60. If a 3494 Model L14 or D14 Frame contains one
or more 3590 Model B1A drives, a 3590 Model A60 Controller must also be
installed in that frame, or the drives must be attached to a Model A60 in
an adjacent Model D14 frame. The 3590 drives can be installed in the
same libraries with 3490E drives.
Investment Protection - Upgradability
Customers with existing 3494 libraries will be able to add the IBM
3590 drives to their library and take advantage of their increased speed
and capacity. The 3494 Model L12 or L14 can attach either Model D12 or
D14 frames, with 3590 drives inside, or attach Model D10 frames with
3490E drives. Likewise, a 3494 Model L10, with 3490E drives, can attach
a Model D12 or D14 with the new 3590 drives. Customers can also choose
to replace 3490E drives with the 3590 in existing 3494 frames. As a
customer converts the cartridge inventory from 3480 or 3490E cartridges
to the new 3590 cartridges, the 3494 frames can be converted to new
models with 3590 drives. Thus, the customer's investment in an
Enterprise Tape Library 3494 is enhanced.
Systems Management - Operations Productivity
In the past, integration of new technology often required a
significant conversion effort. With 3490E drives and 3590 drives in the
same library, customers will be able to copy data sets from the older
drives to new 3590 drives inside the library without requiring operators
to mount or dismount any cartridges. Operations will be able to convert
data to the new cartridges much easier and faster and be able to take
advantage of the new 3590 technology sooner.
Model Description 3590-B1A
The 3590 Model B1A is a 3590 tape subsystem that can be mounted in an
Enterprise Tape Library 3494, a 3590 Model A14 Frame, a 3590 Model C12
Frame, or a 3590 Model C14 Frame. It includes one 3590 1/2-inch
cartridge tape drive and an integrated SCSI-3 controller with two Ultra
SCSI differential adapter ports. Shipments of the 3590 Model B11 and B1A
Tape Drives prior to January 29, 1999 only supported a 20 MB/sec SCSI
interface. The 3590 tape drives with the 40 MB/sec Ultra SCSI interface
are identified by a "Magstar Ultra" label on the rear cover near the
power supply switch. Also, "ULTRA" is displayed on the operator panel
during operation. No Automatic Cartridge Facility (ACF) is used.
The Enterprise Tape System 3590 is IBM's highest performance, large-
capacity tape subsystem. It should be the tape drive of choice for any
environment where very reliable, fast tape data rate or high capacity is
needed. It offers significant enhancements in performance, capacity, and
reliability over today's IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E tape drives. The IBM
3590 may relieve backup time constraints and provide the increased
capacity needed to support today's growing disk backup requirements.
Within an automated library, it can also provide unattended tape backup
operation for larger amounts of data.
Although the 3590 provides the capability of very high tape
performance, other components of the system may limit the actual
performance achieved.
The IBM 3590 also offers the greatest performance and capacity for use
in the Enterprise Tape Library 3494. It can be intermixed in the 3494
with IBM 3490E tape drives to provide compatibility to read/write to
those tape cartridges.

The 3590 Model B1A is intended for use on the iSeries (AS/400),
pSeries (RS/6000), xSeries (NUMA-Q), zSeries (S/390), Hewlett Packard HP,
Linux, Microsoft Windows NT/2000, and Sun servers that require reliable,
high performance tape support for backup restore, archive, and data
interchange. An advanced serpentine recording technique which makes
eight passes along the tape is used to provide greater capacity and
performance. The 3590 writes 16 data tracks at a time to the end of the
tape and electronically switches to 16 different interleaved tracks and
records back on the tape to the beginning. The head is indexed
(physically moved) slightly to record the next set of tracks. A total of
128 tracks are thus recorded on the 3590 cartridge. Fully written tapes
are positioned back at the load point, virtually eliminating the rewind
operation as with 3490E tape drives. The "Locate" function has been
enhanced to position the drive on the proper track and location without
having to sequentially search the entire recorded tape.
The 3590 Model B11 is the rack mountable version with an Automatic
Cartridge Facility (ACF) and the Model B1A is designed for automation in
the Enterprise Tape Library 3494 or StorageTek Automated Cartridge System
(ACS). Both models include an integrated SCSI-3 controller, an
integrated auto-ranging power supply, two SCSI differential 16-bit
interface ports, and a 3590 tape transport. Each drive has an operator
panel with a display and menu control switches for use by the operator.
The Model B11 includes a ten cartridge ACF with a cartridge magazine
which has a random mode operation feature that allows random access to
any cartridge in the ACF. Status indicators on each cell of the ACF
alert the operator to conditions that may need to be addressed. The
improved 10-cartridge ACF, coupled with the increased capacity of the
3590 cartridges, will reduce the frequency for operator interaction with
the tape subsystem. The Ultra SCSI differential interface can support
16-bit and 8-bit transmission. An interposer is available to allow
attachment to 8-bit SCSI-DE adapters. Other standard features include a
16 MByte dynamic data buffer, an improved data compression, auto-blocking
of small records, and one-pass-read-after write. Drive reliability is
improved by the use of an enhanced error correction code, and the use of
servo tracks for read and write.
The IBM 3590 Model B11 and B1A Tape Drives have a 9 MByte per second
device data rate, which is three times faster than IBM 3480/3490/3490E
tape drives. As each drive has its own integrated controller, the
controller is no longer a bottleneck to achieving maximum performance of
the drive. With 3:1 compression, the 3590 drive may achieve a sustained
data rate of up to 27 MB per second. The actual throughput achieved in a
system environment, however, will be a function of many components, such
as system processor, disk data rate, data block size, data
compressibility, I/O attachments, and the system or application software
used.
The 3590 uses the 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape or the 3590
Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape. These cartridges contain metal
particle media to record 10 GB to 20 GB of uncompressed data per
cartridge. In addition, an improved data compression technique is used
to provide even greater capacity for data that can be compressed. Data
from a sample set of cartridges from a diverse set of industries that
contained 180 MB of data, when written in 3480 standard format, was
recorded on an IBM 3490E tape drive and on a 3590 High Performance
Cartridge Tape on a 3590 Tape Drive. When recorded on a 3490E, the
average capacity of a standard cartridge increased 4.8 times over the
3480 and with the Enhanced Capacity Cartridge the increase was 9.6 times.
The 3590 High Performance Cartridge Tape was able to hold 168 times more
data than the 3480 standard cartridge, or over 30 GB of data, which is a
3:1 increase over the uncompressed capacity of 10 GB. The 3590 Extended
High Performance Cartridge Tape will hold twice that data, or over 60 GB.
The 3590 cartridges have pre-written servo tracks. These tracks
enable the 3590 drive to accurately position the read/write head with
respect to the media while the tape is in motion. If these servo tracks
are damaged or removed (such as by Degausing), the cartridge is no longer
useable.
Other operating characteristics are:
Tape speed: 2 meters per second (79 inches per second)
Search/Rewind speed: 5 meters per second (198 inches per second)

The SCSI interface supports a maximum 2 MB block size.
The SCSI differential interface is a 2-byte wide Ultra SCSI interface.
When attaching to a 1-byte SCSI interface, such as the RS/6000 SCSI-2
Differential High-Performance Controller (#2420) a 1 byte to 2 byte
interposer is employed. The 3590 must be located physically at one end
of the bus when attached to a 1-byte SCSI interface. If multiple tape
drives are attached to a RS/6000 bus, only one of them must be at the end
of the bus.
Although multiple systems may be attached to a 3590 tape drive, the
systems cannot use the drive simultaneously. The 3590 can only be varied
online to one system at a time.
Only two AS/400 systems may be directly attached to the 3590, one to
each of the two 3590 SCSI ports.
The Model B1A is for installation in an Enterprise Tape Library 3494,
a 3590 Model A14 Frame, or a 3590 Model C12 or C14 Silo Compatible Frame.
Up to two drives can be installed in a 3494 Model L12 or L14. For SCSI
host attachment, up to six drives can be installed in a 3494 Model D12.
For attachment to ESCON or FICON channels, a 3590 Controller is required
and up to four drives can be installed in a 3494 Model D14. Refer to the
3494 sales manual for further information.
The Model A60 Controller allows attachment of the Model B1A to ESCON
or FICON channels, on ES/3090, ES/9000, S/390, or zSeries systems. Four
Model B1A drives can also be installed in a 3590 Model C12 or C14 Silo
Compatible Frame for attachment to a StorageTek ACS. SCSI cables for
attaching Model B1A drives in a Model C12 or C14 to a Model A60
Controller may be specified on the Model C12 or C14. Refer to the 3590
Model C12 or C14 sales manual for cable information. Feature #2003 must
be ordered on each new Model B1A drive that is to be installed in a Model
C12 or C14. Feature #2004 must be ordered on an existing Model B1A to
convert that drive in the field for installation in a C12 or C14.
Feature #2005 must be ordered to remove a Model B1A from a C12 or C14 for
reinstallation in a 3494 Tape Library. Feature #2006 must be ordered to
remove a Model B1A from a C12 or C14 for reinstallation in a 3590 A14
Frame.
The 3590 Tape Drives can utilize either the 3590 Extended High
Performance Cartridge Tape (Extended Length Cartridge) or the 3590 High
Performance Cartridge Tape (Standard Length Cartridge). The Extended
Length Cartridge has a native capacity that is twice the capacity of the
Standard Length Cartridge.
Many solutions require that all 3590 drives in the subsystem have the
Extended Media Support capability to optimize drive/media allocation. If
Extended Length Cartridges are used, IBM recommends updating all tape
drives, to allow flexibility to mount Extended Length Cartridges on any
tape drive. However, if Extended Length Cartridges are to be used only
on tape drives that are part of a defined subset, then all drives in that
subset must be updated. Some examples are:
ESCON or FICON attached tape drives in an individual Enterprise Tape
Library 3494 or StorageTek Automated Cartridge System (ACS)
3590 stand-alone drives in an MVS complex
All 3590 Tape Drive shipments on or after March 3, 2000, will have the
support for the Extended Length Cartridge. MES feature #5780 (Extended
Media Support - BXX) is also available to add this support feature to
existing 3590 Model B11 or B1A Tape Drives (B Models). MES feature #5781
(Extended Media Support - EXX) is also available to add this support
feature to existing 3590 Model E11 or E1A Tape Drives (E Models).
Feature #9780 (Extended Media Support) must be added to the IBM
TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library Base Frame 3494 Model L10, L12, L14,
or the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive Expansion Frame 3494 Model
D12, or D14 to provide the library manager support for any 3494 tape
library that will contain the new Extended Length Cartridges. If 3590
Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape is used in the Enterprise Tape
Library 3494, this feature must be on the Tape Drive Expansion Frame 3494
Model D12 or D14 containing the 3590 Tape Drives with Extended Media
Support, and also on the Tape Library Base Frame 3494 Model L10, L12, or
L14.
Feature #9780 (Extended Media Support) must be added to the 3590 Model
A14, C12, or C14 to provide the subsystem support for the new Extended
Length Cartridges. If 3590 Extended High Performance Cartridge Tape is
used in any 3590 Tape Drive installed in that 3590 Model A14, C12, or
C14, then this feature must be on that 3590 Model A14, C12, or C14 frame
also.
Unlabeled and uninitialized Extended Length Cartridges can be included
with the order of a new 3590 Model B11 or E11 Tape Drive (by specifying
feature #8140), Model C12 or C14 Silo Compatible Frame (by specifying
feature #8240), or 3494 tape library frame (by specifying feature #8610).
Labeled or initialized Extended Length Cartridges can be ordered using
machine type 3599 or purchased through Priority Fulfillment Services.
Refer to the Supplies information.
3590 B Model to E Model Tape Drive Conversions
When a 3590 B Model Tape Drive is converted to a 3590 E Model, feature
#5781 (Extended Media Support - EXX) must be included in the MES order
for that model conversion. This feature should not be included when
upgrading the 3590 B Model or E Model to a 3590 H Model.

For the latest details on support, please refer to:
The 3590 Model B1A can be attached to all DXX and later models of the
AS/400, except the X02 and P03 models using the AS/400's Magnetic Media
Subsystem Controller (feature #6501). Each feature #6501 can support up
to two tape drives. Tape and DASD cannot be attached to the same feature
#6501, and two AS/400 systems cannot be connected to the same SCSI path.
But, the 3590 has two SCSI ports, so each port can be connected to a
different AS/400 system and the 3590 can thus be shared between two
systems.
One SCSI cable feature and one AS/400 interposer (feature #9410 on the
3590) should be specified for each 3590 port attached to feature #6501 on
an AS/400 system. Although the 3590 drives and feature #6501 on the
AS/400 are both Fast and Wide SCSI interfaces, an interposer is needed to
connect the cables correctly. The maximum SCSI cable length is 25
meters. See the Special Feature Codes section and the Introduction and
Planning Guide (GA32-0329) for additional SCSI cable planning
information.
The 3590 Model B1A can also be attached to the AS/400 Magnetic Media
Controller (#6534), the PCI External Tape Controller (#2729), or the PCI
Ultra Magnetic Media Controller (#2749). The SCSI cable features on the
3590 Model B11 provide cables to attach to these AS/400 controllers and
the AS/400 interposer (feature #9410 on the 3590) is not required. PTFs
may be required to attach the 3590 with the Ultra SCSI interface to
AS/400 systems with #6534, #2729, or #2749 adapters. Refer to AS/400
INFO APARs pertaining to the 3590 for details on any required PTFs.

The fastest data rate is achieved by using the RS/6000 Gigabit Fibre
Channel Adapters for PCI Bus (#6227 or #6228), which supports a 100
MB/sec burst data rate when attached to a 3590 Tape Drive with the Fibre
Channel Attachment feature. The fastest SCSI data rate is achieved by
using the RS/6000 PCI Differential Ultra SCSI Adapter (#6207) which
supports a 40 MB/sec burst data rate when attached to a 3590 Tape Drive
with the Ultra SCSI attachment. The appropriate SCSI or Fibre Channel
cables must be selected. Refer to the cable information in the
