The IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library is part of a family of tape
library storage solutions designed for the large, unattended storage
requirements from today's midrange systems up to high-end open systems.
Each aspect of the subsystem is designed to optimize access to data and
reliability. The 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library is designed to connect
to host systems using any combination of Fibre Channel, Ultra2/Wide Low
Voltage Differential (LVD) SCSI, or Ultra/Wide High Voltage Differential
(HVD) SCSI interfaces.
Model Abstract 3584-D42
(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of April 25, 2003)
The IBM 3584 Model D42 expansion frames may be added to the base frame
(Model L32) in order to add storage and/or drive capacity. Up to five
D42 expansion frames may be added to each base frame. Each 3584 Model
D42 frame supports up to 360 DLTtape IV storage slots and up to twelve
DLT 8000 drives, with incremental reduction of storage slots for each set
of four of drives installed. A 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library with five
D42 frames has a capacity of up to 1784 DLTtape slots and 229 LTO Ultrium
slots, resulting in a maximum native data capacity of 22.9 TB on LTO
Ultrium media and 71.4 TB on DLTtape. Each Model D42 frame can have up
to 6 logical libraries and 6 control.
The IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library is part of IBM's family of
tape library storage solutions designed for the large, unattended storage
requirements from today's mid-range systems up to high-end open systems.
Each aspect of the subsystem is designed to optimize access to data and
reliability. The 3584 library Models L32 and D32 can be equipped with
IBM LTO Ultrium tape drives and Model D42 can be equipped with DLT 8000
tape drives. IBM LTO Ultrium tape drives are compact storage devices
that support the highly intensive read and write operations required by
today's open system servers. Quantum DLT 8000 drives are high
performance storage devices supporting the DLTtape form.
The 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library provides an excellent network data
backup/archive solution. With the granularity and scalability to follow
your requirements from a few servers to hundreds of clients, from
gigabytes to terabytes, this powerful pairing will grow with you,
protecting your investment.
3584 UltraScalable Library Means High Performance
Industry-leading IBM LTO Ultrium drives can be installed in 3584
UltraScalable Tape Library Models L32 and D32. DLT 8000 drives can be
installed in Model D42. To support high performance in a mixed media
environment, Models D32 and L32 can be intermixed within a 3584 library,
and Model L32 supports attachment of Models D32 or D42. Input/Output
stations are located on the Model L32 to facilitate tape loading and
unloading. Cartridge move time within the 3584 UltraScalable Tape
Library is typically less than 3.0 seconds in a single-frame library.
Improved Connectivity
The 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library is designed to connect to host
systems using any combination of Fibre Channel and SCSI interfaces.
Customers who wish to use Fibre Channel should choose drive feature
#1456. Customers with systems using a Ultra2/Wide Low Voltage
Differential (LVD) SCSI interface should choose drive feature #1454.
Customers with systems using an Ultra/Wide High Voltage Differential
(HVD) interface should choose drive feature #1455.
The 3584 library supports connectivity to host systems and servers
utilizing Fibre Channel adapters. Connection distances up to 500 meters
are possible, and by utilizing the IBM 2103 SAN Fibre Channel Storage
Hub, or the IBM 2109 SAN Fibre Channel Switch, or the IBM 3534 SAN Fibre
Channel Managed Hub, distances exceeding 500 meters are possible.
High Reliability
DLTtape cartridges are designed for reliability. The shock resistant
cartridge is designed for repeated handling. The DLTtape media is rated
at over 1,000,000 passes without degradation, and archival life is rated
at 30 years.
The 3584 drives and library robotics are TapeAlert-compatible,
providing tape drive and library error and diagnostic reporting. Drive
cleaning is an automatic function performed by the library when required
by the drive, without requiring operator intervention.
High Granularity in Library Configurations
Features and capacities are designed to match the wide variety of
customer requirements.
Designed for Availability
Customers looking for maximum availability with minimum downtime for
service-related activities will appreciate the capability for replacing
drives and power supplies without having to re-IPL the host systems.
Fibre Channel drives require only a quiesce of the individual drive,
SCSI-attached drives and control ports require a quiesce of the affected
bus.
Model D42 (Expansion Frame)
Five expansion frames, Model D42 may be added to the base frame Model
L32 to add storage and/or drive capacity. Each 3584 Model D42 frame
supports up to 360 storage slots and up to twelve DLT 8000 drives, with
incremental reduction of storage slots for each set of four of drives
installed. A fully configured 3584 library with one Model L32 frame and
five Model D42 frames will support up to 12 LTO Ultrium drives and 60 DLT
8000 drives. Each Model D42 frame can have up to 6 logical libraries and
6 control paths.
Multi-Path Support for Heterogeneous Server Platforms With Up to
Seventy-two Logical Libraries
The Multi-Path feature of the 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library allows
the library to be shared by multiple heterogeneous servers sharing the
library. This is accomplished by partitioning the library into multiple
logical libraries, up to the number of control ports installed. Each
logical library has its own separate and distinct drive(s), storage
slots, and control path(s). I/O slots are shared on a
first-come-first-served basis. This type of partitioning allows
heterogeneous applications to share the library independent of each
other. Cartridges under library control are not shared between logical
libraries, nor allowed to be moved between logical libraries. An example
of heterogeneous sharing is a Microsoft Windows NT application using the
drive and storage slots of one logical library while a UNIX application
uses the drive and slots of another logical library. Logical libraries
can also be used for scalable application performance, such as up to
seventy-two Tivoli Storage Manager servers or 3466 Network Storage
Managers.
Note: Compression technology can increase the amount of data stored on
the media. Data characteristics impact the actual degree of compression.
Values listed represent compression ratios of 2:1.

Model Conversions
D42 to D32
When converting the last Model D42 library to a Model D32 library
within a libary, RPQ 8B3246 is required for the Model L32 library. RPQ
8B3246 replaces the LTO/DLT gripper assembly in the Model L32 with a dual
gripper assembly capable of handling LTO cartridges. The RPQ also
removes the 18-cartridge DLT I/O station in the Model L32 and replaces it
with a 20-cartridge LTO I/O station.
The IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library is a high-performance,
reliable, scalable tape library subsystem, designed for tape automation.
The 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library with features 1458 and 1458 works
with Sun, Hewlett-Packard, iSeries servers, xSeries servers, pSeries
servers, RS/6000, AS/400 Netfinity, and other open systems using
Fast/Wide LVD or HVD SCSI attachment.
The libraries use the DLT 8000 tape drives for fast data transfer and
certainty in automated library service. Each aspect of the library
subsystem has been optimized for repeated, dependable unattended tape
handling. The dual-gripper accessor solidly moves cartridges within the
library and the DLT 8000 tape drives. The drives have been established
in the industry with sales over 1.5 million drives.
Tape capacity of the DLTtape IV cartridge is 40 GB per cartridge in
native format, and using (2:1) compression is 80 GB. The DLT 8000 drives
have sustained data rates of 6 MB/sec. native and 12 MB/second at 2:1
compression. The DLT 8000 drive has a burst rate up to 20 MB/second.
Average file access is 60 seconds.
Cartridge capacity of the Model D42 is 324 to 360 cartridges with
incremental reduction of capacity with each set of 4 drives. Data
capacity is 11.4 to 13 TB in native mode and 22.8 to 26 TB in compressed
(2:1) mode. The Model D42 supports plant or field installation of up to
twelve DLT 8000 tape drives, in any combination of LVD or HVD drives.
The aggregate sustained data rate with one IBM LTO Ultrium drive is 43.2
MB/hour with 2:1 compression and with twelve drives is 518 MB/hour with
2:1 compression. Data rates depend on data structure, operating system,
system hardware, and the ability of the application to maintain this
throughput.
The IBM 3584 Model D42 attaches to a server using a Fast/Wide LVD or
HVD SCSI adapter. Each Model D42 can be configured to have up to 6
control paths and up to 6 logical libraries. The library contains the
electronics and logic for autochanger operations. Each DLT 8000 tape
drive contains the electronics and logic for reading and writing data,
control of the tape drive, management of the data buffer, and error
recovery procedures. The IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library has its own
power and cooling components.
Note: The 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library does not support installation
of Digital Linear Tape drives purchased from other vendors. Features
#1458 and #1459 consist of Quantum DLT 8000 drives modified and mounted
within a canister designed for mounting within the library.
Note: Device driver support for the Digital Linear Tape drive is provided
by native operating system device drivers.
Note: Values shown are for a library with twelve IBM LTO Ultrium tape
drives installed.

Although the compression technology can increase the amount of data
stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly
sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.
Total LVD SCSI cable length is limited to 25 m (81 ft) using
point-to-point interconnection (e.g. one host connected to only one tape
drive). Total LVD SCSI cable length is 12 m (39 ft) using multi-drop
interconnection (e.g. one host connected to more than one tape drive on
the same SCSI bus). Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.1 m
(0.33 ft).
Total HVD SCSI cable lengths are limited to 25 m (81 ft.) using
point-to-point or multi-drop interconnection. Stub length at each device
must not exceed 0.2 m (0.66 ft).
For performance reasons, the AS/400 configurator limits the attachment
to one device per adapter (IOP/IOA). Installing more than one IBM LTO
Ultrium Tape Drive (features #1454 or #1455) on an IOP/IOA may have an
impact on tape performance.
Installing more than one IBM LTO Ultrium drive on a SCSI bus may
impact system performance. Intermixing of other SCSI devices on the same
SCSI bus as the 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library may impact performance of
those devices.
Each IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library can be divided into logical
libraries (up to the number of Library Control Port features.
Each logical library must contain at least one DLT 8000 drive and one
Library Control Port feature.
The IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library, Model D42, can be attached to
the Sun, Hewlett-Packard, iSeries, pSeries, xSeries, AS/400(TM),
RS/6000(TM), Netfinity, and non-IBM servers, workstations, and open
systems that support Fast/Wide LVD or HVD SCSI interface specifications.
(see detailed support information below).
One feature #9002 (First Expansion Frame Attachment) or #9003
(Additional Expansion Frame Attachment) must be added to the 3584 Model
L32 for each Model D32 or D42 frame that is attached. This assures the
proper cables are shipped and configuration records are correct.
The capacity of the Model L32 can be expanded by enabling an
additional four columns in that frame with the addition of the Capacity
Expansion features 1603 (Field) or 1653 (Plant). One of these features
(1603 or 1653) is also required to enable the use of drives and storage
elements in the optional Model D32 and D42 Expansion Frames.
The 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library, Model D42, contains a maximum of
12 DLT 8000 Tape Drives per frame (total of 72 tape drives), each with a
Fast/Wide LVD or HVD SCSI interface. The IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Drive with
the desired interface is chosen by selecting at least one of the
following features:
1458 - DLT 8000 Drive Canister - which includes one DLT 8000 Tape
Drive with the Fast/Wide SCSI Low Voltage Differential (LVD) interface
1459 - DLT 8000 Drive Canister - which includes one DLT 8000 Tape
Drive with the Fast/Wide SCSI High Voltage Differential (HVD) interface
If features 1458 or 1459 are not ordered on a Model D42 then the
following feature must be specified on that Model D42:
9001 - Driveless Frame
A terminator is included with each #1458 and #1459 tape drive. SCSI
cables and appropriate interposers, as required, should be ordered for
attachment to a server. Refer to the Cables section for
detailed descriptions of SCSI cable features. A power cord feature
number, if applicable, should also be specified.
The 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library has Raven Black covers.

Capacity & Frame Features
Each Model D42 Expansion Frame has one control port installed during
manufacturing. The control port type is determined by the types of
drives ordered with the frame, using the following logic:
If LVD (feature 1458) or HVD (feature 1459) drives are ordered,
control port matches the drive SCSI interface
If LVD and HVD drives are ordered, control port provided is HVD SCSI
and the customer is responsible for ordering LVD control ports, as
desired, using feature #1605.
If no drives are ordered, no control port is included.
