Description

The Models H13 and L13 of the 3581 offer Ultrium tape products for customers who desire to manage their own service activities, have redundant tape devices or non-critical applications, and would benefit from a three-year element exchange warranty versus a one-year IBM CE-assisted warranty. The extended warranty models will be supported via the Customer Element Exchange process versus the IBM onsite service provided with the current models. The extended warranty is a parts-only warranty, compared to the current parts and labor warranty as implemented with IBM on-site service. Refer to the Warranty information for the details of the Customer Element Exchange process and customer responsibilities.

3581 Models H13 and L13 Ultrium Tape Autoloader

The 3581 is a stand-alone or rack-mounted tape autoloader with a sustained data transfer rate of up to 15 MB per second uncompressed, up to 30 MB with 2:1 compression, depending on the characteristics of the data transferred. The 3581 features data compression hardware that provides an effective capacity of up to 200 GB per cartridge. The 3581 provides a cost-effective solution for save/restore and archiving functions. The number of cartridges is up to seven for a total data capacity of 700 GB native mode, 1.4 TB with 2:1 compression.

The 3581 is server-sized, allowing convenient placement on top of a system server, or two units mounted side-by-side in only 5U of 19-inch rack space. The IBM 3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader is designed for easy, unattended operation. The 3581 can be operated in sequential or random-access modes. In sequential mode, the 3581 manages cartridge access. In random-access mode, the 3581 relies on application software for cartridge management.

The two 3581 models differ in the interface they provide. Model H13 is equipped with a High-Voltage Differential (HVD) Ultra SCSI interface, and Model L13 is equipped with a Low-Voltage Differential (LVD) Ultra2 SCSI interface. Each model appears as two drives on the SCSI bus. Indicators on the operator's panel provide status on power, autoloader and drive activity, error status, and message information. Controls provide display, mode, and power controls.

Although the 3581 provides the capability for high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. Also, although the compression technology used in the tape drive can typically double the amount of data that can be stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

Product Positioning

3580 and 3581 Models H13 and L13

The H13 and L13 models of the 3580 and 3580 offer customers who desire to manage their own service activities, have redundant tape devices or non-critical applications, and would benefit from a three-year warranty versus a one-year warranty. The extended warranty models will be supported via the Customer Element Exchange process versus the IBM onsite service provided with the current models. The extended warranty is a parts-only warranty, compared to the current parts and labor warranty as implemented with IBM on-site service. Refer to the warranty section of the RFA for the details of the Customer Element Exchange process and customer responsibilities.

Customers who prefer IBM on-site support, have mission critical applications, or non-redundant tape devices may want to consider the current models H11 and L11 of the 3580 or the models H17 and L17 of the 3581.

3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader Models H13 and L13

The IBM 3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader is a high-performance, reliable, autoloader tape subsystem. Designed for unattended operation, the IBM 3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader can be attached to AS/400 RS/6000, RS/6000 SP, Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, Linux, Netfinity, and other open systems using SCSI attachment. The libraries use the IBM Ultrium tape drives for faster data transfer and reliability in automated library service. Each aspect of the library 3581 Tape Autoloader has been optimized for repeated, reliable, unattended tape handling. IBM Ultrium tape cartridges have been refined using the many years of IBM tape experience to provide a tape cartridge that provides extremely fast data transfer, but stands up to the rigors of automated handling.

Tape capacity is 100 GB per cartridge in native format, and using (2:1) compression is 200 GB. The Ultrium drives have sustained data rates of 15 MB/sec. at 2:1 compression.

The 3581 Tape Autoloader accommodates seven cartridges and has an aggregate sustained data throughput of 108 GB/hour with 2:1 compression. Data rates depend on data structure, operating system, system hardware, and the ability of the application to maintain this throughput.

The IBM 3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader attaches to a server using a SCSI adapter. The library control unit contains the electronics and logic for autochanger operations. Each IBM Ultrium tape drive contains the electronics and logic for reading and writing data, control of the tape drive, management of the data buffer, and error recovery procedures. The IBM 3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader has its own power and cooling components.

Limitations

3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader Models H13 and L13

Total LVD SCSI cable length is limited to 25 m (81 ft) using point-to-point interconnection. Total LVD SCSI cable length is 12 m (39 ft) using multi-drop interconnection. Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.1 m (0.33 ft).

Total HVD SCSI cable lengths are limited to 25 m (81 ft.) using point-to-point (that is, one host connected to only one tape drive) or multi-drop interconnection (that is, one host connected to more than one tape drive on the same SCSI bus). Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.2 m (0.66 ft).

Although the compression technology can increase the amount of data stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

For performance reasons, the iSeries and AS/400 configurator limits the attachment to one device per adapter (IOP/IOA). Installing more than one IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Autoloader on an IOP/IOA may have an impact on tape performance.

Installing more than one Tape Autoloader on a SCSI bus may impact system performance. Intermixing of other SCSI devices on the same SCSI bus as the 3581 Tape Autoloader may impact performance of those devices.

The 3581 Tape Autoloader operating environment must not conflict with media operating and storage requirements. If media is stored in the 3581 Tape Autoloader for more than 10 hours, the media storage temperature requirements must be met.
