Description

The IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive, a stand-alone, Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI)-attached, LTO Ultrium tape drive, attaches to AS/400, RS/6000, Netfinity, RS/6000 SP, UNIX and PC servers, and supports OS/400, AIX, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, Windows 2000, and Windows NT open systems. It provides a media capacity of up to 100 GB (200 GB with 2:1 compression) data storage per cartridge and a sustained data rate of up to 15 MB per second (uncompressed).

With support for Ultrium tape data cartridges, the 3580 Tape Drive provides an excellent migration path from digital linear tape (DLT), 1/4-inch, 4-mm, or 8-mm tape drives. The first in a family of IBM Ultrium tape solutions, it is a cost-effective solution for save-and-restore and archiving functions.

The IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive is a 100 GB external Ultrium tape drive with a sustained data transfer rate of up to 15 MB per second (uncompressed). It features data compression hardware which provides an effective capacity of up to 200 GB and an effective transfer rate of up to 30 MB per second, depending on the characteristics of the data transferred. The 3580 provides a cost-effective solution for save/restore and archiving functions.

Note: Although the 3580 Tape Drive provides the capability for high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. Also, although the compression technology used in the tape drive can typically double the amount of data that can be stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

The Models H13 and L13 of the 3580 offer Ultrium tape products for customers who desire to manage their own service activities, have redundant tape devices or non-critical applications, and would benefit from a three-year element exchange warranty versus a one-year IBM CE-assisted warranty. The extended warranty models will be supported via the Customer Element Exchange process versus the IBM onsite service provided with the current models. The extended warranty is a parts-only warranty, compared to the current parts and labor warranty as implemented with IBM on-site service.

Product Positioning

The IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive is an excellent solution for customers who use tape or require a larger-capacity or higher-performance tape backup. It can be an alternative product to other externally attached DLT, 1/4-inch, 4-mm or 8-mm tape devices for RS/6000, AS/400, RS/6000 SP, Netfinity, and other open systems workstations and servers.

With its higher capacity and performance it is an excellent replacement for IBM DLT models (7205), 1/4-inch models (7207) 4-mm models (7206), or 8-mm models (7208) and other competitive products where this capability is needed.

For capacity requirements beyond one IBM Ultrium drive and one IBM Ultrium 100 GB (native) tape cartridge, consider other products in the IBM Ultrium family including the IBM 3581 Ultrium Tape Autoloader, the IBM 3583 Ultrium Scalable Tape Library, and the IBM 3584 UltraScalable Tape Library.

For mission-critical data protection, optimized for enterprise multi-mode and server attachment, and read and write intensive applications, consider the proven IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem.

For fast access and multiple retrieve storage applications, consider the IBM Magstar MP 3570 Tape Subsystem.

The IBM 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive is an external, stand-alone, SCSI-attached, Ultrium tape drive that attaches to AS/400, RS/6000, Netfinity, and other Unix and PC servers supporting Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft Windows 2000, IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, HP-UX other open workstations and servers. It provides a media capacity of up to 100 GB (200 GB with 2:1 compression) data storage per cartridge and a sustained data rate of up to 15 MB per second (uncompressed).

In addition to reading and writing on Ultrium tape data cartridges, the 3580 Tape Drive provides an excellent migration path from DLT, 1/4-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives. It is a very cost-effective solution for save-and-restore and archiving functions and the first in a family of IBM Ultrium tape solutions.

Physical Specifications

  • Height: 14.6 cm (5.75 in)
  • Width: 17.1 cm (6.74 in)
  • Depth: 33.3 cm (13.1 in)
  • Maximum Weight: 6.6 kg (14.3 lbs)

Operating Environment

  • Temperature: 10 to 38 degrees C (50 to 100 degrees F)

  • Relative Humidity: 20 to 80 (percent)

  • Wet Bulb: 26 degrees C (78.8 degrees F) maximum

  • Voltage: 100-240 V AC, 50-60 Hz auto-ranging

  • Electrical Power:
    • 1.0 amps at 100 V AC, 0.5 amps at 240 V AC
    • 0.120 KVA

  • Maximum Noise Level: 55 dBa

  • Heat Output: 94 watts (81 calories/hour)

Limitations

Total LVD SCSI cable length is limited to 25 m (81 ft) using point-to-point interconnection. Total LVD SCSI cable length is 12 m (39 ft) using multi-drop interconnection. Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.1 m (0.33 ft).

Total HVD SCSI cable lengths are limited to 25 m (81 ft.) using point-to-point (that is, one host connected to only one tape drive) or multi-drop interconnection (that is, one host connected to more than one tape drive on the same SCSI bus). Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.2 m (0.66 ft).

Although the compression technology can increase the amount of data stored on the media, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data being compressed.

For performance reasons, the AS/400 configurator limits the attachment to one device per adapter (IOP/IOA). Installing more than one IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Drive on an IOP/IOA may have an impact on tape performance.

Installing more than one Ultrium drive on a SCSI bus may impact system performance. Intermixing of other SCSI devices on the same SCSI bus as the 3580 Tape Drive may impact performance of those devices.

Hardware Requirements

The 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive Model H11/H13 features an Ultra/Wide SCSI High Voltage Differential (HVD) interface. The 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive Model L11/L13 features an Ultra2/Wide SCSI Low Voltage Differential (LVD) interface. The 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive can be attached to the IBM AS/400, IBM RS/6000, IBM RS/6000 SP systems, Netfinity, and non-IBM servers, workstations, and personal computers that support Ultra/Wide SCSI HVD interface specifications and Ultra2/Wide SCSI LVD interface specifications.

SCSI cables and appropriate interposers, as required, should be ordered for attachment to a server. A power cord feature number, if applicable, should also be specified.

The 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive has raven black covers.

The 0.3 meter cable has male Mini-68 pin VHDCI connector on one end and a female 68-pin HD68 connector on the other. This feature requires a SCSI cable to connect the device with the VHDCI Cable/Interposer. Features #5301, #5302, #5305, or #5310 can be used.

To minimize cabling errors, it is recommended that server adapters with VHDCI connectors use a cable such as features #5602, #5604, #5610, #5620, and #5625 which eliminates the need for feature 5099.

  • Feature type: Chargeable
  • Required feature: No
  • Maximum number of features: None
  • Installation: Plant or Field
