The IBM 3494 TotalStorage (TM) Enterprise Automated Tape Library is a
tape cartridge library designed to provide high availability of customer
data in both S/390 and Open Systems environments. Its affordable,
modular design helps allow the 3494 to grow as your business grows.
Flexible configuration choices start at a single frame with up to two
tape drives and up to 240 tape cartridges. Optional drive, storage, and
Virtual Tape Server units may be added as needed, to create an automated
tape library with up to 76 physical tape drives, 512 virtual tape drives,
or up to 6,240 tape cartridges. Choices in tape drives for the 3494 can
be the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592, the IBM TotalStorage
Enterprise Tape Drive 3590, or the IBM 3490E. Different tape drives can
be installed in different frames in the same 3494 library. The 3494
supports a variety of IBM and Open Systems hosts including IBM eServer
zSeries, S/390*, IBM eServer pSeries, RS/6000*, IBM eServer iSeries,
AS/400*, Sun**, HP, and Intel-compatible servers running Microsoft
Windows** NT, 2000, and 2003. Also available are unique optional models
such as the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise High Availability Tape Frames
(HA1 Frames) and the IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server (VTS). The HA1
Frames provide a second tape cartridge accessory and library manager for
high library availability and performance. The VTS is designed to
combine the speed of disk, the advantages of virtual tape drives, the
capacity and reliability of IBM 3590 tape technology, and the automation
of the 3494 to create a self-contained hierarchical storage management
subsystem. All this, in addition to remote console support, Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) reporting capabilities, multi-host
attachment, and modular design, assist in making the 3494 flexible, easy
to use, and well-suited for automated tape library solutions.
Model Abstract 3494-S10
The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Storage Frame Model S10 for the
Enterprise Tape Library 3494 expands the 3494's tape cartridge storage
capability. The Model S10 consists of 400 tape cartridge storage cells
and no tape drives.
The Tape Storage Frame Model S10 must be attached to an IBM
TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library Base Frame Model L10, L12, or L14.
Modular, expandable, automated tape libraries with a low entry price
providing an automated tape solution to a variety of system environments
and capacities
Provides a solution for automating tape operations such as
save/restore, migration of data between direct access storage devices
(DASD) and tape, and other mass data applications
The Enterprise Tape Library 3494 is a cost-effective, highly reliable,
and space-efficient tape automation solution for a variety of user
environments. The 3494 can be shared across multiple host systems such
as S/390, AS/400, RS/6000, and others. It is a modular system that
contains a cartridge accessor, a library manager, and storage cells for
tape cartridges. The 3494 supports the IBM 3490E Model C1A, C2A, and F1A
Tape Drives, the Magstar 3590 Model B1A and E1A Tape Drives the Magstar
3590 Model A00, A50, and A60 Controllers, and can include the Model B16
VTS. A Model B10, B18, or B20 VTS can be externally attached to the
3494. The VTSs are cost/performance solutions to provide attached host
systems a hierarchical storage management system and exploit the capacity
and performance of attached Magstar 3590 Tape Drives. The Model HA1
Frames provide a second accessor and library manager for high
availability and improved performance. The 3494 provides a cost-
effective solution for automating tape operations such as save/restore,
migration of data between disk and tape, and other mass data
applications. Cost savings result from high performance and reduced
requirements in tape drives, cartridges, floor space, power, and
personnel.
Model Description 3494-S10
The Tape Storage Frame Model S10 is a single frame that contains
storage cells for 400 tape cartridges.
System Management
The Model S10 is part of a tape automation solution to satisfy a wide
range of system management requirements. Benefits include: improved
accuracy/security in tape handling, automated data migration/management,
potential for reducing DASD growth, enables new applications, reduces
access time to data, reduces or may eliminate operator labor and the
potential for floor space reduction. These benefits should result in
increased system availability, improved system reliability, and reduced
overall system management cost.
Business Solutions
The Model S10 is part of a solution that significantly reduces tape
handling, resulting in reduced operations cost and improved data accuracy
and security. Automated save/restore and data migration reduces access
time to data and increases system utilization.
Up to fifteen Model S10s can be attached to a Model L10, L12, or L14.
Configurations of 1 to 16 frames are allowed when the 3494
configuration does not contain a Model HA1. When
Model HA1 Frames are attached, configurations of 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and
16 frames are allowed (not counting the two service bay frames).
The Tape Storage Frame Model S10 must be attached to a Tape Library
Base Frame Model L10, L12, or L14. One feature #9002 must be applied to
the Model L10, L12, or L14 for each Model S10 that is attached in the
first eight frames. One feature #9004 must be applied to the Model L10,
L12, or L14 and also each Model S10 that is attached in 3494s with
greater than eight frames. This is required to assure that proper cables
are shipped and configuration records are correct.
If the configuration of frames in an installed 3494 needs to be
changed, for example if frames must be moved to install a VTS, or if
frames must be moved from one 3494 to another, then an RPQ request must
be processed before the library can be reconfigured. An RPQ is required
for moving feature numbers 5300, 5302, 5304, and 5400, or Models B16 VTS,
D10, D12, D14, and S10 which will ensure that the proper cables are
available.
No publications are shipped with the product. Publications are
shipped with the Models L10, L12, and L14.

#9109 Attached to ES/3090, ES/9000, S/390, or zSeries system
(#9004) Storage Unit Attachment Greater Than 8 Frames
This feature notifies the plant of control that this Storage Unit is
attached to the Model L1x in a position greater than the first eight
frames of the 3494. This feature is required to assure that the proper
cables for connection to the Model L1x are shipped and the configuration
records are correct. This feature code is required on the Model S10 and
the associated Model L1x for new orders and string reconfigurations.
An RPQ must be
processed prior to any 3494 frame reconfiguration to ensure that the
proper cables are available for that reconfiguration and future
changes/enhancements and to update plant records.
Maximum: Eight.
