Abstract

The IBM 3494 TotalStorage (TM) Enterprise Automated Tape Library is a tape cartridge library designed to provide high availability of customer data in both S/390 and Open Systems environments. Its affordable, modular design helps allow the 3494 to grow as your business grows. Flexible configuration choices start at a single frame with up to two tape drives and up to 240 tape cartridges. Optional drive, storage, and Virtual Tape Server units may be added as needed, to create an automated tape library with up to 76 physical tape drives, 512 virtual tape drives, or up to 6,240 tape cartridges. Choices in tape drives for the 3494 can be the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592, the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590, or the IBM 3490E. Different tape drives can be installed in different frames in the same 3494 library. The 3494 supports a variety of IBM and Open Systems hosts including IBM eServer zSeries, S/390*, IBM eServer pSeries, RS/6000*, IBM eServer iSeries, AS/400*, Sun**, HP, and Intel-compatible servers running Microsoft Windows** NT, 2000, and 2003. Also available are unique optional models such as the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise High Availability Tape Frames (HA1 Frames) and the IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server (VTS). The HA1 Frames provide a second tape cartridge accessory and library manager for high library availability and performance. The VTS is designed to combine the speed of disk, the advantages of virtual tape drives, the capacity and reliability of IBM 3590 tape technology, and the automation of the 3494 to create a self-contained hierarchical storage management subsystem. All this, in addition to remote console support, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) reporting capabilities, multi-host attachment, and modular design, assist in making the 3494 flexible, easy to use, and well-suited for automated tape library solutions.

Model Abstract 3494-HA1

The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise High Availability Tape Frames Model HA1 for the Enterprise Tape Library 3494 includes a second library manager and accessor, two service bays and required hardware and are designed for concurrent maintenance. The Model HA1 operates in stand-by mode to provide a redundant library manager and accessor or improved availability. With the Dual Active Accessor (DAA) feature active on the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Library Base Frame Model L10, L12, or L14, both accessors can operate simultaneously to increase mount performance of the library. With two library managers and dual accessors, and each containing two disk drives for duplication of the library databases, maintenance can now be performed in most situations on the failing library control unit component while the 3494 is still available for customer production. The Model HA1 Frames contain no storage cells for tape cartridges.

Description

The Enterprise Tape Library 3494 now provides the highest level of availability with the addition of the IBM TotalStorage High Availability Tape Frames Model HA1. The Model HA1 Frames consist of two service bay frames with one added at each end of a configuration to provide accessor service area and parking area. A second library manager, in the same service bay as the second accessor, is added to the subsystem to improve library availability in the event of a library manager failure. A second hard drive is required in both library managers for duplication of library database information. The dual library manager design is based on the 3495 implementation. It also adds a second accessor so the library can automatically continue operations in the event of an accessor failure. One accessor will be active at a time, the second is available as a hot standby. With the addition of the Dual Active Accessor (DAA) feature on the Models L10, L12, and L14, both accessors can be working at the same time. The DAA feature is designed to increase the mount performance of the library while still providing high availability and high reliability of the Model HA1 Frames. The actual performance of the 3494 is determined by a number of factors, such as: accessor capacity, number of library frames, number of tape drives, location of tape drives and tape cartridges, and tape cartridge residency. When an accessor requires servicing, either accessor can push the other into its service bay and then take control for the entire library. Concurrent maintenance on an accessor is supported. The library can continue to function as a failed accessor is being serviced. This also minimizes library down time when library manager code is being installed. A new library manager PC will be included to enhance performance.

Enterprise Tape Library configurations of 1 to 16 frames are allowed when the 3494 configuration does not contain a Model HA1. When Model HA1 Frames are attached, configurations of 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 16 frames are allowed in addition to the two service bays of the Model HA1 Frames. There must be a minimum of 4 library frames if the DAA feature is installed. The Model B16 VTS can be installed anywhere within the 16 frames. The IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive Expansion Frames (Models D10, D12 and D14) and the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Storage Frames (Model S10) can also be installed in any location in the 3494. Remote console support using Distributed Console Access Facility (DCAF) for both library managers is also available. No additional host software changes are needed to support the Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem (DFSMS) and Basic Tape Library Support (BTLS) MVS environments or to TPF, Virtual Machine/Enterprise Systems Architecture (VM/ESA), and VSE/ESA guests of VM/ESA.

Hardware Requirements

The Model HA1 Frames consist of two service bays, with one installed at each end of the Enterprise Tape Library. When the Model HA1 Frames are attached to the 3494, the configurations are limited to 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, or 16 frames not including the service bays. These frames can consist of a library control unit frame and one Virtual Tape Server frame and any combination of drive unit or storage unit frames.

Feature number 9040 must be added to the Model L10, L12, or L14 Tape Library Base Frame when the Model HA1 Frames are attached. This is to assure that the proper cables and other components are shipped and that configuration records are correct. If feature numbers 5219 (Token Ring Adapter), 5220 (Ethernet Adapter), 5229 (Expansion Attachment Card), 5227 (32 Port Attachment), or 5215 (Dual Gripper) are installed on the Model L10, L12, or L14, then these same features must be also installed on the Model HA1. When feature number 9040 is installed on the Model L10, L12, or L14, feature number 5228 is not required on that model. To enable both accessors to operate simultaneously, the Dual Active Accessor (DAA) feature number 5050 must be specified on the Model L10, L12, or L14 Tape Library Base Frame.

If the 3494 is attached to a host SCSI or LAN, then feature number 9041 must be installed on all frames of the 3494 when the Model HA1 Frames are attached.

If a 3494 Model B10 or B20 VTS, or a Model B18 VTS with feature #5264 (64 Additional Virtual Drives), is attached to the 3494 Tape Library Base Frame (and Model HA1), then feature #9021 (Virtual Drives Enhancement) must be installed on both the Model HA1 Frames and the Model L10, L12, or L14.

Software Requirements

Operating environments that perform library control on the OEMI (parallel), ESCON, or FICTON channel (MVS/ESA, VM/ESA, VSE/ESA running under VM/ESA, and TPF) require no additional software.

Operating environments that use direct-attach (LAN or RS232) library control (AS/400, RS/6000, Sun, HP, and native VSE/ESA) require the Open System Device Drivers feature (#9200) available on the Tape Library Base Frame Model L10, L12, or L14.
