Abstract

The IBM 3494 TotalStorage (TM) Enterprise Automated Tape Library is a tape cartridge library designed to provide high availability of customer data in both S/390 and Open Systems environments. Its affordable, modular design helps allow the 3494 to grow as your business grows. Flexible configuration choices start at a single frame with up to two tape drives and up to 240 tape cartridges. Optional drive, storage, and Virtual Tape Server units may be added as needed, to create an automated tape library with up to 76 physical tape drives, 512 virtual tape drives, or up to 6,240 tape cartridges. Choices in tape drives for the 3494 can be the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592, the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590, or the IBM 3490E. Different tape drives can be installed in different frames in the same 3494 library. The 3494 supports a variety of IBM and Open Systems hosts including IBM eServer zSeries, S/390*, IBM eServer pSeries, RS/6000*, IBM eServer iSeries, AS/400*, Sun**, HP, and Intel-compatible servers running Microsoft Windows** NT, 2000, and 2003. Also available are unique optional models such as the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise High Availability Tape Frames (HA1 Frames) and the IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server (VTS). The HA1 Frames provide a second tape cartridge accessory and library manager for high library availability and performance. The VTS is designed to combine the speed of disk, the advantages of virtual tape drives, the capacity and reliability of IBM 3590 tape technology, and the automation of the 3494 to create a self-contained hierarchical storage management subsystem. All this, in addition to remote console support, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) reporting capabilities, multi-host attachment, and modular design, assist in making the 3494 flexible, easy to use, and well-suited for automated tape library solutions.

Product Positioning

The Enterprise Tape Drive 3592 Model J1A is the follow-on to the highly successful Enterprise Tape Drive 3590. The Enterprise Tape Library 3494 with the 3592 Model J1A is supported in a wide range of environments including selected zSeries, S/390, iSeries, AS/400, pSeries, RS/6000, xSeries, Sun, and Hewlett Packard servers, as well as Intel-compatible servers running Linux and Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003. It offers significant performance and capacity benefits over the IBM 3590, and over other half-inch tape drives such as the IBM 3480, 3490, or 3490E.

The 3592 Model J1A is designed for high-performance computing environments where reliability, capacity, and performance are important. You should consider it in 3494 environments where:

  • Space allocated to tape cartridges needs to be reduced within automation solutions or offline storage

  • Backup windows are growing and there is a need for high-performance tape drives to back up larger amounts of data in less time

  • A Fibre Channel attached drive with native switched fabric capability is required

The Enterprise Tape Library 3494, with the 3592 Model J1A, should also be considered in other large scale tape environments, such as:

  • High-speed data save operations where backup windows are critical, and large amounts of data are archived to tape

  • Large-scale automated tape installations where performance, capacity, and reliability are needed

  • Large-scale mass data archive applications where massive amounts of data need to be quickly saved to tape for storage and later recall (examples include the seismic industry, data warehousing, and record management applications)

One feature #9005 must be applied to the Model L10, L12, L14, and L22 and also each Model D22 that is attached in 3494s with greater than eight frames. This is required to assure that proper cables are shipped and configuration records are correct.

If the configuration of frames in an installed 3494 needs to be changed, for example, if frames must be moved to install a VTS, or if frames must be moved from one 3494 to another, then an RPQ request must be processed before the library can be reconfigured. An RPQ is required for moving feature numbers 5300, 5302, 5304, and 5400, or Models B16 VTS, D10, D12, D14, D22, D24, and S10 which will ensure that the proper cables are available.

Increased open systems tape drives

Tape drives in each 3494 Model Dxx Frame can now connect to an Ethernet Attached Serial Hub (EASH) feature instead of by a serial cable back to the LM in the 3494 Base Frame Model Lxx. Each pair of EASH devices can support up to the maximum number of drives in the 3494 Tape Library Dxx Frame they reside in, and communicate via an Ethernet interface back to the LM in the 3494 Base Frame Model Lxx. A total of 96 open systems tape drives can communicate via the EASH interface. Combined with the 32 open systems tape drives that can communicate via the serial interfaces of the LM in the 3494 Model Lxx Frame, a total of 128 open systems tape drives may now be attached to a single 3494 Tape Library.

To attach the Tape Drives to the EASH, the following features must be installed:

  • On each 3494 Model Dxx or Lxx Frame with tape drives:

    • 5184 (Ethernet Attached Serial Hub) - one per frame on a 3494 Model D12, D22, L12, or L22, which provides two EASH devices in each frame for redundancy.

  • On each 3494 Model Lxx and HA1 Frame with an EASH anywhere in the library:

    • 9184 (EASH Enablement) - this must be on the Model L10, L12, L14, or L22, and on the Model HA1 if feature #5184 is installed in a Model Dxx or Lxx Frame, to enable an EASH connection on the LM.

    • 5232 (Attachment Concentrator) - provides the internal attachment to the LM.

    • 5246 (Dual Path Concentrator) - is also required for EASH attachment to provide a dual path to the drive helping eliminate a Single Point of Failure (SPOF) and Single Point of Repair (SPOR).

    • An LM that was shipped after May 15, 2000, or one of the following features on the Model Lxx:
      • 5047 or 9047 (LAN PCI Library Manager)
      • 5046 or 9046 (PCI Library Manager)
      • 9020 (Model B20, B10, or B18 VTS Attachment)

A pair of Ethernet cables is provided from the LM to each frame with EASH devices.
