Abstract

The IBM 3494 TotalStorage (TM) Enterprise Automated Tape Library is a tape cartridge library designed to provide high availability of customer data in both S/390 and Open Systems environments. Its affordable, modular design helps allow the 3494 to grow as your business grows. Flexible configuration choices start at a single frame with up to two tape drives and up to 240 tape cartridges. Optional drive, storage, and Virtual Tape Server units may be added as needed, to create an automated tape library with up to 76 physical tape drives, 512 virtual tape drives, or up to 6,240 tape cartridges. Choices in tape drives for the 3494 can be the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3592, the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Tape Drive 3590, or the IBM 3490E. Different tape drives can be installed in different frames in the same 3494 library. The 3494 supports a variety of IBM and Open Systems hosts including IBM eServer zSeries, S/390*, IBM eServer pSeries, RS/6000*, IBM eServer iSeries, AS/400*, Sun**, HP, and Intel-compatible servers running Microsoft Windows** NT, 2000, and 2003. Also available are unique optional models such as the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise High Availability Tape Frames (HA1 Frames) and the IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Server (VTS). The HA1 Frames provide a second tape cartridge accessory and library manager for high library availability and performance. The VTS is designed to combine the speed of disk, the advantages of virtual tape drives, the capacity and reliability of IBM 3590 tape technology, and the automation of the 3494 to create a self-contained hierarchical storage management subsystem. All this, in addition to remote console support, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) reporting capabilities, multi-host attachment, and modular design, assist in making the 3494 flexible, easy to use, and well-suited for automated tape library solutions.

Description

The IBM TotalStorage Virtual Tape Frame 3494 Model CX1 is one of the components of the IBM TotalStorage Peer-to-Peer Virtual Tape Server (PtP VTS). A PtP VTS uses robust distributed servers, Virtual Tape Controllers (VTCs) housed in the Virtual Tape Frame Model CX1, to interconnect two VTSs (Model B10, B18, or B20) into a single PtP VTS system for FICON or ESCON attachment to a host system. The VTS Models B10 and B20 can connect to ESCON or FICON channels, but the VTS Model B18 can only connect to ESCON channels. The Model CX1 provides the housing and power for two or four VTC features that interconnect two VTSs. There are two power control compartments, each with its own power cord to allow connection to two power sources.

PtP VTS

The VTS 3494 Models B10, B18, or B20 in an IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library 3494 can include Peer-to-Peer Copy features. These features allow two VTSs to be interconnected into a single system to form a PtP VTS, with no single point of failure that prevents access to data. Each of the VTSs in a PtP VTS continues to operate during scheduled or unscheduled service of the other VTS. The VTS Peer-to-Peer Copy features provide automatic copy of virtual volumes into both VTSs in a PtP VTS. When a volume is requested, the PtP VTS automatically retrieves one of the copies from either VTS. For even greater data protection, the VTSs in a PtP VTS can be in different locations to protect against disasters.

A VTS Model B10, B18, or B20 with the Peer-to-Peer Copy features is an independently operating distributed server node in a PtP VTS. It incorporates all the functional capability of the VTS Model B10, B18, or B20 without Peer-to-Peer Copy features, except for SCSI host attachment and the Import/Export capability of Advanced Function. The VTS incorporates new channel commands to support large block transfers of compressed logical volumes to and from the VTC. These commands reduce the time needed to copy logical volumes, especially across extended distances. Other functions allow the the VTC to maintain copy synchronization of the two VTSs and provide expedited deletion of redundant logical volume copies from the tape volume cache.

The PtP VTS enhances those capabilities by maintaining a copy of all virtual volumes in both VTSs of the PtP VTS. The VTCs will automatically create the second copy and maintain the copy synchronization of the two VTSs. The accessibility of the copy will depend on the mode of operation selected:

  • Immediate Copy - Creates a copy in the companion connected VTS upon receipt of a Rewind Unload command and provides the highest level of protection of your data in the VTS

  • Deferred Copy - Schedules creation of a copy in the companion connected VTS after receipt of a Rewind Unload command as activity permits

Each PtP VTS will consist of four or eight VTCs and two VTSs (Models B10, B18, or B20), with each having a minimum of 144 GB of disk storage capacity and four or more 3590 Tape Drives. A maximum of 10.2 TB (assuming 3:1 compression) of disk storage will be available for tape volume cache and up to 24 3590 Tape Drives will be available for copy or recall activity. It is highly recommended that both VTSs be configured with the same disk storage capacity. A PtP VTS will appear to attached host processors as a single automated tape library with:

  • Four or eight fully configured independent "3490E" tape subsystems with 16 or 32 tape drives each (64, 128, or 256 virtual tape drives total)

  • Up to 10.2 TB (with 3:1 compression) of disk storage

  • A maximum capacity of 250,000 logical volumes

PtP Configurations

The following 8 PtP configurations are supported:

  • B10 Peer-to-Peer:
    • 4 FICON VTCs
    • 4 ESCON VTCs
    • 2 FICON and 2 ESCON VTCs

  • B20 Peer-to-Peer:
    • 8 FICON VTCs
    • 8 ESCON VTCs
    • 4 FICON and 4 ESCON VTCs

  • B18 Peer-to-Peer:
    • 4 ESCON VTCs
    • 8 ESCON VTCs

Performance

The performance of the PtP VTS will depend on several factors, including customer data characteristics, the mode of copy operation selected, the number of VTCs, the channel type, the VTS features, and the distance between PtP VTS components. In the Deferred Copy mode, the scheduling of a volume copy will be determined by the Virtual Tape Controller and its execution will have a lower priority than host I/O operations and allow a higher peak period bandwidth. If Immediate Copy mode is selected, then the copy operation is performed during the unload processing of the volume and will have a higher priority than host I/O operations.

You can go beyond traditional ESCON performance levels and distances with FICON attachment. FICON PtP can provide aggregate peak data rates more than twice that of current ESCON PtP, resulting in significantly shorter job times. Furthermore, a single FICON VTC has a data bandwidth of up to six times that of an ESCON VTC, enabling the FICON VTC to better handle periodic VTC workload imbalances.

Remote Operation

The components of the PtP VTS can be physically separated to provide remote copy of virtual volumes. One of the VTSs with its companion 3494 would be in one location and the other VTS with its companion 3494 in another location. The required four or eight VTCs can be flexibly placed between the two locations.

ESCON directors, Fibre Channel Directors, or Dense Wave Divison Multiplexors (DWDM) can be used to extend the maximum distance between components as shown in the following table:

                               ESCON With
                      ESCON DWDM(1) FICON
                      ----- ---------- ------
Host Server to VTC 43 km 75 km 100 km
VTC to VTS 26 km 50 km 100 km

Note: (1) The maximum end-to-end distance of the host system to VTC ESCON interface, including the DWDM pair length, is 75 km. The maximum end-to-end distance of the VTC to VTS ESCON interface, including the DWDM pair length, is 50 km.

The VTS FICON attachments support 2-Gbps link speed when attached to a zSeries server, or an appropriate FICON/FC switch, with 2-Gbps FICON features and the appropriate levels of software to utilize the 2-Gbps capability. Extended distance connections can be provided by channel extenders (virtually unlimited distance) certified for use by providers with a PtP VTS ESCON configuration.

Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS) Control

The PtP VTS configuration allows the GDPS service offering to include tape data in its management of data consistency and integrity across sites. An I/O VTS selection option is provided especially for use with GDPS such that all virtual volumes are processed from a primary VTS, and a copy is stored on the secondary VTS. Control capability has been added to allow GDPS to 'freeze' copy operations so that tape data consistency can be maintained across GDPS managed sites during a switch between the primary and secondary VTSs, and also provide synchronization of system data sets such as catalogs, the tape control database, and tape management databases with the PtP VTS after an emergency switchover.

Expanded DFSMS Tape Library Application Interface

PtP VTS operations can be user controlled through use of the expanded DFSMS Tape Library Application Interface. You can now dynamically control the copy mode of operation and I/O VTS selection mode. Additional functions include enable/disable copy operation, and query virtual drive and volume status. Users can tailor the control of their PtP VTS by writing their own application program that exploits the application interface.

Virtual Tape Controller

A VTC in the Virtual Tape Frame 3494 Model CX1 provides interconnection between two VTSs with the Peer-to-Peer Copy features, and provides two host attachments for the PtP VTS. There must be four (for the Model B10 or B18) or eight (for the Model B20 or B18) VTCs in a PtP VTS configuration. Each VTC is an independently operating, distributed node within the PtP VTS and continues to operate during scheduled or unscheduled service of another VTC.

Each VTC also provides two ESCON or two FICON host server attachments, 16 or 32 (with a B20 only) virtual addresses, and transfers data between host channels and the VTSs. Each ESCON attachment supports 64 logical paths and each FICON attachment supports 128 logical paths. A VTC with host server FICON attachment will also have two FICON attachments for VTS connectivity. Similarly, a VTC with host server ESCON attachment will have two ESCON attachments for VTS connectivity. Both Long Wavelength and Short Wavelength FICON connection are provided for server and VTS attachment. Within a Peer-to-Peer VTS, ESCON and FICON VTC intermix is provided.

VTC Operation

For a virtual mount on any of its addresses, the VTC will select one of the two VTSs to support the requested volume processing activities.

Each VTC performs the following:

  • Maintains synchronization of the copy of logical volumes
  • Creates logical volume copies using large block transfers of compressed logical volumes
  • Balances workload between the VTSs
  • Directs specific volume mounts to the VTS with a cached copy of the requested virtual volume
  • Provides status displays on a customer-selected Web site via the customer's intranet

When one of the VTSs is off-line for service, all activity will be directed to the remaining active VTS. When a VTS is returned to an active state, each of the Virtual Tape Controllers will resume copy operations to bring the VTSs into synchronization.

A VTC has two modes of operation for creating logical volume copies, either "Immediate Copy" or "Deferred Copy" mode, selectable using Advanced Policy Management functions. The service representative can also change the default setting. All VTCs within a PtP VTS must use the same mode of operation. In Immediate Copy mode, while both VTSs are active, a VTC will initiate the creation of a copy of a volume when a Rewind Unload command is received and will signal completion of the Rewind Unload when the copy operation is complete. If the companion VTS is inactive, then the Rewind Unload command will complete without a copy being made, and the copy creation operation will be given priority when the companion VTS returns to active state. In Deferred Copy mode, a VTC will schedule the copy operation after a Rewind Unload command is received. Completion time of the copy operation will depend on the activity of the VTSs.

For each VTC, the customer can select which of the two VTSs is to be used to create a volume (preferred), or request that the workload be balanced between the two VTSs.

PtP Specialist

Each VTC provides an optional Web user interface to the IBM TotalStorage Peer-to-Peer Virtual Tape Server Specialist. The PtP Specialist provides a Web page that may be used to access PtP configuration, status, statistics, and online product documentation. This Web page may only be accessed through the Ethernet LAN connection provided on each VTC. The configuration and management of the Ethernet LAN connection must be provided by the user and its use is optional.

Standby Virtual Tape Controllers

An additional 3494 Model CX1 with four VTCs can be installed as standby for four active VTCs in a PtP VTS configuration. The standby VTCs at the remote site are intended for use where the VTSs are physically separated to provide disaster backup. If all the VTCs at the primary site become unavailable, then, with intervention by a service representative, the remote VTS and the standby VTCs can be started in read/write disconnected mode of operation to provide read and write access to volumes stored in the VTS. A host system must be configured and available to the remote site.

"Call Home" Service Support

When activated, the "Call Home" function automatically opens a service alert when a problem occurs with the 3494 Models B10, B18, B20, AX0, or CX1 VTC feature, or a 3590 Model A60 or A50 Controller in a 3494. The "Call Home" process can also be initiated by a user from the 3494 library manager operator panel for these same models installed in a 3494. A service representative can be sent to the installation and status information can be transmitted to the Support Center for problem evaluation. In addition, "Call Home" allows these service alerts to be sent to a pager service so that multiple people, including the customer, can be notified. This function utilizes the Remote Support Feature or the IBM TotalStorage Master Console. The service representative can activate or deactivate this function on the VTS or VTC, or the 3590 Model A60 or A50 Controller, using service menus.

    • GDPS
    • Disaster backup and recovery
    • Remote tape vault

A VTS can help improve the efficiency of mainframe and open systems tape operations by efficiently using disk storage, tape capacity, and tape speed, and by providing a large number of tape addresses. The VTS provides a wide range of configuration options to address the needs of small and large enterprises. The VTS allows you to standardize on a single tape technology across multiple diverse hardware and operating systems. Elimination of heterogeneous tape technologies such as DLT, 8mm, or 4mm tape should simplify operating procedures, allow data sharing, and reduce the cost of growth. These benefits make VTS a suitable repository for all your local and remote backups, and archival data. The VTS helps support your business intelligence initiatives by allowing shared volume access between mainframes and open systems platforms.

The VTS Model B10 is an entry system for smaller environments and the VTS Model B20 is a high performance solution for customers with demanding performance requirements. Both models provide a wide range of capacity, attachment, and functional options to meet growth and configuration requirements. IBM continues to dramatically extend attachability, configurability, and manageability of the VTS family. The features and functions included in the VTS help to extend your investment in VTS and provide a growth path for a growing tape workload.

The VTS has two separate features that you can use for disaster backup and recovery:

  • Peer-to-Peer Copy:

The Peer-to-Peer Copy feature, an IBM solution for disaster recovery, allows the VTS to operate in a PtP VTS configuration by interconnecting two VTSs and automatically maintaining volume copies in both VTSs. This option can improve your sequential file data availability and recoverability. The redundant components of the PtP VTS can be separated, thus making it an ideal solution for remote backup and recovery. If you have, or plan to have, a GDPS operation, PtP VTS is an ideal solution for the tape workload through its remote dual copy capability. Alternatively, the entire PtP VTS can be used in a local environment to improve data availability and recoverability.

A clear benefit of this PtP VTS announcement is the increased performance and distance of FICON attachment, as compared to ESCON. Your business continuity is key and a very high priority in today's enterprise market space. This FICON offering demonstrates IBM's dedication and commitment to business continuity by providing additional benefits of a Dual Ethernet Switch with redundant power supplies. The extended distance of FICON over ESCON better enables VTS subsystems to be geographically disbursed allowing greater business continuance options.

  • Import/Export:

Volumes required for disaster backup can be exported from a stand-alone VTS using the import/export facility of the Advanced Function feature. These volumes can be stored remotely and entered into a disaster recovery VTS using the import facility of the Advanced Function and Advanced Policy Management features.

The Advanced Policy Management features provide policy management for physical volume pooling and dual volume copy. Policies can be administered dynamically using DFSMS or statically with customer supplied definitions.

The VTS uses disk storage and the unique performance and capacity of the 3590 Tape Drives to help reduce the total cost of ownership of tape solutions for z/OS, OS/390, MVS, TPF, z/VM, VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, AIX, Windows, and UNIX environments.

The PtP VTS will interconnect two Model B10, B18, or B20 VTSs with four or eight VTCs, to provide both remote and local peer-to-peer copy capability between two VTSs using either FICON or ESCON connections (the VTS Model B18 can only connect to ESCON channels). It will automatically create a copy of any newly created or updated volume in either VTS transparently to customer applications with no host processor resources required to copy virtual volumes. Either volume copy can be used to satisfy a specific mount request.

The interconnected VTSs and VTCs can be in separate locations to allow remote copy for remote vaulting applications. A PtP VTS having a local VTS and a remote VTS can enhance the disaster backup and recovery process and improve data availability and recovery. Each component in a PtP VTS is replicated one or more times to maximize access to data and eliminate single points of failure. Access to volumes will be maintained after single and many multiple component failures. Service on one component of the PtP VTS can occur concurrently with the operation of the rest of the PtP VTS. Automatic copy of volumes between two local VTSs will improve data availability, data recovery, and balance workload between the VTSs.

The interconnected components of a PtP VTS are:

  • VTCs - provide host FICON or ESCON attachment and interconnection of two VTSs
  • Model B10, B18 (ESCON only), or B20 VTS - VTS with the Peer-to-Peer Copy features
  • Model CX1 - holds two or four VTCs

The Virtual Tape Frame 3494 Model CX1 provides the housing and power for two or four VTCs. There are two power control compartments, each with its own power cord to allow connection to two power sources.

  • Each VTC in a Model CX1 can be attached to two FICON host systems that are located up to 100 km away using appropriate switches and Dense Wave Division Multiplexors (DWDM). One level of cascade support is provided (two dynamic switches). Short wavelength attachments provide for a direct link of up to 300 meter distance on 50 micron fiber and up to 125 meter distance on 62.5 micron fiber when running at 2-Gbps. Long wavelength attachments provide for a direct link of up to 10 km distance on 9 micron fiber.

Hardware Requirements

The PtP VTS consists of two VTSs attached to two different 3494s and interconnected with four or eight VTCs contained in Virtual Tape Frame 3494 Model CX1s. The VTC is connected by ESCON or FICON cables to the VTS which is externally attached to the Tape Library Base Frame 3494 Model L10, L12, or L14.

Virtual Tape Frame

The Virtual Tape Frame 3494 Model CX1 is a frame for holding the VTCs. The Model CX1 supplies power for the installed VTCs. It contains two power control compartments, each with its own power cord to allow connection to two power sources. The feature for the proper VTC configuration depends on your PtP configuration of ESCON, FICON long wavelength (LW), or FICON short wavelength (SW) attachments between the VTC and host system attachments, and the VTC to VTS attachments. Each Model CX1 must contain two or four VTCs by specifying two or four of the following features:

  • 0204 (50 Micron with an LC connector on one end and an SC connector on the other end)
  • 0205 (62.5 Micron with LC connectors on both ends)
  • 0206 (62.5 Micron with an LC connector on one end and an SC connector on the other end)

The VTC FICON features have LC connectors, and support either native FICON short wavelength or long wavelength attachments with either LC or SC Duplex connectors (with the appropriate cable feature).

FICON Long Wavelength

The 9 micron fibre cable with SC Duplex connectors on the host end can be attached to fibre components with SC Duplex connectors, such as FICON Longwave channel features on G5 or G6 servers (#2314) or zSeries servers (#2315), or Longwave GBIC features on the IBM 2042 INRANGE FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director. The 9 micron LC Duplex connector can be attached to fibre components with LC Duplex connectors, such as the new FICON channel feature for zSeries servers (FICON Express LW 1.75, #2319) or the IBM 2032 McData ED-6064 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director.

FICON Short Wavelength

The 50 (or 62.5) micron fibre cable with SC Duplex connectors on the host end can be attached to fibre components with SC Duplex connectors, such as FICON Shortwave channel features on G5 or G6 servers (#2316) or zSeries servers (#2318), or Shortwave GBIC features on the IBM 2042 INRANGE FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director. The 50 (or 62.5) micron LC Duplex connector can be attached to fibre components with LC Duplex connectors, such as the new FICON channel feature for zSeries servers (FICON Express SW 1.75, #2320) or the IBM 2032 McData ED-6064 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director.

If different FICON cable lengths are needed, they must be ordered separately. Refer to the FICON cable planning information in the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0448) or the following information.

Additional Cables, Fabric Components, and Cabling Solutions

Software Requirements

The PtP VTS appears to attached host system software as four or eight fully configured independent "3490E" tape subsystems with 16 or 32 tape drives, each (64, 128, or 256 virtual drives total) in a single composite library with associated Cartridge System Tape or Enhanced Capacity Cartridge System Tape cartridges. This allows applications that use IBM's current 3490E tape drives and automation systems to easily use the PtP VTS. The software support is via the VTC and the VTS.

Native VM/ESA or z/VM hosts, and VSE/ESA guest hosts of VM/ESA or z/VM, attached to a PtP VTS are supported in an environment where an OS/390 or z/OS host with full support of PtP VTS is also attached to the library.

Software support for the PtP VTS is provided on the following minimum operating system levels:

  • OS/390 and z/OS:
    • OS/390 Version 2 Release 10 and its associated level of DFSMS.
    • z/OS Version 1 Release 1, or later, and the associated level of DFSMS.
    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTF's.

  • z/VM:

    • z/VM Version 3 Release 1, or later. APAR VM62710 is required for native z/VM support with FICON.

    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTF's.

  • VM/ESA:

    • VM/ESA Version 2 Release 4, or later. APAR VM62710 is required for native VM/ESA support with FICON.

    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTF's.

  • VSE/ESA guest hosts:
    • VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5, or later.
    • EREP Version 3.5 plus PTF's.

Enhancements to DFSMS/MVS allow the host to recognize that a library is a PtP VTS. The host is aware of the distributed, or peer, VTSs as well as the composite PtP VTS library image that contains virtual drives and logical volumes. The operations staff can request the status of distributed VTS libraries and the composite PtP VTS library image. With the enhanced software, the host can identify the originating distributed library related to events and status changes so that the operations staff sees useful messages when intervention is required. In addition, the host logs hourly statistical records from distributed libraries as well as from the composite PtP VTS library image.

Virtual Tape Controller Features

The VTC provides interconnection between host systems and two VTSs with Peer-to-Peer Copy features using either ESCON or FICON interfaces. The VTC feature for the proper VTC attachment depends on your PtP configuration of ESCON, FICON long wavelength (LW), or FICON short wavelength (SW) attachments between the VTC and host system attachments, and the VTC to VTS attachments. For VTC to VTS FICON attachments, VTS 0 must be attached to the adapter in slot 1 of each VTC in the PtP VTS configuration, and VTS 1 must be attached to the adapter in slot 2 of each VTC in the PtP VTS configuration. The wavelength (long or short) of the VTC card must match the wavelength of the FICON switch or interface it is attaching to, so wavelength configuration of each VTC in the Model CX1 must match the PtP configuration requirements. Refer to the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Automated Tape Library Introduction and Planning Guide (GA32-0448) for assistance in determining the correct features to order.
