IBM TotalStorage N3700

The N3700 consists of the Model A10 or Model A20, and its associated software.

The Model A10 is designed to provide a single node filer with NFS, CIFS, and iSCSI support in a 3U, integrated filer mounted in a standard 19-inch rack. This base chassis includes redundant hot-plug power supplies, redundant cooling fans, and two integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports. The N3700 Model A10 is capable of being upgraded to an N3700 Model A20.

The Model A20 is designed to provide identical function as the N3700 Model A10, but with the addition of the Clustered Failover (CFO) function. The N3700 Model A20 consists of two processing nodes that are designed to provide failover and failback function, helping improve overall reliability.

Both N3700 models come fully configured with 14 disk drives of the same type. Disk drive options include 72 GB (10,000 or 15,000 rpm), 144 GB (10,000 or 15,000 rpm), and 300 GB (10,000 rpm).

The N3700 is designed to interoperate with products capable of data transmission in the industry-standard iSCSI, CIFS, and NFS protocols. This includes IBM eServer pSeries, iSeries, and xSeries products.

Details and information on N3700 interoperability are available at:

http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/nas

N Series EXP600 expansion unit

Physical capacity of the N3700 can be scaled to up to 16.8 TB with the attachment of up to three EXP600 expansion units. The EXP600 expansion unit comes fully configured with 14 disk drives of the same type and TotalStorage N series offerings. Disk drive options include 72 GB (10,000 or 15,000 rpm), 144 GB (10,000 or 15,000 rpm), and 300 GB (10,000 rpm).

  • MultiStore: Enables creation of private logical partitions in filer networks.

  • SnapMirror: Provides mirroring of data to one or more network filers.

  • SnapLock Compliance: Prevents deletion or alteration of data prior to a specified retention date.

  • SnapLock Enterprise: Provides function similar to SnapLock Compliance, but allows administrators to delete SnapLock Enterprise volumes.

  • SnapRestore: Helps recover data that has been compromised or lost.

  • SnapVault Primary: Provides a centralized disk-based backup for heterogeneous storage environments; it is the license for the primary backup system in use.

  • SnapVault Secondary: Provides function similar to the SnapVault Primary, but is required to attain the license for the secondary backup device.

  • LockVault Compliance: Integrates IBM SnapLock and IBM SnapVault technologies to create a solution specifically designed to address compliance requirements for unstructured data. Designed to prevent deletion or alteration of data prior to a specified retention date.

  • LockVault Enterprise: Integrates IBM SnapLock and IBM SnapVault technologies to create a solution specifically designed to address compliance requirements for unstructured data. This enterprise version provides function similar to LockVault Compliance, but allows administrators to delete LockVault Enterprise volumes.

    • 3U, standard 19-inch rackmount enclosure
    • Fourteen disk drives (of the same interface, capacity, and speed)
    • Redundant hot-plug power supplies and cooling fans

Licensed Functions

The following licensed function is provided with Models A10 and A20 at no additional charge:

  • DataONTAP

The following licensed functions are available on Models A10 and A20 as optional features.

  • CIFS
  • HTTP
  • NFS
  • CFO (Model A20 only)
  • FlexClone
  • LockVault Compliance
  • LockVault Enterprise
  • MultiStore
  • SnapMirror
  • SnapLock Compliance
  • SnapLock Enterprise
  • SnapMover (Model 20 only)
  • SnapRestore
  • SnapVault Primary
  • SnapVault Secondary

All N3700 licensed functions are enabled, authorized, and activated at the 2863 system level. In the context of licensed functions, these terms are defined as follows:

2863 system: Refers to the 2863 base unit and all physically attached 2863 expansion units.

2863 base unit: Refers to the Model A10 and A20.

2863 expansion unit: Refers to the Model 001.

Enablement: Refers to the selection of a 2863 licensed function indicator feature number to technically activate a licensed function.

Authorization: Refers to the acquisition of a N series function authorization (IBM 2870) feature number to establish authorization for use of a licensed function.

Activation: Refers to the installation of an activation code into the 2863 system. The activation code is made available by IBM.

Enablement

Each licensed function is enabled for a 2863 system through the selection of the appropriate licensed function indicator feature number on the 2863 base unit.

Each licensed function indicator feature selected on a 2863 base unit enables that function at the system level. These features are not selected on any attached 2863 expansion units.

Authorization

Authorization for the use of a licensed function on a 2863 system is established by acquiring 2870 function authorization feature numbers for the 2863 base unit.

Each function authorization acquired for a 2863 base unit establishes the authorization level for the 2863 system. For example, a 2863 system with a Model A20 and two Model 001 expansion units requires only one DataONTAP (2870 Model 632 feature number 7100) function authorization.

When 2870 function authorization feature numbers are initially acquired with a 2863 system (plant order), your 2870 function authorization will be assigned an IBM serial number. If you want to acquire additional function authorizations for that 2863 system, function authorization feature numbers must be ordered against the 2870 serial number associated with that 2863 system.

Note: Each 2863 system can only have one associated 2870 function authorization serial number.

Activation

Licensed functions are activated by the installation of activation codes into the 2863 system. The activation codes are made available by IBM.

The installation of activation codes is a client responsibility; however, IBM may choose to factory-install the activation codes on new machine orders.
