The IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller is a storage virtualization
system that incorporates highly specialized software, control engines
(SVC Storage Engines) installed in pairs, a master console, and UPSs.
The SAN Volume Controller hardware configuration consists of a cluster of
IBM 2145 Model 4F2 servers, called SVC Storage Engines. Each SVC Storage
Engine is a node; two nodes make up a node pair (I/O Group), and one to
four I/O Groups constitute a SAN Volume Controller cluster. The cluster
is scalable from one to four node pairs (I/O Groups) and supported by
dual read/write cache. This design is intended to avoid single points of
failure and support concurrent maintenance.
IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller Storage Engine
The SVC Storage Engine is shipped with preloaded IBM TotalStorage SAN
Volume Controller Storage Software (ordered separately).
The storage engines must be installed in pairs to provide load sharing
and failover protection.(1) Four optical fiber cables are required by
each engine in the cluster for connection to the Fibre Channel Switches
in the SAN. If the Master Console (#4001 or #4002) is included in the
initial SVC Storage Engine order, two additional optical fiber cables are
required. These cables are not provided as part of the engine but may be
ordered by feature number.
Each SVC Storage Engine has an Ethernet port for connection via
Ethernet LAN to the master console, which provides configuration and
error reporting. These connections need to be aggregated together
through an Ethernet hub or switch. The Ethernet hub or switch and
cabling are not included as part of the SAN Volume Controller.
Note: (1) The SVC Storage Engine may be installed only in multiples of
two, up to a maximum of eight machines per SAN Volume Controller cluster.
Master Console
The master console is used as a platform for all the configuration,
management, and service software required to manage the SAN Volume
Controller. The hardware feature, #4001, is a rack-mounted server and
includes a keyboard and monitor. The master console, monitor, and
keyboard (#4001) occupy a 2U space in the rack. Its preloaded software
provides the following functions:
- SNMP Trap management
- "Call Home" capability
- "Remote Service" capability via Virtual Private Network (VPN)
- Browser support for FC switches
- SAN Volume Controller CLI support for configuration
- SAN Volume Controller configuration using the SAN Volume Controller
Console
- SAN Topology rendering using Tivoli SAN Manager
The Master Console - Software (#4002) provides the same function, but
is a software-only alternative feature and must be installed on
equivalent customer-provided hardware. If this feature is selected, a
customer-supplied equivalent server with the following characteristics
must be provided.
- Hardware:
- One Pentium** 4 processor, minimum 2.6 GHz
- Minimum of 2 GB of system memory
- Two IDE hard disk drives, minimum 40 GB each
- CD-ROM and diskette drives
- Two 1 Gb ports for Ethernet connections (fiber or copper)
- One 2 Gb Fibre Channel host bus adapter (HBA) port, such as QLogic
2342 (dual port) or QLogic 2340 (single port) FC-2 cards, or equivalent
- Keyboard, such as the Space Saver NLS keyboard, or equivalent
- Monitor, such as Netbay 1U Flat Panel Monitor Console kit without
keyboard, or equivalent
- Mouse, or equivalent pointing device
- Software:
- Antivirus software (not required, but strongly recommended)
- Microsoft® Windows® Internet Explorer with the most recent Service
Pack
- Microsoft Windows operating system, one of:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Edition with Service Pack 4, or higher
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
The master console includes IBM and non-IBM Licensed Machine Code.
Use is subject to the terms of the applicable licenses.
The master console may be ordered either as feature #4001, or as
feature #4002 with the first SVC Storage Engine of the IBM TotalStorage
SAN Volume Controller. It is required for each SAN containing
IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controllers. Additional or subsequent SAN
Volume Controllers within a SAN can share the master console.
If the master console is used to manage more than two I/O Groups (4
nodes) within a cluster, it must have 2 GB of RAM. Master consoles
shipped after October 29, 2004, ship with 2 GB of RAM installed. For
master consoles shipped prior to that date, feature #4201 may be ordered
to increase the memory to 2 GB.
A power cord to connect the master console (#4001 only) to a standard
Power Distribution Unit (PDU) ships standard with the master console. If
the master console will not be installed in a rack with a PDU, a
country-specific power cord must be ordered with the master console to
connect to an alternate power source.
License Information for programs furnished with the master console
features (both #4001 and #4002) is shipped with the master console.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies
In the event of a power failure, the UPS can provide temporary power
while the contents of the SVC cache and cluster information is written to
the internal disk drive in the SVC. The UPS monitors the condition of
its battery to enable planned maintenance actions to be performed on a
day that is convenient for the customer.
The UPSs provide an independent source of power to each node in the
I/O group. They must not be used for any other purpose.
Each UPS in the pair (#8100) requires a 220 V, 15 amp power source and
must be protected by its own 15 amp circuit breaker (provided
separately). The UPSs of each node pair should be connected to separate
circuits to provide added redundancy.
One UPS pair (#8100) supports one or two I/O Groups; a second UPS pair
is required for a three or four I/O Group SVC cluster.
Power cords to connect the UPSs to a standard PDU ship standard with
the UPSs. In addition, country-specific power cords must be ordered for
UPSs so they can be installed in a rack without a PDU.

The IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller is designed to support up
to 2 petabytes of storage.
The maximum number of SVC Storage Engines supported in a SAN Volume
Controller cluster is eight, configured in four I/O groups.
Feature number 4201 may not be ordered for use in any master console
(#4001) shipped after October 29, 2004 or that already has 2 GB of memory
installed.
The SAN Volume Controller includes a license for the IBM TotalStorage
Productivity Center for Fabric V2.2 Bonus Kit. The license for the IBM
TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric V2.2 Bonus Kit applies to the
enterprise acquiring the SAN Volume Controller Storage Software and
allows up to 64 switch ports to be managed. Multiple Bonus Kit licenses
(including any licenses the enterprise may have for the predecessor to
the Bonus Kit, IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric V2.2 Bonus
Kit) are not cumulative. These 64 ports may be on more than one switch,
but every port on a switch selected for entitlement management must count
as a port in the "up to" number, unless the entire entitlement (all 64
ports) are allocated to a single switch which has more than 64 ports.
When more than 64 switch ports are managed in an enterprise, a separate
license for the full IBM Tivoli Storage Area Network Manager product is
required.
Additional limitations and configuration guidelines may apply, as
documented in the SAN Volume Controller Storage Software README file,
furnished publications for this product, and/or as listed under
Configuration Requirements and Guidelines at:

Every SAN Volume Controller must be connected via Ethernet to a master
console. Multiple clusters can be managed by a single master console.
Therefore, at least the first cluster installed in a SAN must include a
Master Console (#4001) or the Master Console - Software (#4002) feature.
Fibre Channel and Ethernet cables are not included as part of the
hardware provided by IBM. These are the responsibility of the customer.
Each SVC Storage Engine requires four fiber optic cables. If a master
console is included in the order for the initial SVC Storage Engine, two
additional fiber optic cables are required. Fiber optic cables may be
optionally ordered with the SVC Storage Engines by feature number.
Master Console - Software (#4002) requirments
This feature requires a customer-supplied server that meets the
following characteristics:
- One Pentium** processor, minimum 2.6 GHz
The SVC Storage Engines require that the SVC Storage Software V2
(5639-VC2) be ordered at the same time the initial order for the engines
of a cluster is placed.
The SVC storage software can be ordered via the AAS ordering system or
the Passport Advantage system. The appropropriate hardware feature
(#0017 for Passport Advantage, #0018 for AAS) must be included in the
hardware order for the initial engine to indicate the desired fulfillment
system.
For additional details, refer to Software Announcement 205-xxx, dated
February 15, 2005.
Master Console - Software (#4002) requirments
This feature requires a customer-supplied server operating with the
following software:
- Antivirus software (not required, but strongly recommended)
- Microsoft® Windows® Internet Explorer with the most recent Service
Pack
- Microsoft Windows operating system
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Edition with Service Pack 4, or higher
