Description

The IBM 2109 TotalStorage SAN 256B director:

  • Is designed to deliver next generation enterprise director performance, scalability, flexibility, reliability, and availability

  • Is designed to provide a single domain with 256-port Fabric Switch functionality, yielding greater scalability with fewer domains, faster Control Processor Blades for low latency Fabric OS services, as well as improved performance over the IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch M14

  • Offers forward and backward compatibility with all IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch models, 1, 2 and 4 Gbps auto-sensing capability, as well as Advanced Fabric Services and management tools

Designed for mid-range to enterprise level SAN applications, the SAN256B director includes a minimum of two control processors, dual power supplies, and fans in a 14U rack height. The SAN256B director base model includes the following functions:

  • Full Fabric operation and Universal Port operation on all ports (F_Port, FL_Port, and E_Port). Requires ordering at least one of the optional blades listed below. IBM recommends deployment of at least two blades per director to enable high availability configurations.

  • Inter Switch Link (ISL) Trunking, Advanced Zoning.

  • Web tools, Fabric Watch, Performance Monitor.

  • Fabric OS 5.0, Hot Code Activation.

Several optional features are available for the director, including the following:

  • M48 32-Port 4 Gbps Switch Blades

  • M48 16-Port 4 Gbps Switch Blades

  • 4 Gbps short wave transceivers

  • 2 Gbps long wave transceivers

  • Extended Fabric Activation feature to increase ISL buffer credits to support disaster tolerance solutions with up to 70 km distance between sites

  • Advanced Security Activation to enable policy-based security mechanisms integrated within Fabric Operating System

  • FICON operation with CUP and optional Advanced Security

  • Optional features for director installation into 2109-C36 Cabinet

IBM TotalStorage SAN256B director (2109-M48)

The IBM TotalStorage SAN256B director is designed to support up to eight, 32-port Fibre Channel switch blades enabling a single domain director with up to 256 universal (E, F, and FL), full duplex, auto-sensing ports in a single 14U enclosure. Each port is capable of self-negotiation to the highest speed supported by the attached SAN infrastructure, operating at either 1, 2 or 4 Gbps throughput. Distances up to 10 km, 35 km, or 80 km are supported using the appropriate optional long wave laser 2 Gbps transceivers and 9.0u fiber cables. Short wave laser transceivers support distances up to 500m at 1 Gbps and up to 300m at 2 Gbps or 150m at 4 Gbps with 50.0u fiber cables.

The SAN256B director is designed to provide high availability features including:

  • Full Fabric operation and Universal Port operation on all M48 ports (F_Port, FL_Port, and E_Port)

  • Dual-redundant control processors (active/standby) designed to provide automatic control processor failover

  • Many non-disruptive software upgrades

  • Hot-swappable switch blades

  • Hot-swappable power supplies in redundant power subsystem

  • Hot-swappable blowers in redundant cooling subsystem

  • Extensive diagnostics, and system monitoring capabilities integrated with Fabric OS management tools

  • Fabric Shortest Path First (FSPF) rerouting around failed links

Optional Features

The IBM TotalStorage SAN256B director is available with a number of selectable options. The base SAN256B director does not include switch blades which are available in either 32-or 16-port configurations. At least one switch blade is required for host and storage connectivity. The SAN256B may be configured by adding up to eight 32-port (#3432) or 16-port (#3416) switch blades and a mixture of short wave and long wave optical transceivers up to the maximum 256 ports.

The SAN256B director will require fiber optic cables for connection to the host systems, and storage systems or devices. These cables can be supplied by the customer, or ordered with the switch.

Additional features for the SAN256B director include:

  • 4 Gbps short wave SFP transceiver four pack (#2414) - provides four short wave optical transceiver for SFP LC media.

  • 10 km 2 Gb LW SFP transceiver (#2320) - provides 10 km capable long wave 2 Gb optical transceiver for SFP 9 micron LC media.

  • 10 km 2 Gb LW SFP transceiver four pack (#2324) - provides four 10 km capable long wave 2 Gb optical transceiver for SFP 9 micron LC media.

  • 35 km Extended Distance LW SFP Transceiver (#2335) - provides extended distance long wave optical transceiver for SFP 9 micron LC media.

  • 80 km Extended Distance LW SFP Transceiver (#2380) - provides extended distance long wave optical transceiver for SFP 9 micron LC media.

  • M48 32-port 4 Gbps Switch Blade (#3432) - provides one 4 Gbps, 32-port switch blade

  • M48 16-port 4 Gbps Switch Blade (#3416) - provides one 4 Gbps, 16-port switch blade.

  • M48 Remote Switch Activation (#7802) - provides license key to enable the interconnection of two SAN Switches with a pair of CNT's Open System Gateways across an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) wide area network.

  • M48 Extended Fabric Activation (#7803) - provides license key that helps optimize the management of the internal switch buffers to maintain performance on Inter-Switch Links (ISL) at distances greater than 10 km, and up to 70 km, utilizing selected fiber cable extension mechanisms

  • M48 Advanced Security Activation (#7823) - enables policy-based security mechanisms integrated within Fabric Operating System Versions 2.6, 3.1, 4.1 and 5.0. To enable Advanced Security capabilities, all switches within the IBM SAN Switches Fabric must be configured with their respective Fabric OS version (2.6, 3.1, 4.1 and 5.0) before activating the Advanced Security optional feature license key. When activated across the IBM SAN Switch Fabric, the Advanced Security Activation feature is designed to provide the following comprehensive security capabilities:
    • Centralized security management (trusted switches)
    • Fabric-wide security policies to control access
    • Port-level access control
    • Switch level access control
    • Management access controls (Telnet, SNMP, HTTP, API)
    • Encryption of management data such as passwords
    • Strong and non-reputable authentication between switches

  • M48 FICON with CUP activation (#7831) - provides IBM eServer zSeries FICON support

  • M48 FICON with CUP activation and Advanced Security Bundle (#7832) - provides both IBM eServer zSeries FICON support (#7831) and Advanced Security (#7823) in one bundle

  • First M48 installed in 2109-C36 (#9241) - provides installation of first 2109-M48 in 2109-C36.

  • Second M48 installed in 2109-C36 (#9242) - provides installation of a second 2109-M48 in 2109-C36.

The IBM TotalStorage SAN256B director is designed to support up to eight, sixteen-port or thirty two-port Fibre Channel switch blades enabling a single domain core fabric switch with 256 universal (E, F, and FL), full duplex, auto-sensing ports in a single 14U enclosure. Each port is capable of self-negotiation to the highest speed supported by the attached SAN infrastructure, operating at either 1, 2, or 4 Gbps throughput. Distances up to 10 km, 35 Km, or 80 Km are supported using the appropriate optional long wave laser transceiver and 9.0u fiber cables. Short wave laser transceivers support distances up to 500m at 1 Gb or up to 300m at 2 Gbps or 150m at 4 Gbps with 50.0u fiber cables. The SAN256B director is designed to provide high availability features including:

  • Dual-redundant control processors (active/standby) designed to provide automatic control processor fail over

Limitations

Due to the FCC Classification A and the acoustic sound rating for the IBM TotalStorage SAN256B (2109-M48), this product should not be installed in attended rooms. The SAN256B is used only in a typical commercial / industrial environment and not in a clean room.

The IBM TotalStorage SAN256B is supported only in the IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch Cabinet C36 (2109-C36).

Installation

Summary: The M48 is supported only in the IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch Cabinet C36 (2109-C36). You must specify in your Initial Plant Order if one or two SAN256B directors will be plant installed in the 2109-C36. The only configuration supported in the C36 Cabinet is one or two SAN256B directors.

Summary: This feature specifies that this is the first SAN256B to be installed into the C36 Cabinet during manufacture. This M48 will be located in the lower portion of the cabinet

SAN256B Configuration Options

The SAN256B may be configured by adding up to eight 32-port (#3432) or 16-port (#3416) switch blades and a mixture of short wave and long wave optical transceivers up to the maximum 256 ports.

Transceivers - Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP)

Summary: A minimum of sixteen SFPs are required for each 16-Port switch blade (#3416), or thirty-two SFPs for each 32-Port switch blade (#3432) ordered for the SAN256B director.

A mixture of short wave, long wave, or extended distance ports can be configured by adding up to a maximum of 256 optical transceivers. All available ports must be populated with SFPs.

(#2320) 2 Gbps Long wave SFP Transceiver

Summary: This feature provides one long wave SFP transceiver, designed to provide Fibre Channel connections at distances up to 10 Km (6.2 miles), while using the appropriate 9.0/125 micrometer single mode fiber optic cable.

(#2335) 35 Km Extended Distance 2 Gbps LW SFP Transceiver

Summary: This optional feature provides a Small Form factor Pluggable (SFP) fiber optic transceiver, designed for operation with single mode 9 micron fiber optic cables having distances up to 35 Km. The 35 Km Extended Distance Long wave (LW) SFP Transceiver is designed for full compatibility with the SAN256B director and can help support disaster tolerance solutions without the need for separate gateway integration.

The attaching fiber cable must be 50.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 300 meters at 2 Gbps speed or 150 meters at 4 Gbps. The attaching fibre cable must be 62.5/125 micrometers for distances up to 175 meters at 2 Gbps speed or 70 meters at 4 Gbps. The connection is a LC connector type.

Summary: This feature provides a means to obtain the unique activation key necessary to enable the Remote Switch capability within the SAN256B director firmware. Remote Switch function is used on two SAN switches that are interconnected with a pair of CNT's Open System Gateways, providing the fibre channel to asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) conversion, across a wide-area network.

Summary: The IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch Advanced Security Activation optional feature enables policy-based security mechanisms integrated within Fabric Operating System Versions 2.6, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.0. To enable Advanced Security capabilities, all switches within the IBM SAN Switches Fabric must be configured with their respective Fabric OS version (2.6, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.0) before activating the Advanced Security optional feature license key. When activated across the IBM SAN Switch Fabric, the Advanced Security Activation feature is designed to provide the following security capabilities.

  • Centralized security management (trusted switches)
  • Fabric-wide security policies to control access
  • Port level access control
  • Switch level access control
  • Management access controls (Telnet, SNMP, HTTP, API)
