The IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch M14 (2109-M14) is designed to deliver
next generation enterprise director performance, scalability,
flexibility, reliability and availability. The M14 SAN Director is also
designed to provide a single domain with 128-port Fabric Switch
functionality, yielding greater scalability with fewer domains, faster
Control Processor Blades for low latency Fabric OS services, as well as
improved over the previous M12 SAN Director. The M14 SAN Director offers
forward-and backward-compatibility with all IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch
models, 1 and 2 Gbit/sec auto-sensing capability, as well as Advanced
Fabric Services and management tools.
Designed for mid-range to enterprise level SAN applications, the M14
SAN Director includes a minimum of two 16-port 2 Gbit/Sec M14 switch
blades, thirty-two fiber optic transceivers, two control processors, dual
power supplies, and fans in 14U rack height. Functionality in the M14
SAN Director base model includes the following:
- Full Fabric operation and Universal Port operation on all M14 ports
(F_Port, FL_Port, and E_Port)
- FICON operation
- Inter Switch Link (ISL) Trunking, Advanced Zoning
- Web tools, Fabric Watch, Performance Monitor
- Fabric OS 4.2, Hot Code Activation
Several optional features are available for the M14 Director,
including the following:

IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch Model M14
The IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch M14 is designed to support up to
eight, sixteen-port Fibre Channel switch blades enabling a single domain
director with up to 128 universal (E, F, and FL), full duplex,
auto-sensing ports in a single 14U enclosure. Each port is capable of
self-negotiation to the highest speed supported by the attached SAN
infrastructure, operating at either 1 or 2 Gbit/sec throughput.
Distances up to 10 km, 35 km, or 70 km are supported using the
appropriate optional longwave laser transceiver and 9.0u fiber cables.
Shortwave laser transceivers support distances up to 500m at 1 Gbit/sec
and up to 300m at 2 Gbit/sec with 50.0u fiber cables.
The M14 SAN Director is designed to provide high availability features
including:
- Dual-redundant control processors (active/standby) designed to
provide automatic control processor fail over
- Non-disruptive software upgrades
- Hot-swappable switch blades
- Hot-swappable power supplies in redundant power subsystem
- Hot-swappable blowers in redundant cooling subsystem
- Extensive diagnostics, and system monitoring capabilities integrated
with Fabric OS management tools
- Fabric Shortest Path First (FSPF) rerouting around failed links.

Optional Features
The IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch M14 is available with a number of
selectable options. The M14 SAN Director includes two 16-port switch
blades, with 32 universal ports standard. A minimum of 32 Small
Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers is required and must be ordered
in the initial plant order. The M14 may be configured by adding up to
six additional 16-port switch blades (#3226) and a mixture of shortwave
and longwave optical transceivers up to the maximum 128 ports.
The M14 SAN Director will require fiber optic cables for connection to
the host systems, and storage systems or devices. These cables can be
supplied by the customer, or ordered with the switch.

transceiver for SFP LC media.
- M14 Shortwave SFP transceiver four pack (#2314) - provides four

- Fabric Manager V4 (Ten Domains) (#7250) and Fabric Manager V4 Upgrade
(From 10 Domains to Max Supported Domains) (#7252) - provides a
Java-based application that can simplify management of a multiple switch
fabric IBM SAN Switch Specialist and Fabric Manager run on the same
management server, attached to any switch in the core/edge fabric. It
may also manage up to eight fabrics. It requires Internet Explorer Web
Browser with Windows 2000 and Windows XP, or alternatively Netscape Web
Browser with Solaris 7 and Solaris 8.
- Remote Switch Activation (#7602) - provides license key to enable the
interconnection of two SAN Switches with a pair of CNT's Open System
Gateways across an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) wide area network.
- Extended Fabric Activation (#7603) - provides license key that
optimizes the management of the internal switch buffers to maintain
performance on Inter-Switch Links (ISL) at distances greater than 10 km,
and up to 70 km, utilizing selected fiber cable extension mechanisms
- M14 Advanced Security Activation (#7623) - enables policy-based
security mechanisms integrated within Fabric Operating System Versions
2.6, 3.1, and 4.1. To enable Advanced Security capabilities, all switches
within the IBM SAN Switches Fabric must be configured with their
respective Fabric OS version (2.6, 3.1, 4,., and 4.2) before activating
the Advanced Security optional feature license key. When activated
across the IBM SAN Switch Fabric, the Advanced Security Activation
feature is designed to provide the following comprehensive security
capabilities:
- Centralized security management (trusted switches)
- Fabric-wide security policies to control access
- Port level access control
- Switch level access control
- Management access controls (Telnet, SNMP, HTTP, API)
- Encryption of management data such as passwords
- Strong and non-reputable authentication between switches
- First M14 installed in 2109-C36 (#9231) - provides installation of
first 2109-M14 in 2109-C36.
- Second M14 installed in 2109-C36 (#9232) - provides installation of a

Summary: The IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch Advanced Security Activation
optional feature enables policy-based security mechanisms integrated

Fabric must be configured with their respective Fabric OS version (2.6,
