Abstract

The IBM 2109 SAN Fibre Channel Switch is used to interconnect multiple host servers with storage servers and devices, creating a Storage Area Network (SAN).

Model Abstract 2109-F16

(No Longer Available as of April 29, 2005)

The IBM 2109 SAN Switch Model F16 extends the broad range of scalable SAN connectivity solutions available from IBM for a wide variety of host and storage types. It includes sixteen nonblocking ports, each with full-duplex throughput at either 2 gigabits per second or 1 gigabit per second, and auto-sensing ports that self-negotiate to the highest speed supported by the attached server, storage, or switch. Hardware zoning is controlled at the port level, and software zoning is controlled at the worldwide name level.

The F16 provides support for high-speed data traffic with the Performance Bundle feature, which provides Inter-Switch Link (ISL) Trunking and Performance Monitoring. It provides Cascading support for flexibility in creating scalable fabric topologies. The Model F16 also comes with Brocade Web Tools, which provides a comprehensive set of management tools that support a Web browser interface for flexible, easy-to-use operations.

Description

IBM introduces Model F16 of the IBM TotalStorage Storage Area Network (SAN) Switch family, providing up to 2 Gigabit Fibre Channel (FC) performance and additional functions to support the storage networking demands for higher security, throughput, and management controls. This model is a 16-port Fibre Channel switch based on a new generation of switch technology. It is designed to provide a 2 gigabit per second port-to-port throughput with auto-sensing capability for connecting to existing 1 gigabit per second host servers, storage, and switches, in a smaller 1U form factor, requiring half the space of the previous 16-port SAN Switch. This model is also designed to be fully interoperable with the current IBM SAN Switches (Models S08 and S16).

The IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch, Model F16, when compared to the previous IBM SAN Switches (S08 and S16), provides the enhanced, higher-performance connectivity necessary to make enterprise information accessible and available across multiple host systems, from various storage systems or devices forming a manageable storage area network (SAN). IBM SAN Switches are designed to enable storage resources to be shared efficiently and to scale rapidly to meet the demands by users for highly available, heterogeneous access to expanding storage pools. Utilizing the ANSI standard Fibre Channel interconnect technology, the Switch provides 2 gigabit per second (200 MB/s) transfer bandwidth on each Fibre Channel connection port. This model of the IBM SAN Switch is capable of supporting up to 16 ports for midrange to high-end enterprises. The IBM SAN Switch is designed to provide:

  • High performance with low latency. The Switch's nonblocking architecture provides multiple simultaneous connections, each capable of up to 2 gigabits per second, with maximum latency of 2 microseconds.

  • Universal ports that self-configure as F-ports, FL-ports, or E-ports.

  • Auto-sensing ports that will self-negotiate to the highest speed supported by the attached servers, storage, or switch.

  • Each port supports the new Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) media with options for either shortwave optical connection for distances up to 300 meters, or longwave optical connections for distances up to 10 kilometers.

  • A smaller 1U package that can be either rack-mounted or used in a table-top configuration, with the option of a redundant power supply, providing a highly available switch.

  • Easy setup and configuration. Internal power-on self test and a Web browser interface usable from any Java-enabled browser on the Inter/intranet provide configuration monitoring and diagnostics.

  • Scalable SAN solutions. Cascading Switches enable flexibility in configurations to accommodate many different needs, and assure high availability and optimum performance. Connections to existing 2109 SAN Switches is supported, enabling an easy transition for existing Fibre Channel storage networks to the faster technology.

  • Brocade Web Tools, which allows you to control which host systems are logically connected to various storage systems and devices, providing security and access control.

  • Automatic Fabric discovery. The Switch allows external host and storage systems to discover other SAN-enabled systems that are connected to the connectivity infrastructure (fabric). This information is maintained within an internal name server database.

  • Distributed fabric services such a name serving, zoning, routing, and microcode upgrade.

  • Extended distance. The Switch can be configured with either shortwave or longwave Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceivers, for distances up to 10 kilometers between connections.

Optional Features

The IBM SAN Switch, Model F16 has a number of selectable options. The base Switch contains eight shortwave SFP transceivers GBICs, providing eight Fibre Channel port connections. You can select, in increments of one, additional shortwave or longwave transceivers up to the maximum of 16 ports. A second power supply can be installed on the Switch, providing a redundant power supply. This enables dual-power source configurations to minimize power outages, and, with the hot-pluggable capability of the power supplies, typically allows for nondisruptive maintenance should a power supply fail. The IBM SAN Switch can be used in either rack-mounted or tabletop configurations. The Switch requires fiber optic cables for connection to the host systems, and storage systems or devices. These cables can be customer supplied, or ordered with the Switch. Additional features available for the IBM SAN Switch include:

  • Performance Bundle Activation - adds support for Inter-Switch Link Trunking with up to four links, or 8 gigabits per second bandwidth; and performance monitoring tools for measuring end-to-end activities.

  • Extended Fabric Activation - extends the internal switch buffers to maintain performance on Inter-Switch Links at distances greater than 10 kilometers, and up to 70 kilometers utilizing selected fiber cable extension mechanisms.

  • Remote Switch Activation - provides for the interconnection of two SAN Switches with a pair of CNT's Open System Gateways across an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) wide area network.
