Abstract

The IBM 2109 SAN Fibre Channel Switch is used to interconnect multiple host servers with storage servers and devices, creating a Storage Area Network (SAN).

Model Abstract 2109-A16

The IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-R (2109-A16) multiprotocol router is designed to provide intelligent multiprotocol routing services to help enable IP-based global mirroring business continuity solutions, iSCSI-based host server storage consolidation solutions, and SAN routing capabilities for infrastructure simplification solutions to selectively share resources between fabrics.

The SAN16B-R router is scalable from 8 to 16 ports, with each port capable of operating as 1-2 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) or as 1 Gbps Ethernet. This flexibility in configuration allows the SAN16B-R router to deploy services as needed on any active port including FC-FC Routing capability to enable increased SAN connectivity and resource sharing between fabrics, FCIP Tunneling to enable SAN extension over geographic distances, and iSCSI Gateway to enable host server storage consolidation.

The base SAN16B-R router provides a 2U rack mount chassis, dual redundant hot-pluggable power supplies and fans, zero Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics, and 8 active ports with each port configurable as 1-2 Gbps Fibre Channel or as 1 Gbps Ethernet. The base function includes Fibre Channel full fabric capability, Advanced Web Tools, Advanced Zoning, Router-to-Router Exchanged Based ISL Trunking, Extended Fabric capability, and iSCSI Gateway functionality. Orders must include SFP optics on all active ports; customers may select any combination of shortwave (SW), longwave (LW), and extended distance LW SFPs.

To enable additional capability and function, customers may optionally order the upgrade from 8 to 16 active ports, with ports configurable as 1-2 Gbps Fibre Channel or as 1 Gbps Ethernet. Customers can configure up to a maximum of 12 1 Gbps Ethernet ports. Additionally, customers may order the A16 FC-FC Routing Activation feature, A16 FCIP Activation feature, or the comprehensive A16 FCIP and Fibre Channel Routing Bundle. Each active 1 Gbps Ethernet port is designed to support up to eight iSCSI gateway sessions with IP-based host initiators, or when activated, support the optional FCIP tunneling capability.

Description

For enterprise customers with complex SAN requirements, the IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-R (2109-A16) is an intelligent multiprotocol router that supports growth, scalability, and distance connections, including the following new capabilities:

  • iSCSI Gateway for sharing Fibre Channel storage resources with IP-based iSCSI host initiator devices

  • Optional FC-FC Routing for increased SAN connectivity

  • Optional FCIP Tunneling for SAN extension over distance

These are described in detail below:

iSCSI Gateway

iSCSI Gateway capability is included in the IBM SAN16B-R base router and is designed to allow the integration of low-cost Ethernet-connected servers into a Fibre Channel SAN by using iSCSI protocol, enabling IP-based servers to leverage Fibre Channel SAN resources. It is designed to enhance asset utilization and enable new applications such as centralized backup. This level of integration can help reduce the expense of connecting low-cost servers directly into centrally managed SAN storage.

Optional FC-FC Routing

The optional FC-FC Routing is designed to allow devices located on separate SAN fabrics to communicate without merging the fabrics into a single large SAN environment. This routed network consists of multiple individual SAN fabrics that form one storage network connectivity model, known as a "Meta SAN."

Through the use of Logical SAN (LSAN), multiple SANs can be connected without being merged. This means devices can be interconnected without having to redesign and reconfigure the entire environment. At the same time, resources can be selectively and securely shared across multiple SANs.

The LSAN is designed to connect different SAN networks but allows only specified devices within the networks to communicate; it does not allow unrestricted communication. This model allows the creation of large Fibre Channel SANs that can continue to grow in a scalable manner. Rather than having to sort out domain ID conflicts, zoning inconsistencies, parameter mismatches, and so on, FC to FC routing allows devices to be interconnected while each SAN island remains its own Fibre Channel fabric known as an "edge fabric." In this model, fabrics are designed to retain their own separate fabric services, so that:

  • The scalability of one edge fabric does not affect another
  • Fabric reconfigurations do not propagate across edge fabrics
  • Faults in fabric services are contained

This is accomplished through the EX_Port. The EX_Port appears as a standard E_Port to the edge fabric. But, unlike an E_Port, the EX_Port terminates at the router and does not propagate fabric services or routing topology information to other edge fabrics.

Optional FCIP Tunneling

The optional FCIP Tunneling capability is designed to allow organizations to extend Fibre Channel SANs over longer distances, using IP-based MAN/WAN infrastructure. It helps two important advantages.

  1. FCIP Tunneling provides full integration with the switch, helping to enable more simple and cost effective means to deploy and manage extended distance communications compared to the use of an external gateway. This allows for easier management, tighter integration, and a lower cost with a smaller rack footprint.

  2. FCIP Tunneling can be integrated with FC-FC Routing. This prevents faults on the WAN link from becoming Meta SAN events, and enables a more secure distance-connectivity solution for disaster recovery applications.

IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-R base features

The IBM TotalStorage SAN 16B-R multiprotocol router is designed to provide the following:

The IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-R multiprotocol router (2109-A16) provides scalability with ports on demand; 8 ports activated in the base, with 8 additional (16 total) enabled "on demand". Additional activation for ports 8-15 is available with features #7901 (initial order/IPO), or #7902 (field install/MES)

Note: the first port is designated as port zero and the last port is designated as port fifteen.

The base router initial activation is for 8 ports and you must order a minimum 8 SFP transceivers in your initial plant order of the 2109-A16 (Min = 2110+2120+2335=8). The maximum Tri-Rate SFP Transceivers is 16 of all types (Max = 2110+2120+2335=16).

Tri-Rate Transceivers - Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP)

The Tri-Rate SFPs can run in three modes of operation: 1 / 2 Gbps Fibre Channel as well as 1 Gbps Ethernet, supporting a single SFP format across all activated ports. The SW Tri-Rate SFP can be used for distances up to 500 meters. The LW Tri-Rate SFPs can be used for distances up to 10 or 35 Km.

(#2110) Tri-Rate SW SFP Transceiver

Summary: This feature provides a Tri-Rate (1 and 2 GB/s and Gigabit Ethernet) short wave SFP transceiver for distances up to 500 meters.

(#2120) Tri-Rate 10 Km LW SFP Transceiver

Summary: This feature provides a Tri-Rate (1 and 2 GB/s and Gigabit Ethernet) short wave SFP transceiver for distances up to 10 Km.

In many situations, the required lengths and installation of fiber optic cables will be unique to each customer's configuration and facility specifications. IBM Network Integration and Deployment Services, offered by IBM Global Services, can provide assistance for these unique cabling and installation requirements. For situations where the Fibre Channel components and attaching subsystems are within the distances available, there are several features available to accommodate these simple installations.

Ports on demand activation
