High-performance disk storage for business-critical enterprise
workloads
The IBM TotalStorage DS8000 series is a high-performance,
high-capacity series of disk storage devices. It is designed to extend
upon the functionality, stability, and reliability of the current IBM
TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server. The DS8000 series incorporates
IBM's POWER5 processor technology in a dual two-way processor-complex
offering, the DS8100 Model 921, or for customers requiring additional
performance or capacity, two dual four-way processor-complex offerings,
the DS8300 Models 922 and 9A2. These models are designed to offer higher
performance, additional capacity, increased addressing capabilities, and
additional enhancements versus the ESS Model 800. In addition, the
DS8300 Model 9A2 further demonstrates IBM's unique ability to converge
server and storage technologies by enabling the creation of multiple IBM
TotalStorage Storage System LPARs (Logical Partitions).
The DS8000 series uses the highly reliable and functional microcode
base of the TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) Model 800, on
top of a leading-edge, modular hardware design. This innovative design
incorporates a high-bandwidth internal fabric designed to support fault
tolerance, highly expandable and flexible processor memory, and the
latest in Fibre Channel attached disks. It has a dual-processor complex
implementation that supports concurrent microcode loads, transparent I/O
failover and failback support, and redundant, hot-swappable components to
help support 24 x 7 business environments. The maximum host I/O
operations per second of a DS8300 is up to six times the maximum of an
ESS Model 800, so that you can easily consolidate your workload into a
single storage subsystem. The DS8100 and DS8300 also offer power and
packaging which takes 20 percent less floor space than a base ESS Model
800.
The DS8000 series extends the advantages offered by IBM's TotalStorage
Resiliency Family technologies, including FlashCopy, Global Mirror, Metro
Mirror, as well as other mirroring functions supported by the ESS Model
800. The DS8000 series also provides z/OS performance capabilities
provided by Parallel Access Volumes (PAV), I/O Priority Queuing, and
Multiple Allegiance.
The DS8100 offers scalability of physical capacity from 1.1 to 115.2
TB, while the DS8300 offers a maximum capacity of 192 TB. Fibre Channel
disks are available in 73 GB, 146 GB, and 300 GB capacities and these
will be intermixable within a single system. Thus, you can better tailor
your disk storage configuration to cost effectively address capacity and
performance requirements. RAID-5 as well as RAID-10 are both
intermixable within a single system.
The DS8000 series offers a wide range of management functionality and
flexibility to help I/T organizations more easily manage their storage
environments. These systems come standard with the IBM TotalStorage DS
Storage Manager, an easy-to-use, high-function GUI-based manager for
performing and managing logical configuration and copy services functions
as well as a single command line interface which can help automate these
functions.
Technology for high-performance, reliability, and enhanced
connectivity
The DS8000 series features the following hardware and technology that
can enhance performance, connectivity, and reliability:
- POWER5 processor technology - The DS8000 series features
IBM's POWER5 server technology to help support high performance. The
maximum host I/O operations per second of the DS8300 Model 922 or 9A2 is
up to six times the maximum of an ESS Model 800.
- Multiple Storage System Logical Partitions (LPARs) - The
DS8300 Model 9A2 supports two Storage System LPARs, each with their own
resources. This may enable you to purchase one storage server in
environments where more than one may have been needed in the past.
- Industry-standard Fibre Channel disk drives - The DS8000
series offers a selection of Fibre Channel disk drives, including 300 GB
drives, allowing a DS8100 to scale up to 115.2 TB of capacity and a
DS8300 to scale up to 192 TB of capacity.
- Four-port Fibre Channel/FICON adapters - These adapters
are designed not only to enhance connectivity, but increase configuration
flexibility because the individual ports can be configured to support
Fibre Channel or FICON.
- Processor memory offerings - The DS8100 offers up to 128
GB of processor memory and the DS8300 offers up to 256 GB of processor
memory. In addition, the Non-Volatile Storage (NVS) scales to the
processor memory size selected, which can also help optimize performance.
Improved caching algorithms can also help enhance performance versus the
ESS Model 800 through technologies for managing cache space.
- More host attachments than the ESS Model 800 - The DS8100
offers up to 128 MB of processor memory and the DS8300 offers up to 32
host adapters. This can be an intermix of ESCON and Fibre Channel/FICON
adapters, further increasing your ability to share your disk storage.
- Internal fabric - The DS8000 series features an internal
fabric which can help provide increased bandwidth.
- High availability - The DS8000 series is designed and
implemented with component redundancy to help avoid many potential single
points of failure.
Functional enhancements for flexibility and ease-of-use
The DS8000 series offers functional enhancements and capabilities that
are designed to increase flexibility and usability.
Logical Unit Number (LUN) and volume management
- Non-disruptive LUN and volume creation and deletion are now
supported. When a LUN or volume is deleted, the capacity can be
re-formatted and re-used.
- LUNs and volumes can be configured to span arrays. Therefore, the
size of the volume/LUN is not constrained by the size of the array. LUNs
up to 2 TB are supported. CKD volumes up to 65,520 cylinders are
supported.
Addressing capabilities
More Logical Subsystems (LSS), logical devices, and logical paths can
be defined versus the current ESS.
- Up to 255 logical subsystems (LSS)
- Up to 65,280 logical devices
- Up to 130,560 FICON logical paths (512 logical paths per control unit
image)
- Up to 8,000 process logins (509 per SCSI-FCP port)
These addressing boundaries are extended to each storage image in a
DS8300 Model 9A2.
Simplified storage management for zSeries with z/OS
For zSeries and z/OS environments, the DS8000 series can support a new
65,520 cylinder 3390 volume. This volume option has a capacity of
approximately 55.7 GB. It can help relieve addressing constraints,
improve disk resource utilization, and improve storage administrator
productivity by providing the ability to consolidate multiple disk
volumes into a single address.
Administration and management
- Online and offline configuration capability features an a Web-based
graphical user interface (GUI) designed to offer increased ease of use.
- A single command line interface (CLI) supports both logical
configuration and copy services.
Technology and packaging
The DS8000 series features technology, packaging, and capabilities
designed to help improve availability and reduce costs.
- The packaging allows a single DS8100 or DS8300 base frame to take up
to 20% less floor space than an ESS base frame. This can help reduce
your costs for valuable floor space.
- Capabilities such as remote code distribution and e-mail notification
of link failures can also improve availability.
Choice of models to meet your performance and configuration
needs
The DS8000 series features several models in a higher-density
footprint, than the ESS Model 800, providing configuration flexibility.
The DS8100 Model 921 offers a dual two-way processor complex and holds
up to 128 disk drives for a maximum capacity up to 38.4 TB. It also
supports up to 128 GB of processor memory and up to 16 ESCON or Fibre
Channel/FICON adapters. With an optional expansion unit (DS8000 Model
92E), a single DS8100 Model 921 solution supports up to 384 disk drives,
for a total capacity of up to 115.2 TB.
The DS8300 Model 922 offers a dual four-way processor complex and
holds up to 128 disk drives for a maximum capacity of up to 38.4 TB. It
also supports up to 256 GB of processor memory and up to 16 ESCON or
Fibre Channel/FICON adapters. With one or two optional expansion units,
it scales as follows:
- With one DS8000 Model 92E expansion unit, the DS8300 Model 922
supports up to 384 disk drives, for a maximum capacity of up to 115.2 TB,
and up to 32 ESCON or Fibre Channel/FICON adapters.
- With two DS8000 Model 92E expansion units, the DS8300 Model 922
supports up to 640 disk drives, for a maximum capacity of up to 192 TB,
and up to 32 ESCON or Fibre Channel/FICON adapters.
The DS8300 Model 9A2 offers a dual four-way processor complex and
supports the use of two Storage System LPARs. It holds up to 128 disk
drives for a maximum capacity of up to 38.4 TB. It also supports up to
256 GB of processor memory and up to 16 ESCON or Fibre Channel/FICON
adapters. With one or two optional DS8000 Model 9AE expansion units, it
scales as follows:
- With one DS8000 Model 9AE expansion unit, the DS8300 Model 9A2
supports up to 384 disk drives for a maximum capacity of up to 115.2 TB,
and up to 32 ESCON or Fibre Channel/FICON adapters.
- With two DS8000 Model 9AE expansion units, the DS8300 Model 9A2
supports up to 640 disk drives, for a maximum capacity of up to 192 TB,
and up to 32 ESCON or Fibre Channel/FICON adapters.
Depending on workload, the maximum host I/O operations per second of
the DS8100 Model 921 is up to three times the maximum of the ESS Model
800, and the maximum host I/O operations per second of the DS8300 Model
922 or 9A2 is up to six times the maximum of the ESS Model 800. This may
allow you to consolidate workload from multiple Model 800s or Model F20s
to a single DS8100 or DS8300 system.
Storage System Logical Partitions (LPARs) Enhance
flexibility
The DS8300 Model 9A2 exploits LPAR technology, allowing you to run two
separate storage server images. Each Storage System LPAR has access to:
- 50 percent of the processors
- 50 percent of the processor memory
- Up to 16 host adapters
- Up to 320 disk drives (up to 96 TB of capacity)
With these separate resources, each Storage System LPAR can run the
same or different versions of microcode, and can be used for completely
separate production, test, or other unique storage environments within
this single physical system. This may enable storage consolidations
where separate storage subsystems were previously required, helping to
increase management efficiency and cost effectiveness.
A variety of configuration options
Physical capacity for the DS8000 series is purchased via disk
drive sets. A disk drive set contains 16 identical disk drives
(same capacity and rpm). Disk drive sets are available in 73 GB
(15,000 rpm), 146 GB (10,000 rpm and 15,000 rpm), and 300 GB
(10,000 rpm). For additional flexibility, feature conversions
are available to exchange existing disk drive sets when
purchasing new disk drive sets with higher capacity. Price,
performance, and capacity flexibility to help meet specific
application and business requirements is provided through
support for the intermix of 73 GB, 146 GB, or 300 GB drives.
IBM standby capacity on demand offering for the DS8000
The IBM Standby Capacity On Demand for DS8000 (Standby CoD) offering
allows inactive disk drives to be installed that can be easily activated
as business needs require.
IBM offers capacity on demand solutions that are designed to meet the
changing storage needs of rapidly growing e-businesses. The Standby CoD
offering is designed to provide you with the ability to tap into
additional storage and is particularly attractive if you have rapid or
unpredictable growth, or if you simply want the knowledge that the extra
storage will be there when you need it.
With this offering, up to four Standby CoD disk drive sets (64 disk
drives) can be factory or field installed into your system. To activate,
you simply logically configure the disk drives for use -- a nondisruptive
activity that does not require intervention from IBM. Upon activation of
any portion of a Standby CoD disk drive set, you must place an order with
IBM to initiate billing for the activated set. At that time, you can
also order replacement Standby CoD disk drive sets.
As with the IBM Standby Capacity on Demand for ESS offering, this
offering also allows you to purchase licensed functions based upon your
machine's physical capacity excluding unconfigured Standby CoD capacity.
This can help improve your cost of ownership since your extent of IBM
authorization for licensed functions can grow at the same time you need
your disk capacity to grow.
To further improve your cost of ownership, this offering does not have
an offering fee premium.
A Standby CoD disk drive set must be activated within a twelve-month
period from the date of installation; all such activation is permanent.

Flexibility with support for RAID-5 and RAID-10
With the DS8000 series, physical capacity can be configured as RAID-5,
RAID-10, or a combination of both. RAID-5 can offer excellent
performance for most applications, while RAID-10 can offer better
performance for selected applications, in particular, high random write
content applications in the open systems environment. RAID-10 combines
RAID-1 (mirroring) with RAID-0 (striping). Each drive within a RAID-10
array is mirrored to a second drive within the array, and to optimize
performance, data is striped across the drives within the array.
The decision to configure capacity as RAID-5 or RAID-10, as well as
the amount of capacity to configure for each type, can be made at any
time. RAID-5 and RAID-10 arrays can be intermixed within a single system
and the physical capacity can be logically reconfigured at a later date
(for example, RAID-5 arrays can be reconfigured into RAID-10 arrays).
Enhanced connectivity with four-port Fibre Channel/FICON host
adapters
The DS8000 series is designed to offer enhanced connectivity with the
availability of four-port Fibre Channel/FICON Host Adapters. The 2Gb
Fibre Channel/FICON Host Adapters, which are offered in long-wave and
shortwave, auto-negotiate to either 2Gb or 1Gb link speeds. This
flexibility enables the ability to exploit the potential benefits offered
by higher performance, 2Gb SAN-based solutions, while also maintaining
compatibility with existing 1Gb infrastructures. In addition, the
individual ports on the adapter can be configured with Fibre Channel
Protocol (FCP) or FICON. This can help protect your investment in Fibre
Channel adapters, and increase your ability to migrate to new servers.
The DS8000 series also offers two-port ESCON adapters. A DS8100 Model
921 can support up to a maximum of 16 host adapters which equates to a
maximum of 64 Fibre Channel ports or a maximum of 32 ESCON ports. A
DS8300 Model 922 or 9A2 can support up to a maximum of 32 host adapters
which equates to a maximum of 128 Fibre Channel ports or a maximum of 64
ESCON ports.
The DS8000 series offers extensive connectivity support -- including
Fibre Channel, FICON, or ESCON -- across a broad range of server
environments -- including IBM eServer zSeries, pSeries, IBM eServer p5,
iSeries, IBM eServer i5, and xSeries servers, servers from Sun and
Hewlett-Packard, and non-IBM Intel-based servers. This rich support of
heterogeneous environments and attachments, along with the flexibility to
easily partition the DS8000 series storage capacity among the attached
environments, can help support storage consolidation requirements and
dynamic, changing environments.
Rich set of business continuance solutions
The DS8000 series supports a rich set of copy service functions and
management tools that can be used to build solutions to help address
business continuance requirements.
Point-in-time copy solutions
IBM TotalStorage FlashCopy is designed to provide a point-in-time copy
capability for logical volumes. FlashCopy creates a physical point-in-
time copy of the data, with minimal interruption to applications, and
makes it possible to access both the source and target copies
immediately.
FlashCopy supports many advanced capabilities, including:
- Data Set FlashCopy: Allows a FlashCopy of a data set in a zSeries
environment.
- Multiple Relationship FlashCopy: Allows a source to have FlashCopy
relationships with multiple targets simultaneously. This flexibility
allows you to initiate up to 12 FlashCopy establishes on a given logical
unit number (LUN), volume, or data set, without needing to first wait for
or cause previous relationships to end.
- Incremental FlashCopy: Provides the capability to "refresh" a LUN or
volume involved in a FlashCopy relationship. When a subsequent FlashCopy
establish is initiated, only the data required to bring the target
current to the source's newly established point-in-time is copied. The
direction of the "refresh" can also be reversed, in which case the LUN or
volume previously defined as the target becomes the source for the LUN or
volume previously defined as the source (and is now the target).
- FlashCopy To A Remote Mirror Primary: Lets you establish a FlashCopy
relationship where the target is also a remote mirror primary volume.
This enables you to create full or incremental point-in-time copies at a
local site and then use remote mirroring commands to copy the data to the
remote site.
- Consistency Group Commands: Allows DS8000 series systems to hold off
I/O activity to a LUN or volume until the FlashCopy Consistency Group
command is issued. Consistency groups can be used to help create a
consistent point-in-time copy across multiple LUNs or volumes, and even
across multiple DS8000s.
- Inband Commands Over Remote Mirror Link: In a remote mirror
environment, commands to manage FlashCopy at the remote site can be
issued from the local or intermediate site and transmitted over the
remote mirror Fibre Channel links. This eliminates the need for a
network connection to the remote site solely for the management of
FlashCopy.
FlashCopy is an optional feature of the DS8000 series, and is
available with the point in time indicator feature, #0720 and
corresponding DS8000 series function authorization (2244-PTC with
feature(s) #72xx).
Remote mirror and copy solutions
The DS8000 series supports several hardware-based remote mirror and
copy solutions:
- IBM TotalStorage Metro Mirror: This solution is designed to provide
real-time mirroring of logical volumes between two systems that can be
located up to 300 km from each other. It is a synchronous copy solution
where write operations are completed on both copies (local and remote
site) before they are considered to be done.
- IBM TotalStorage Global Copy: This is a non-synchronous long-
distance copy option for data migration and backup.
- IBM TotalStorage Global Mirror: Global Mirror is a long-distance
remote copy solution across two sites using asynchronous technology and
is designed to provide the following:
- Support for virtually unlimited distance between the local and remote
sites, with the distance typically limited only by the capabilities of
the network and channel extension technology being used. This can better
enable you to choose your remote site location based on business needs
and enables site separation to add protection from localized disasters.
- A consistent and restartable copy of the data at the remote site,
created with little impact to applications at the local site.
- Data currency where, for many environments, the remote site lags
behind the local site an average of 3 to 5 seconds, minimizing the amount
of data exposure in the event of an unplanned outage. The actual lag in
data currency experienced will depend upon a number of factors, including
specific workload characteristics and bandwidth between the local and
remote sites.
- Dynamic selection of the desired Recovery Point Objective (RPO) based
upon business requirements and optimization of available bandwidth.
- Session support whereby data consistency at the remote site is
internally managed across up to eight systems located across the local
and remote sites.
- Efficient synchronization of the local and remote sites with support
for failover and failback modes, helping to reduce the time required to
switch back to the local site after a planned or unplanned outage.
All of the above remote mirroring solutions use Fibre Channel as the
communications link between the primary and secondary machines. The
Fibre Channel ports used for remote mirror and copy can be configured as
either a dedicated remote mirror link or as a shared port between remote
mirroring and Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) data traffic.
The remote mirror and copy solutions listed above are optional
capabilities of the DS8000 series. They are available with the remote
mirror and copy indicator, feature #0740 and corresponding DS8000 series
function authorization (2244-RMC with feature(s) #74xx). The DS8000
series system can participate in remote mirror and copy solutions with
the ESS Model 750, ESS Model 800, and DS6000 series systems.
Remote mirror and copy solutions for z/OS
Following are two remote mirror and copy solutions for the z/OS
environment for the DS8000 series:
- IBM TotalStorage z/OS Global Mirror: This is a combined hardware and
software business continuance solution for the zSeries environment
providing asynchronous mirroring between systems at two sites located
global distances apart. z/OS Global Mirror is an optional capability of
the DS8000 series, and is available with the remote mirror for z/OS
indicator, feature #0760 and corresponding DS8000 series function
authorization (2244-RMZ with feature(s) #76xx).
- z/OS Metro/Global Mirror (3-site z/OS Global Mirror and Metro
Mirror): This mirroring capability utilizes z/OS Global Mirror to mirror
primary site data to a location that is a long distance away and also
uses Metro Mirror to mirror primary site data to a location within the
metropolitan area. This enables a 3-site high availability and disaster
recovery z/OS solution for even greater protection from unplanned
outages. z/OS Metro/Global Mirror is an optional capability of the
DS8000 series, and is available with the remote mirror for z/OS
indicator, feature #0760 and corresponding DS8000 series function
authorization (2244-RMZ with feature(s) #76xx) and the remote mirror and
copy indicator, feature #0740 and corresponding DS8000 series function
authorization (2244-RMC with feature(s) #74xx).
IBM performance innovations for the zSeries environments
The DS8000 series supports the following previously introduced IBM
performance innovations for zSeries environments.
FICON extends the ability of the DS8000 series system to deliver high
bandwidth potential to the logical volumes needing it, when they need it.
Older technologies are limited by the bandwidth of a single disk drive or
a single ESCON channel, but FICON, working together with other DS8000
series functions, provides a high-speed pipe supporting multiplexed
operation.
Parallel Access Volumes (PAV)
Enables a single zSeries server to simultaneously process multiple I/O
operations to the same logical volume, which can help to significantly
reduce device queue delays. This is achieved by defining multiple
addresses per volume. With Dynamic PAV, the assignment of addresses to
volumes can be automatically managed to help the workload meet its
performance objectives and reduce overall queuing. PAV is an optional
feature on the DS8000 series, available with the PAV indicator feature,
#0780 and corresponding DS8000 series function authorization (2244-PAV
with feature(s) #78xx).
Multiple Allegiance
Expands the simultaneous logical volume access capability across
multiple zSeries servers. This function, along with PAV, enables the
DS8000 series to process more I/Os in parallel, helping to improve
performance and enabling greater use of large volumes.
I/O priority queuing
Allows the DS8000 series to use I/O priority information provided by
the z/OS Workload Manager to manage the processing sequence of I/O
operations.
Licensing capabilities for copy functions to reduce costs
With the DS8000 series, new licensing options are available for users
of FlashCopy (point in time copy feature #0720) and remote mirror and
copy (feature #0740) as follows:
- If the function is used with open systems data only, a license is
required for only the total physical capacity configured as Fixed Block
(FB).
- If the function will be used with zSeries data only, a license is
required for only the total physical capacity configured as Count Key
Data (CKD).
- If the function is used with both open systems and zSeries data, a
license is required for the total physical capacity of the DS8000 series
system.
In addition, the license scope (FB, CKD, or entire machine) is client
managed through an IBM Web-based application. This allows you to change
the license scope on a given machine as your business requirements
change.
Management tools and utilities to improve administrator
productivity
The DS8000 series supports the following management tools and
utilities:
IBM TotalStorage Management Console for the DS8000
The Management Console is the focal point for configuration, copy
services management, and maintenance activities. The Management Console
is a dedicated workstation that is physically located (installed) inside
your DS8100 and DS8300 and can proactively monitor the state of your
system, notifying you and IBM when service is required. It can also be
connected to your network to enable centralized management of your system
using the IBM TotalStorage DS Command Line Interface or storage
management software utilizing the IBM TotalStorage DS Open API.
An external Management Console is available as a optional feature and
can be used as a redundant management console for environments with
high-availability requirements.
For environments with high-availability requirements and
multiple DS8000 series machines, cross-cabling between two
internal management consoles is supported. Each internal
management console can be used as a redundant management
console for the other.
IBM TotalStorage DS Storage Manager
The DS Storage Manager is a single integrated web-based (HTML)
graphical user interface (GUI) that offers:
- Offline configuration: Allows a user to create and save logical
configurations and apply them to an online DS8000 series system. This
offline configuration tool is installed on a customer server and can
be used for the configuration of a DS8000 series system at initial
installation.
- Online configuration: Provides real-time configuration management
support.
- Copy services: Allows a user to execute copy services functions.
The online configuration and copy services are available via a Web
browser interface installed on the DS management console. The DS Storage
Manager is provided with the DS8000 series at no additional charge.
IBM TotalStorage DS Command Line Interface (CLI)
The DS CLI is a single CLI that has the ability to perform a full set
of commands for both configuration and copy services activities. The
application will have three models of execution:
- Single shot mode will connect, issue a single command, and then
return to the user.
- Script mode will connect, execute a predefined customer script, and
then return to the user
- Interactive mode will place the user in a shell environment with a
static connection to the storage subsystem so the user can execute
multiple commands.
This CLI has the ability to dynamically invoke copy services
functions. This can help enhance your productivity since it
eliminates the previous requirement for you to create and save
a task using the GUI. The DS CLI can also issue copy services
commands to an ESS Model 750, ESS Model 800, or DS6000 series
system.
The DS CLI is available with the DS8000 series at no
additional charge. The DS CLI client is available for the
AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Novell NetWare, OS/400, Sun Solaris, and
Microsoft Windows operating system environments.
Note: The OS/400 client supports the management of copy service functions
only.)
IBM TotalStorage DS Open API
The DS Open API supports routine LUN management activities, such as
LUN creation, mapping and masking, and the management of point in time
copy and remote mirroring. It supports these activities through the use
of a standard interface as defined by the Storage Networking Industry
Association (SNIA) Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S).
The DS Open API is implemented through the IBM TotalStorage Common
Information Model Agent (CIM Agent) for the DS Open API, a middleware
application designed to provide a CIM-compliant interface. The interface
allows Tivoli and third-party CIM-compliant software management tools to
discover, monitor, and control DS8000 series systems. The DS Open API
and CIM Agent are provided with the DS8000 series at no additional
charge. The CIM Agent is available for the AIX, Linux, and Microsoft
Windows operating system environments.
IBM TotalStorage multi-path Subsystem Device Driver (SDD)
SDD provides load balancing and enhanced data availability capability
in configurations with more than one I/O path between the host server and
the DS8000 series system. Load balancing can help reduce or eliminate
I/O bottlenecks that occur when many I/O operations are directed to
common devices via the same I/O path. SDD also helps eliminate a
potential single point of failure by automatically rerouting I/O
operations when a path failure occurs, thereby supporting enhanced data
availability capability. SDD is provided with the DS8000 series at no

Technical Description

Overview
The IBM TotalStorage DS8000 is a series of disk storage devices. It
consists of three base unit models (IBM TotalStorage DS8100 Model 921,
IBM TotalStorage DS8300 Model 922, and IBM TotalStorage DS8300 Model
9A2), as well as, two expansion unit models (IBM TotalStorage DS8000
Models 92E and 9AE). The DS8000 series offers Fibre Channel, FICON, or
ESCON attachment to a variety of servers. Physical view
The physical configuration of the DS8000 series consists of the
following components:
- Base Unit: The base units (DS8100 Model 921, DS8300 Model 922, and
DS8300 Model 9A2) provide the rack and packaging that contain a dual
processor complex, host adapters, I/O enclosures, device adapters, power
supplies, batteries, and cooling, as well as space for up to eight drive
sets that contain 16 disk drives. The DS8300 Model 9A2 also contains
additional components to support multiple IBM TotalStorage Storage
Systems LPARs (Logical Partitions).
- Expansion Unit: The expansion units (DS8000 Models 92E and 9AE)
provide the rack and packaging for an additional 16 drive sets that
contain 16 disk drives. In certain configurations, the expansion units
can also contain additional host adapters, device adapters, and I/O
enclosures. They also contain their own set of power supplies,
batteries, and cooling.
- Host Adapters: Host adapters provide the I/O connections between the
DS8000 series and server/fabric components. Up to 16 ESCON or Fibre
Channel (SCSI-FCP and FICON host adapters) can be installed in any
combination in a DS8100 Model 921. Up to 32 ESCON or Fibre Channel
(SCSI-FCP and FICON) host adapters can be installed in a DS8300 system in
any combination (16 in the DS8300 base unit and another 16 in the first
DS8000 expansion unit). The ESCON adapters have two ports and the Fibre
Channel adapters have four ports. They are installed within I/O
enclosures and can communicate with both processor complexes.
- Storage Facility: A storage facility is composed of a storage server
and two or more storage enclosures that are packaged in one or more racks
with associated power supplies, batteries, and cooling.
- Storage Server: A storage server is composed of two processor
complexes, two or more I/O enclosures, and a pair of Rack Power Control
(RPC) cards.
- Processor Complex: A processor complex controls and manages the
storage facility to perform the function of a storage server. The two
processor complexes form a redundant pair and execute Licensed Machine
Code (LMC) to manage and control the operations and licensed function of
the DS8000 series. The processor complex also has Ethernet connections
to allow management functions to be invoked over a network.
Sub-components in a processor complex include:
- Processor: The processor complex contains one or more processors
that share a common address space. In a DS8300 Model 9A2, each of the
two Storage System LPARs has access to 50 percent of the processors.
- Processor Memory: The memory on a processor complex is used to store
instructions and data for the processors or is used to store data that is
transferred between processor complex memory and I/O adapters within the
configuration. Some of the processor memory is used as Nonvolatile
Storage (NVS) to store a second copy of write data to help protect
against loss of data in the event of a processor or power failure. In
addition, some of the processor memory is used for hardware caching to
help improve the performance of the processor complex. The DS8100
supports up to 128 GB of processor memory and the DS8300 Model 922 and
9A2 support up to 256 GB of processor memory. In a DS8300 Model 9A2,
each of the two Storage System LPARs has access to 50 percent of the
processor memory.
- I/O enclosures: An I/O enclosure provides a way to interconnect one
or more external I/O adapters to the processor complex I/O interface.
The I/O enclosure supports the following types of external I/O adapters:
- Host Adapters: A host adapter supports the attachment of host
systems to the storage facility Device Adapters. In a DS8300 Model 9A2,
each of the two Storage System LPARs has access to a maximum of 50
percent of the installed host adapters.
- Device Adapters: A device adapter supports the attachment of storage
devices to the storage facility through one or more I/O ports. The
attachment is a Fibre Channel arbitrated loop (FC-AL). Each DS8100
system can have up to four device adapter pairs and each DS8300 system
can have up to eight device adapter pairs.
- Storage enclosure: A storage enclosure provides a way to
interconnect one or more external storage devices to the I/O interface
attached to a device adapter I/O port. Each storage enclosure contains a
redundant pair of storage enclosure services cards.
- Disk Drives: The disk drives provide storage capacity for
the DS8000. Disk drives are installed in disk enclosure pairs,
in a disk install group of 16 identical drives of the same type
(capacity and rpm). Drive sets are available with 73 GB
(15K rpm), 146 GB (10K rpm and 15K), and 300 GB (10K rpm)
drives. In a DS8300 Model 9A2, each of the two Storage System
LPARs has access to a maximum of 50 percent of the installed disk drives.
Logical View
To servers, the DS8000 series appears to be a set of disk volumes that
can be configured to emulate disk device types that are compatible with
the attaching servers.
The storage capacity of the DS8000 series is logically divided into
groups of eight physical disk drives that are each configured as either a
RAID-5 or RAID-10 array. The array is logically formatted to support
either:
- Count-key data (3380 or 3390 track format)
- Fixed-block data (either 512 or 520 byte logical blocks)
Once formatted, the arrays are then subdivided allocatable storage
units that can be allocated to individual volumes or LUNs that can be
assigned to the various attached servers.
The DS8100 and DS8300 logical configuration is created and managed
using the IBM TotalStorage DS Storage Manager, IBM TotalStorage DS
Command Line Interface (CLI), or IBM TotalStorage DS Open API.

Refer to the Installation and Planning Guide.
- The amount of physical capacity within the 2107 system that can be
logically configured for use will be enforced by the 2107 Licensed
Machine Code to maintain compliance with the extent of IBM authorization
established for licensed functions activated on the machine. The 2107
Licensed Machine Code will not allow the logical configuration of
physical capacity beyond the extent of IBM authorization (except when
activating Standby CoD capacity).
- The deactivation of an activated licensed function, or a lateral
change or reduction in the license scope is a disruptive activity and
requires a machine IML (Model 921 and Model 922) or reboot of the
affected Storage System LPAR (Model 9A2).
- Reconfiguration activity with the offline configuration tool is
not supported.
- The following activities are disruptive:
- Model conversions. In addition, data may not be preserved during the
model conversion.
- Field attachment of a Model 92E with the 922 - 92E Position 1
indicator (feature number 0221) to a Model 922.
- Field attachment of a Model 9AE with the 9A2 - 9AE Position 1
indicator (feature number 0231) to a Model 9A2.
- Removal of an expansion unit model from the base unit model. Data
may not be preserved during this activity.
Licensed Machine Code
The DS8000 series Models 921, 922, 92E, 9A2, and 9AE require Licensed
Machine Code (LMC) level 5.0.0, or later.
DS8000 series LMC level 5.0.3 or later is required for the

Licensed functions require the selection of a DS8000 series feature
number (IBM 2107) and the purchase of DS8000 Series Function
Authorization (IBM 2244) feature numbers:
- The 2107 licensed function indicator feature number enables the
technical activation of the function subject to the client applying a
feature activation code made available by IBM.
- The 2244 function authorization feature numbers establish the extent
of authorization for that function on the 2107 machine for which it was
acquired.

Operating environment
An operating environment license is required on every 2107 base unit
(Models 921, 922, and 9A2). The extent of IBM authorization acquired
through the 2244 Model OEL feature numbers must cover the physical
capacity of the 2107 system, where system is defined as the base unit and
all physically attached expansion units (excluding Standby CoD capacity).
If the operating environment license has not been acquired and
activated on the machine, disk drives installed within the 2107 system
cannot be logically configured for use. Upon activation of the operating
environment, disk drives can be logically configured up to the extent of
IBM authorization.
As additional disk drives are installed, the extent of IBM
authorization must be increased by acquiring additional 2244 Model OEL
feature numbers. Otherwise, the additional disk drives cannot be
logically configured for use.
For a 2107 system with Standby CoD disk drives (#2xx7 features),
activation (logical configuration) of CoD disk drives may exceed the
extent of IBM authorization for the operating environment, in which case
an increased authorization level must be acquired.
Remote mirror and copy
To use remote mirror and copy, the remote mirror and copy function
authorization (2244 Model RMC) must be purchased for both the primary and
secondary 2107.
Remote mirror and copy requires the installation of at least one Fibre
Channel/FICON host adapter on each 2107 system in the remote mirror and
copy configuration to serve as the remote mirror and copy communications
link. For higher availability, IBM recommends that more than one host
adapter per system be used for the remote mirror and copy connectivity.
Remote mirror and copy is supported with the use of SAN fabric
products, channel extenders, and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(DWDM) products. A current list of supported environments,

Vendors should be consulted regarding hardware and software
prerequisites when using their products in a remote mirror and copy
configuration. IBM is not responsible for third-party products.
IBM supports the use of remote mirror and copy over the network
technologies that are currently supported by the channel extender
products, including Fibre Channel, Ethernet/IP, ATM-OC3, and T1/T3.
Evaluation, qualification, approval, and support of remote mirror and
copy configurations using channel extender products are the sole
responsibility of the channel extender vendor. The vendor should be
contacted for its distance capability, line quality requirements, as well
as SAN and WAN attachment capabilities.
Global Mirror
Global Mirror has the following, additional prerequisites:
- A point in time copy function authorization (2244 Model PTC) must be
purchased for the secondary 2107.
- If Global Mirror will be used during failback on the secondary
system, a point in time copy function authorization must also be
purchased on the primary system.
In the event of a planned or unplanned outage, recovery procedures are
required to achieve a consistent and restartable copy of the data at the
remote site. Scripts and software can be used to help automate these
procedures.
Remote mirror for z/OS
When failback from the secondary 2107 to the primary 2107 is required,
the remote mirror for z/OS function authorization (2244 Model RMZ) must
be purchased for both systems.
Remote mirror for z/OS is supported with the use of channel extenders
and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) products. A current
list of supported environments, configurations, network connectivity, and

This feature provides a battery assembly to power the machine when the
external power source is lost.
It is a required feature when feature #1300 or #1055 is present.

This feature provides two disk enclosures. A disk enclosure pair
supports up to 32 disk drives.
Every disk enclosure pair must be populated with either 16 or 32 disk
drives (features #2xx6 and/or #2xx7). If a disk enclosure pair is
populated with only 16 disk drives, it must be populated with one disk
enclosure filler set (feature #2999).
When this feature is ordered on the first Model 9xE within a system,
the maximum allowed quantity of this feature must be present on the base
enclosure model.
When this feature is ordered on the second Model 9xE within a system,
the maximum allowed quantity of this feature must also be present on the
first Model 9xE.
- Minimum required: None, except:
- Four #1220 features are required on the first attached Model 9AE
(identified using feature #0231) when feature #1220 is present on the
second attached Model 9AE (identified using feature #0232).
- Four #1230 features are required on the first attached Model 9AE
(identified using feature #0231) when feature #1230 is present on the
second attached Model 9AE (identified using feature #0232).

These optional features provide one Fibre Channel cable to connect a

Each cable has an LC connector for attachment to the Fibre

The 50 micron cables (#141x features) are compatible with:
- Short-wave Fibre Channel/FICON host adapters (feature #3111, #3121,
and #3131).
- Long-wave Fibre Channel/FICON adapters (feature #3211, #3221, and
#3231) only when the adapter is operating at a 1Gb per second transfer
rate.
The 9 micron cables (#142x features) are compatible with:
- Long-wave Fibre Channel/FICON adapters (feature #3211, #3221, and

Feature #1412 and #1422 provide a "pigtail" conversion cable that can
be used to attach the Fibre Channel/FICON adapter port to a cable with an

These features provide a set of 16 CoD disk drives.
Disk drives are installed in an disk enclosure pair (eight drives in

Every disk enclosure pair must be populated with either two disk drive
sets (features #2xx6 and/or #2xx7) or a combination of one disk drive set
and one disk enclosure filler set (feature #2999). If a disk enclosure
pair is populated with feature #2999, the feature must be removed as
feature #2xx6 or feature #2xx7 is added.
Activated CoD disk drives are purchased using a "feature exchange"
transaction, resulting in the removal of the #2xx7 feature and the
addition of the corresponding #2xx6 feature of the same capacity and
speed. The transaction is invoiced at the differential price between the
features removed and added.
For each type of #2xx7 feature installed, #2xx6 feature of the same
type (capacity and speed) cannot be ordered without first purchasing the
#2xx7 feature using the "feature exchange" transaction described above.
Note: that if the client wants to continue to have CoD disk drives
installed in their machine, one or more replacement #2xx7 features should
be purchased instead of #2xx6 features.
When purchasing Standby CoD disk drives, agreements must be signed by
the client prior to the acquisition of their first DS8000 configured with
#2xx7 features. See the #090x features (Standby CoD Indicators) for
additional information.
Once the required agreements have been executed, each subsequent order
of #2xx7 features requires only that the client sign an additional IBM
Supplement for DS8000 Standby Capacity on Demand.
- Minimum required: None.
- Maximum allowed: Four, subject to the following:
- One #2xx7 feature requires a minimum quantity of two #2xx6 features.
- Two #2xx7 features requires a minimum quantity of four #2xx6
features.

This feature provides two device adapters. Device adapters are
installed in an I/O enclosure pair (one device adapter in each I/O
enclosure). An I/O enclosure pair can support up to two device adapter
pairs.
The required quantity of this feature is based upon the number of disk
enclosure pair features present within the system (e.g., base unit model
and all attached expansion unit models).
To determine the required quantity of feature #3021:
- Divide the total quantity of #1220 disk enclosure pair features by
two.
- Round this value up to the next whole number.
To determine the required quantity of feature #3031:
- Divide the total quantity of #1230 disk enclosure pair features by
two (2).
- Round this value up to the next whole number.
The resulting numbers represent the required quantity, until the
maximum allowed quantity for feature is reached.
The addition of a #12x0 feature into a given model may require the
addition of #301x features into a different model within the system (than
the model that the #12x0 features are being added to).

These features provide one two-port ESCON host adapter. Host adapters
are installed in an I/O enclosure. An I/O enclosure pair can support up
to eight host adapters. For higher availability, it is recommended that

machine.
This 64-bit adapter supports two ESCON links. Each port utilizes a
Light Emitting Diode (LED) as the optical transceiver. Cables for
connecting the ports to a server or fabric port can be purchased using
the #143x and #144x features. This feature supports use of 62.5 micron
multimode fiber optic cable terminated with a small form factor, industry
standard MT-RJ connector.
Feature conversions are available to exchange installed adapters when
purchasing new adapters of a different type. The conversions are a
returned parts MES.
