Abstract

The IBM 2105 is the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (ESS).

Model Abstract 2105-800

The IBM 2105 TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) Model 800, the third generation of IBM intelligent storage, sets yet another milestone in ESS functionality, flexibility, performance, and overall value available to meet today's storage requirements. As demands for data increase, so must storage capacity, and accessibility from heterogeneous server environments. As business transaction volumes increase, storage throughput and response time must scale to meet increasingly demanding quality of service agreements. As SANs migrate to 2 Gigabit (2Gb) technology, storage should be able to exploit this bandwidth. As faster disk drive technology, spinning at 15,000 rpm, and combinations of RAID technology are brought to the marketplace, storage administrators need to be able to configure solutions that best meet business needs. The ESS Model 800 is designed to address all these requirements while helping to protect investments you have already made in servers, SANs, software, storage hardware, and advanced functions. The Model 800 is designed to provide performance, scalability, and flexibility while supporting 24 x 7 operations to help provide the access and protection demanded by today's business environment, and delivering the flexibility and centralized management needed to lower long-term costs.

The Model 800 integrates a new generation of hardware, including faster symmetrical multi-processors (SMP) with an optional Turbo feature, 64 GB cache, double internal bandwidth, and 2Gb Fibre Channel/FICON Host Adapters. This hardware, in addition to RAID 10 support and 15,000 rpm drives, enables the Model 800 to deliver excellent levels of performance and throughput.

The Model 800 integrates a new generation of hardware, yet builds on the functionality, stability, reliability, and proven track record of the earlier ESS models. The Model 800 provides storage consolidation to support your growing, performance-demanding applications with:

The ESS Model 800 - The Third Generation of IBM Intelligent Storage

The ESS Model 800 is the third generation of the ESS and builds upon the functionality, stability, reliability, and proven track record of the earlier models.

The Model 800 integrates a new generation of hardware, including a standard processor (with an optional Turbo and Turbo II feature), 64 GB cache, 2 GB Non Volatile Storage (NVS), increased internal bandwidth, and 2Gb Fibre Channel/FICON Host Adapters. This hardware, when combined with RAID 10 support and 15,000 rpm drives, enables the Model 800 to deliver excellent levels of performance and throughput.

The Model 800 supports up to 55.9 TB of physical capacity that can be configured as RAID 5, RAID 10, or a combination of both. RAID 5 remains a price/performance leader, offering excellent performance for most customer applications, while RAID 10 can offer better performance for selected applications. Price, performance, and capacity can further be optimized to meet specific application and business requirements through the intermix of 18.2, 36.4, 72.8, and 145.6 GB drives operating at 10,000 or 15,000 rpm.

Yet with all this, the fundamental design of the ESS remains unchanged. The Model 800 supports 24 x 7 operations with a design that avoids single points of failure by providing component redundancy. The Model 800 also maintains the advanced functions that deliver business continuance solutions (FlashCopy, FlashCopy Version 2, PPRC, PPRC Version 2, PPRC Extended Distance, and XRC), as well as FICON, Parallel Access Volumes (PAV), multiple allegiance, and I/O priority queuing to offer great performance in the zSeries and S/390 environments.

The Model 800 Delivers Excellent Levels of Performance and Throughput

The Model 800 provides significantly increased throughput and improved response times relative to the Model F20. The Model 800 delivers up to 2 times the throughput of the Model F20, and with the optional Turbo processor feature, up to 2.5 times the throughput of the Model F20 can be achieved. This allows you to scale the Model 800 to twice as large as the Model F20 -- and still achieve better response times!

The Model 800 also provides a Turbo II Processor option, a follow-on replacement to the Turbo Processor. The Turbo II Processor offers up to a 30% improvement for high-hit ratio and high operations per second workloads as compared to the Standard Processor in a Model 800. Processor option feature conversions are available to enable existing Model 800 machines to exploit this enhancement.

In addition to the response time and scalability improvements provided for database workloads, the Model 800 also offers significant improvements for applications requiring high sequential bandwidth. When combined with other IBM performance innovations such as FICON, PAV, and I/O priority queueing, batch job elapsed times can be decreased by 50% or more. And, improvements in per fibre port throughput and total box throughput can help enable the consolidation of data from digital media, business intelligence, data warehousing, and life sciences applications into fewer systems.

Key features and performance enhancements of the Model 800 include:

  • Updated hardware provides response time improvements up to 40% for important database applications

  • Optional Turbo II processor feature provides up to a 30% improvement for high-hit ratios and high operations per second workloads compared to the Standard Processor.

  • Optional Turbo processor feature provides up to 2.5 times the throughput of the Model F20 for increased scalability and improved response times.

  • 64 GB cache supports much larger system configurations and increases hit ratios, driving down response times.

  • 3.2 GB/second internal bandwidth provides high sequential throughput for digital media, business intelligence, data warehousing, and life sciences applications.

  • Larger NVS with twice the bandwidth allows greater scalability for write-intensive applications.

  • 2Gb/second Fibre Channel/FICON host adapters provide doubled per-fibre sustained and instantaneous throughput for both open systems and zSeries environments.

  • RAID 10 provides up to 75% greater throughput for database workloads compared to equal physical capacity configured as RAID 5. While most typical workloads will experience excellent response times with RAID 5, cache-unfriendly applications and applications with high random write content can benefit from the performance offered by RAID 10.

  • 15,000 rpm drives provide up to 80% greater throughput per RAID rank and 40% improved response times as compared to 10,000 rpm drives. This allows you to drive your workloads to significantly higher access densities, while also experiencing improved response times.

  • With up to 125% greater write throughput, PPRC provides excellent response times for a synchronous remote copy solution with random workloads. Additionally, FlashCopy establish and elapsed background copy times can be reduced by up to 50%.

  • Ability to configure large zSeries logical volumes and large LUNs without materially compromising performance.

15,000 rpm Drives Offer Additional Levels of Throughput and Performance

The 15,000 rpm drives, which are available in 18.2, 36.4, and 72.8 GB capacities, offer levels of throughput and performance that can translate into price/performance benefits for the entire system.

  • An ESS populated with eight RAID 5 ranks of 18.2 or 36.4 GB, 15,000 rpm drives can provide up to 80% greater total system random throughput for a cache standard workload than a comparably configured ESS with 10,000 rpm drives.

  • The 72.8 GB, 15,000 rpm drives can provide up to 20% greater random throughput than a comparably configured ESS with 10,000 rpm drives.

  • An ESS populated with eight RAID 5 ranks of 72.8 GB, 15,000 rpm drives can provide up to 25% better service time for a cache standard workload than a similarly configured ESS with comparable capacity consisting of 16 ranks of 36 GB, 10,000 rpm drives.

These drives can help you drive your workloads at significantly higher access densities (without performance degradation) and fewer disk drives may be required to achieve high disk utilization rates, which can lead to cost savings. Reduced response times may also be realized, providing shorter batch processing windows or improved productivity because transactions complete more quickly.

Extensive Connectivity with 2Gb Fibre Channel/FICON Support For Higher Performance SANs

The Model 800 follows in the footsteps of the earlier ESS models with extensive connectivity support -- including Fibre Channel, FICON, ESCON, SCSI, iSCSI, and NAS -- across a broad range of server environments -- including zSeries and S/390, pSeries and RS/6000, iSeries and AS/400, xSeries and other Intel-based servers, Sun, Hewlett-Packard, and Compaq AlphaServer. This rich support of heterogeneous environments and attachments, along with the flexibility to easily partition the ESS storage capacity among the attached environments in any combination using the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Specialist (ESS Specialist), helps support storage consolidation requirements and dynamic, changing environments.

The Model 800 further enhances this broad set of connectivity options with support for 2Gb Fibre Channel and FICON. The 2Gb Fibre Channel/FICON Host Adapters, which are offered in long-wave and short-wave, auto-negotiate to either 2Gb or 1Gb link speeds. The flexibility enables immediate exploitation of the benefits offered by higher performance, 2Gb SAN-based solutions, while also maintaining compatibility with existing 1Gb infrastructures. As 2Gb capability on servers and fabric components is introduced into existing SANs, your investment in ESS fibre adapters is protected and migration is simplified.

IBM TotalStorage Resiliency Family

The IBM Total Storage Resiliency Family is comprised of IBM TotalStorage Resiliency Core Technology, an extensive set of hardware and software features and products, and IBM TotalStorage Resiliency Automation, integrated software and services packages. The IBM TotalStorage Resiliency Family is designed to help you implement storage infrastructures to help keep your business running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The following ESS Model 800 functions are key components of the IBM TotalStorage Resiliency Core Technology:

  • FlashCopy

  • PPRC:
    • PPRC Metro Mirror (Synchronous PPRC)
    • PPRC Global Mirror (Asynchronous PPRC)
    • PPRC Metro/Global Copy (Asynchronous Cascading PPRC)
    • PPRC Global Copy (PPRC Extended Distance)

  • Extended Remote Copy (XRC)
    • zSeries Global Mirror (XRC)
    • zSeries Metro/Global Mirror (three-site solution using Synchronous PPRC and XRC)

FlashCopy: FlashCopy is designed to provide a point-in-time copy capability for logical volumes. FlashCopy creates a physical point-in-time copy of the data, with minimal interruption to applications, and makes it possible to access both the source and target copies immediately. FlashCopy is an optional feature for the ESS (feature numbers 83xx).

FlashCopy Version 2 further supports business continuance solutions with the following additional functions:

  • Data Set FlashCopy
  • Multiple Relationship FlashCopy
  • Incremental FlashCopy
  • FlashCopy to a PPRC primary
  • Additional enhancements:
  • Elimination of the Logical Subsystem (LSS) constraint
  • Establish time improvement
  • Consistency group commands
  • Inband commands over PPRC link

Data Set FlashCopy allows you to perform a FlashCopy of a data set in zSeries and S/390 environments. This level of granularity allows for more efficient use of your ESS capacity and can also help reduce the background copy completion time since a FlashCopy no longer needs to be performed at a volume level when a copy of selected data sets within a volume is required. As with FlashCopy at the volume level, Data Set FlashCopy is fully supported by z/OS Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem (DFSMS).

With Multiple Relationship FlashCopy, a source can have FlashCopy relationships with multiple targets simultaneously. This flexibility allows you to initiate up to 12 FlashCopy establishes on a given logical unit number (LUN), volume, or data set, without needing to first wait for or cause previous relationships to end.

Incremental FlashCopy provides the capability to "refresh" a LUN or volume involved in a FlashCopy relationship. When a subsequent FlashCopy establish is initiated, only the data required to bring the target current to the source's newly established point-in-time is copied. The direction of the "refresh" can also be reversed, in which case the LUN or volume previously defined as the target becomes the source for the LUN or volume previously defined as the source (and is now the target). Incremental FlashCopy can help reduce the background copy completion time when only a subset of data on either the source or target has changed, giving you the option to perform a FlashCopy on a more frequent basis. Additionally, if no updates were made to the target since the last "refresh", the direction change could be used to "restore" the source back to the previous point-in-time state.

FlashCopy to a PPRC primary lets you establish a FlashCopy relationship where the FlashCopy target is also a PPRC primary volume. This enables you to create full or incremental point-in-time copies at a local site and then use PPRC to copy the data to the remote site.

Additional enhancements:

  • Elimination of the LSS constraint: A FlashCopy source and target relationship can span logical subsystems within an ESS. This flexibility can help simplify administration and capacity planning for FlashCopy.

  • Establish time improvement: Performance improvements in FlashCopy Version 2 are designed to provide up to a 10 times reduction in the time required to complete a FlashCopy establish command (as compared to FlashCopy). With this significant reduction in establish time, operational interruption can be further minimized and the benefits of FlashCopy can be extended into new application environments.

  • Consistency group commands: Commands are available to facilitate the creation of FlashCopy consistency groups. With the FlashCopy Consistency Group command, the ESS will hold off I/O activity to a LUN or volume until the Flash Copy Consistency Group Created command is issued. Consistency groups can be used to help create a consistent point-in-time copy across multiple LUNs or volumes, and even across multiple ESSs.

  • Inband commands over PPRC link: In a PPRC environment, commands to manage FlashCopy at the remote site can be issued from the local or intermediate site and transmitted over the PPRC links. This eliminates the need for a network connection to the remote site solely for the management of FlashCopy.

FlashCopy Version 2 is an optional feature to the ESS (feature numbers 86xx). In addition to supporting the functions listed above, FlashCopy Version 2 includes support for all functions offered with FlashCopy (feature numbers 83xx).

Peer to Peer Remote Copy (PPRC): PPRC is designed to offer hardware-based remote copy solutions. Synchronous PPRC (PPRC Metro Mirror) is designed to provide real-time mirroring of logical volumes between two ESSs that can be located up to 103 km from each other when using ESCON communication links and up to 300 km when using Fibre Channel communication links. It is a synchronous copy solution where write operations are completed on both copies (local and remote site) before they are considered to be done. PPRC also includes PPRC Extended Distance (PPRC Global Copy), a non-synchronous long-distance copy option for data migration and backup. PPRC is an optional feature to the ESS (feature numbers 82xx).

PPRC Version 2 further supports business continuance solutions with following additional functions:

  • PPRC over Fibre Channel links
  • Asynchronous PPRC (PPRC Global Mirror)
  • Asynchronous Cascading PPRC (PPRC Metro/Global Copy)

PPRC over Fibre Channel links enables the use of Fibre Channel as the communications link between the PPRC primary and PPRC secondary machines. Compared to PPRC over ESCON links, PPRC over Fibre Channel allows a reduction in PPRC link infrastructure, while delivering equivalent or better performance. PPRC communication to the secondary control unit, via Fibre Channel, provides for a much faster interface compared to ESCON, particularly at long distances. Within a single machine, you can run PPRC over both Fibre Channel and ESCON links, although the link type cannot be mixed within the same LSS. The Fibre Channel ports used for PPRC can be configured as either a dedicated PPRC link or as a shared port between PPRC and Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) data traffic.

PPRC Global Mirror is designed to provides a long-distance remote copy solution across two sites using asynchronous technology. It operates over high-speed, Fibre Channel communication links and is designed to provide the following:

  • Support for virtually unlimited distance between the local and remote sites, with the distance typically limited only by the capabilities of the network and channel extension technologies. This can better enable you to choose your remote site location based on business needs and enables site separation to add protection from localized disasters.

  • A consistent and restartable copy of the data at the remote site, created with minimal impact to applications at the local site. Compared to Asynchronous Cascading PPRC (PPRC Metro/Global Copy), PPRC Global Mirror eliminates the requirement to do a manual and periodic suspend at the local site order to create a consistent and restartable copy at the remote site.

  • Data currency where, for many environments, the remote site lags behind the local site an average of 3 to 5 seconds, minimizing the amount of data exposure in the event of an unplanned outage. Data currency is also known as the recovery point objective (RPO). The actual lag in data currency experienced will depend upon a number of factors, including specific workload characteristics and bandwidth between the local and remote sites.

  • Dynamic selection of the desired RPO based upon business requirements and optimization of available bandwidth.

  • Session support whereby data consistency at the remote site is internally managed across up to eight ESS machines located among the local and remote sites.

  • Efficient synchronization of the local and remote sites with support for PPRC failover and failback modes, helping to reduce the time required to switch back to the local site after a planned or unplanned outage.

PPRC Metro/Global Copy is designed to provide a long-distance remote copy solution across three sites using a combination of PPRC Metro Mirror and PPRC Global Copy. In a three-site configuration, the PPRC Metro Mirror is maintained between an ESS at the local site and an ESS at an intermediate site, while a PPRC Global Copy relationship is simultaneously maintained between the ESS at the intermediate site and an ESS at the remote site. When used with specific operational procedures, this can be designed to provide a data protection solution in the event of an unplanned outage at any one of the three sites. Alternatively, operational procedures, including the creation of a "safety copy" at the remote site using FlashCopy, can be used to design a solution that provides a consistent copy of the data at the remote site in the event of a regional outage affecting both the local and intermediate site.

PPRC Version 2 is an optional feature to the ESS (feature numbers 85xx). In addition to supporting the functions listed above, PPRC Version 2 also includes support for all functions offered with PPRC (feature numbers 82xx).

Extended Remote Copy (XRC): XRC (zSeries Global Mirror) is a combined hardware and software business continuance solution for the zSeries and S/390 environments providing asynchronous mirroring between two ESSs at global distances. XRC is an optional feature on the ESS (feature numbers 81xx).

FICON Extends the Performance Benefits of the Model 800

FICON extends the ESS's ability to deliver high bandwidth potential to the logical volumes needing it, when they need it. Older technologies are limited by the bandwidth of a single disk drive or a single ESCON channel, but FICON, working together with other ESS functions, provides a high-speed pipe with multiplexed operation.

New with the Model 800 is an increase in the number of logical paths supported per control unit image (to 256 paths). This increases the number of logical paths for FICON to 4,096 per ESS.

FICON offers increased per channel bandwidth that supports significant improvements in single stream sequential throughput (as much as two times as compared to ESCON). As a result, elapsed time for batch, data mining, or dump operations can be substantially improved, providing potential relief for customers whose batch or file maintenance windows are constrained.

The data rate offered by FICON during the data transfer portion of response time is more than five times faster than ESCON, which can help improve response time and reduce connect time. The larger the transfer, the greater the typical reduction as a percentage of the total I/O response time. FICON can also help reduce or eliminate the pend time caused by busy director ports. For customers whose ESCON directors are experiencing as much as 45-50% busy conditions, this can provide significant response time reduction.

Whereas ESCON channels can process only one operation at a time, FICON channels can process multiple concurrent data transfers. When used with Parallel Access Volumes (PAV), FICON and PAV work together to allow multiple data transfers to the same volume at the same time over the same channel, providing greater parallelism and bandwidth that can better exploit the maximum bandwidth of the ESS arrays. Another performance advantage offered by FICON is that the ESS accepts multiple channel command words (CCWs) concurrently without waiting for completion of the previous CCW.

Finally, significant performance advantages can be realized by those customers who access their disk systems remotely. FICON helps reduce or eliminate data rate "droop" for distances up to 100 km for both read and write operations by using enhanced data buffering and pacing schemes.

FICON also provides greater simplicity for the channel fabric. With support for more devices per channel (up to 16,384) and more logical subsystems per channel to match the increased channel bandwidth, ESCON channels can be consolidated into FICON channels at the rate of approximately 4:1. A well-configured ESS will typically need no more than eight FICON channel interfaces in order to exploit the bandwidth.

IBM Performance Innovations for the zSeries and S/390 Environments

The Model 800 supports the following previously introduced IBM performance innovations for the zSeries and S/390 environments.

PAV - Enables a single zSeries or S/390 server to simultaneously process multiple I/O operations to the same logical volume, helping to significantly reduce device queue delays. This is achieved by defining multiple addresses per volume. With Dynamic PAV, the assignment of addresses to volumes can be automatically managed to help the workload meet its performance objectives and minimize overall queuing. PAV is an optional feature on the ESS.

Multiple Allegiance - Expands the simultaneous logical volume access capability across multiple zSeries or S/390 servers. This function, along with PAV, enables the ESS to process more I/Os in parallel, helping to improve performance and enabling greater use of large volumes.

I/O Priority Queuing - Allows the ESS to use I/O priority information provided by the z/OS or OS/390 Workload Manager to manage the processing sequence of I/O operations.

Flexibility Capacity Option Provides Vast Number of Configurations

Physical capacity for the Model 800 is purchased via pairs of disk eight-packs. A disk eight-pack contains eight disk drives, all which are of the same capacity (either 18.2, 36.4, 72.8, or 145.6 GB) and rpm (10,000 or 15,000).

The Model 800 supports the intermix of 18.2, 36.4, 72.8 and 145.6 GB drives and the intermix of 10,000 rpm and 15,000 rpm drives. With intermix support, a vast number of configuration options are available so price, performance, and capacity can be optimized to meet specific application or business requirements.

For additional flexibility, feature conversions are available to exchange existing disk eight-packs when purchasing new disk eight-packs with higher capacity or higher rpm disk drives.

The Model 800 also supports the ability to purchase an empty Expansion Enclosure, which can be populated with disk eight-packs at a later date.

IBM Standby Capacity on Demand for ESS Delivers Storage on Demand (Standby CoD)

IBM Standby Capacity On Demand for ESS (Standby CoD) provides "standby" storage for the ESS and allows you to access the extra storage capacity whenever the need arises. With Standby CoD, IBM will install up to six Standby CoD Disk Eight-Packs in your ESS for a nominal charge. At any time, you can logically configure your Standby CoD for use -- a nondisruptive activity that does not require intervention from IBM. Upon logical configuration, you will be charged for the capacity.

Standby CoD replaces A Step Ahead and includes the following enhancements:

  • An ESS can have up to six Standby CoD Disk Eight-Packs.

  • Standby CoD Disk Eight-Packs can be installed as a field upgrade into an existing Model 800.

  • The Standby CoD Disk Eight-Pack convenience charge and annual renewal charge have been reduced.

IBM offers capacity on demand solutions that are designed to meet the changing storage needs of rapidly growing e-businesses. Standby CoD is designed to provide you with the ability to tap into additional ESS storage and is particularly attractive if you have rapid or unpredictable growth, or if you simply want the knowledge that the storage will be there when you need it.

Management tools and utilities improve administrator productivity: The Model 800 supports the following management tools and utilities.

IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Master Console (ESS Master Console) Provides Single Point of Control: The Model 800 utilizes the Enterprise Storage Server Network (ESSNet), a dedicated LAN, to support configuration, copy services communications between machines, call home, and remote support capabilities. At the center of the ESSNet is the ESS Master Console, which serves as a single point of control for up to seven ESSs. Multiple ESSNets can also be interconnected and even connected into an enterprise WAN to enable control of the ESSs from a central location, regardless of where the machines may be located.

IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Specialist (ESS Specialist): The ESS Specialist is a Web-based tool for performing logical configuration and copy services (PPRC and FlashCopy) management functions. The ESS Specialist is accessed via Web browser installed on the ESS Master Console and can be accessed from other locations throughout the enterprise if the ESSNet is connected into the enterprise network. The ESS Specialist is provided with the ESS, at no additional charge.

IBM TotalStorage Multiple Device Manager (MDM): MDM provides centralized volume management, performance management, and replication management for the ESS. MDM is an optional software product.

IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Expert (ESS Expert): The ESS Expert provides comprehensive asset, capacity, and performance management information for the ESS. The ESS Expert is an optional software product.

ESS Command Line Interface (ESS CLI): The ESS CLI provides an alternate method to perform ESS logical configuration and storage management functions. With the ESS CLI, routine configuration and management tasks can be automated through their incorporation into scripts and applications, helping to simplify ESS administration and thereby reducing the total cost of ownership. The ESS CLI is provided with the ESS at no additional charge. The ESS CLI client is available for the AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows 2000 operating system environments.

Copy Services Command Line Interface (Copy Services CLI): The Copy Services CLI enables open systems hosts to invoke and manage FlashCopy and PPRC functions through batch processes and scripts. It provides commands to query the status of ESS volumes and to execute copy services tasks that were previously created using the ESS Specialist. The Copy Services CLI is provided with the ESS at no additional charge. The Copy Services CLI client is available for the AIX, Dynix/ptx, HP-UX, NetWare, Solaris, Tru64 UNIX, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 environments.

ESS Application Programming Interface (ESS API): The ESS API supports routine LUN management activities, such as LUN creation, mapping, masking, and the management of FlashCopy and PPRC. It supports these activities through the use of a standard interface as defined by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S). The ESS API is implemented through the IBM TotalStorage Common Information Model Agent (CIM Agent) for the ESS, a middleware application designed to provide a CIM-compliant interface. The interface allows Tivoli and third-party software management tools to discover, monitor, and control the ESS. The ESS API and CIM Agent are provided with the ESS at no additional charge. The CIM Agent is available for the AIX, Linux, and Windows 2000 operating system environments.

Subsystem Device Driver (SDD): SDD provides load balancing and enhanced data availability capability in configurations with more than one I/O path between the host server and the ESS. Load balancing can help reduce or eliminate I/O bottlenecks that occur when many I/O operations are directed to common devices via the same I/O path. SDD also helps eliminate a potential single point of failure by automatically rerouting I/O operations when a path failure occurs, thereby supporting enhanced data availability capability. SDD is provided with the ESS at no additional charge. Fibre Channel (SCSI-FCP) attachment configurations are supported in the AIX, HP-UX, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Solaris environments.

ESS Model 800 Overview

The ESS is an intelligent disk system designed to provide high-performance high-availability, and high-capacity disk storage.

Physical View

The physical configuration of the ESS consists of the following components:

  • Base Enclosure: The base enclosure provides the rack and packaging that contain host adapters, the cluster complexes, device adapters, and power supplies, as well as, space for up to 16 Disk Eight-Packs.

  • Expansion Enclosure: The expansion enclosure provides the rack and packaging for an additional 32 Disk Eight-Packs. It also contains its own set of power supplies.

  • Host Adapters: Host adapters provide the I/O connections between the ESS and server/fabric components. Up to 16 SCSI, ESCON, and Fibre Channel (SCSI-FCP and FICON) host adapters can be installed in an ESS in any combination. The SCSI and ESCON adapter each have two ports; the Fibre Channel adapter has one port. They are installed within four host adapter bays (each cluster contains two bays) and can communicate with either cluster (cache and NVS).

  • Cluster Complex: The cluster complex (or just "cluster") provides the management functions, including I/O processing, caching, data transfer, and advanced functions, for the ESS. The ESS has two clusters that operate independently to help optimize performance, but also provide redundancy to support high availability. In the event of a cluster failure, the other cluster can take over the function of the failed cluster.

    A cluster is composed of the following components:

    • Cluster Processor: The cluster processor executes Licensed Internal Code (LIC) to manage and control the operations and advanced functions of the ESS. Both clusters have a symmetrical multiprocessor (SMP).

    • Cache: Cache is designed to help improve performance by storing frequently-accessed data so that it is available without disk access. The ESS supports up to 64 GB of cache and it is equally divided between each cluster. To help protect against loss of data on a write operation, the ESS stores two copies of written data, one in cache and the other in NVS.

    • Nonvolatile Storage (NVS): NVS is used to store a second copy of write data to help protect against loss of data in the event of a cluster or power failure. The ESS has a 2 GB NVS, which is split between the two clusters. Data written to the cache in one cluster is written to the NVS in the other cluster. A battery protects the data within the NVS in the event of a total power outage.

  • External interfaces: Each cluster contains external interfaces, including a CD-ROM, Ethernet connection, and IBM Customer Engineer (CE) port, that are used to install and update LIC, perform configuration management functions, and perform service operations.

  • Device Adapters: Device adapters provide the connection between the clusters and the disk drives. Each ESS has eight device adapters that are configured in pairs (one in each cluster), with each pair supporting two independent Serial Storage Architecture (SSA) loops with attached disk drives. A loop consists of two physical links, one in each direction, that each allow two read operations and two write operations to be performed simultaneously by each adapter. Each device adapter within a pair routinely manages access to half of the disk drives on a loop. However, in the event of a device adapter or cluster failure, the drives are accessible by the other device adapter (and cluster).

  • Disk Drives: The disk drives provide storage capacity for the ESS. Disk drives are installed in Eight-Packs, a physical package of eight disk drives of the same type (capacity and rpm). Up to 16 Disk Eight-Packs are supported in the ESS base enclosure, with support for an additional 32 Disk Eight-Packs in the Expansion Enclosure. Disk Eight-Packs are available with 18.2 GB, 36.4 GB, 72.8 GB, and 145.6 GB drives.

  • Power Supplies: The ESS has two AC/DC power supplies. External power (three-phase) is provided to each AC/DC power supply through a separate line cord and either power supply can support power requirements for the entire ESS. The ESS also has a battery with sufficient capacity to provide power for a fully configured ESS for a minimum of 5 minutes if power from both line cords is lost.

Logical View

To servers, the ESS appears to be a set of disk volumes that can be configured to emulate disk device types that are compatible with the attaching servers.

The storage capacity of the ESS is logically divided into groups of eight physical disk drives that are each configured as either a RAID 5 or RAID 10 array. The array is logically formatted to support either:

  • Count-key data (3380 or 3390 track format)
  • Fixed-block data (either 512 or 520 byte logical blocks)

Once formatted, the array is then subdivided into individual volumes or LUNs that can be assigned to the various attached servers.

The ESS logical configuration is created and managed using the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Specialist, a Web-based tool.

ESS Advanced Functions

Advanced functions are enabled and authorized based upon the physical capacity of the ESS:

  • FlashCopy and FlashCopy Version 2
    • Enablement and authorization must be equal to or greater than the total physical capacity of the ESS.

  • PPRC and PPRC Version 2

    • Enablement and authorization must be equal to or greater than the total physical capacity of the ESS.

  • PAV:

    • Enablement and authorization must be equal to or greater than the physical capacity within the ESS that will be logically configured as Count Key Data (CKD) volumes for use with zSeries and S/390 servers.

  • XRC:

    • Enablement and authorization must be equal to or greater than the physical capacity within the ESS that will be logically configured as Count Key Data (CKD) volumes for use with zSeries and S/390 servers.

Standby CoD Disk Eight-Packs can be excluded from the physical capacity calculation when the Standby CoD Indicator (feature number 9510) is present on the machine.

Limitations

Disk Eight-Pack features of the same capacity but different rpm can be intermixed not only within an ESS, but also within an SSA loop. When 15,000 rpm Disk Eight-Packs will be installed onto an SSA loop with logically configured Disk Eight-Packs of the same capacity but lower rpm, IBM recommends the purchase of the appropriate 15,000 rpm Spare Upgrade as a corequisite to the purchase of the 15,000 rpm Disk Eight-Packs.

The Spare Upgrade feature contains two 15,000 rpm disk drives of the selected capacity and will be used to replace the lower rpm drives assigned to the spare pool on that SSA loop. Upgrading the spares to 15,000 rpm is necessary to help maintain the performance benefits offered by the 15,000 rpm drives. Failure to upgrade the spares when an intermix situation is first created can leave the machine vulnerable to performance degradation in the event of a 15,000 rpm drive failure.

Machines with Expansion Enclosure (feature #2110) are subject to intermix within an SSA loop. Even for those models with an Expansion Enclosure, intermix within an SSA loop may not always occur. Your disk marketing specialist can help you determine whether your configuration is subject to rpm intermix within an SSA loop and can help you plan accordingly.

Support for rpm intermix among same-capacity disks is available only as field install. New ESS machine orders continue to be subject to the following limitation:

For a given capacity, the 15,000 rpm Disk Eight-Pack features (#214x and #215x) cannot be intermixed with lower rpm Disk Eight-Pack features (#212x and #213x) of the same capacity.

  • #2142 and #2152 (18.2 GB, 15,000 rpm) cannot be intermixed with #2122 or #2132.
  • #2143 and #2153 (36.4 GB, 15,000 rpm) cannot be intermixed with #2123 or #2133.
  • #2144 and #2154 (72.8 GB, 15,000 rpm) cannot be intermixed with #2124 or #2134.

Hardware Requirements

The ESS ships with IBM Licensed Internal Code (LIC) that is licensed for use by a customer on a specific machine, designated by serial number, under the terms and conditions of the IBM Customer Agreement or the IBM Agreement for Licensed Internal Code.

The ESS Model 800 requires ESS LIC level 2.0.0, or later.

PPRC

PPRC must be purchased for both the primary and secondary ESS. In three-machine Asynchronous Cascading PPRC (PPRC Metro/Global Copy) configurations, PPRC must also be purchased for the intermediate ESS.

PPRC requires the installation of at least one Fibre Channel/FICON or ESCON host adapter on each ESS in the PPRC configuration to serve as the PPRC communications link. For higher availability, IBM recommends that more than one host adapter per ESS be used for the PPRC connectivity.

PPRC is supported with the use of SAN fabric products, ESCON directors, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) products, and channel extenders. A current list of supported environments, configurations, networks, and products is available at:

Vendors should be consulted regarding hardware and software prerequisites when using their products in an ESS PPRC configuration. IBM is not responsible for third-party products.

When using channel extender products with PPRC, the channel extender vendor will determine the maximum distance supported between the primary and secondary ESS. The vendors should be contacted for their distance capability, line quality requirements, and WAN attachment capabilities.

PPRC over Fibre Channel: PPRC over Fibre Channel communication links has the following additional prerequisites:

  • ESS LIC level 2.3.0, or later
  • PPRC Version 2
  • Fibre Channel/FICON Host Adapter (feature #3024 or #3025)
Asynchronous PPRC (PPRC Global Mirror): PPRC Global Mirror has the following additional prerequisites:

  • ESS LIC level 2.4.0, or later

  • PPRC Version 2

  • Fibre Channel communications link

  • FlashCopy Version 2 on the secondary ESS. If PPRC Global Mirror will be used during failback from the secondary ESS machine(s), FlashCopy Version 2 must also be enabled on the primary machine(s).

In the event of a planned or unplanned outage, recovery procedures are required to achieve a consistent and restartable copy of the data at the remote site. Scripts and software can be used to help automate these procedures.

PPRC Global Mirror is not supported in Asynchronous Cascading PPRC (PPRC Metro/Global Copy) configurations as an alternative to the PPRC-XD (PPRC Global Copy) relationship to the remote site.

Asynchronous Cascading PPRC (PPRC Metro/Global Copy): PPRC Metro/Global Copy has the following additional prerequisites:

  • ESS LIC level 2.2.0, or later
  • PPRC Version 2

PPRC Global Mirror is not supported in Asynchronous Cascading PPRC (PPRC Metro/Global Copy) configurations as an alternative to the PPRC-XD (PPRC Global Copy) relationship to the remote site.

XRC

XRC requires a minimum of 16 GB of cache in the ESS Model 800.

When failback from the secondary ESS to the primary ESS is required, XRC must be purchased for both ESS machines. If the secondary ESS is a Model 800, it also requires a minimum of 16 GB of cache.

ESS API Support for Copy Services

The ESS API commands can be issued only to a Model 800 with ESS LIC level 2.3.0, or later. If that Model 800 is configured as a copy services server, the ESS API can also be used to configure and use Copy Services on ESS Models 800, F20, and F10 residing within the copy services domain. Machines within the copy services domain require ESS LIC level 2.2.0, or later.

This feature ensures that the maximum shipping weight of the ESS base enclosure and Expansion Enclosure feature (#2110) will not exceed 2,000 pounds during the initial shipment.

The weight of the ESS is reduced by removing selected components, which will be shipped separately. The components will be installed into the machine by the IBM Customer Engineer during machine installation. This feature will increase the machine installation time and should only be ordered if required.

(#2110) Expansion Enclosure

The Expansion Enclosure used for adding additional Disk Eight-Packs into an ESS configuration. The Expansion Enclosure holds up to 32 additional Disk Eight-Pack features (#212x, #213x, #214x, and #215x) and four Disk Eight-Pack Mounting Kit features (#2102 and #9102).

  • Corequisites: One Power Cord feature (#98xx or #998x) must be specified and must be of the same type as the Power Cord feature specified for the ESS base enclosure (i.e., last two digits of the feature number must be the same). (#212x and #214x) Disk Eight-Packs

A Disk Eight-Pack contains eight disk drives, all which are of the same capacity (either 18.2 GB, 36.4 GB, 72.8, or 145.6 GB) and rpm (10,000 or 15,000).

The ESS supports the intermix of 18.2 GB, 36.4 GB, 72.8 and 145.6 GB drives and the intermix of 10,000 rpm and 15,000 rpm drives, subject to the limitations documented in the Technical Description section.

Feature conversions are available to support the exchange of existing disk eight-packs when purchasing new disk eight-packs.

(#219X) Spare Upgrades

The Spare Upgrade feature contains two 15,000 rpm disk drives of the selected capacity and will be used to replace the lower rpm drives assigned to the spare pool on that SSA loop.

Disk Eight-Pack features of the same capacity but different rpm can be intermixed not only within an ESS, but also within an SSA loop. When 15,000 rpm Disk Eight-Packs are installed onto an SSA loop with logically configured Disk Eight-Packs of the same capacity but lower rpm, IBM recommends the purchase of the appropriate 15,000 rpm Spare Upgrade as a corequisite to the purchase of the 15,000 rpm Disk Eight-Packs.

Upgrading the spares to 15,000 rpm is necessary to help maintain the performance benefits offered by the 15,000 rpm drives. Failure to upgrade the spares when an intermix situation is first created can leave the machine vulnerable to performance degradation in the event of a 15,000 rpm drive failure.

Machines with an Expansion Enclosure (feature #2110) are subject to intermix within an SSA loop. Even for those models with an Expansion Enclosure, intermix within an SSA loop may not always occur. Your disk marketing specialist can help you determine whether your configuration is subject to rpm intermix within an SSA loop and can help you plan accordingly.

Support for rpm intermix among same-capacity disks is available only as field install. New ESS machine orders continue to be subject to the following limitation:

For a given capacity, the 15,000 rpm Disk Eight-Pack features (#214x and #215x) cannot be intermixed with lower rpm Disk Eight-Pack features (#212x and #213x) of the same capacity.

  • #2142 and #2152 (18.2 GB, 15,000 rpm) cannot be intermixed with #2122 or #2132.
  • #2143 and #2153 (36.4 GB, 15,000 rpm) cannot be intermixed with #2123 or #2133.

This feature must be ordered for the first ESS installation at each location.

Up to seven (7) ESS machines are supported per ESS Master Console. Six additional ESS machines can be connected into the ESS Master Console with the Remote Support Cables feature (#2716).

These features provide one Fibre Channel/FICON Host Adapter for ESS attachment to Fibre Channel (FCP) and FICON servers and SAN fabric components.

The adapters have one port with an LC connector and support 200 or 100 MB/sec, full duplex data transfer over long wave or short wave fibre links. The adapters support the SCSI-FCP ULP (Upper Layer Protocol) on point-to-point, fabric, and arbitrated loop (private loop) topologies and the FICON ULP on point-to-point and fabric topologies. SCSI-FCP and FICON are not supported simultaneously on the adapter.

One cable is provided at no charge with each Fibre Channel/FICON Host Adapter feature and is specified using features #975x - #976x.

(#85xx) PPRC Version 2

These features enable the PPRC Version 2 function on the ESS Model 800 at a given capacity level.

PPRC Version 2 is enabled and authorized based upon the physical capacity of the ESS. The enablement and authorization must be equal to or greater than the total physical capacity of the ESS. Refer to the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Introduction and Planning Guide (GC26-7444) for physical capacity calculation guidelines.

PPRC Version 2 must be purchased for both the primary and secondary ESS. In three-machine Asynchronous Cascading PPRC configurations, PPRC Version 2 must also be purchased for the intermediate ESS.

The initial enablement of PPRC Version is designed to be a concurrent activity assuming the appropriate level of microcode is installed on the machine. The removal of PPRC Version 2 (to deactivate the function) is a disruptive activity and requires a machine IML.

Ordering ESS advanced functions

Advanced functions require the selection of IBM 2105 Model 800 feature numbers and the purchase of the matching IBM 2240 ESS Function Authorization feature numbers:

  • The ESS Model 800 feature number enables a given function on the ESS at a given capacity level.

  • The ESS Function Authorization feature number authorizes use of the given advanced function at the given capacity level on the ESS machine for which it was purchased.

The ESS Model 800 8xxx feature numbers and the ESS Function Authorization 8xxx feature numbers are corequisites and must always correspond to one another.

The following ordering process must be used for the advanced functions. This process must be used for all advanced function orders (initial orders or upgrades).

  • The 2240 Function Authorizations must be included in the same order as the ESS Model 800.

  • The 2240 Function Authorizations (an I/O component) must b e linked to the ESS Model 800 (a CPU/SIU) during order entry.

  • The ESS Model 800 and the 2240 Function Authorizations must all have a System Type of 2105.

  • The ESS Model 800 and the 2240 Function Authorizations must all have the same System Number. The 2240 Function Authorizations must have the unique System Number of the ESS Model 800 for which they are being ordered.

    • All machine types on the order have the same Scheduling Link Number.

    • All machine types on the order must have the same Customer Requested Arrival Date (CRAD).

Failure to follow this process will result in an ordering error; incorrectly placed orders will not be processed by the plant. Incorrect orders include:

  • Failure to link the ESS Function Authorization order(s) to the ESS Model 800 order.

  • Purchase of an ESS Function Authorization feature number without an order for the corequisite #8xxx advanced function feature on the ESS Model 800.

  • Specification of a #8xxx advanced function feature on the ESS Model 800without an order for the corequisite ESS Function Authorization feature number.

License upgrade: Upgrades to higher enablement and authorization levels should be processed using the "Feature Exchange" option of the MSORDER transaction. The upgrade will be priced as the delta between the current purchase price of the ESS Function Authorization feature numbers added and removed. The feature exchange must be processed against both the ESS Model 800 8xxx feature number(s) and ESS Function Authorization 8xxx feature number(s).

A feature exchange to a lower capacity level (a numerically lower feature number) is not supported, with the following exception:

  • Within a given advanced function type, the #8x99 (0 TB (disable)) feature can be exchanged for any #8xxx feature. The feature exchange must be processed against both the ESS Model 800 8xxx feature number and ESS Function Authorization 8xxx feature number.

Upgrades from PPRC and FlashCopy (features #82xx and #83xx, respectively) to PPRC Version 2 and FlashCopy Version 2 (features #85xx and #86xx, respectively) should be processed using the "Feature Exchange" option of the MSORDER transaction. The feature exchange can be made to either the same or a higher capacity level. The upgrade will be priced as the delta between the current purchase price of the features removed and added. The feature exchange must be processed against both the ESS Model 800 8xxx feature number and ESS Function Authorization 8xxx feature number.

Downgrades from PPRC Version 2 and FlashCopy Version 2 (features #85xx and #86xx, respectively) to PPRC and FlashCopy (features #82xx and #83xx, respectively) is not supported.

Removal/deactivation: The removal (deactivation) of an advanced function is processed using a Feature Exchange to feature #8x99. The feature exchange must be processed against both the ESS Model 800 8xxx feature number and ESS Function Authorization 8xxx feature number.

No refund or credit is provided to the customer. Removal of an advanced function is a disruptive activity and requires a machine IML.
