Abstract

The 2062 Cisco Systems MDS 9216i (2062-D1H) Multilayer Fabric Switch and MDS 9216A (2062-D1A) Multilayer Fabric Switch, are added to the selection of 2-Gbps storage area network (SAN) director and fabric switch offerings available from IBM.

These models highlight an advanced modular design, to provide built-in scalability and support future growth by featuring an enhanced internal backplane design, and accommodate expansion with the full line of optional Cisco Fiber Channel switching modules and IP multiprotocol switching modules.

Model Abstract 2062-D1H

The 2062 Cisco Systems MDS 9216i Multilayer Fabric Switch Model D1H is designed to support business continuance solutions in a cost-effective manner. It offers a multiprotocol capable integrated Fibre Channel and IP Storage Services architecture including fourteen 2-Gbps Fibre Channel interfaces for high-performance SAN connectivity, and two 1-Gbps Ethernet ports enabling Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) and iSCSI storage services. The MDS 9216i base model includes iSCSI capability to extend the benefits of Fibre Channel SAN-based storage to Ethernet-attached servers at a lower cost than Fibre Channel interconnect alone. Additionally, the MDS 9216i offers optional FCIP activation for remote SAN extension. This capability can help simplify data protection and business continuance strategies by enabling backup, remote replication, and other disaster recovery services over wide area network (WAN) distances using open-standard FCIP tunneling.

Model Abstract 2062-D1A

The 2062 Cisco Systems MDS 9216A Multilayer Fabric Switch Model D1A is designed for building mission-critical enterprise SANs where scalability, multilayer capability, resiliency, robust security, and ease of management are required. The MDS 9216A base model includes an updated internal backplane, designed with built-in scalability and growth options to accommodate next-generation Cisco line cards. The internal backplane within the MDS 9216A base model provides support for next-generation advanced function, compared to the existing capability built into the current Cisco MDS 9216 (2062-D01) Multilayer Fabric Switch.

Provides an enhanced internal backplane to accommodate next-generation optional modules and advanced function

Description

The MDS 9216i and MDS 9216A models are designed to provide 1 / 2 Gbps Fibre Channel compatibility and performance with advanced intelligence to address security, performance, and manageability requirements to consolidate geographically dispersed SAN islands into a large SAN enterprise, as well as the following standard Cisco MDS 9000 features:

Virtual storage area network (VSAN) technology to help provide intelligent network services
A network security framework
Sophisticated diagnostics

The Cisco MDS 9216i and 9216A (2062-D1H and 2062-D1A) are both three-rack-unit Multilayer Fabric switches featuring nondisruptive software upgrade support for the single switching module, and hot-swap capabilities for module components: dual redundant power supplies, fan assemblies, single switching module, and optic transceivers.

Standard features include:

Fabric Manager - to help provides switch configuration and troubleshooting capabilities
VSAN technology - to help provide hardware-enforced, isolated environments within a single physical fabric
Access control lists (ACLs), enabling hardware-based intelligent frame processing
Fabric Zoning, which provides a security framework through logical unit number (LUN) zoning, read-only zoning, and broadcast zones

Optional features include:

Fiber optic cables for connection to host systems and storage systems or devices. These can be customer-supplied or ordered with the switch.
Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) activation on the 9216i (2062-D1H) base model. FCIP activation enables extended distance fabric capabilities over LAN and WAN connections.
Enterprise Package Bundle, to help provide enhanced security and management features. The bundle includes first-year warranty plus two additional years of post-warranty support for the Enterprise Package Bundle.
Enterprise Package, to help provide enhanced security and management features. This package includes only the first-year warranty for the Enterprise Package.
Fabric Manager Server Bundle, which is designed to extend Cisco Fabric Manager through historical performance data collection. This bundle includes first-year warranty plus two additional years of post-warranty support for the Fabric Manager Server Bundle.
Fabric Manager Server Package, extending Cisco Fabric Manager through historical performance data collection. This package includes only the first-year warranty the Fabric Manager Server Package
Mainframe Package Bundle, which provides the following features to enable operation in mainframe storage network applications:
- Mainframe FICON protocol
- FICON Control Unit Port (CUP)
- VSANs for FICON and FCP intermixing
- FICON switch cascading
- Fabric binding
The bundle includes first-year warranty plus two additional years of post-warranty support for the Mainframe Server Package Bundle.
Mainframe Server Package, providing the following features to enable operation in mainframe storage network applications:
- Mainframe FICON protocol

This package includes only the first-year warranty for the Mainframe Server Package.
Optional 16-or 32-port Fibre Channel line card, which enables an upgrade to 16 and/or 32 Fibre Channel ports. (Line cards do not include SFPs, and must be ordered with your choice of shortwave and/or longwave SFPs.)
Cisco Multiprotocol Services Module card (with FC and IP Services ports) and/or FCIP activation. This card provides an integrated design including fourteen 1 / 2 Gbps Fibre Channel ports and two 1 Gbps Ethernet ports. It includes Fibre Channel port capability, Internet Protocol (IP) Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) capability, and the option to activate Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) functionality.
Optional 8-or 4-port IP line card and/or optional FCIP activation. Optional line cards provide connection to Gigabit Ethernet networks and support for low-cost iSCSI host initiators to access Fibre Channel storage. FCIP activation features allow the IPS Services Module to extend native Fibre Channel Fabric over LAN and WAN infrastructure.
Optional Caching Services modules, supporting scalable in-band storage virtualization services within the network, to support high-availability, and network-hosted replication services. The high-availability cluster solution design requires both the Initial Caching Services Module and the Additional Caching Services Module along with the Ship Group for Caching Services Module.
Optional Fibre Channel SW and LW SFPs or Tri-Rate SW and LW SFPs.
Optional post-warranty support features with options for up to five years' total support.

Network-accelerated serverless backup applications use the Serverless Backup Engine Interface to enable disk systems write directly to tape systems without requiring backup server reads and writes.
Network-assisted appliance-based storage applications use the SANTap Service Inteface to directly replicate data to remote sites without requiring application server agents.

Caching Services Modules

Cisco MDS 9000 Caching Services Modules (#2300/#2301) are designed to provide advanced virtualization technology for use with IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller Storage Software for Cisco 9000 when used with Cisco MDS 9216 switches. Caching Services Modules support scalable, in-band storage virtualization services within the network, high-availability and network-hosted replication services. The high-availability cluster solution design combines two MDS 9000 Caching Services Modules, complete with redundant processors, 16 GB of mirrored cache memory, and battery backup. This cluster delivers the functions provided by the SAN Volume Controller Storage Software for Cisco MDS 9000.

Cisco Post-Warranty Support Features for MDS 9000 Software Packages

Cisco post-warranty support features, resold by IBM, available for each of the IBM 2062 switch, are also available for optional features such as MDS Enterprise, MDS Fabric Manager and MDS Mainframe Packages. In order for Cisco post-warranty support to be in effect on MDS 9000 software features, the base switch model must first be under Cisco warranty or Cisco post-warranty support. The Cisco post-warranty support features are available at initial plant order and field install, and provide the ability to establish an additional year of Cisco support, beyond the first-year warranty period.
Cisco post-warranty support options are subject to Cisco's standard Post-Warranty Support Contract terms and conditions included in the packaging with the eligible products. Some limitations apply.
When ordering Cisco post-warranty features for field installation (MES), the customer must sign the Cisco Master Service Agreement (MSA). The MSA is required prior to IBM being able to order Cisco post-warranty support as MES.
