Description

The MDS 9000 family introduces SAN capabilities including Cisco's Virtual SAN (VSAN) technology, designed to enable efficient SAN utilization by creating hardware-based isolated environments within a single SAN fabric. Each VSAN can be zoned as a typical SAN and maintains its own fabric services for added scalability and resilience.

Overall the MDS 9000 Family is designed for investment protection, flexibility, scalability, robustness, advanced diagnostics, and integration between low cost workgroup, and enterprise SANs.

Cisco's Virtual SAN (VSAN) Technology

The MDS 9000 SAN Fabric family introduces Cisco's Virtual SAN (VSAN) technology, offering IT managers the capability to overlay multiple hardware enforced virtual fabric environment, within a single physical fabric infrastructure. Each VSAN contains separate (dedicated) fabric services designed for enhanced scalability, resilience, and independence among storage resource domains. This is especially useful in segregating service operations and failover events between high availability resource domains allocated to different VSANs. Each VSAN contains its own complement of hardware-enforced zones, dedicated fabric services, and management capabilities, just as if the VSAN were configured as a separate physical fabric.

Therefore, VSANs are designed to allow more efficient SAN utilization and flexibility, because SAN resources may be allocated and shared among more users, while supporting secure segregation of traffic and retaining independent control of resource domains on a VSAN-by-VSAN basis.

Fibre Channel SAN Capabilities

The following Fibre Channel SAN capabilities are integrated into the base of all models within the MDS 9000 family, and are designed to simplify deployment and efficient operation of large-scale fabric installations.

  • PortChannels allow users to aggregate up to sixteen physical Inter Switch Links (ISL) into a single logical bundle, designed to optimize bandwidth utilization and resilience between switches. The group of Fibre Channel ISLs designated to act as a PortChannel may consist of any port on any 16 Port Switching Module within the MDS 9000 chassis, allowing the overall PortChannel to remain active upon failure of one or more ports, or failure of one or more Switching Modules.

  • Hardware enforced Fabric Zoning designated by N_Port WWN, N_Port FC-ID, or Fx_Port WWN.

  • Industry standard Fibre Channel ports, E_Port, F_Port, and FL_Port, as well as Cisco specific modes of port operation

SAN Management Capabilities

The MDS 9000 SAN Fabric family provides three principal modes of management: Cisco MDS 9000 family Command Line Interface (CLI), Cisco Fabric Manager, and integration via API with third-party or end user storage management tools.

Highlights for Cisco Coarse Wavelength-Division (2062-CW1)

The Cisco CWDM Extended Distance Solution (2062-CW1) is designed to transmit multiple 1 / 2 Gbps Fibre Channel and/or Gigabit Ethernet traffic streams over a single, shared fiber optic cable. The CWDM solution consists of a two slot (1RU) CWDM Chassis, which accommodates up to two passive optic CWDM Mux plug-in modules. Two types of modules are available: an 8-wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer module and a 4-wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer module with add/drop capabilities. The active CWDM wavelength-specific SFPs are installed into available Fibre Channel and IP ports within one or more MDS Directors. Up to 8 CWDM wavelength-specific SFPs may be connected to the passive optic CWDM Mux plug-in module, using the 1 meter or 5 meter single mode Lucent Connector (LC)/Standard Connector (SC) fiber optic jumper cables (#5220 and #5221). Each wavelength specific SFP represents a color or channel, and up to 8 channels are transmitted simultaneously between sites, over a single, shared fiber optic cable, helping reduce the costs for Extended Distance Solutions. Each site must include at least one CWDM Chassis. A maximum of 16 wavelength-specific SFPs are supported in any one MDS Director.

Cisco Post-Warranty Support Features for Modules

Cisco post-warranty support features, resold by IBM, are available for each of the IBM 2062 Switch and Director models, as well as for optional features such as MDS 9000 Modules. In order for Cisco post-warranty support to be in effect on MDS 9000 Module features, the base Switch or Director model must first be under Cisco warranty or Cisco post-warranty support. The Cisco post-warranty support features are available at initial plant order and field install, and provide the ability to establish up to four years, 24x7, on-site Cisco support, beyond the first-year warranty period.

Cisco post-warranty support options are subject to Cisco's standard Post-Warranty Support Contract terms and conditions included in the packaging with the eligible products. Some limitations apply.

When ordering Cisco post-warranty features for field installation (MES), the customer must sign the Cisco Master Service Agreement (MSA). The MSA is required prior to IBM being able to order Cisco post-warranty support as MES.

Note: SALES REPRESENTATIVES MUST CHECK SERVICE LEVEL AVAILABILITY PRIOR TO SELLING A 24x7x4 SUPPORT CONTRACT FOR THIS PRODUCT. REFER TO WEBSITE PROVIDED ON E-CONFIG SALES PAGE FOR IBM 2062.
