Abstract

The IBM 2061 Cisco MDS 9000 family is designed to offer investment protection, flexibility, scalability, robustness, advanced diagnostics, and integration for workgroup and enterprise SANs. They are designed to assist users implementing a multiprotocol-capable SAN infrastructure with advanced intelligence that helps address demands for the security, performance, and manageability required to consolidate geographically dispersed SANs.

Model Abstract 2061-PA2

The IBM 2061 Cisco Systems Port Adapter Analyzer Model PA2 is designed to provide enhanced performance monitoring functionality that can help your network analysis and troubleshooting as well as integration with Cisco Fabric Manager. when used with the optional Cisco MDS 9000 Fabric Manager Server Package, the enhanced Port Analyzer Adapter is designed to record the original size of truncated Fibre Channel frames as they are encapsulated and transferred over Ethernet. This allows the Cisco Fabric Manager Server Package to accurately calculate and display performance data without requiring the forwarding of full data traffic frames over Ethernet.

Description

Cisco MDS 9000 Port Analyzer Adapter, Enhanced (2061-PA2)

The Cisco MDS 9000 Port Analyzer Adapter, Enhanced (2061-PA2) is designed to enhance performance monitoring functionality, helping to increase the accuracy of network analysis and troubleshooting. When used with the optional Cisco Fabric Manager Server Package, the enhanced Port Analyzer Adapter is designed to record the original size of truncated Fibre Channel frames as they are encapsulated and transferred over Ethernet. This allows the Cisco Fabric Manager Server Package to accurately calculate and display performance data without requiring the forwarding of full data traffic frames over Ethernet.

Additionally, the Port Analyzer Adapter, Enhanced version provides encapsulation of Fibre Channel frames into Ethernet frames, and enables low-cost analysis of Fibre Channel traffic while leveraging existing Ethernet infrastructure. The Port Analyzer Adapter is lightweight, portable, and supports "plug-and-play" operation to facilitate troubleshooting procedures. The Port Analyzer Adapter supports non-disruptive traffic analysis, local monitoring of Fibre Channel protocol layers, and Enhanced Inter-Switch Link (EISL) headers, with no interruption to traffic flow.

The Port Analyzer Adapter, Enhanced version draws upon the Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) feature, included in the MDS 9000 family of Directors and Fabric Switches. SPAN allows storage network administrators to non-disruptively view the traffic between two Fibre Channel ports on a Cisco MDS 9000 Director or Fabric Switch by replicating traffic to a SPAN Destination Port (SD-Port).

The Port Analyzer Adapter, Enhanced version encapsulates the Fibre Channel frames from the SD-Port into Ethernet frames that may be analyzed using a locally attached PC.
