Description

The IBM TotalStorage SAN256N director switching core is designed to provide up to 5 Terabits per second throughput, as well as protocol agnostic and link speed agnostic support. The IBM TotalStorage SAN256N director is initially available in configurations starting with two 16-port Fibre Channel/FICON I/O blades, providing growth from 32 to 256 ports. The IBM TotalStorage SAN256N director comes standard with Enterprise Manager software, and support for on demand flexibility with the introduction of optional firmware activation of features for populated quadrants of I/O blades, including FICON Cascading, FICON CUP, and SAN Services Bundle features. The SAN Services Bundle feature enables flexible use of port blades providing Logical Domain partitioning

The Enterprise Manager (EM) software offers the capability to centralize and monitor the operation of multiple, distributed IBM TotalStorage SAN256N directors, CNT UMD and legacy CNT FC/9000 directors in an enterprise-wide Fibre Channel/FICON fabric backbone. The optional Enterprise Manager Server Bundle allows up to 16 management clients and may be ordered with the IBM TotalStorage SAN256N director. For customers with CNT FC/9000 directors currently using the Enterprise Manager Server, the IBM TotalStorage SAN256N director may be managed from an existing Enterprise Manager Server Bundle having the latest release of Enterprise Manager Server software.

The SAN256N SAN Services Bundle feature is designed to provide flexible use of port blades featuring Logical Domain partitioning, as well as the following functions:

  • Partitioning the physical switch into "Logical Switches" each with its own domain addressing, helping to facilitate SAN island consolidation and port isolation

  • Trunking physical connections to help improve Quality of Service

  • Routing among the SAN Address Space to help facilitate large SAN configurations (large in number of ports and physical location)

Logical Domain partitioning provides the following benefits:

  • Scale down:
    • Segment a chassis into multiple sub-switches and individual domains
    • Independent software loads (up to two)
    • Redundant fabric services per domain

  • Scale up:
    • Virtual ISLs between logical domains
    • Inter-Connect multiple sub-switches without physical cables or adding additional hops and latency

  • Intended benefits:

    • Director availability and switch granularity

    • Test environments with no additional chassis needed

    • SAN consolidation while maintaining existing I/O definitions hardware enforced to provide isolation

The SAN256N comes standard with Enterprise Manager software and highlights on demand flexibility with the introduction of optional activation for populated quadrants of I/O blades, including optional SAN256N FICON Cascading, SAN256N FICON CUP, and SAN256N SAN Services Bundle features.

The Enterprise Manager (EM) software offers the capability to centralize and monitor operation of multiple, distributed SAN256N, CNT UMD, and legacy FC/9000 directors in an enterprise-wide Fibre Channel/FICON fabric backbone. The Enterprise Manager Server Bundle feature allows up to 16 management clients and may be ordered with the SAN256N. For customers with CNT FC/9000 directors under management, the SAN256N may be managed from an existing Enterprise Management Server Bundle feature having the latest release of Enterprise Manager Server software.

Fiber Optic Cables

A fiber optic cable is required for attaching the IBM TotalStorage SAN256N director port to the host system adapters, a fibre channel storage subsystem, or another fibre channel SAN component. Fibre optical cables are customer supplied to enable maximum flexibility and compatibility in various environments, but where a limited distance connection exists, fiber optic cables can be ordered with the CNT products from IBM.

In many situations, the lengths and installation of fiber optic cables required will be unique to each customer's configuration and facility specifications. Product support services offered by IBM Global Services' Site and Connectivity Solutions can provide assistance for these unique cabling and installation requirements.

For situations, where the Fibre Channel Directors and attaching subsystems are within twenty-five (or thirty) meters, and are using a shortwave optical connection, there are two features now available to accommodate these simple installations. Each feature provides a multimode 50.0/125 micrometer fiber optic cable in the available length with duplex SC connectors at both ends. Customer supplied fiber optic cables for shortwave connections must be multimode 50.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 500 meters, or multimode 62.5/125 micrometers for distances up to 175 meters; for longwave connections the fiber cable must be singlemode 9.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 10 kilometers. The connector is a duplex SC type.
