Abstract

The CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director is designed to provide "enterprise-class" availability and fibre channel fabric connectivity for IBM servers and storage supporting the FICON protocol. Because each FC/9000 Director can be configured with up to 256 ports and with the High Availability Option, it is capable of providing a fully-redundant fibre channel fabric switch. Packaged in the FC/9000 40U Cabinet, the 64 and 128-port FC/9000 Director can be configured utilizing six square feet of floor space, and the 256-port FC/9000 Director utilizes twelve square feet of floor space.

Additionally, CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel 64 Port Directors can be field upgraded to the 128-and 256-port capability; 128 Port Directors can be field upgraded to 256-port capability. The expandability and scalability of CNT FC/9000 Directors enables migration and growth to meet your Enterprise SAN needs.

Each of the fibre channel ports support either longwave or shortwave fiber cable attachment, and are self-configuring, supporting fabric, loop (public and private), and inter-switch connections. The CNT-Virtual Storage Networking (IN-VSN) Enterprise Manager software, included with the FC/9000 Director, is designed for centralized management control of multiple FC/9000 Directors across your enterprise. The IN-VSN Enterprise Manager is designed to provide functions such as zoning, monitoring, diagnostics, name server, SNMP alerts, and Call-Home.

Model Abstract 2042-C40

The 2042 Model C40 is the CNT FC/9000 40U Cabinet for the Model 001. A fully configured CNT FC/9000 40U Cabinet can contain one or two Model 001 CNT FC/9000 64 Port Directors. Model 001 64 port Directors can be installed at the plant or in the field.

The Model 001 is the CNT FC/9000 64 Port Director, two of which can be installed in the FC/9000 40U Cabinet (2042-C40). The Model 001 is available in configurations from 16 to 64 ports. With the Model 001 Interconnect Kit (#4128 or 4129), two 64 port Directors within the same FC/9000 Cabinet, can be upgraded to 128 port Director capability. Scalability from an initial installation of 16 ports with the Model 001, all the way to 128 ports is available by adding a second Model 001 with the Interconnection Kit. The IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server (#7600) with up to 16 Management Clients (#7201) can be ordered with the Model 128 and is external to the Cabinet.

Model Abstract 2042-128

The Model 128 is the CNT FC/9000 128 Port Director and supplies a fully integrated CNT FC/9000 40U Cabinet containing the CNT FC/9000 128 Port Director with a minimum for 24 ports to 128 ports. Optionally, the High Availability Option (#5022) can be included. With the Model 128 Interconnect Kit (# 4256), two 128 port Directors with adjacent FC/9000 Cabinets, can be upgraded to 256 port Director capability. The IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server (#7600) with up to 16 Management Clients (#7201) can be ordered with the Model 128 and is external to the Cabinet.

Model Abstract 2042-256

The 2042 Model 256 is the CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel 256 Port Director, part of IBM's Enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN) connectivity offerings. The FC/9000 Director is designed to provide enterprise-class availability and fibre channel fabric connectivity for IBM and third-party servers, and storage products supporting the FICON protocol. Each FC/9000 Director can be configured from 32 to 256 ports and with the High Availability Option (HA), it is designed to provide a fully redundant fibre channel fabric switch. The IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server (#7600) with up to 16 Management Clients (#7201) can be ordered with the Model 128 and is external to the Cabinet.

Note: Existing FC/9000 Fibre Channel 64-port and 128-port Directors can be field upgraded to the 256-port capability. The expandability and scalability of FC/9000 Directors enables migration and growth to meet your Enterprise SAN needs.

Description

High-Performance, Nonstop Switching Service

To enable high data availability across large-scale Data Center SANs, IBM offers the CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director. FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director are designed to provide the scalability demanded by rapidly growing e-business and other mission-critical applications. FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director are scalable up to 256-ports in a single footprint, and are designed to offer the data availability and performance required by today's most demanding data centers.

The FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director features redundant power supplies and N+1 cooling fans, along with redundant active components that support automatic failover. Other high-availability capabilities include hot swapping for all field-replaceable units, nondisruptive firmware updates, and automatic fault detection and isolation. In addition, "call-home" and pager capabilities automatically alert support and maintenance personnel to accelerate problem resolution.

The FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director with the High Availability Option (a recommended option) offers redundant internal pathing, control modules, and power modules for all active electronic components, helping to support continuous data access and high performance in the event of a single component failure. Together, these features help support nondisruptive maintenance and upgrades without loss of data access.

You can use multiple FC/9000 Fibre Channel Directors to create a scalable Enterprise SAN backbone that supports consolidated storage management applications such as disk sharing, tape pooling, and enterprise-wide data sharing.

Multiple Configuration Options

The CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director allows a wide range of configuration options. The basic building block is the I/O Module which contains eight Fibre Channel ports, and available with 2 Gb or 1 Gb technology. New build base CNT FC/9000 Directors are configured with the 2 Gb XFIO2 Modules. Growth to the maximum ports counts is available in either 2 Gb XFIO2 or 1 Gb FIO Modules. Intermixing of the two I/O module types is supported.

The 2 Gb XFIO2 Module supports autosensing, and will operate as either a 2 Gb port or 1 Gb port depending on the attaching device capabilities. Autosensing enables the 2 Gb XFIO2 module to support both 1 Gb and 2 Gb fabric devices.

The 1 Gb FIO Module supports 1 Gb fabric, 1 Gb public loop (FC-AL), and 1 Gb private loop devices. The 1 Gb FIO Module is a necessary component to include attachment of 1 Gb FC-AL devices, such as IBM 3590 and LTO tape products.

Intermix of 2 Gb XFIO2 and 1 Gb FIO Modules in a FC/9000 Director enables support of both 1 Gb and 2 Gb fabric devices, as well as 1 Gb loop devices.

Prior to adding the 2 Gb XFIO2 Module to an existing FC/9000 Director, an upgrade may be necessary to bring some hardware components up to supported versions for 2 Gb. Please refer to the section below on Scalability Options to assure the appropriate upgrade prerequisites are applied to the existing Director.

The Model 256 is the CNT 256-Port Director, complete with two FC/9000 40U Cabinets, and available in configurations from 32 to 256 connections. The Model 128 is the CNT FC/9000 128-Port Director, complete with the FC/9000 40U Cabinet, and in configurations from 24 to 128 connections. The Model 001 is the CNT FC/9000 64-Port Director, two Model 001s can be installed in the FC/9000 40U Cabinet (2042-C40). The Model 001 is available in configurations from 16 to 64 connections. With the Model 001 Interconnect Kit (#4128 or #4129), two 64-port Directors within the same FC/9000 Cabinet, can be upgraded to 128-port Director capability. With the 256-Port Interconnect Kit (#4256) and the appropriate upgrade to 256-port capability features (#4001/2 and #4008/9), now available on the Model 001 and the Model 128, two 128-port capable directors can be upgraded to a 256-port director capability. Scalability from an initial installation of 16-ports with the Model 001, all the way to 256-ports is available by adding additional Model 001s and/or Model 128s with appropriate upgrade and Inter-connection Kit features.

Scalability Options

The CNT FC/9000 Director can scale from a 64-port model (IBM 2042-001) to 256-port configuration equivalent to the 2042-256 Model. There are two versions of FC/9000 hardware that must be considered to determine the appropriate Upgrade and Interconnections Kit Features - the "original" and the "new" FC/9000 hardware models. You can determine which version model by following instructions provided at:

For Model 001:

  • Two original hardware models can be interconnected with feature code #4128 to provide a 128-port capable Director still with original hardware.

  • Two original hardware models can be interconnected with feature code #4008 (if both Model 001s do not contain the High Availability/HA option, #5020); or with feature code #4009 (if both Model 001s do contain the HA #5020 feature) to provide a 128-port capable Director with the new version of hardware. You can not interconnect one Model 001 with feature #5020 with a Model that does not have feature #5020 installed. If this situation exists, you must first add the High Availability feature #5020 to the one unit without HA.

  • One original hardware model can be upgraded with feature code #4001 (if the Model 001 do not contain the High Availability option, #5020); or with feature code #4002 (if the Model 001 does contain the #5020 feature) to provide a 64-port capable Director with the new version of hardware.

  • Two hardware models can be interconnected with one feature #4129 to provide a 128-port capable Director with the new version hardware.

  • One original hardware model can be interconnected with a new hardware model using feature #4129, and either feature #4001 or #4002 to provide a 128-port capable Director with the new version hardware. original hardware model and new hardware model both have the High Availability option (#5020) then use feature #4002, if not use feature #4001.

For Model 128:

  • Two original hardware models can be interconnected using feature #4129, and two feature code #4008 (if both Model 128s do not contain the High Availability option, #5022) or two #4009 (if both Model 128s do contain the #5022 feature) to provide a 256-port capable Director with the new version of hardware. You can not interconnect one Model 128 with feature #5022 with a Model that does not have feature #5022 installed. If this situation exists, you must first add the High Availability feature #5022 to the one unit without HA.

  • Two new hardware models can be interconnected with one feature #4256 to provide a 256-port capable Director with the new version hardware.

  • One original hardware model can be upgraded with feature code #4008 (if the Model 128 does not contain the High Availability option, #5022); or with feature code #4009 (if the Model 128 does contain the #5022 feature) to provide a 128-port Director with the new version hardware.

  • One original hardware model can be interconnected with a new hardware model using feature #4256, and either feature #4008 or #4009 to provide a 256-port capable Director with the new version hardware. If the original hardware model and new hardware model both have the High Availability option (#5022) then use feature #4009, if not use feature #4008.

Note: Only Models with the new version hardware can be interconnected to form a 256-port capable FC/9000 Director. When interconnecting multiple Model 001s and/or Model 128s to form a 256-port capable Director, first follow one of the above steps that results in a valid configuration with new version hardware. All FC/9000 Model 256 (2042-256) are new version hardware.

IN-VSN Enterprise Manager

IN-VSN Enterprise Manager (Management System) is designed to centralize and continuously monitor the management of multiple, distributed FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director in an enterprise-wide Fibre Channel fabric backbone. Designed for usability, this flexible management system helps simplify the addition of managed FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director as the enterprise Fibre Channel fabric grows. Utilizing a browser-based GUI, operators can use the IN-VSN Enterprise Manager locally or remotely from LAN-attached Manager Clients.

IN-VSN Enterprise Manager is designed with a flexible architecture consisting of the IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Console with IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Server software and multiple IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Clients. You can access all management, monitoring, and diagnostic functions by running the IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Client on remote workstations. One or more FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director can be controlled from the same control node if they have Fibre Channel connectivity to the FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director that in turn has the Ethernet connection to the IN-VSM Management System.

IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Console

The IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Server software runs on the Manager Console. The IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Console, a desktop PC running Windows 2000, includes:

  • Monitor
  • One Gigabit Memory
  • Internal and external modems for call home and remote diagnostics
  • An 24-port Ethernet Hub with cable for a private LAN connection for multiple FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director Control Modules

The Manager Server:

  • Supports continuous FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director monitoring, logging, and alerting
  • Centralizes log files, configuration databases, and firmware distribution
  • Supports centralized "call home", pager alert, service, and support operations.

Multiple FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director Control Modules can be managed from a single Manager Server, and up to 16 concurrent Manager Clients can access the Manager Server through the LAN. If required, additional 24-port (#7604) or 8-port (#7603) Ethernet hubs can be attached to the IN-VSN Management Server's private LAN to enable management of multiple FC/9000 Directors. Two 14-foot Ethernet cables are provided with each FC/9000 Director to provide attachment to the Ethernet hub.

IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Server

The IN-VSN Enterprise Manager Server software is a Windows 2000-based GUI that helps simplify connectivity management with a common and consistent user interface. The Manager can run locally on the Manager Server or remotely on a LAN-attached IN-VSN Manager Client.

The Manager offers:

  • Access security with passwords, administration of valid users, user rights, and remote access restrictions

  • Enterprise management with a Fabric View showing the high-level status of all managed FC/9000 Fibre Channel Directors

  • Scalability with the capability to add, remove, or modify managed FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director

  • Traceability with audit logging and sessions status

  • Enterprise Manager Server software

The Enterprise Manager Server Switch View is designed to provide a graphical representation of each CNT FC/9000. You can open individual windows through icons in the Fabric View.

The Manager Switch View offers:

  • A user-friendly interface with graphical displays of the FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director and it components

  • Centralized configuration management and control of all operating parameters

  • Real-time interactive display of operational status and statistical performance information

  • Automatic audit logging of all system events, configuration changes, and hardware upgrades

  • Serviceability with access to all maintenance functions, such as diagnostics and firmware updates

  • Proactive notification of events with automatic "call home" alerts or pager alerts to a designated service center when service is required

FICON Management Server

The FICON Manager Server, feature #7202, supports in-band management of the FC/9000 Director by System Automation for OS/390 on IBM 9672 Parallel Enterprise G5, G6, and zSeries 900 servers. To enable in-band management on multiple Directors, each FC/9000 Director will need to be configured with the FICON Manager Server (#7202). This support provides a single point of control for managing connectivity in active I/O configurations. This type of dynamic in-band management is currently provided by IBM 9032 ESCON Directors. System Automation for OS/390 can now concurrently manage IBM 9032 ESCON Directors as well as CNT FC/9000 Directors with FICON.

FICON Cascading

The FICON Cascading Activation feature, #7203, is required for cascading, or creating Inter-Switch links, between FC/9000 Directors with FICON protocol applications. Only one feature #7203 is needed per EM Manager to enable FICON Cascading Activation between multiple Directors managed by the same EM Manager. This feature activates the firmware within the FC/9000 necessary to manage FICON configurations with up to two FC/9000 Directors between the FICON host server and the FICON storage device. This feature enables further scalability of FICON fabrics beyond the port count limits of a single FC/9000 Director. For existing FC/9000 Directors, they must first be upgraded, if necessary, to the "new" version of hardware. Refer to the above section on Scalability Options to assure the appropriate upgrade prerequisites are applied to existing Directors to obtain "new version hardware" and are at firmware level 2.3.3 or later prior to adding the FICON Cascading feature.

Warranty Extensions

All warranties for this product are provided by CNT Technologies. The current warranty for the CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Directors is 24 hours per day/7 days per week, same day service support for 13 months from the date of shipment from CNT. Warranty extensions are available at time of initial order, or for products currently under warranty with optional features #80xx. For products not currently under warranty, optional features #80xx may be used to re-establish warranty coverage effective the last day of the prior warranty coverage period. The CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director is designed to provide the connectivity necessary to make enterprise information accessible and available across multiple host systems, from various systems or devices forming a Data Center Storage Area Network (SAN). Utilizing the standard Fibre Channel interconnect technology, the FC/9000 FC Directors with XFIO2 Modules provides 200 MB/s transfer bandwidth on each Fibre Channel connection port.

The CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Directors offers:

  • High Performance with low latency. The FC/9000 FC Directors' any-to-port architecture supplies multiple simultaneous connections, each capable of up to 200 MB/s, with latency of 0.5 to 2.75 microseconds and, Cut Through Routing.

  • FIO Module ports are designed to support FICON (IBM S390), F_Port (Fabric), FL_Port(Public Loop), E_port (Interswitch Connection, requires firmware level 2.1 or later), modes of operation.

  • XFIO2 Module Ports are designed to support FICON (IBM S390), F_port (Fabric), and E_port (Interswitch Connection, requires firmware level 2.1 or later) modes of operation.

  • Easy setup and configuration. CNT IN-VSN Enterprise Manager is an integrated private LAN hardware and software solution designed for high availability operation.

  • Disaster recovery solutions. FC/9000 FC Directors enable flexibility in configurations to accommodate high availability disaster recovery environments.

  • Automatic fabric discovery. The FC/9000 FC Directors allows external host and storage to discover other SAN-enabled systems that are connected to the infrastructure (switched, non-FICON fabric).

  • Extended distance. The FC/9000 FC Directors can be configured with either shortwave or longwave fiber connections for distances up to 80 kilometers between devices. Each port on the FC/9000 is capable of supporting distances up to 100 kilometers when Fibre Channel extenders are utilized.

  • The CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director has a number of selectable options. The base FC/9000 FC Directors contains two XFIO2 I/O modules with 16 ports with the Model 001, three XFIO2 I/O Modules with 24 ports with the Model 128, and four XFIO2 I/O Modules with 32 ports with the Model 256. You can add additional 8-port FIO or XFIO2 I/O Modules for a maximum of 64, 128 or 256 ports. Each 1 Gb FIO Module must configured with eight GBICs; any combination of shortwave, longwave, or extended longwave GBICS. Each 2 Gb XFIO2 Module must be configured with eight transceivers; any combination of shortwave longwave, or extended longwave transceivers. The High Availability Option, a recommended feature, contains an additional Power Module, providing redundant power supplies. This allows dual-power source configurations to minimize power outages. The High Availability Option also contains a spare Switch Module and a redundant Control Module, offering automatic failover to help prevent loss of data access in case of failure. All hardware FRUs and firmware are also designed to be maintained and upgraded concurrently without loss of data access.

A fully configured CNT FC/9000 40U Cabinet can contain one or two Model 001 CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel 64 Port Directors, each with the High Availability Option, up to 64-ports, and external to the Cabinet, the IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server (#7600) and Client (#7201) with up to 16 Management Clients (#7201).

The Model 128 supplies a fully integrated CNT FC/9000 40U Cabinet containing the CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel 128 Port Director with a minimum of 24 ports expandable to 128 ports. Optionally, the High Availability Option (#5022) can be included. The IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server (#7600) with up to 16 Management Clients (#7201) can be ordered with the Model 128 and is external to the Cabinet.

Two 64 port FC/9000 FC Directors, Model 001, in the same CNT FC/9000 40U Cabinet can be combined with the Interconnection Kit (#4128) forming a 128 port Director, equivalent to the Model 128.

The Model 256 supplies a fully integrated CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel 256 Port Director in two adjacent 40U cabinets with a minimum of 32 ports expandable to 256 ports. Optionally, the High Availability Option (#5024) can be included. Hardware Requirements

Management Server and Ethernet Hubs

Included in the IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server Bundle (#7600) is a desktop PC running Windows 2000, a 17-inch monitor, internal and/or external modems for call home and remote diagnostics. The IN-VSN Management Console is used to perform operator and service tasks. The Server Bundle (#7600) includes a 24-port Ethernet Hub and a fourteen foot Ethernet cable. Two fourteen foot Ethernet cables are supplied with each FC/9000 Director. Additional Ethernet cables are supplied by the customer. If additional Ethernet hubs are required for connecting multiple FC/9000 Directors to the IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server, then feature #7603 can be ordered. Feature #7603 supplies a single 8-port Ethernet Hub without Ethernet cables.

The Server Bundle (#7600) requires a selection of a country kit (#96xx), based on the country where the Management Server will be installed, to supply the country-specific power cords, monitor, modem, phone line adapter, and appropriate licenses.

The IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server is required to install and service the CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director (2042 Models 001, 128, and 256). CNT Directors can be ordered without the IN-VSN Enterprise Management Server, if the customer chooses to supply the PC console. FIO, XFIO2, and Filler Module Initial Order Requirements

For the 2042 Models 001, 128, and 256, your initial order must include a quantity of XFIO2 Modules (#5210), FIO Modules (#5010), and/or FIO Filler Modules (#5910) that total the number of available slots in the specific model. The total number of these modules, in any combination, must equal the number specified below.

  • For the 2042 Model 128: 13
  • For the 2042 Model 256: 28

Summary: This feature provides upgrade hardware necessary for the Model 001 (FC/9000-64) to be able to be scaled to a 256-port and 2Gb ready configuration. 2 Gb and 1 Gb Configuration Options

The CNT FC/9000 Fibre Channel Director allows a wide range of configuration options and can be ordered with combinations of 2 Gb XFIO2 or 1 Gb FIO Modules. The basic building block is the I/O Module which contains eight Fibre Channel ports, and is available with 2 Gb or 1 Gb technology. New built base CNT FC/9000 Directors are configured with the 2 Gb XFIO2 Modules. Growth to the maximum port counts is available with either 2 Gb XFIO2 or 1 Gb FIO Modules.

  • Model 001, you can add from one to six additional 8-port FIO Modules (#5010), XFIO2 Modules (#5210), and/or Filler Modules (#5910) in any combination for a maximum of 64-ports.

  • Model 128, you can add from one to 13 additional 8-port FIO Modules (#5010), XFIO2 Modules (#5210), and/or Filler Modules (#5910) in any combination for a maximum of 128 ports.

  • Model 256, you can add from one to 28 additional 8-port FIO Modules (#5010), XFIO2 Modules (#5210), and/or Filler Modules (#5910) in any combination for a maximum of 256 ports.

The 2 Gb XFIO2 Module (#5210) supports autosensing, and will operate as either a 2 Gb port or 1 Gb port depending on the attaching device capabilities. Autosensing enables the 2 Gb XFIO2 module to support both 1 Gb and 2 Gb fabric devices. The 2 Gb XFIO2 Modules can be configured with either shortwave (#2210) or longwave (#2220) SFP transceivers, or for distances up to 35 Km or 80 Km, with the Extended Distance Longwave 2 Gb SFP transceivers (#2235 or #2280).

The 1 Gb FIO Module (#5010) supports 1 Gb fabric, 1 Gb public loop (FC-AL), and 1 Gb private loop devices. The 1 Gb FIO Module is a necessary component to include attachment of 1 Gb FC-AL devices, such as IBM 3590 and LTO tape products. The 1 Gb FIO Modules can be configured with either shortwave (#2010) or longwave (#2020) GBICs, or for distances up to 80 Km with the Extended Longwave GBIC (#2030).

Intermix of 2 Gb XFIO2 and 1 Gb FIO Modules in a FC/9000 Director enables support of both 1 Gb and 2 Gb fabric devices, as well as 1 Gb loop devices.

Any mixture of shortwave and longwave configured ports are supported, but all ports must have transceivers or GBICs ordered. Transceivers and GBICs must be ordered in increments of 8, either eight shortwave, eight longwave or a mix of shortwave and longwave.

Fiber Optic Cables

A fiber optic cable is required for attaching the 2042 FC/9000 FC Director's port Transceiver/GBIC to the host system adapters, a fibre channel storage subsystem, or another fibre channel SAN component. Fibre optical cables are customer supplied to enable maximum flexibility and compatibility in various environments, but where a limited distance connection exists, fiber optic cables can be ordered with the CNT products from IBM.

In many situations, the lengths and installation of fiber optic cables required will be unique to each customer's configuration and facility specifications. Product support services offered by IBM Global Services' Site and Connectivity Solutions can provide assistance for these unique cabling and installation requirements.

For situations where the Fibre Channel Directors and attaching subsystems are within twenty-five meters, there are features to accommodate these simple installations. Each feature provides either a multimode 50.0/125 micrometer or a singlemode 9.0/125 micrometer fiber optic cable in the available length with duplex SC connectors at both ends. Customer supplied fiber optic cables for shortwave connections must be multimode 50.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 500 meters at 1Gb, or multimode 62.5/125 micrometers for distances up to 175 meters at 1Gb; for longwave connections the fiber cable must be singlemode 9.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 10 kilometers.
