Abstract

The 2032 McDATA Intrepid 6140 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director (2032-140) supports up to 140 Fibre Channel ports for Open System and FICON attachment. From an initial configuration size of 16 ports, it scales in four-port increments to 140 ports, all within 12 unit chassis, offering you a higher density SAN connectivity solution.

IBM is expanding its portfolio of McDATA Corporation products to help address the expanding storage networking needs of its customers. The 140-port model of the McDATA's "Core to Edge" family of Fibre Channel Director products, the Intrepid 6140, enables fibre channel connectivity for larger enterprise class storage area networks (SAN).

Model Abstract 2032-140

The 2032 McDATA Intrepid 6140 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director Model 140 has a 2Gb fibre channel, up to 140 non-blocking fibre channel ports, an aggregate bandwith of up to 28,000 MB/s, high-availability connectivity technology, SAN connectivity support for FCP and FICON environments, SANtegrity security, and non-disruptive scaling in four-port increments with a minimum configuration of 16 ports.

Description

Density improvements have been enabled by the combination of standard small form factor optical transceivers, and improved packaging. Designed with 2 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) Fibre Channel technology, the Intrepid 6140 Director supports fully redundant, non-blocking switching for demanding enterprise environments. The Intrepid 6140 Director's unique design offers 128 ports on the front side and 12 ports on the rear side facilitating inter-switch connections.

For the McDATA Intrepid 6140 Director, and as features for the McDATA Intrepid 6064 Director, the following options are being announced:

SANtegrity** - this feature enables the McDATA SANtegrity Security capabilities offering enhanced SAN protection with fabric and switch binding that essentially locks-down the fabric. This ensures that the right devices are connected in the correct manner to help prevent unauthorized entry and modification of the fabric. This feature optionally is designed to improve the security of Open System FCP SANs, and is mandatory for the implementation of FICON cascading. FICON cascading enables two McDATA Intrepid Directors to be interconnected for FICON based storage networks expanding the size of the fabric beyond the limits of a single director.
A hardware warranty enhancement to provide a two hour response time for environments with critical service needs.
An enhanced version of the McDATA FC-512 Cabinet, the 2032-C40, that supports up to three of the Intrepid 6140 Director's, as well as the current Intrepid 6064 Director, the Sphereon switches and the McDATA loop switch. This cabinet has the same external dimensions as the 2032-C36, which it replaces.

The McDATA Intrepid 6140 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director is a 140-port Fibre Channel Director that supports SAN connectivity for FCP and FICON environments. With a minimum configuration of 16 ports, the Intrepid 6140 Director scales in four-port increments to 140 ports and is designed to provide non-blocking switching across all ports with an aggregate bandwidth of up to 28,000 MB/s. Each port is 2 Gb Fibre Channel technology which can operate at 2 Gb or 1 Gb speeds automatically sensing the attaching device or server characteristics. The Intrepid 6140 Director is designed to provide redundant active components that support automatic failover, helping to support continuous data access and high performance in the event of a single component failure. Other high-availability capabilities include hotswapping of all field-replaceable units, nondisruptive firmware update capability, and automatic fault detection and isolation. In addition, "call-home" and e-mail capabilities support automatically alerting support and maintenance personnel to accelerate problem resolution. Together, these features help support nondisruptive maintenance and upgrades without loss of data access.

You can use multiple Intrepid Directors and Fabric Switches to create a scalable enterprise SAN backbone that supports consolidated storage management applications such as disk sharing, tape pooling, and enterprise-wide data sharing.

Multiple Configuration Options

The McDATA "Core to Edge" family of Intrepid Directors and Switches provides significant flexibility and scalability in implementing Storage Area Networks. The Intrepid 6140 Director can be configured with up to 140 ports, and can be used as a SAN backbone with the Intrepid 6064 Director, Sphereon 3032, and Sphereon 3016 Fabric Switches offering cascading capabilities to meet your most demanding connectivity needs.

Each fibre channel port delivers up to 200 MB/sec, full-duplex data transfer bandwidth. There are two types of 4-port Modules to select from: a 4-port Universal Port Module (UPM) with four shortwave optical ports for connections up to 300 meters at 2 Gb speed, and a 4-port UPM with four longwave optical ports for connections up to 10 kilometers. The two types of 4-port UPMs can be intermixed in any combination within the Intrepid 6140 Director. For interconnectioning Intrepid Directors, there are two individual extended longwave transceivers available (features #3220 and #3235). These optional features support singlemode fiber connection distances up to 20 kilometers and 35 kilometers, respectively. Either of these extended longwave transceivers can be installed on any of the UPM ports, replacing either the shortwave or longwave optical transceiver on the UPM.

Enterprise Fabric Connectivity (EFC) Manangement

EFC Management centralizes the management of multiple, distributed Intrepid Directors and Switches in an enterprise-wide fibre channel fabric. Designed for usability, this flexible software simplifies the addition of managed Intrepid Directors and Switches as the enterprise fibre channel fabric grows. Leveraging state-of-the-art Java technology, operators can use the EFC Management software remotely from anywhere in the enterprise.

EFC Management software provides a scalable, modular architecture consisting of the EFC Server PC (#3755), the EFC Manager application (#3750), and the individual EFC Product Manager applications for each Intrepid Director and Switch. The architecture is implemented through a multi-tiered client/server networking model. You can access all management, monitoring, and diagnostic functions by running the EFC Management client application on a workstation located on an attached LAN anywhere in the enterprise.

Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Server PC

The EFC Server centralizes management of multiple McDATA Intrepid Directors and Switches in the fabric and continuously monitors their operations. The EFC Server PC may be installed in the McDATA FC-512 Cabinet and provides the following hardware:

A laptop PC, with two Ethernet LAN connections - one for a private LAN that supports communication with the Directors and Switches and the second for an optional connection to a corporate intranet for remote access
A modem programmable for worldwide application
A zip drive

The EFC Server provides continuous monitoring, logging, and alerting; centralizes log files, configuration databases, and firmware distribution; and supports centralized "call-home", e-mail, service, and support operations. A single EFC Server can manage up to 48 McDATA Intrepid Directors or Switches, and up to 4 concurrent users can access the EFC Server.

A 24-port Ethernet hub is included with each McDATA FC-512 Cabinet. In situations where the McDATA Switches will not be installed in the FC-512 Cabinet, it can be ordered separately. Each McDATA Intrepid Director requires two ethernet ports for the high-availability redundancy, and each McDATA Switch requires one ethernet port. The maximum configuration, 48 Directors and/or Switches per EFC Management Server, will require multiple hubs to be interconnected on the EFC PC Server's private LAN.

Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Product Manager Software

The EFC Management Software application is a Java-based GUI that provides a common and consistent management interface to the EFC Product Managers. The EFC Manager can run locally on the EFC Server platform and can be accessed remotely from any network-attached workstation in the enterprise. The EFC Manager provides:

Access security with passwords, administration of valid users, user rights, and remote access restrictions
Enterprise management with a product view showing the high-level status of all managed Directors
Scalability with the capability to add, remove, or modify managed Directors
Traceability with audit logging and sessions status
Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Product Manager software

The EFC Management Software (feature #3750) is required for each EFC Server PC (feature #3755), and can support up to 48 individual Intrepid Directors and Switches that have EFC Product Managers.

The EFC Product Manager applications provides the user interface for each McDATA Intrepid Director or Switch. You can open individual EFC Product Managers through icons in the EFC Manager product view. The EFC Product Manager provides:

A user-friendly interface with graphical displays of the Director and its components
Centralized configuration management and control of all operating parameters
Real-time interactive display of operational status and statistical performance information
Automatic audit logging of all system events, configuration changes, and hardware upgrades
Serviceability with access to all maintenance functions, such as diagnostics and firmware updates
Proactive notification of events with automatic "call home" alerts or e-mail to a designated service center when service is required

The EFC Product Manager is required for each Intrepid Director, Models 6140 and 6064, features 6140 and 6300, respectively The Fabric Switches, Sphereon 3232 and 3216, provide an embedded Web-based management function suitable for small, entry configurations. You can add the EFC Product Manager, features #3779 and #3778 respectively, to each Fabric Switch to enable management by the EFC Management Server. The Loop Switch, ES-1000, includes a EFC Product Manager as part of the base configuration.

FICON In-Band Management Server

The FICON In-Band Management Server (#6003) provides additional code within the McDATA Intrepid 6140 Director to support in-band (through the FICON connection) management of the Director by System Automation for OS/390 and zSeries 900 Servers. System Automation for OS/390 provides a single point of control for managing connectivity in active I/O configurations. It takes an active role in detecting unusual I/O conditions and lets you view and change paths between a processor and an Input/Output device using the dynamic switching capability of the Director. This type of dynamic in-band management is currently in the 9032 ESCON Directors.

SANtegrity**

The SANtegrity feature (#6006 and #6007) provides a set of security enhancements for the Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Manager to protect your SAN fabric from unauthorized changes or access. SANtegrity enables a fabric and director/switch binding that essentially locks downs the fabric so that the appropriate devices are connected in the manner you defined, and not changed by accidental or unauthorized access to the fabric. This feature enhances the security of Open System FCP environments, and is mandatory for implementing FICON Cascading. FICON Cascading is the ability to interconnect to two Intrepid Directors in FICON environments and increase the size of your FICON fabric beyond the limits of a single Director. This feature requires the EFC Management Server and Software, and can be used with the FICON In-Band Management Server or Open System Management Server.

To enable the enhanced security features of SANtegrity, all Intrepid Directors and Switches interconnected within the same fabric must have SANtegrity feature installed. The McDATA ED-5000 Director and the ES-1000 Loop Switch do not support SANtegrity. If the McDATA fabric contains a McDATA ED-5000 and/or an ES-1000 do not install the SANtegrity feature.

Open Systems Management Server (OSMS)

The Open Systems Management Server (#6000) provides additional code within the Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Manager to extend the management capability to include in-band (through the Fibre Channel connection) management by an open system based third party SAN management application. This enables discovery, monitoring, and fabric management of McDATA Intrepid Directors and Switches by supporting SAN application frameworks. This optional feature requires the EFC Management Server and Software, and is mutually exclusive with the FICON In-Band Management Server.

Warranty Extensions

The McDATA Intrepid 6140 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director includes a thirteen-month, from date of shipment, 24x7 same day on-site warranty provided by McDATA. Several features are available for extending McDATA's warranty on the hardware and the various software components for up to a maximum warranty period of five years. These warranty extension features can be ordered with the initial Intrepid 6140 Director, or added as a MES, provided the Director is still under warranty. Once the warranty period has expired, additional maintenance options are available directly from McDATA.

McDATA FC-512 Cabinet (2032-C40)

The McDATA Fabricenter** FC-512 Cabinet, the IBM 2032-C40, is required for the McDATA Intrepid 6140 Director. The FC-512 cabinet can contain up to three Intrepid 6140 Directors. The Intrepid 6064 Director and Sphereon Switches can also be mounted in the FC-512 Cabinet. McDATA Intrepid Directors and Switches may be combined within the same FC-512 Cabinet.

The FC-512 Cabinet, with a footprint of only seven square feet, includes:

36U of usable mounting space
Two power distribution units (PDU), each with fourteen outlets
A 24-port Ethernet Hub
Space for mounting the EFC PC Server.

The specific number of McDATA Intrepid Directors and Switches that can be mounted in one FC-512 Cabinet depends upon two factors: space and power outlets on the PDUs. Each McDATA Sphereon Switch and the Intrepid Director contains two power supplies and requires two power outlets. When the EFC PC Server is mounted in the FC-512 Cabinet, two power outlets are required (the modem is used external to the Cabinet, and requires its own power source), and each Ethernet Hub (included with the FC-512 cabinet) requires one power outlet.

The cabinet has a maximum of 36U of available space that can be utilized.

For customers with existing McDATA FC-512 Cabinets, the 2032-C36, only one Intrepid 6140 can be field installed, feature #6282, if there is 12U of contiguous space available.

Some example configurations of the FC-512 Cabinet, 2032-C40, are:

Three Intrepid 6140 Directors with the EFC Management Server;
Four Intrepid 6064 Directors with the EFC Management Server;
Two Intrepid 6140 Directors, one Intrepid 6064 Director, and the EFC Management Server; or
Two Intrepid 6140 Directors, six Sphereon 3232 Switches, two Sphereon 3216 Switches, one ES-1000 Loop Switch and the EFCM Server.

The McDATA ED-5000 Director and the ES-1000 Loop Switch do not support SANtegrity. If the McDATA fabric contains a McDATA ED-5000 and/or an ES-1000 do not install the SANtegrity feature.

McDATA FC-512 Cabinet Installation Specify Features

Summary: You can indicate in your initial plant order (IPO) the installation of McDATA products and/or the EFC Server Console into the McDATA FC-512 Cabinet (2032-C36/C40).
Specify features (#3756, #2080, #3181, #3184, #6081, and #6281) provide for installation of McDATA Switch and Enterprise Director offerings into the McDATA FC-512 Cabinet during assembly in the plant of manufacture.
The FC-512 Cabinet has 36 EIA units of available space, and can support up to twelve dual powered devices (24 outlets): McDATA Intrepid Directors, Sphereon Switches and Loop Switches. In configuring the FC-512, these two limitations must be considered.
Please see the Special Features section for features that provide installation capability into the McDATA FC-512 Cabinet within the customer's facility.

Fiber Optic Cables

Summary: A fiber optic cable is required to attach a port on McDATA Intrepid Directors and Switches to host system adapters, a fibre channel storage subsystem, or another fibre channel SAN component.
