Description

IBM Enterprise Storage Area Network

The IBM Enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN) is a high-speed switched fabric of centrally managed, heterogeneous servers and storage systems. This SAN fabric can help companies improve overall efficiency and performance of IT operations by enabling centralized data management, data access, and consolidated backups.

The key to this SAN infrastructure is high system and data availability to support 24x7 business requirements. For instance, today's heterogeneous application servers demand continuous data access without impact on performance, should any switched fabric component fail. Likewise, rapidly growing e-business, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and business intelligence applications cannot afford a multiple-application recovery scenario if a hardware component needs to be replaced or software needs to be upgraded.

High-Performance, Nonstop Switching Service

To help provide high data availability across a SAN, IBM offers McDATA's "Enterprise to Edge" family of Enterprise Fibre Channel Directors and Fabric Switches, which provides the scalability demanded by rapidly growing e-business and other mission-critical applications. The McDATA product designs are based upon the IBM ESCON Director, which has provided the level of industry-leading data availability, performance, and data integrity required by today's most demanding data centers.

The Director and Fabric Switches feature redundant power supplies and cooling fans. The McDATA ED-6064 Enterprise Director and the ED-5000 with the High Availability Option provides redundant active components that support automatic failover, helping to enable continuous data access and high performance in the event of a single component failure. Other high-availability capabilities include hot swapping for all field-replaceable units, nondisruptive firmware updates, and automatic fault detection and isolation. In addition, "call-home" and e-mail capabilities automatically alert support and maintenance personnel to accelerate problem resolution. Together, these features help enable nondisruptive maintenance and upgrades without loss of data access.

You can use multiple McDATA Directors and Fabric Switches to create a scalable enterprise SAN backbone that supports consolidated storage management applications such as disk sharing, tape pooling, and enterprise-wide data sharing.

Industry-Standard Fibre Channel Connectivity

The McDATA Directors provide fibre channel connectivity to the following:

  • IBM 9672 Parallel Enterprise G5, G6 and zSeries 900 Servers with FICON adapters.

  • IBM and non-IBM servers with fibre channel adapters: IBM pSeries, RS/6000 (AIX), RS/6000 SP, IBM xSeries, Netfinity, Sun Solaris, and non-IBM Intel-based servers with Windows NT or Windows 2000.

  • IBM Storage with FICON adapters: Magstar 3590 Model A60 Tape Controller and IBM Enterprise Storage Server.

  • IBM and non-IBM disk storage with fibre channel attachment: IBM Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) and EMC Symmetrix.

Multiple Configuration Options

The McDATA "Enterprise to Edge" family of Fibre Channel Directors and Switches provides you with significant flexibility and scalability in implementing your Storage Area Network. The ED-6064 Enterprise Director can be configured with up to 64 ports, and can be used as a SAN backbone with the ES-3032 and ES-3016 Fabric Switches offering cascading capabilities to meet your most demanding connectivity needs.

The ED-6064 supports fully redundant, nonblocking 64-port switch performance for FICON and Fibre Channel applications. It can be configured with a minimum of four 4-Port Modules providing 16 Fibre Channel ports, and scaled in increments of one, up to sixteen 4-Port Modules offering a total of 64 ports. Each fibre channel port delivers 100 MB/sec, full-duplex data transfer bandwidth. There are three types of 4-Port Modules to select from: a 4-Port Module with four shortwave optical ports for connections up to 500 meters, a 4-port Module with four longwave optical ports for connections up to 10 kilometers, and a 4-Port Module with three shortwave and one longwave optical ports. The three types of 4-Port Modules can be intermixed in any combination within the ED-6064.

Enterprise Fabric Connectivity (EFC) Management Software

EFC Management software centralizes the management of multiple, distributed Directors in an enterprise-wide fibre channel fabric. Designed for usability, this flexible software simplifies the addition of managed Directors as the enterprise fibre channel fabric grows. Leveraging state-of-the-art Java technology, operators can use the EFC Management software remotely from anywhere in the enterprise.

EFC Management software provides a scalable, modular architecture consisting of the EFC Server, the EFC Manager application, and the EFC Product Manager application. The architecture is implemented through a multitiered client/server networking model. You can access all management, monitoring, and diagnostic functions by running the EFC Management client application on a workstation located anywhere in the enterprise.

Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Server PC

The EFC Server centralizes management of multiple McDATA Directors and Switches in the fabric and continuously monitors their operations. The EFC Server PC may be installed in the McDATA FC-512 Cabinet and provides the following hardware:

  • A laptop PC, with two Ethernet LAN connections-one fora private LAN that supports communication with the Directors and Switches and the second for an optional connection to a corporate intranet for remote access

  • A modem programmable for worldwide application

  • A zip drive

The EFC Server provides continuous monitoring, logging, and alerting; centralizes log files, configuration databases, and firmware distribution; and supports centralized "call-home," e-mail, service, and support operations. A single EFC Server can manage up to 48 McDATA Directors or Switches, and up to 4 concurrent users can access the EFC Server.

A 24-port Ethernet hub is included with each McDATA FC-512 Cabinet (2032-C36). In situations where the McDATA Switches will not be installed in the FC-512 Cabinet, it can be ordered separately. Each McDATA ED-6064 Director requires two Ethernet ports for the High Availability redundancy, as does the ED-5000 Director with the HA Option. Each McDATA Switch requires one Ethernet port. The maximum configuration, 48 Directors and/or Switches per EFC Management Server, will require multiple hubs to be interconnected on the EFC PC Server's private LAN.

Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Product Manager Software

The EFC Management Software application is a Java-based GUI that provides a common and consistent management interface to the EFC Product Managers. The EFC Manager can run locally on the EFC Server platform and can be accessed remotely from any network-attached workstation in the enterprise. The EFC Manager provides:

  • Access security with passwords, administration of valid users, user rights, and remote access restrictions

  • Enterprise management with a product view showing the high-level status of all managed Directors

  • Scalability with the capability to add, remove, or modify managed Directors

  • Traceability with audit logging and sessions status

  • Enterprise Fabric Connectivity Product Manager software

The EFC Management Software (feature #3750) is required for each EFC Server PC (feature #3755), and can support up to 48 individual McDATA Directors and Switches that have EFC Product Managers.

The EFC Product Manager applications provides the user interface for each McDATA Director or Switch. You can open individual EFC Product Managers through icons in the EFC Manager product view. The EFC Product Manager provides:

  • A user-friendly interface with graphical displays of the Director and its components

  • Centralized configuration management and control of all operating parameters

  • Real-time interactive display of operational status and statistical performance information

  • Automatic audit logging of all system events, configuration changes, and hardware upgrades

  • Serviceability with access to all maintenance functions, such as diagnostics and firmware updates

  • Proactive notification of events with automatic "call home" alerts or e-mail to a designated service center when service is required

The EFC Element Manager is required for each McDATA Director, ED-6064 and ED-5000, features #6300 and #3775 respectively. The Fabric Switches ES-3032 and ES-3016, provide an embedded web-based management function suitable for small, entry configurations. You can add the EFC Product Manager, features 3773 or 3772 respectively, to each Fabric Switch to enable management by the EFC Management Server. The Loop Switch, ES-1000, includes a EFC Product Manager as part of the base configuration.

Ethernet Hub

A 24-port Ethernet hub supports the 2 connections required by the High-Availability Option. This hub also supports multiple Directors. One LAN connection is required for each control processor card in the Director.

The maximum configuration of 36 Directors (each with the High-Availability Option) requires 4 hubs for the maximum of 73 LAN connections - 1 for connection to the EFC Server and 72 for the Directors.

McDATA FC-512 Cabinet

One or two Directors may be mounted in the McDATA FC-512 Cabinet, a single 24" wide cabinet with a footprint of only 7 square feet. This cabinet includes the Ethernet hub and space for installing a EFC Server. Dual power cords support the high availability features.

The McDATA Fabricenter** Cabinet, IBM 2032-C36, is required for the McDATA ED-6064 Director. The FC-512 cabinet can contain up to four ED-6064 Directors. The McDATA Switches can be mounted in the FC-512 Cabinet, in other supported customer supplied cabinets or racks, or used as standalone units in tabletop configurations. McDATA Directors and Switches may be combined within the same FC-512 Cabinet.

The FC-512 Cabinet, with a footprint of only seven square feet, includes:

  • 36U of usable mounting space
  • Two power distribution units (PDU), each with fourteen outlets
  • A 24-port Ethernet Hub
  • Space for mounting the EFC PC Server

The specific number of McDATA Directors and Switches that can be mounted in one FC-512 Cabinet depends upon two factors: space and power outlets on the PDUs. Each Switch and the ED-6064 Director contains two power supplies and requires two power outlets, and the ED-5000 Director with the HA Option Power Supply requires two power outlets. When the EFC PC Server is mounted in the FC-512 Cabinet, two power outlets are required (the modem is used external to the Cabinet, and requires its own power source), and the Ethernet Hub requires one power outlet. The ED-6064 is 9U, the ED-5000 is 18U, the ES-3032 is 1.5U, and the ES-3016 and ES-1000 are 1U. The cabinet has 18U contiguous in the bottom section, and 18U contiguous in the top section with the EFC Server PC mounting between these two sections. McDATA Directors and Switches can utilize all of this space. Some example configurations of the FC-512 Cabinet are: four ED-6064 Directors; one ED-5000 Director and two ED-6064 Directors; two ED-6064 Directors with ten ES-3032, ES-3016, or ES-1000 Switches; or twelve ES-3032, ES-3016 or ES-1000 Switches.

Product Positioning

The IBM Enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN) is a high-speed switched fabric of centrally managed, heterogeneous servers and storage systems. This SAN fabric can help companies improve over all efficiency and performance of IT operations by enabling centralized data management, data access, and consolidated backups.

The IBM Enterprise SAN supports:

  • Workgroup SANs which require low-cost Fibre Channel connectivity to a small number of Windows servers

  • Departmental SANs which require high-performance, scalable and flexible Fibre Channel connectivity for a large number of Windows or UNIX application servers.

  • Data Center SANs which require the highest availability of Fibre Channel connectivity for large numbers of Windows and UNIX application servers.

Data Center SANS

Data Center SAN infrastructure must provide the highest levels of system and data availability to support 24x7 business requirements. For instance, today's heterogeneous application servers demand continuous data access without impact on performance should any switched fabric component fail. Likewise, rapidly growing e-business, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and business intelligence applications cannot afford a multiple-application recovery scenario if a hardware component needs to be replaced or software needs to be upgraded.

The McDATA Enterprise Fibre Channel Directors supports e-business and other mission-critical applications which require the highest levels of Fibre Channel switching availability.

The McDATA Directors' High Availability features complement the High Availability features of IBM Enterprise Storage Server (ESS), and Magstar 3494 Tape Libraries or Magstar 3590 tape systems with the Magstar 3590 Model A60 Tape Controllers.

With the addition of FICON switching capabilities, McDATA Directors support IBM 9672 Parallel Enterprise G5, G6 and zSeries 900 Servers with FICON Channel Cards and ESS and Magstar 3590 Model A60 Tape Subsystems with FICON adapters. FICON Management Server support for in-band management by System Automation for OS/390 and zSeries 900 Servers is also available.

McDATA Directors are the logical choice for customers requiring up to 32 ports per FICON Director; customers with IBM AIX and non-IBM UNIX-based and Intel-based servers with Windows NT/2000 and Fibre Channel Director requirements; and customers requiring integrated operation of a mixture of FICON Directors and Fibre Channel Directors under a common switch management system.

A wide range of supported Fibre Channel server and storage options are currently available. As shipped, the unit contains the High Availability redundant path and control electronics, two redundant power supplies, redundant cooling units, rails for mounting in the FC-512, and two power cords (#1057) that attach to the power distribution units with the Cabinet. Also included are two 10 foot Ethernet cables for attaching to the Ethernet hub, documentation and necessary service tools. There are two placement features provided, feature 6081 and 6082, one of which must be specified when ordering the ED-6064. When the ED-6064 is ordered together with the Cabinet, 2032-C36, feature 6081 is selected, and the 2032-C36 and all 2032-064's that are to be installed at the manufacturing plant into the Cabinet must be on the same Multi-System and System order. If a Cabinet, 2032-C36, already exists at the customer location with sufficient space (9U contiguous), and the ED-6064 is to be installed in that Cabinet, then feature 6082 is specified.

The ED-6064 Product Manager is mandatory with each ED-6064 to enable Director management by an EFC Management Server. The EFC Management Server PC (#3755) and EFC Management Software (#3750) can be ordered with the ED-6064. Each EFC Management Server can manage up to 48 McDATA Directors and Switches attached via the Ethernet hub. When ordering the EFC Management Server PC it can be installed in the Cabinet by specifying feature 3756 if also ordering a new Cabinet, or feature 3757 if the ED-6064 is being installed into an existing Cabinet that does not already contain an EFC Management Server PC. Power cords for attachment to the Cabinet power distribution units will be supplied.

The Open System Management Software, feature 6000, is available to support third party SAN management software from vendors such as Tivoli, Veritas, or BMC. This feature is enabled through the EFC Manager and extends the management capabilities to include in-band (via Fibre Channel) management by the open system host based SAN management application. Fiber optic cabling is required to attach each fibre channel port on the ED-6064 to another fibre channel device. The ports on the ED-6064 require the new small form factor LC connectors.

Fiber optic cables are typically customer supplied, and details depend on the specific configuration being implemented. For simple configurations, there are two cable features available with the ED-6064: feature 1811, which provides a ten meter 50 micron/125 micron multimode cable with the new smaller form factor duplex LC connectors at both ends; and feature 1810, a ten meter 50 micron/125 micron multimode cable with the new smaller form factor duplex LC connector on one end and a duplex SC connector at the other end. Feature 1800, a cable coupler, is available to connect the LC/SC cable (#1810) to existing SC cables.

ED-6064 Configuration Notes

While 1 Gb (FPM) and 2 Gb (UPM) port cards can be intermixed in the McDATA ED-6064, to enable 2 Gb operations, all port cards must be UPM cards (#6210, #6211, #6213). If any of the 1 Gb 4-port cards (#6010, #6011 and #6012) are installed, then the ED-6064 is only capable at operating at 1 Gb Fibre Channel speeds.

For existing customers who have already purchased a McDATA ED-6064 Enterprise Fibre Channel Director, 2 Gb/s operation requires that all of the existing 1 Gb 4-port modules be removed and replaced with the 2 Gb 4-port Modules (#6210, #6211, #6212). Operation at 2 Gb also requires installation of either Upgrade Kit (#6220 or #6221), depending upon configuration of the director.

Fiber Optic Cables

Summary: A fiber optic cable is required for attaching a port on McDATA Enterprise Directors and Switches to host system adapters, a fibre channel storage subsystem, or another fibre channel SAN components. The cable can be customer supplied, or where a limited distance and shortwave optical connection exists, can be ordered with the McDATA products from IBM. In many situations, the lengths and installation of fiber optic cables required will be unique to each customer's configuration and facility specifications. Product support services offered by IBM Global Services' Site and Connectivity Solutions can provide assistance for these unique type of cabling and installation requirements. But for situations, where the fibre channel component and attaching subsystems are within thirty meters, and are using a shortwave optical connection, there are two features now available to accommodate these simple installations. Each feature provides a multimode 50.0/125 micrometer fiber optic cable in the available length with duplex SC connectors at both ends. Customer supplied fiber optic cables for shortwave connections must be multimode 50.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 500 meters, or multimode 62.5/125 micrometers for distances up to 175 meters; for longwave connections the fiber cable must be singlemode 9.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 10 kilometers. The connector is a duplex SC type.
