The IBM TotalStorage SAN32B-2 fabric switch (2005-B32) introduces 4 Gb Fibre Channel capabilities. This is designed to provide improved performance supporting storage networking demands for higher throughput and enhanced security.

The IBM TotalStorage SAN32-B fabric switch offers the following:

  • 32 Fibre Channel ports that:

    • Provide multiple simultaneous connections, each capable of throughput speeds of 1, 2, or 4 Gb per second with a maximum latency of 2 microseconds

    • Auto sense and self-negotiate to the highest speed (1, 2, or 4 gigabits) supported by the server, storage, or switch

    • Self-configure as F_ports, FL_ports, or E_ports

  • Operation with SFP optical transceivers that:

    • Support up to 4 Gb speeds with 4 Gb short wave SFPs for distances up to 300 meters.

    • Support 1 and 2 Gb speeds with 2 Gb long wave SFPs for distances up to 10 kilometers.

    • Can be used in any combination of 1, 2, or 4 gigabit short wave and long wave SFPs.

    • Increased ordering and deployment flexibility, since SFPs are not included within the base SAN32B-2 product but are ordered separately with a minimum order of 16 SFPs required on with the initial model B32 switch purchase, and additionally in increments of 8 SFPs, up to a total of 32 SFPs.

  • 1 U form factor enables enhanced port density and rack space utilization. The SAN32B-2 fabric switch can also be ordered with country specific power cords for tabletop use.

  • Hot-pluggable power supplies and fans support enhanced availability by enabling dual power source configurations and non-disruptive power supply and fan maintenance.

  • Web browser interface compatible with any Java-enabled browser is designed to provide configuration monitoring and diagnostics using the Internet or intranet.

  • Scalable ports on demand (16, 24, or 32 ports) to accommodate a broad range of connectivity solutions for a wide variety of host and storage types (optional Port Activation feature available for upgrade to 24 and 32 ports).

  • Compatibility with IBM TotalStorage SAN b-type switch family (IBM 2005, 2109 and 3534).

  • Auto Fabric discovery allows external host and storage systems to discovery other supported SAN-enabled systems that are connected to the fabric.

  • Fabric Services such as Advanced Zoning, Web Tools, and Fabric Watch.

Optional features

B32 Additional Port Activation (#7510-#7513)

  • Additional Port Activation - enables upgrade from 16 to 24 or 32 ports.

  • The base B32 model activates the first sixteen ports (0 to 15). You may optionally purchase port activation for ports sixteen to twenty-three (first eight port increment), and ports twenty-four to thirty-one (second eight port increment). An affordable sixteen-port activation bundle is available for plant order only, to provide the B32 full thirty-two ports enabled from the factory. Port activation features do not include fiber optic transceivers.

B32 Fabric Manager V4 Max Domains (#7551)

  • Fabric Manager V4 Max Domains optional feature is designed to enhance capabilities of the Java-based Fabric Manager application to help simplify management of up to eight fabrics. The Fabric Manager V4 optional feature provides enhanced security management, additional RAS features, and call home capabilities. The Fabric Manager V4 optional feature delivers:
    • Enhanced security management
    • Additional RAS features
    • Call-home capabilities

Fabric Manager V4 requires Internet Explorer Web browser with Windows 2000 and Windows XP, or alternatively Netscape Web browser with Solaris 7 and Solaris 8.

B32 Remote Switch Activation (#7552)

  • Remote Switch Activation extends the distance of SAN fabric by enabling two Fibre Channel switches to interconnect with a pair of CNT Open System Gateways across an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) WAN.

B32 Extended Fabric Activation (#7553)

  • Extended Fabric Activation extends SAN fabrics beyond the Fibre Channel standard 10 km by optimizing the internal switch buffers to maintain performance on ISL at distances up to 70 kilometers.

B32 Advanced Security Activation (#7554)

  • Advanced Security Activation is designed to enable policy-based security mechanisms integrated within Fabric Operating System V2.6, V3.1, and V4.1. To enable advanced security capabilities, all switches within the IBM SAN Switches Fabric must be configured with their respective Fabric operating system version (2.6, 3.1, and 4.1) before activating the Advanced Security feature license key. When activated across the IBM SAN Switch Fabric, the Advanced Security Activation feature supports the following security capabilities:
    • Centralized security management (trusted switches)
    • Fabric-wide security policies to control access
    • Port-level access control
    • Switch-level access control
    • Management access controls (Telnet, SNMP, HTTP, API)
    • Encryption of management data such as passwords
    • Strong and non-reputable authentication between switches

B32 Performance Bundle Activation-Plant (#7555)

  • Performance Bundle Activation is plant order only, and supports both Enhanced Inter-Switch Link (ISL) Trunking and Performance Monitoring capabilities.

Performance Monitoring helps identify end to end bandwidth usage by host/target pairs and is designed to provide information for capacity planning.

ISL Trunking enables Fibre Channel packets to be efficiently distributed across multiple Inter-Switch connections (links) between two SAN b-type fabric switches, while preserving in-order delivery. Both SAN b-type fabric switches must have ISL Trunking activated.

Enhanced ISL Trunking is supported between two B32 models and enables Fibre Channel packets to be distributed across up to eight 4 Gbps capable ISLs for a combined bandwidth of up to 32 Gbps. When connecting the 4 Gbps capable B32 model to legacy 2 Gbps capable b-type fabric switch models, ISL Trunking is supported with link speeds operational at 2 Gbps and Fibre Channel packets distributed across up to four ISLs for a combined bandwidth of up to 8 Gbps.

B32 Performance Monitoring Activation-Field (#7556)

  • Performance Monitoring Activation is field order only, and provides Performance Monitoring capability to help identify end to end bandwidth usage by host/target pairs and is designed to provide information for capacity planning.

B32 Enhanced Trunking Activation-Field (#7557)

Enhanced ISL Trunking Activation is field order only.
