Description

The IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch H08 (2005-H08) and H16 (2005-H16) deliver next-generation performance and function for Fibre Channel SANs, including

  • 1 and 2 Gbit/sec autosensing capability

  • Full forward-and backward-compatibility with other members of the IBM TotalStorage SAN Switch family

  • Improved affordability and ease of management

The base function for H08 and H16 switch models includes Web tools, advanced zoning, and hot code activation standard in Fabric OS 4.2.

Several optional features are available for both models, including:

  • Full Fabric Activation -- supports connection to the maximum supported number of switches in a fabric, E_Port Inter Switch Link (ISL) function on all local switch ports. This feature will also provide the Fabric Watch capability when ordered for the SAN Switch H08.

  • Extended Fabric Activation -- increases ISL buffer credits to support disaster tolerance solutions with up to 70 Km distance between sites.

  • Fabric Manager V4 Maximum Supported Domains -- simplifies management of up to eight fabrics and enhances security management, additional RAS features, and call-home capabilities.

  • Performance bundle activation -- supports ISL-Trunking with each trunk consisting of up to four links, and up to eight Gb per second bandwidth, as well as support for performance monitoring tools for measuring end-to-end activities.

  • Advanced Security Activation -- enables policy-based security mechanisms integrated within Fabric Operating System.

Additional base functionality highlights common to both H08 and H16 models:

  • Fibre Channel autosensing ports self-negotiate to the highest speed supported by attached devices.

  • Universal ports designed to self-configure as F-ports, FL-ports, or E-ports.

  • Hardware zoning (implemented via firmware-accessible table per output port) helps to permit or deny delivery of frames to any particular destination port address.

  • Extensive diagnostics and system-monitoring capabilities.

  • Small form-factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceivers support combinations of short wavelength (SW) and long wavelength (LW) optical media.

Optional Features

Fabric Manager V4 Max Domains for H08/H16 (#7701)

  • Fabric Manager V4 Max Domains optional feature is designed to enhance capabilities of the Java-based Fabric Manager application to help simplify management of up to eight fabrics. The Fabric Manager V4 optional feature provides enhanced security management, additional RAS features, and call home capabilities. The Fabric Manager V4 optional feature delivers:
    • Enhanced security management
    • Additional RAS features
    • Call-home capabilities

Fabric Manager V4 requires Internet Explorer Web browser with Windows 2000 and Windows XP, or alternatively Netscape Web browser with Solaris 7 and Solaris 8.

H08 Remote Switch Activation (#7702)

H16 Remote Switch Activation (#7802)

  • Remote Switch Activation extends the distance of SAN fabric by enabling two Fibre Channel switches to interconnect with a pair of CNT's Open System Gateways across an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) WAN

H08 Extended Fabric Activation (#7703)

H16 Extended Fabric Activation (#7803)

  • Extended Fabric Activation extends SAN fabrics beyond the Fibre Channel standard 10 km by optimizing the internal switch buffers to maintain performance on ISL at distances up to 70 kilometers.

H08 Full Fabric Activation (#7720)

  • Full Fabric Activation provides connectivity of up to eight other switches. Activation keys enable all eight ports as universal (F_Port, FL-Port or E_Port) ports, and enable Advanced Zoning and Fabric Watch.

Advanced Zoning logically groups a SAN fabric into an unlimited number of secure, private zones.

This feature will also provide the Fabric Watch capability for the SAN Switch Model H08. Fabric Watch is an intelligent Fabric monitor that enables each switch to identify and isolate potential faults, as well as optimize fabric-wide performance.

H16 Full Fabric Activation (#7820)

  • Full Fabric Activation provides connectivity of up to eight other switches. Activation keys enable all eight ports as universal (F_Port, FL-Port or E_Port) ports, and enable Advanced Zoning.

Advanced Zoning logically groups a SAN fabric into an unlimited number of secure, private zones.

H08 Performance Bundle Activation (#7721)

H16 Performance Bundle Activation (#7821)

  • Performance Bundle Activation adds support for ISL-Trunking with up to four links, and up to eight Gb per second bandwidth; and performance monitoring tools for measuring end-to-end activities.

H08 Advanced Security Activation (#7723)

H16 Advanced Security Activation (#7823)

  • Advanced Security Activation is designed to enable policy-based security mechanisms integrated within Fabric Operating System Versions 2.6, 3.1, and 4.1. To enable advanced security capabilities, all switches within the IBM SAN Switches Fabric must be configured with their respective Fabric OS version (2.6, 3.1, and 4.1) before activating the Advanced Security feature license key. When activated across the IBM SAN Switch Fabric, the Advanced Security Activation feature offers the following comprehensive security capabilities:
    • Centralized security management (trusted switches)
    • Fabric-wide security policies to control access
    • Port-level access control
    • Switch-level access control
    • Management access controls (Telnet, SNMP, HTTP, API)
    • Encryption of management data such as passwords
    • Strong and non-reputable authentication between switches
