Functional capabilities offer flexibility and ease-of-use

The DS6800 offers functional capabilities to help increase flexibility and usability.

  • LUN and volume management including:

    • Logical unit number (LUN) and volume creation and deletion are non-disruptive. When a LUN or volume is deleted, the capacity can be reformatted and re-used.

    • LUNs and volumes can be configured to span arrays. Therefore, the size of the volume/LUN is not constrained by the size of the array.

    • LUNs up to 2 TB are supported. CKD volumes up to 65,520 cylinders are also supported.

  • Addressing capabilities including: More logical subsystems (LSS), logical devices, and logical paths can be defined versus the current Enterprise Storage Server (ESS). The DS6800 can offer:
    • Up to 32 logical subsystems
    • Up to 8,192 logical volumes
    • Up to 1,040 volume groups

  • Simplified storage management for zSeries with z/OS: For zSeries and z/OS environments, the DS6800 can support a new 65,520 cylinder 3390 volume. This new volume option has a capacity of approximately 55.7 GB. It can help relieve addressing constraints, improve disk resource utilization, and improve storage administrator productivity by providing the ability to consolidate multiple disk volumes into a single address.

  • Administration and management:

    • New online and offline configuration capability features an all new Web-based graphical user interface (GUI) designed to offer increased ease of use.

    • A single command line interface (CLI) supports both logical configuration and copy services.

DS6800 system provides performance and configuration options

The DS6800 utilizes the PowerPC 750GX 1 GHz processor, 4 GB of cache, and from two to eight 2Gb Fibre Channel/FICON host ports. It also comes with authorization for up to 16 internal disk drive modules, offering up to 4.8 TB of physical storage capacity. Up to seven DS6000 Expansion Enclosures can be attached to a DS6800, supporting up to 128 disk drives for a total of up to 38.4 TB of storage.

Depending on workload, the DS6800 can provide up to four times the maximum host I/O operations per second of an ESS Model 750.

A variety of configuration options

Physical capacity for the DS6800 and DS6000 Expansion Enclosure is purchased via disk drive sets. A disk drive set contains four identical disk drives (same capacity and rpm). A minimum of four drives are required for the DS6800 and eight drives are required for the DS6000 Expansion Enclosure. Disk drive sets are available in 73 GB (15,000 rpm), 146 GB (10,000 rpm and 15,000 rpm), and 300 GB (10,000 rpm) sizes. Price, performance, and capacity can further be optimized to help meet specific application and business requirements through the intermix of 73 GB (15,000 rpm), 146 GB (10,000 rpm), 146 GB (15,000 rpm), or 300 GB (10,000 rpm) disk drives.

Flexibility with support for RAID-5 and RAID-10

Physical capacity for the DS6800 system can be configured as RAID-5, RAID-10, or a combination of both. RAID-5 can offer excellent performance for most applications, while RAID-10 can offer better performance for selected applications, in particular, high random write content applications in the open systems environment. RAID-10 combines RAID-1 (mirroring) with RAID-0 (striping). Each drive within a RAID-10 array is mirrored to a second drive within the array, and to optimize performance, data is striped across the drives within the array.

The decision to configure capacity as RAID-5 or RAID-10, as well as the amount of capacity to configure for each type, can be made at any time. RAID-5 and RAID-10 arrays can be intermixed within a DS6000 series and the physical capacity can be logically reconfigured at a later date (for example, RAID-5 arrays can be reconfigured into RAID-10 arrays, which is disruptive to the machine).

Connectivity with Fibre Channel/FICON host ports

The DS6800 system offers connectivity with the availability of two to eight Fibre Channel/FICON host ports. The 2Gb Fibre Channel/FICON host ports, which are offered in long-wave and shortwave, auto-negotiate to either 2 Gbps or 1 Gbps link speeds. This flexibility supports the ability to exploit the potential benefits offered by higher performance, 2 Gbps SAN-based solutions, while also maintaining compatibility with existing 1 Gbps infrastructures. In addition, with the maximum of eight host ports enabled, the DS6800 system can be configured with an intermix of Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) and FICON. This can help protect your investment in Fibre Channel adapters, and increase your ability to migrate to new servers.

The DS6800 system offers extensive connectivity support across a broad range of server environments -- including IBM eServer zSeries, iSeries, and pSeries servers as well as servers from Sun, HP, and other Intel-based providers. This rich support of heterogeneous environments and attachments, along with the flexibility to easily partition the DS6800 system storage capacity among the attached environments, helps support storage consolidation requirements and dynamic, changing environments.

Rich set of business continuance solutions

The DS6800 system supports a rich set of copy service functions and management tools that can be used to build solutions to help meet business continuance requirements.

  • Point-in-Time Copy solutions

IBM TotalStorage FlashCopy is designed to provide a Point-in-Time Copy capability for logical volumes. FlashCopy creates a physical point-in-time copy of the data, with minimal interruption to applications, and makes it possible to access both the source and target copies immediately.

FlashCopy supports many advanced capabilities, including:

    • Data Set FlashCopy: Allows a FlashCopy of a data set in a zSeries environment.

    • Multiple Relationship FlashCopy: Allows a source to have FlashCopy relationships with multiple targets simultaneously. This flexibility allows you to initiate up to 12 FlashCopy establishes on a given logical unit number (LUN), volume, or data set, without needing to first wait for or cause previous relationships to end.

    • Incremental FlashCopy: Provides the capability to "refresh" a LUN or volume involved in a FlashCopy relationship. When a subsequent FlashCopy establish is initiated, only the data required to bring the target current to the source's newly established point-in-time is copied. The direction of the "refresh" can also be reversed, in which case the LUN or volume previously defined as the target becomes the source for the LUN or volume previously defined as the source (and now the target).

    • FlashCopy To A Remote Mirror Primary: Lets you establish a FlashCopy relationship where the target is also a remote mirror primary volume. This enables you to create full or incremental point-in-time copies at a local site and then use remote mirroring commands to copy the data to the remote site.

    • Consistency Group Commands: Allows the DS6800 to hold off I/O activity to a LUN or volume until the FlashCopy Consistency Group command is issued. Consistency groups can be used to help create a consistent Point-in-Time Copy across multiple LUNs or volumes, and even across multiple DS6800 systems.

    • Inband Commands Over Remote Mirror Link: In a remote mirror environment, allows commands to manage FlashCopy at the remote site, can be issued from the local or intermediate site, and transmitted over the remote mirror Fibre Channel links. This eliminates the need for a network connection to the remote site solely for the management of FlashCopy.

FlashCopy is an optional feature to the DS6800 system, and is available with the DS6800 Point-in-Time Copy feature numbers 52xx (1750-511).

  • Remote Mirror and Copy solutions

The DS6800 system supports several hardware-based Remote Mirror and Copy solutions:

    • IBM TotalStorage Metro Mirror: This solution is designed to provide real-time mirroring of logical volumes between two DS6800 systems that can be located up to 300 km from each other. It is a synchronous copy solution where write operations are completed on both copies (local and remote site) before they are considered to be done.

    • IBM TotalStorage Global Copy: This is a nonsynchronous long-distance copy option for data migration and backup.

    • IBM TotalStorage Global Mirror: Global Mirror is a long-distance remote copy solution across two sites using asynchronous technology and is designed to provide the following:

      • Support for virtually unlimited distance between the local and remote sites, with the distance typically limited only by the capabilities of the network and channel extension technology being used. This can better enable you to choose your remote site location based on business needs and enables site separation to add protection from localized disasters.

      • A consistent and restartable copy of the data at the remote site, created with little impact to applications at the local site.

      • Data currency where, for many environments, the remote site lags behind the local site an average of three to five seconds, helping to minimize the amount of data exposure in the event of an unplanned outage. The actual lag in data currency experienced will depend upon a number of factors, including specific workload characteristics and bandwidth between the local and remote sites.

      • Dynamic selection of the desired Recovery Point Objective (RPO) based upon business requirements and optimization of available bandwidth.

      • Efficient synchronization of the local and remote sites with support for failover and failback modes, helping to reduce the time required to switch back to the local site after a planned or unplanned outage.

All of the above remote mirroring solutions use Fibre Channel as the communications link between the primary and secondary machines. The Fibre Channel ports used for Remote Mirror and Copy can be configured either as a dedicated remote mirror link or as a shared port between remote mirroring and Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) data traffic.

The Remote Mirror and Copy solutions listed above are optional features to the DS6800 system. They are available with the DS6800 Remote Mirror and Copy feature numbers 53xx. The DS6800 system can participate in remote mirror and copy solutions with the ESS Model 750, ESS Model 800, and DS8000 series systems.

IBM performance innovations for the zSeries environments

The DS6800 system supports the following previously introduced IBM performance innovations for zSeries environments.

  • FICON extends the ability of the DS6800 system to deliver high bandwidth potential to the logical volumes needing it, when they need it. Older technologies are limited by the bandwidth of a single disk drive, but FICON, working together with other DS6800 system functions, provides a high-speed pipe supporting multiplexed operation. FICON is an optional feature on the DS6800 system, and is available with the FICON Attachment feature number 5915.

  • Parallel Access Volumes (PAV) enables a single zSeries server to simultaneously process multiple I/O operations to the same logical volume, which can help to significantly reduce device queue delays. This is achieved by defining multiple addresses per volume. With Dynamic PAV, the assignment of addresses to volumes can be automatically managed to help the workload meet its performance objectives and reduce overall queuing. PAV is an optional feature for the DS6800 system and is available with the PAV feature numbers 51xx. PAV also requires the purchase of the FICON Attachment feature number 5915.

  • Multiple Allegiance expands the simultaneous logical volume access capability across multiple zSeries servers. This function, along with PAV, enables the DS6800 to process more I/Os in parallel, helping to improve performance and enabling greater use of large volumes.

  • I/O Priority Queuing allows the DS6800 system to use I/O priority information provided by the z/OS Workload Manager to manage the processing sequence of I/O operations.

Licensing options for copy functions can reduce costs

The DS6000 series offers licensing options, which are available for the DS6800 FlashCopy (Point-in-Time Copy) feature numbers 52xx and Remote Mirror and Copy feature numbers 53xx, as follows:

  • If the function is used with open systems data only, a license is required for only the total physical capacity configured as Fixed Block (FB).

  • If the function will be used with zSeries data only, a license is required for only the total physical capacity configured as Count Key Data (CKD).

  • If the function is used with both open systems and zSeries data, a license is required for the total physical capacity of the DS6800 system including the DS6000 Expansion Enclosures.

In addition, the license scope (FB, CKD, or entire machine) is client managed through an IBM Web-based application. This allows you to change the license scope on a given machine as your business requirements change.

Management tools and utilities to improve administrator productivity

The DS6800 system supports the following management tools and utilities:

  • Storage management console: A storage management console is used as a platform for configuration, management, and service software required to manage the DS6800 system. A storage management console is required for the DS6800 system, and is to be either supplied by the customer or optionally ordered from IBM. If a storage management console is ordered, it is placed as a separate order from the DS6800 system. The minimum requirements needed for the storage management console can be found in the Hardware requirements section of this announcement.

  • IBM TotalStorage DS Storage Manager: The DS Storage Manager is a single integrated Web-based (HTML) graphical user interface (GUI) that offers the following:

    • Offline configuration: Allows a user to create logical configurations and apply them to an online DS6800 system. This offline configuration tool can be installed on a customer server and can be used for the configuration of a DS6800 system at initial installation.

    • Online configuration: Provides real-time configuration management support.

    • Copy services: Allows a user to execute copy services functions.

The online configuration and copy services are available via a Web browser interface installed on a customer-supplied storage management console. The DS Storage Manager is provided with the DS6800 system at no additional charge.

  • IBM TotalStorage DS Command Line Interface (CLI): The DS Command Line Interface (CLI) is a single CLI that has the ability to perform a full set of commands for both configuration and copy services activities. The application will have three modes of execution:

    • Single shot mode will connect, issue a single command, and then return to the user.

    • Script mode will connect, execute a predefined customer script, and then return to the user.

    • Interactive mode will place the user in a shell environment with a static connection to the storage subsystem so the user can execute multiple commands.

This CLI has the ability to dynamically invoke copy services functions. This can help enhance your productivity since it eliminates the previous requirement for you to create and save a task using the GUI. The DS CLI is available with the DS6800 system at no additional charge. The DS CLI client is available for the AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Novell NetWare, Sun Solaris, and Microsoft Windows operating system environments.

  • IBM TotalStorage DS Open Application Programming Interface (API): The DS Open Application Programming Interface (API) supports routine LUN management activities, such as LUN creation, mapping, and masking, and the management of Point-in-Time Copy and remote mirroring. It supports these activities through the use of a standard interface as defined by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S). The DS Open API is implemented through the IBM TotalStorage Common Information Model Agent (CIM Agent) for the DS Open API, a middleware application designed to provide a CIM-compliant interface. The interface allows Tivoli and third-party CIM-compliant software management tools to discover, monitor, and control the DS6000 series systems. The DS Open API and CIM Agent are provided with the DS6800 system at no additional charge. The CIM Agent is available for the AIX, Linux, and Microsoft Windows operating system environments.

  • IBM TotalStorage Multi-path Subsystem Device Driver (SDD): SDD supports load balancing and enhanced data availability capability in configurations with more than one I/O path between the host server and the DS6800 system. Load balancing can help reduce or eliminate I/O bottlenecks that occur when many I/O operations are directed to common devices via the same I/O path. SDD can also help avoid a potential single point of failure with capability to automatically reroute I/O operations when a path failure occurs, thereby supporting enhanced data availability capability. SDD is provided with the DS6800 system at no additional charge. Fibre Channel (SCSI-FCP) attachment configurations are supported in the AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare, and Sun Solaris environments.

Determining the extent of IBM authorization (license size) required for each licensed function is a customer responsibility. Your disk marketing specialist can help you with this activity.

Management and activation of licensed functions is a customer responsibility:

  • Management refers to use of the Disk Storage Feature Activation (DSFA) application to assign the order confirmation code to your DS6800 machine and select the license scope.

  • Activation refers to the retrieval and installation of the feature activation code into the DS6800 system. The feature activation code is made available by IBM and obtained using the DSFA application.

These activities are a customer responsibility during the initial activation of a licensed function and when the extent of authorization is increased.

Below is an overview of licensed function enablement, authorization, management, activation, and enforcement. In the context of DS6800 licensed functions, the following terms apply:

  • "DS6800 system" refers to the DS6800 base enclosure and all physically attached DS6000 Expansion Enclosures:
    • A DS6800 base enclosure refers to the Model 511.
    • A DS6000 Expansion Enclosure refers to the Model EX1.

  • "Enablement" refers to the purchase of a feature number to technically activate the associated licensed function.

  • "Authorization" refers to the purchase of a feature number to establish the extent of IBM authorization (license size in terms of physical capacity) for use of an associated licensed function. This is also referred to as the "authorization level".

  • "Management" refers to client use of the Disk Storage Feature Activation (DSFA) application to assign an order confirmation code to a specific DS6800, select the license scope, assign the license value, and deactivate a licensed function.

  • "Activation" refers to the client retrieval and installation of the feature activation code into the DS6800 system. The feature activation code is made available by IBM and obtained using the DSFA application.

  • "Enforcement" refers to logic and other technology within the DS6800 Licensed Machine Code to maintain compliance with established IBM authorization levels.

Enablement

Each licensed function is enabled for a DS6800 system through acquiring 5xxx feature numbers.

   Licensed Function Feature Number
   ----------------------- --------------
   Operating Environment 50xx
   Parallel Access Volumes 51xx
   Point-in-Time Copy 52xx
   Remote Mirror and Copy 53xx
   FICON Attachment 5915

Each licensed function feature number purchased for a DS6800 enables that function for the entire DS6800 system.

Authorization

The extent of IBM authorization for the use of a licensed function on a DS6800 system is established by acquiring 5xxx feature numbers on the DS6800.

The same 5xxx feature numbers acquired to enable a licensed function also establish the extent of IBM's authorization.

Each 5xxx feature number on a DS6800 establishes the authorization level for the entire DS6800 system. For example, a DS6800 system with a Model 511 base enclosure and two Model EX1 Expansion Enclosures requires the acquisition of 5xxx feature numbers only on the Model 511. Therefore, for licensed functions authorized on the basis of physical capacity, the authorization level(s) established with the acquisition of 5xxx feature numbers on the Model 511 must also cover the physical capacity of the attached Model EX1 Expansion Enclosures.

The authorization level provided by each feature number is stated within the feature number description. The unit represents physical capacity, where a TB (terabyte) equals one trillion bytes. A DS6800 system's total authorization level for a given licensed function is the sum of the units (terabytes) associated with all the acquired feature numbers for that DS6800.

When the feature number description does not contain a value (such as FICON attachment feature number 5915), the extent of IBM authorization is not based upon physical capacity. Instead, use of the licensed function is authorized across the entire system. Only one feature number is required per DS6800 system to establish the extent of IBM authorization, regardless of the physical capacity within the DS6800 system.

Management

Licensed functions are managed using the Disk Storage Feature Activation (DSFA) application at:

http://www.ibm.com/storage/dsfa

To access DSFA, you will be required to enter information about your DS6800 machine. You can find this information on the Storage Unit General Properties page in the IBM TotalStorage DS6000 series Storage Manager application.

Management activities include:

  • Assignment of an order confirmation code
  • Selection of a license scope
  • Assignment of a license value
  • Deactivation of a licensed function

Order confirmation code

With the purchase of each 5xxx feature number, IBM provides an order confirmation code. To activate the function your machine, you must assign the order confirmation code to your DS6800 system (using the DS6800 machine serial number). This activity is performed using the DSFA application.

You will not be able to retrieve a feature activation code for a purchased licensed function until you have assigned the order confirmation code to serial number of the DS6800 for which is was acquired.

License scope

Licensed functions are activated and enforced within a defined license scope. License scope refers to the type of storage, and therefore the type of servers, that the function can be used with:

  • Fixed Block (FB):
    • The function can only be used with data from Fibre Channel attached servers.

  • Count Key Data (CKD):
    • The function can only be used with data from FICON-attached servers

  • Both FB and CKD (ALL):
    • The function can be used with data from all attached servers.

Selected licensed functions have multiple license scope options, while other functions have only a single license scope.

----------------------- ---------------------
Operating Environment FB or ALL(1)
Point-in-Time Copy FB, CKD, or ALL
Remote Mirror and Copy FB, CKD, or ALL
Parallel Access Volumes CKD
FICON Attachment CKD

Note: (1) If the FICON attachment license feature number 5915 is present, the operating environment license scope will default to ALL. If feature number 5915 is not present, the license scope will default to FB.

If a licensed function has multiple license scope options, you will be required to select a license scope during the initial retrieval of the feature activation code. This activity is performed using the DSFA application.

Note that the license scope is not selected during the purchase of 5xxx feature numbers. These feature numbers only establish the extent of IBM authorization (generally in terms of physical capacity), regardless of the storage type.

You can also change the license scope using the DSFA application after a licensed function has been activated. A new feature activation code will be generated and when you install it into the machine, the function will be activated and enforced using the newly selected license scope. Only an increase in the license scope (changing FB or CKD to ALL) is a non-disruptive activity. A lateral change (changing FB to CKD or changing CKD to FB) or a reduction of the license scope (changing ALL to FB or CKD) is a disruptive activity and requires a machine IML.

License Value

Licensed functions are activated and enforced based upon an assigned license value.

License value refers to extent of IBM authorization and is referenced as either:

  • Terabytes (TB) of physical capacity for variable-sized licensed functions.
  • ON or OFF for system-level licensed functions.

For the DS6800, the feature activation codes will always be generated using the total license value for each variable-sized licensed function and ON for each system-level licensed function, unless you assign a license value of zero (0.0 TB) or OFF, respectively.

You can change the license value assignment using the DSFA application. You would generally only perform this activity when you want to deactivate a licensed function.

Deactivation

Assigning a license value of zero (0.0 TB) or OFF provides the ability to deactivate (disable) a licensed function. A new feature activation code will be generated and when you install it into the machine, the function will be deactivated during the next IML of the machine.

You can also reactivate a deactivated licensed function by changing the license value to a non-zero value. A new feature activation code will be generated and when you install it into the machine, the function will be activated. Reactivation is a non-disruptive activity.

When you deactivate a licensed function using the DSFA application, the 5xxx feature numbers assigned to your machine (using the order confirmation code) remain assigned to the machine. This means that you do not need to repurchase your 5xxx feature numbers if you want to reactivate the licensed function at a future date.

Activation

Licensed functions are activated by the installation of feature activation codes into the DS6800 system. The feature activation codes are made available by IBM and are obtained using the DSFA application.

Enforcement

The DS6800 Licensed Machine Code contains logic and other technology to maintain compliance with established authorization levels. For each storage type, you will be allowed to logically configure physical capacity (that is, disk drives) only up to the extent of your authorization level for that storage type. If you have multiple licensed functions with the same license scope, the extent of IBM authorization is defined by the licensed function with the lowest authorization level.

Copy services planning and implementation

The implementation and use of DS6000 series copy services functions require appropriate planning. Detailed information is available in DS6000 series publications.

Storage management console

A storage management console is required for the DS6800, and is to be either supplied by the customer or optionally ordered from IBM. Refer to the Hardware requirements section for additional information.

Note: The upper limit of wet bulb temperature must be derated (lowered) 1.0 degree C for every 274 meters of elevation above 305 meters.

Limitations

  • The amount of physical capacity within a DS6800 system that can be logically configured for use will be enforced by the DS6800 Licensed Machine Code to maintain compliance with the extent of IBM authorization established for licensed functions activated on the machine. The DS6800 Licensed Machine Code will not allow the logical configuration of physical capacity beyond the extent of IBM authorization.

  • The deactivation of an activated licensed function, or a lateral change or reduction in the licensed scope, is a disruptive activity and requires a machine IML.

    • A lateral change is defined as changing the license scope from FB to CKD or from CKD to FB.

    • A reduction is defined as changing the license scope from ALL to FB or from ALL to CKD.

  • There is no upgrade path from ESS, DS8000, FAStT, or DS4000 models to the DS6800 and DS6000 Expansion Enclosures.

Hardware Requirements

Licensed machine code

The DS6800 system requires Licensed Machine Code (LMC) level 5.0.0, or later.

Some DS6000 series features and functions may not be available or supported in all environments. Current information on supported environments, prerequisites, and minimum operating systems levels is available at:

http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk/ds6000/interop.html

DS6000 series licensed functions

Each DS6800 licensed function feature number enables the use of, and establishes the extent of, IBM authorization for licensed function(s) acquired for a DS6800 system. Each licensed function feature number is applicable only for the specific DS6800 (by serial number) for which it was acquired and is not transferable to another serial numbered DS6800.

Operating Environment License

An operating environment license is required on every DS6800 system. The extent of IBM authorization acquired through the DS6800 feature numbers (5xxx) must cover the physical capacity of the DS6800 system, where system is defined as the base enclosure and all attached expansion enclosures.

If the operating environment license has not been acquired and activated on the machine, disk drives installed within the DS6800 system cannot be logically configured for use. Upon activation, disk drives can be logically configured up to the extent of authorization.

As additional disk drives are installed, the extent of IBM authorization must be increased by acquiring additional DS6800 feature numbers (5xxx). Otherwise, the additional disk drives cannot be logically configured for use.

Storage management console

A storage management console is used as a platform for configuration, management, and service software required to manage the DS6800 system. A storage management console is required for the DS6800 system, and is to be either supplied by the customer or optionally ordered from IBM. If a storage management console is ordered, it is placed as a separate order from the DS6800 system. Below are the minimum requirements needed for the storage management console on the DS6800 system:

  • Hardware Requirements:
    • 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 Processor
    • 256 KB cache
    • 256 MB memory
    • 1 GB of disk space for Storage Manager Software

  • Operating Environments Supported:
    • Microsoft Windows 2000
    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server

If the storage management console is to be ordered, IBM suggests the IBM 8141 ThinkCentre M51 Model 23U (8141-23U) Desktop system with a 3.0 GHz/800 MHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor. If a monitor is also required, IBM suggests the IBM 6737 ThinkVison C170 (6737-66x or 6737-K6x) 17-inch full flat shadow mask CRT color monitor with a flat screen (16-inch viewable image size).

SFP orders

The DS6800 system host interface requires a minimum of two host attachment ports to be enabled, one per each RAID controller card. For the DS6800 system, a minimum of two SFP connectivity ports (one per controller) and a maximum of eight SFPs are available for direct connection to host servers or switched SAN fabrics. The SFPs are available for host connections in Short Wave SFP Pairs (feature number 1310) and Long Wave SFP Pairs (feature number 1315). Short Wave SFPs are for use with fiber cable lengths of 300 meters or less. Long Wave SFPs are used for cable distances up to 10 km (6.2 miles).

If the DS6800 (1750-511) is to be attached to the DS6000 Expansion Enclosure (1750-EX1), eight Short Wave SFPs will be included in the order of the DS6000 Expansion Enclosure.

Remote Mirror and Copy

To use Remote Mirror and Copy, the DS6800 Remote Mirror and Copy features (530x) must be purchased for both the primary and secondary DS6800 system. Remote Mirror and Copy requires the installation of at least one Fibre Channel/FICON host port to be enabled on each DS6800 system in a remote mirror and copy configuration to serve as the remote mirror and copy communications link. For higher availability, IBM recommends at least two host ports enabled per DS6800 system be used for the remote mirror and copy connectivity.

Remote Mirror and Copy is supported with the use of SAN fabric products, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) products, and channel extenders. A current list of supported environments, configurations, networks, and products is available at:

http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk/ds6000/interop.html

Vendors should be consulted regarding hardware and software prerequisites when using their products in a DS6800 system remote mirror and copy configuration. IBM is not responsible for third-party products.

IBM supports the use of remote mirror and copy over the network technologies that are currently supported by the channel extender products, including Fibre Channel, Ethernet/IP, ATM-OC3, and T1/T3. Evaluation, qualification, approval, and support of remote mirror and copy configurations using channel extender products are the sole responsibility of the channel extender vendor. The vendor should be contacted for its distance capability, line quality requirements, as well as SAN and WAN attachment capabilities.

Global Mirror

Global Mirror has the following, additional prerequisites:

  • A Point-in-Time Copy function (DS6800 feature numbers 520x) must be purchased for the secondary DS6800 system.

  • If Global Mirror will be used during failback on the secondary DS6800 machine(s), a Point-in-Time Copy function authorization must also be purchased on the primary DS6800 machine.

In the event of a planned or unplanned outage, recovery procedures are required to achieve a consistent and restartable copy of the data at the remote site. Scripts and software can be used to help automate these procedures.

Software Requirements

Current information on servers, operating systems, host adapters, and connectivity products supported by the DS6800 system is available at:
