Abstract

The IBM 1740, part of the DS4000 Midrange Disk system products, is a 2 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) storage expansion enclosure.

Model Abstract 1740-710

The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 EXP710 Fibre Channel Storage Expansion Unit available for selected DS4000 Midrange Disk Systems, expands the IBM TotalStorage DS4000 family by offering a new 14-bay, 2 Gbps, rack-mountable Fibre Channel (FC) drive enclosure. Enhancements include support for improved reliability and efficiency utilizing internal switch technology to attach to each disk drive within the EXP710 enclosure.

The EXP710 can be used with the IBM TotalStorage DS4500, DS4400, and DS4300 with Turbo Midrange Disk Systems that have been updated to the latest firmware level provided with the IBM TotalStorage DS4000 Storage Manager V9.10. The EXP710 is designed to support the same 2 Gbps Fibre Channel Disk Modules available for the IBM TotalStorage DS4000 EXP700 Fibre Channel Storage Expansion Unit and can scale to over two terabytes (TB) of disk storage capacity per enclosure using the higher capacity Disk Modules. The EXP710 can be used with EXP700 Storage Expansion Units on the same DS4500, DS4400, and DS4300 with Turbo Disk Systems. A new EXP700 Switched Enclosure Service Module (ESM) option is also available to upgrade current EXP700 enclosures to the equivalent internal switching capabilities as the EXP710 for the supported DS4000 Disk Systems.

Description

IBM TotalStorage EXP710 Storage Expansion Unit

The IBM TotalStorage EXP710 Fibre Channel Storage Expansion Unit available for connection to selected DS4000 Midrange Disk Systems, is a disk drive enclosure that when attached to the IBM TotalStorage DS4500, DS4400, or DS4300 with Turbo Midrange Disk Systems enables high performance storage solutions for midrange and entry enterprise business-critical applications. The EXP710 is a 3U, rack mountable enclosure that supports up to fourteen hot-swappable 2 Gbps FC slim-high disk drive modules. There are six 2 Gbps DS4000 FC disk drive modules available (18.2 GB, 36.4 GB, and 73.4 GB, at 15,000 rpm; and 36.4 GB, 73.4 GB, and 146.8 GB operating at 10,000 rpm), providing a wide selection of sizes and speeds for various applications needs. The various drive modules can be installed in any position within the EXP710, and mixed within the enclosure without restriction. Utilizing the 146.8 GB drive modules, you can configure over 2 TB of of disk capacity within a single 3U enclosure.

The EXP710 supports dual FC loops operating at 2 Gbps attaching to the supported DS4000 Midrange Disk Systems to provide redundancy and support high availability. Within the EXP710, the redundant Enclosure Service Modules (ESM) utilize a fibre channel switched technology attaching directly to each of the dual ported disk drive modules for additional redundancy and high availability. Each EXP710 accommodates up to four shortwave LC-style Small Form factor Pluggable (SFP) Modules, (feature number 2210). Depending upon the specific configuration and placement of the EXP710 within the supported DS4000 system, the actual number of SFP Modules required can vary from two to four. The EXP710 includes two redundant power supplies that support dual-power source configurations, and redundant cooling components that are hot-swappable, enabling concurrent maintenance operations. Included with the EXP710 are the rail mounting kit, two rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) power cords, and product documentation. Specify features, #98xx, are available for ordering a pair of country-specific wall outlet power cords, if required.

The EXP710 attachment to DS4500, DS4400, and DS4300 Midrange Disk Systems requires that these controllers be updated to firmware level 06.10.xx.xx or later. This firmware is provided with Storage Manager V9.10 and must be installed prior to attaching the EXP710. The latest level of Storage Manager and DS4000 firmware can be obtained by visiting:

http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/support/fastt/

The EXP710 is designed to interoperate with existing EXP700 enclosures attached to the same supported DS4000 Disk System up to the maximum limits of enclosures and disk drives for the specific DS4000 Disk System. The DS4500 and the DS4400 have a maximum of up to sixteen EXP710 and/or EXP700 enclosures with a maximum of 224 disk drives. The DS4300 with Turbo has a maximum of seven EXP710 and/or EXP700 enclosures with a maximum of 112 disk drives. When attaching EXP710 enclosures to the DS4000 Disk Systems, any 1 Gbps FAStT EXP500 Storage Expansion enclosures (machine type 3560) must be removed.

Switched enclosure modules for the EXP700 Expansion Unit

For DS4000 Disk System configurations with a large number of disk drives, you can upgrade existing EXP700 Storage Expansion Units with the new Switched Enclosure Service Modules (Switched ESMs) to obtain the improved performance and fault isolation benefits that the EXP710 provides. The Switched ESMs feature (feature #3501), applies only to EXP700s that are being attached to DS4500, DS4400, and DS4300 with Turbo Disk Systems. These systems must be updated to the latest firmware level provided with the IBM TotalStorage DS4000 Storage Manager V9.10 prior to installation of the new Switched ESMs, and the same configuration limitations as described for the EXP710 apply.
