Description

The IBM TotalStorage EXP700 Expansion Unit expands the highly scalable, high-performance DS4000 family with a 14-bay, 2 Gbps, rack-mountable Fibre Channel (FC) disk drive enclosure. Used with the DS4500, DS4300, DS4400, FAStT500, and FAStT200 Midrange Disk systems, the EXP700 Expansion Unit is designed to provide incremental support for over two terabyte of disk storage per unit. When used with the DS4500, DS4300 and the DS4400 Midrange Disk systems, it provides a full end-to-end 2 Gbps FC storage solution, extending the DS4000 family with the latest Fibre Channel technology.

The EXP700 Expansion Unit supports the following slim-profile, dual-loop, hot-swappable disk drive modules:

  • 18.2 GB 15,000 rpm, 2 Gbps FC HDD
  • 36.4 GB 15,000 rpm, 2 Gbps FC HDD
  • 73.4 GB 15,000 rpm, 2 Gbps FC HDD
  • 146.8 GB 15,000 rpm, 2 Gbps FC HDD
  • 36.4 GB 10,000 rpm, 2 Gbps FC HDD
  • 73.4 GB 10,000 rpm, 2 Gbps FC HDD
  • 146.8 GB 10,000 rpm, 2 Gbps FC HDD
  • 300 GB 10,000 rpm, 2 Gbps FC HDD

The 2 Gb Fibre Channel disk modules can also be used with the FAStT EXP500 Storage Expansion Unit (3560-1RU/1RX), and with the FAStT200 storage controller (3542) operating at 1 Gb. This is intended to provides a growth path for future usage of these drives with the EXP700 Expansion Unit.

A PCI-X/133 MHz, 2 Gbps FC host bus adapter is being introduced for attaching DS4000 Midrange Disk systems to IBM eServer xSeries and other Intel-based servers. The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 FC2-133 Host Bus Adapter is a 64-bit, low-profile adapter that supports auto-sensing for 1 Gbps or 2 Gbps operations on point-to-point FC-AL-2 and switched fabric topologies with FC SCSI (FCP) and IP protocols.

IBM TotalStorage DS4000 EXP700 Expansion Unit

The IBM TotalStorage EXP700 Storage Expansion unit is a highly available, fully redundant disk drive enclosure that when attached to the DS4500, DS4300, DS4400, FAStT500, and FAStT200 Midrange Disk systems enables high-performance storage solutions for mid-range and enterprise business-critical applications. The EXP700 Expansion Unit is a 3U rack-mountable enclosure that supports up to fourteen hot-swappable, 2 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) slim-high disk drive modules. The 2 Gbps FC disk drive modules (18.2 GB, 36.4 GB, 73.4 GB, and 146.8 GB operating at 15,000 rpm; and a 36.4 GBm 73.4 GB, 146.8 GB and 300 GB operating at 10,000 rpm), provide a wide selection of sizes and speeds for various application needs. The various drive modules can be installed in any position within the EXP700 Expansion Unit, and intermixed within the enclosure in any any combination. Utilizing the 300 GB drive modules, you can configure over four terabytes of disk capacity within a single 3U enclosure.

The EXP700 Expansion Unit supports dual FC loops operating at either 2 Gbps or at 1 Gbps with each disk drive module being dual ported for redundancy and high availability. Each EXP700 Expansion Unit accommodates up to four shortwave LC-style Small Form factor Pluggable (SFP) Modules, (feature number 2210; P/N: 19K1271). Depending upon the specific configuration and placement of the EXP700 Expansion Unit within the DS4000 system, the actual number of SFP Modules required can vary from two to four. When connecting to the FAStT200, FAStT500, or EXP500, the LC/SC Fiber Cable Adapter (5702, 19K1250) or equivalent is required. The adapter is an eight-inch 50 micron multimode fiber cable with an SC plug (male connector) with an LC plug or receptacle (male or female connector) that is used to attach an LC/LC cable from the Expansion Unit. The EXP700 includes two redundant power supplies that support dual power source configurations, and redundant cooling components that are hot-swappable, enabling concurrent maintenance operations. Included with the EXP700 Expansion Unit are the rail mounting kit, two rack Power Distribution Unit power cords, and the option to order a pair of country-specific wall outlet power cords.

While the 2 Gbps EXP700 Expansion Unit complements the DS4500, DS4300, and the DS4400 for a complete 2 Gbps Fibre Channel storage solution, it is also supported operating at 1 Gbps FC speed with the FAStT500, and FAStT200 Midrange Disk systems. On any of the DS4000 storage products, the EXP700 Expansion Unit can be intermixed with the EXP500, a ten-drive-bay, 1 Gbps FC storage enclosure. When using the EXP700 Expansion Unit with the FAStT500 or FAStT200, or intermixing the EXP700s and EXP500s, the EXP700 Expansion Unit must be set into 1 Gb FC mode. The maximum number of EXP700 Expansion Units that can be attached to the DS4500 and DS4400 is sixteen, eight per dual-loop configuration, supporting up to 224 disk drives. When intermixing with EXP500s, or attaching to the FAStT500 and FAStT200, the following charts define the maximum configurations per dual-loop configuration. The FAStT500 and DS4400, with two additional drive-side miniHUBs installed, have capability for two dual-loop drive configurations.

IBM TotalStorage DS4000 FC2-133 Host Bus Adapter

The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 FC2-133 Host Bus Adapter is a half-length, low-profile, 64/32-bit PCI-X host adapter that can be installed in supported xSeries and other Intel-based host servers. It supports advanced PCI-X architecture and is backward compatible to current PCI xSeries servers supporting 33, 66, and 133 MHz PCI. It is based on 2 Gbps Fibre Channel technology that can autosense and operate at 2 Gbps or 1 Gbps depending on the characteristics of the attaching Fibre Channel device. This host bus adapter is capable of hot-plugging and being added to servers without powering down. Specific server requirements and capabilities should be first verified. The DS4000 FC2-133 supports point-to-point, FC-AL, FC-AL-2, and switched fabric topologies with FC SCSI and IP protocols. The connection interface is a single shortwave, LC-style plug connector. It can be used to attach the DS4500, DS4300, DS4400, FAStT500, FAStT200 HA, FAStT200, and IBM TotalStorage SAN Switches.
