Abstract

The IBM 1724 TotalStorage DS4100 Midrange Disk System Model 100 expands the IBM family of Fibre Array Storage Technology (FAStT) highly scalable, storage offerings with an entry-level solution to support data archiving, reference data, and near-line storage applications.

Model Abstract 1724-100

The IBM 1724 DS4100 Model 100 is a 3U, rack-mountable enclosure built on 2 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) technology designed to provide highly available RAID-protected, economical storage. It can help address the needs of fixed content and data reference applications that require large amounts of storage capacity, but do not require the high utilization and access capabilities associated with FC disk drive storage.

The DS4100 supports applications running on IBM eServer pSeries and xSeries servers as well as servers from Sun, HP, and other Intel-based servers. The DS4100 comes with authorization for up to 14 internal disk drive modules and the authorization to attach up to 3 DS4000 EXP100 Expansion Units for a total of up to 56 disk drives and up to 14 TB of storage capacity.

This entry-level storage solution supports Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) disk drives. You can scale the DS4100's storage capacity, and with the attachment of up to three DS4000 EXP100 Storage Expansion Units, the server can help address a range of storage requirements for SAN environments.

The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 family of storage products are designed to offer a set of building blocks for Fibre Channel (FC)-based SANs, whether you are just starting or expanding an existing storage network. The DS4000 product family offers scalable storage capacity ranging from 36 GB to over 56 TB to support growing storage requirements. DS4000 Disk Systems are designed to be easy to install and manage using the DS Storage Manager that is included with every DS4000 storage product. The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 family offers various controller models at different performance and price points to help address varying SAN needs.

Multiple DS4000 Midrange Disk systems can be centrally managed from a common DS4000 management console located virtually anywhere within an existing LAN infrastructure. Use DS4000 advanced copy service functions, such as FlashCopy and Remote Mirror to help address data protection and disaster recovery needs.

DS4000 storage products offer various options for disk drive attachment. Depending on the particular DS4000 model, you have the choice of using high performance and highly reliable Fibre Channel disks with the FC Storage Expansion Unit for DS4000 your mission-critical server production data operations, or the DS4000 EXP100 Expansion Unit with Serial ATA disks for data archival, reference data and near-line applications.

Key potential benefits of the DS4000 family of storage products include:

  • High availability support - dual processors and many redundant hardware components

  • Scalability - from 36 GB to over 56 TB

  • Performance - excellent throughput to help address application needs

  • Advanced functions to support business continuance - FlashCopy, VolumeCopy, and Remote Mirror

Newest DS4000 offering - IBM TotalStorage DS4100 Midrange Disk System

The DS4100, the newest member of the DS4000 family, is a rack-mountable enclosure built upon 2 Gbps Fibre Channel (FC) technology that can help bring RAID-protected, yet economical storage. The DS4100 can help satisfy the needs of various fixed content and data reference applications that require large amounts of storage capacity but do not have the high utilization and access capabilities offered by Fibre Channel disk drive storage. The DS4100 provides entry-level capabilities with high availability and scalability features you have come to expect with the DS4000 family. The 3U rack-mountable enclosure contains dual RAID controllers and multiple SAN connectivity options used in conjunction with up to three DS4000 EXP100 Expansion Units for a complete storage solution.

Key elements of the DS4100 are:

  • Dual, high-performance RAID controller card, with two 2 Gbps host ports

  • Support for up to 14 internal SATA disk drives

  • Support for RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10

  • 512 MB of write-back cache, 256 MB per controller, with battery backup protection for up to three days

  • Authorization for up to 56 disk drives in conjunction with 3 DS4000 EXP100 Expansion Units

  • DS4000 Storage Manager V8.42 with a single host group partition, expandable to either four, eight, or 16 storage partitions

  • FlashCopy option for quick point-in-time copies of logical disks

  • Attachment to a wide range of industry-standard SAN switches and directors

  • Redundant, hot-swappable power supplies and cooling fan assemblies

The DS4100 utilizes 2 Gbps Fibre Channel technology for connections to host servers or switched SAN fabrics, and optionally to additional disk drive enclosures. On the DS4100 host interface, there are two host ports per controller, each providing two 2 Gbps FC attachment to each of the RAID controllers. You can attach to a switched fabric or directly to host servers via FC host bus adapters using either shortwave small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical converters (#2210) for distances up to 300 meters, or longwave SFP optical convertors (#2220) for distances up to 10 km (6.2 miles). The DS4100 supports and comes with authorization for up to 14 internal Serial ATA disk drive modules (#4602) and 3 DS4000 EXP100 Expansion Units, supporting a total of 56 drive modules and 14 TB of storage capacity. Individual Serial ATA drive module capacities are 250 GB. The DS4100 also has an option for Flashcopy activation to enable a quick point-in-time logical drive copy for data protection.

The DS4100 includes licensed IBM Machine Code and support to attach to servers running Microsoft Windows operating systems. For attachment to pSeries/AIX, Sun Solaris, and other Intel-based operating system servers, the following optional features must be ordered to obtain the necessary IBM Machine Code licenses and support:
