IBM TotalStorage DS4000 family of storage products

The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 family of storage products are designed to offer a set of building blocks for Fibre Channel (FC)-based SANs, whether you are just starting or expanding an existing storage network. The DS4000 product family offers scalable storage capacity ranging from 73 GB to over 67 TB to support growing storage requirements. DS4000 Storage Servers are designed to be easy to install and manage using the DS Storage Manager that is included with every DS4000 storage product. DS4000 Midrange Disks Systems offer various controller models at different performance and price points to help best address varying SAN needs.

Multiple DS4000 storage products can be centrally managed from a common DS4000 management console located virtually anywhere within an existing LAN infrastructure. Use DS4000 advanced copy service functions, such as FlashCopy and Remote Mirror, to help address data protection and disaster recovery needs.

DS4000 offering - DS4300 Midrange Disk System Model 6LU

As a member of the DS4000 family, Model 6LU, is designed to offer high-performance, entry-level capabilities with upgrade and scalability features you have come to expect with DS4000. The 3U rack-mountable enclosure contains a single RAID controller with multiple SAN connectivity options configurable with up to 14 high-performance 2 Gbps Fibre Channel DS4000 disk drive modules for a complete storage solution of up to over 4 terabytes. Key elements of the DS4300 Model 6LU are:

• Single, high-performance RAID controller card, with two 2 Gbps host ports

• Support for up to 14 internal disk drives

• Support for RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10

• 256 MB of write-back cache, with battery backup protection

• Investment protection support with upgrade options to configurations compatible to the dual-controller DS4300 Model 60U, or the DS4300 with the Turbo feature

• DS4000 Storage Manager V8.34 with a single host group partition, expandable to either four, eight, or 16 storage partitions

• Single power supply and redundant cooling fan assemblies

• Attachment to a wide range of industry-standard SAN switches and directors

The DS4300 Model 6LU utilizes 2 Gbps Fibre Channel technology for connections to host servers or switched SAN fabrics. On the DS4300 Model 6LU, there are two host ports, each providing two 2 Gbps FC attachments. You can attach to a switch fabric or directly to host servers via FC host bus adapters using either shortwave small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical converters (#2210) for distances up to 300 meters, or longwave SFP optical convertors (#2220) for distances up to 10 km (6.2 miles). The DS4300 Model 6LU supports up to 14 internal disk drive modules, supporting over 4 TB of storage capacity. Individual drive module capacities can range from 36.4 GB to 300 GB.

The DS4300 Model 6LU includes licensed IBM Machine Code and support to attach to servers running Microsoft Windows operating systems. For attachment to Sun/Solaris, HP/HP-UX, and other Intel-based operating system servers, the following optional features must be ordered to obtain the IBM Machine Code licenses and support necessary:

Also available is an Intel Pack (#7600) that combines support for Linux/Intel and Novell NetWare operating systems with an upgrade to four storage partitions, all as a single optional feature.

IBM DS4000 Storage Manager V8.34, included with the DS4300 Model 6LU, provides a GUI for configuring, monitoring, and managing one or more DS4000 Midrange Disk system products. DS4000 Storage Manager includes a license for a single host partition with options to add storage partitions, up to four (#8804), eight (#8808), or 16 (#8816), enabling up to 16 host servers or groups of host servers. Each storage partition provides protected data access for only the assigned host servers to the DS4000 logical drives (or LUNs).

Each storage partition supports up to 32 logical drives. With the 16 storage partition option, the DS4300 supports up to 512 logical drives.

DS4000 Storage Manager's dynamic subsystem management capabilities support nondisruptive expansion of logical drives, addition of disk drives to array, and changing of the RAID segment size or RAID level of an array. The DS4300 Model 6LU FlashCopy feature (#7351) enables a quick point-in-time logical drive copy function.

As your requirements grow to meet needs for higher availability, increased performance, and larger capacity, the DS4300 Model 6LU can be upgraded to the equivalent of either the DS4300 Model 60U with dual RAID controllers with expandability of up to 16 terabytes, or the DS4300 with Turbo with expandability of up to 33 terabytes.

The DS4300 Model 6LU upgrade feature (#2011) provides two RAID controllers, each with 256 MB of cache, and an additional power supply for full redundancy. All additional features applicable to the DS4300 Model 60U also become available with this upgrade, including the optional VolumeCopy or FlashCopy/VolumeCopy advanced copy services and attachment license features for attaching up to three EXP700/710 Storage Expansion Units.

The DS4300 Model 6LU Turbo upgrade feature (#2012) provides two RAID controllers, each with 1 GB of cache, and an additional power supply for full redundancy. It enables all additional features applicable to the DS4300 with Turbo model. Feature #2012 includes Storage Manager V8.4, eight storage partitions, attachment licenses for up to seven EXP700/710 Expansion Units, and options to increase the number of storage partitions to 16 (#8850) or 64 (#8863) become available. Each upgrade kit includes one rack Power Distribution Unit jumper power cord. If country-specific line cords are being used, an additional line cord (#98xx) can be ordered with the upgrade.
