Description

For data archival, data reference, and near-line storage applications, the IBM TotalStorage EXP100 Expansion Unit is designed to enable the attachment of Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) disk drives for DS4100, DS4300, and DS4500 Midrange Disk Systems. The EXP100 Storage Expansion Unit is a rack-mountable enclosure that supports up to fourteen of the DS4000 250 GB SATA disk drive modules, offering up to 3.5 terabytes (TB) of capacity per enclosure. Coupled with the DS4500, it allows you to configure RAID protected storage solutions of up to 56 TB, up to 28 TB with the DS4300, and up to 14 TB with the DS4100 to help provide economical and scalable storage for your rapidly growing application needs for limited access, data reference capacity. The EXP100 Expansion Unit utilizes SATA technology and is designed with redundant 2 Gbps Fibre Channel connections to the DS4000 Midrange Disk systems, supporting increased reliability and performance as compared to older, nonredundant parallel Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) products.

DS4000 with DS4000 SATA disks build upon the highly successful and widely established base of DS4000 Midrange Disk Systems. They can be added to storage area networks to satisfy the needs of various fixed content, data reference applications that require large amounts of storage capacity but do not have the high utilization and access characteristics satisfied by Fibre Channel disk drive storage. Users will continue to have the advantages of the DS4000 Storage Manager's common, centralized management interface for handling both classes of storage needs.

The IBM TotalStorage DS4000 EXP100 Expansion Unit is designed to provide an economical storage alternative for the DS4100, DS4300 and DS4500 Midrange Disk systems to meet the large capacity needs of data reference or fixed content types of applications. Using the lower cost SATA disk drives for applications that do not demand the performance and access intensity typically addressed with Fibre Channel disk drives, the EXP100 Expansion Unit supports up to fourteen DS4000 250 GB SATA disk drive modules (feature #4602), offering up to 3.5 TB of capacity per enclosure. The EXP100 Expansion Unit includes two redundant power supplies, enabling support for dual power source configuration, and redundant cooling capabilities that are hot swappable, allowing concurrent maintenance operations. Each DS4000 250 GB SATA disk drive module is dual-ported and attaches to the two Fibre Channel loops of DS4000 Midrange Disk Systems, supporting continued data access should a single cable connection fail.

Up to sixteen EXP100 Expansion Units can be attached to the DS4500, providing a capacity of up to 56 TB. With the DS4300, attachment of up to eight EXP100 Expansion Units is supported, providing up to 28 TB capacity. Up to three EXP100 Expansion Units are supported with the DS4100 providing up to 14 TB capacity. Internal disk drive modules within the DS4300 enclosure are not supported when attaching EXP100 Expansion Units. The empty drive module fillers must be left in place to provide proper airflow and cooling to the DS4300.

The EXP100 Expansion Unit is a 3U, 19-inch rack-mountable enclosure that houses up to fourteen DS4000 SATA disk drive modules. Each EXP100 Expansion Unit accommodates up to four short wave LC-type Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) GBICs (feature #2210). Depending upon the specific configuration and placement of the EXP100 Expansion Unit with the DS4000 system, the actual number of SFP GBICs required can vary from two to four. Two short wave fiber optic cables with LC-type connectors on each end are required to attach the EXP100 Expansion Unit to a DS4000 Midrange Disk System or to another EXP100 Expansion Unit. These cables (features 5601, 5605, and 5625) are available in several lengths. Included with EXP100 Expansion Unit are the rail mounting kit, two rack Power Distribution Unit power cords, and the option to order a pair of country-specific wall outlet power cords.
